News sport : Nebraska DE Randy Gregory will enter NFL draft

Dec 27, 2014; San Diego, CA, USA; Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive end Randy Gregory (4) looks on before the game against the USC Trojans in the 2014 Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. (Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports) In a move that wasn’t unexpected, Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory is headed to the NFL.

The junior told ESPN in an email that he is “ready for the next challenge” in his life.

“I look forward to the coaching I will receive and the chance to push myself alongside the best players in the world,” Gregory said. “Thank you to my coaches from all levels, the Nebraska fans, my teammates, and my family who have supported me from the start.”

The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Gregory registered 54 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and seven sacks in 11 games for the Huskers this season. As a sophomore in 2013, Gregory started 10 of 13 games, compiling 66 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.

Gregory is expected by many draft experts to be a high first round selection. Yahoo’s Eric Edholm had Gregory going No. 3 overall in his first mock draft from earlier this month.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 16 Aric Almirola

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Aric Almirola

NASCAR Experience: Parts of seven seasons in the Sprint Cup Series, including three full-time.

Most recent team: Richard Petty Motorsports

Most recent season finish: 16th

2014 accomplishments: Making the Chase! Though we won't talk about what happened when the Chase began. Also finished third at Bristol during caution-light-rain-gate.

Most memorable moment: Winning at Daytona in July, duh. Though what can a guy do to win a race that's driven the full distance? Both NASCAR wins aren't, uh, complete.

Strengths: Has shown speed on 1.5-mile tracks and three of five career top-five finishes have come at short tracks.

2015 goals: Make the Chase again to prove that the 2014 win and subsequent Chase appearance wasn't a fluke.

FTM's Take: We hesitate to use the f word that was just used above again, but Almirola's win in 2015 seems closer to that than it does to the start of a trend.

No, it's not a slam against the No. 43 team, either. It's just that we've seen how the roulette wheel spins at restrictor plate tracks, and Almirola wasn't consistently competitive at the other types of tracks in 2014. He led a total of 23 laps and 19 of them were at Daytona in either February or July.

A win in 2015 isn't impossible by any means. But for it to happen outside of a fuel strategy game or at a restrictor plate track again, RPM is going to need some significant speed improvements.

Previous reviews: No. 17 Kyle Larson, No. 18, Jamie McMurray, No. 19 Clint Bowyer, No. 20, Austin Dillon, No. 21 Paul Menard, No. 22 Brian Vickers, No. 23 Marcos Ambrose, No. 24 Martin Truex Jr., No. 25 Tony Stewart, No. 26 Casey Mears, No. 27 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 28, Danica Patrick, No. 29, Justin Allgaier, No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman

News sport : Rex Ryan interviews for television work at ESPN: report

The Rex Ryan Train is rollin', baby, and now ESPN is trying to get on board.

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta reports that the ex-Jets head coach is meeting with ESPN execs on Tuesday about a possible role with the network in the event a new coaching gig doesn't come through.

Despite ending the 2014 season with a 2-14 record and a 46-50 run overall as Jets head coach, Ryan remains a hot name in coaching circles. The 49ers, Falcons, Raiders, and Bears all have vacancies at the moment and could show some interest. (The Jets also have a vacancy and presumably won't bring Ryan in for interviews, though we wouldn't put it past them.)

Ryan's bombastic, outsize persona would appear to be a perfect fit for NFL pregame shows, where nuance is the enemy, and networks have had Ryan in their sights for several years now. “I think he would be successful whether it is in studio or doing games. When I close my eyes and listen to him I hear a little bit of John Madden in him," ESPN senior coordinating producer Seth Markman told Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch last month. “There is going to be a lot of interest in Rex if that is what he wants to do.”

Barca transfer ban appeal rejected

Barcelona's appeal against a Fifa sanction for an alleged breach of rules on the transfer of foreign Under-18 players has been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

|||

Madrid - Barcelona's appeal against a Fifa sanction for an alleged breach of rules on the transfer of foreign Under-18 players has been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Spanish club said on Tuesday.

Soccer's world governing body Fifa announced in April it had banned Barca from the transfer market for two consecutive windows and fined them 450,000 Swiss francs ($455,000).

Barca denied wrongdoing and the ban was suspended pending an initial appeal to Fifa, meaning the Catalan club were able to buy and sell players in the close season.

Fifa rejected the appeal and the club decided to challenge the decision at CAS, which heard evidence from Barca officials and youth players at a hearing on Dec. 5.

The CAS decision means Barcelona will not be able to sign any new players until January 2016, although the club said it could appeal the CAS decision to a Swiss federal court.

“FC Barcelona considers the sanction as being absolutely disproportionate as it implies an excessive punishment for the club given its track record,” the club said in a statement.

Barca president Josep Bartomeu has fiercely defended their “La Masia” academy, which has produced the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, saying the club have been the victims of a “grave injustice”.

“With this sanction, Fifa is punishing a model that has existed for 35 years and which is the essence of this club,” he told reporters in April. – Reuters

Howard blow for Everton

Everton received a heavy blow as manager Roberto Martinez announced that goalkeeper Tim Howard will be out for up to six weeks with a calf injury.

|||

London – Everton received a heavy blow as manager Roberto Martinez announced that goalkeeper Tim Howard will be out for up to six weeks with a calf injury.

The 35-year-old sustained the injury in the first half of Everton's 1-0 loss at home to Stoke City last Friday and was replaced by Joel Robles, who deputised for him again in Sunday's 3-2 defeat at Newcastle United.

“Tim Howard will be out between five and six weeks with a calf injury,” Martinez told a press conference ahead of Everton's New Year's Day game at Hull City.

“I thought Joel was very calm against Stoke and did well against Newcastle. But we will assess whether we need cover.”

The loss of Howard, who starred for the United States at the World Cup, falls at an inconvenient moment for Martinez, whose side have slipped to 12th place in the table after winning only two of their last 10 games.

A six-week lay-off would see Howard miss league games against Hull, Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace and derby rivals Liverpool, as well as next week's FA Cup third-round tie with West Ham United. – Sapa-AFP

Brazil - biggest flops of 2014

Brazil conceded four goals in six minutes during the first half of their World Cup semi-final against Germany.

|||

Zurich - This year's World Cup was supposed to mark the moment Brazilian football emerged from the shadow of the 1950 Maracanazo and stamped its authority on the sport by winning a sixth world title on home soil.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari told his team they had an “obligation” to win the tournament and any player who could not handle the pressure should go and work in a bank or “sit in an office and do nothing.”

Scolari, however, failed to prepare his players psychologically for the challenge and the result was that he oversaw the most astonishing collapse the sport has ever witnessed in a the final stages of a major competition.

Brazil resembled a team playing a kick about in the park as their defence imploded and conceded four goals in six minutes during the first half of their World Cup semi-final against Germany, leaving them 5-0 behind after half an hour.

It was arguably the most ridiculous display by any team at the tournament since Zaire were thrashed 9-0 by Yugoslavia in a 1974 group match.

Germany went on to beat Brazil 7-1 but it would have been more if their players, who appeared almost embarrassed to celebrate their goals, had not taken their foot off the pedal.

The picture of a young boy crying copiously as the goals rained in summed up an extraordinary afternoon at the Mineirao and will remain etched in the memory for years to come.

Critics agreed that no team had ever had to live with similar levels of pressure and expectation since another Brazil side, also playing at home, tried to win the World Cup 64 years ago.

On that occasion, a vastly superior Brazil needed only a draw against Uruguay in the tournament's decisive match to win the tournament for the first time.

An estimated 200,000 crowd packed into the new Maracana stadium, built as a symbol of “the land of the future”, only to see Brazil lose 2-1 to their tiny neighbours, a result that left an indelible mark on the national psyche.

“Brazilians suffered an inferiority complex and when we lost that match against Uruguay, it reinforced that,” said Brazil's deputy sports minister Luis Fernandes before the World Cup.

“We were the stray dogs and the others were the pedigrees,” he said, referring to the term famously used by writer Nelson Rodrigues.

Brazil won five world titles after that but the Maracanazo was ingrained into Brazilian football folklore and no sooner had the country been awarded the tournament hosting rights in 2007, that talk began of a chance to exorcise the ghosts of 1950.

Scolari, who led Brazil to their fifth world title in 2002, was considered the ideal coach for the task, yet Big Phil seemed to have lost his magic touch.

His discourse, based on creating a family atmosphere in the squad and rousing national fervour, was as outdated as his tactics, which made liberal use of tactical fouling and used an old-fashioned “number nine” at centre forward.

Over-reliant on Neymar, Brazil bullied their way to the semi-finals but, with the inspirational forward injured and key defender Thiago Silva suspended, it all fell apart against the Germans.

Scolari's idea of preparation seemed to be getting the players to sing as loudly as possible but they needed more than patriotic spirit and “malandragem” - a local term for cunning mixed with naughtiness - against the sophisticated Germans.

“We weren't prepared for things going wrong, and that was down to the pressure,” central defender Dante told FIFA.com.

“Our preparations were focused on us becoming the champions but not on how to handle things if they went wrong.

“There are times when having a 'We have to win' mentality can work in your favour, but in a psychological sense you need to have more vision than that.” – Reuters

Rooney calls for fixtures rethink

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has added his voice to calls for changes to the Premier League's breathless festive fixture schedule.

|||

London – Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has added his voice to calls for changes to the Premier League's breathless festive fixture schedule, in comments reported by several British newspapers on Tuesday.

Rooney scored twice in United's 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, lined up for the 0-0 draw at Tottenham Hotspur less than 48 hours later, and is due to feature against Stoke City on New Year's Day.

Europe's other major leagues are currently enjoying a mid-season break and England's traditional festive programme has come under attack, with Sunderland coach Gus Poyet describing it as “a disgrace”.

Rooney said: “It is not easy playing two games in two days and you do lose a lot of the quality from both teams.

“It is difficult. We started so well in the first half (against Tottenham), but in the second half it was tough and hopefully in the future it has to change.

“It will probably take someone getting a really bad injury from doing it, which no-one wants to see, but it is very demanding and I think it does need looking at.

“With the weather as well, with the fans coming from London or travelling from Manchester, it has been tough. It is a lot of money to spend over Christmas as well.

“But it is what it is. We have to deal with that and have to try and perform well.” – Sapa-AFP

Ref apologises to Mourinho

Blundering referee Anthony Taylor apologised to Jose Mourinho for failing to award a penalty when Cesc Fabregas was tripped at Southampton.

|||

Blundering referee Anthony Taylor apologised to Jose Mourinho for failing to award a penalty when Cesc Fabregas was tripped at Southampton on Sunday.

It has emerged that Taylor, who instead booked Fabregas for diving in the 1-1 draw, said sorry to the Chelsea boss before both had left St Mary’s.

Mourinho claimed afterwards the official would be ‘ashamed’ of his decision and went on to say that a campaign had been started against his Chelsea players after the latest allegation that they are prone to cheating.

It is unusual for an official to offer his apologies to a manager so soon after a game, even though they are allowed to discuss decisions after a 30-minute ‘cooling off period’.

Mourinho is clearly attempting to shield his players from criticism after a number of them were accused of diving in recent weeks.

Pardew set to swap Newcastle for Palace

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is on the verge of taking over at Crystal Palace after being given permission to talk to his former club.

|||

London - Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is on the verge of taking over at Crystal Palace after being given permission to talk to his former club.

Newcastle confirmed on their official website that Palace had made a formal approach to speak to Pardew about their managerial vacancy and they had agreed.

“Crystal Palace have offered compensation at a level whereby Alan has now been permitted to speak to them,” the statement said of the manager who joined the club in December 2010.

“As a result of this development today, Alan will not be at training on Tuesday. Training will be the responsibility of assistant manager John Carver.”

The agreement smoothes the way for Pardew's managerial 'transfer' to the club where he was once a favourite as a player.

With Pardew's Newcastle contract still having six years to run, a compensation package will need to be finalised between Palace's co-owners and United owner Mike Ashley, who is currently on holiday in Barbados.

If the deal is confirmed, it would mean Pardew leaving a club currently lying 10th in the table for one struggling for survival in the relegation zone in 18th place, having sacked their manager Neil Warnock on Saturday.

Yet after a turbulent time at St James' Park, where he faced various campaigns calling for his resignation or dismissal, the 53-year-old Pardew would be warmly received back at Palace, the club he helped steer to an FA Cup final as a midfielder in 1990.

Reports in the British media claim that Pardew, whose future looked particularly insecure before Newcastle rallied from their dismal start to the season, had made it clear to Ashley he wanted to go to Palace.

He played for the London club as a midfielder for four years, making 128 league appearances and scoring eight goals.

Pardew's most celebrated goal, though, was the one that sank Liverpool in the 1990 FA Cup semi-final. Palace went on to lose the final to Manchester United after a replay but it remains the Eagles' finest achievement.

Speculation about Pardew's future had been rife since he skipped the post-match news conference after Newcastle had beaten Everton 3-2 on Sunday.

There have also been reports that Pardew, whose family home is in Surrey, much nearer to London than Newcastle, was left frustrated by a meeting with Ashley last month where he was told he would have no money for new signings in the transfer window. – Reuters

Lallana double sinks Swansea

Adam Lallana fired Liverpool to their biggest home win of the season as the midfielder's brace inspired a 4-1 rout of Swansea.

|||

Liverpool – Adam Lallana fired Liverpool to their biggest home win of the season as the England midfielder's brace inspired a 4-1 rout of Swansea.

Brendan Rodgers' side scored four for the first time since March thanks to Lallana's second half double after Alberto Moreno had put the Reds ahead in the first half at Anfield.

Jonjo Shelvey's own goal completed the demolition of lacklustre Swansea, who had briefly threatened a revival when Gylfi Sigurdsson struck to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

As a result of their goal spree, the hosts climbed above Swansea into eighth place Ä five points behind fourth placed Southampton in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

With one defeat in their last 10 matches in all competitions and Lallana finally showing the class that persuaded Rodgers to pay £25 million (32 million euros, $38 million) to sign him from Southampton, Liverpool head into the new year with renewed belief that they can salvage a troubled campaign.

“It was a great performance against a very good side. I felt for the big part of the game we dominated,” Rodgers said.

“For me it was about getting back to performing well. Tonight we were convincing. We have to keep that intensity and work-rate.

“We know the work we need to put in but the players are starting to work together. We are a young side looking to settle in and play a type of football we find creative and exciting.”

Liverpool started brightly and Martin Skrtel towered above his marker at the far post to head straight at Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianksi.

The Reds threatened again as Raheem Sterling's volley from Moreno's cross drew a good stop from Fabianski but, when the rebound fell to Lallana, he blazed wildly over the crossbar from close-range.

While Liverpool were forcing Swansea back, they were still searching for the cutting edge that has been missing for much of the season and Philippe Coutinho could only produce a weak shot from the edge of the penalty area that was easily gathered by Fabianski.

Swansea enjoyed a sustained period of possession that ended with Wayne Routledge's deep cross being met by Nathan Dyer, but the winger's header was easy for Simon Mignolet to pluck from the air.

Rodgers's side finally made the breakthrough in the 33rd minute with a flowing move started and finished by Moreno.

The Spanish left-back advanced to pick out Lallana, who in turn slipped Jordan Henderson into space on the left.

Moreno had carried on his run and met Henderson's low cross into the six-yard box with a half-volley that crashed off Fabianski and into the net.

Coutinho fired into the side-netting from a tight angle after a mazy run as Liverpool pushed for a second goal.

Swansea midfielder Shelvey was fortunate to escape punishment from referee Andre Marriner before half-time when he caught Can in the face with a flailing elbow.

Liverpool have struggled to kill off opponents this season but they were gifted a second goal in the 51st minute.

Fabiasnki took an age on the ball after a back pass and his clearance smacked into Lallana and bounced over the embarrassed Swansea goalkeeper and into the net.

The visitors got one back a minute later when Sigurdsson converted from close range after Wayne Routledge's cross dropped kindly for the midfielder.

But moments later Wilfried Bony was unable to beat Mignolet and Liverpool took advantage to kill off Garry Monk's men in the 61st minute.

Coutinho's deft flick sent Lallana through the midfield and he cut inside two defenders before striking low past Fabianski.

Seven minutes later, Henderson's right-wing corner was flicked into his own net by Shelvey to seal the win.

There was still time for more controversy as Sterling flicked his hand in the direction of Federico Fernandez but avoided censure from Marriner. – Sapa-AFP

Cisse charged with violent conduct

Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse has been charged with violent conduct, the FA said in a statement on Monday referring to an incident in the match against Everton.

|||

London - Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse has been charged with violent conduct, the FA said in a statement referring to an incident in the Premier League match against Everton.

The charge, which could lead to a three-match ban, came after a video review panel re-examined footage during which Cisse elbowed defender Seamus Coleman at St James' Park on Sunday.

The incident was unseen by the match officials.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez called the failure to punish Cisse “unacceptable”, saying the Senegalese attempted to “hurt” Coleman.

Cisse equalised a minute later for Newcastle who went on to win 3-2.

“Those are not actions we want to see on a football pitch and the referee should have seen it,” Martinez said. – Reuters

News sport : Kings possibly tried 4-on-5 cherry-picking idea, failed badly

Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive earned lots of attention around the NBA this summer when it was reported that he had pitched his coaches a 4-on-5 defense idea in which one player would cherry-pick to get an easy shot at the other end on every possession. It does not appear that head coach Michael Malone ever entertained the idea seriously, which might have played into his firing due to philosophical differences just a few weeks ago. At the same time, Yahoo's own Adrian Wojnarowski noted that new interim coach Tyrone Corbin was expected to implement some form of Ranadive's get-a-dunk-every-time-but-maybe-also-give-up-points-every-time plan.

The first two weeks of the Corbin era didn't include any obvious examples of the tactic, but Monday night's game at the Brooklyn Nets might have marked the opening salvo in the war against basketballular sanity. With 8:25 left in the second quarter, guard Ray McCallum was called for a palming violation to send the ball to the Nets. Veteran big man Reggie Evans appeared to be subbed out for DeMarcus Cousins on the same play and headed to the bench at that end. Except Cousins never officially entered the game, so Evans jumped from his seat in time to catch a pass from McCallum in transition. He appeared to have an easy dunk, but Mirza Teletovic caught up in time to block the shot and deny the Kings. Watch a video of the whole thing here (via The Brooklyn Game):

It's unclear if the Kings planned this move or simply happened upon it due to their own confusion. If they did attempt the cherry-picking for real, then it took a very different form than what most of us imagined this summer, when it seemed like a player would just hang out in plain sight as the opponents went about their offensive possession. What Evans did here is not so much a visionary act as blatant trickery, which makes it much less interesting than the initial proposal.

Even if it was not the plan, though, Ranadive and other minds likely learned something from Evans's failure. For one thing, it's pretty tough to make a full-court outlet pass right after a rebound, so defenders would have some time to get back to challenge a shot. The cherry-picker also needs to be athletic enough to complete the play fairly easy (unlike Evans) but not so athletic that he is a plus defender, which would seem to force him into duty as one of the members of the penalty-killing unit at the other end. In other words, "easy dunk guy" is still a job on the court with particular skills, no matter how much effort it requires.

Those of us who don't want to fixate on the intentionality of this play can look instead to a much better dunk later in the game, one that was definitely on purpose and with a much higher degree of difficulty. With roughly 3:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, Cousins exploded through Mason Plumlee for this thunderous finish:

The Kings couldn't end up with a win — the Nets nabbed a 107-99 victory — but at least they learned a valuable lesson about thinking outside the box. Cousins proved that there's still plenty of room for creativity in five-on-five basketball.

West Brom manager gets the sack

West Bromwich Albion have sacked head coach Alan Irvine, the club announced on their website late.

|||

West Bromwich Albion have sacked head coach Alan Irvine, the club announced on their website late.

The English Premier League club made the move following a run of seven losses in their past nine games, a series of results that has caused them to slide to 16th place, just above the relegation zone.

“Securing a sixth season in the Premier League is the over-riding target and sometimes unpleasant decisions have to be taken to serve that imperative,” Albion technical director Terry Burton says on the club's website.

“Alan has impressed everyone with his manner, dedication and diligence but he knows that results have simply not been good enough.”

Irvine was surprise choice when he was hired as West Brom manager in June this year after the 56-year-old Scot had spent the previous three seasons as youth team coach at Everton.

Bookmakers have installed former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood as favourite to succeed Irvine with ex-Stoke and Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis close behind in the betting. – Reuters

News sport : Texas offense sputters to near-historic levels against Arkansas

Texas just missed setting a record against Arkansas on Monday night in the Advocare Texas Bowl. And no, it's not a bad thing.

The Longhorns accured 59 yards of offense as Arkansas won 31-7. It was just nine yards more than the Texas record for fewest yards of offense, which was set in 1943 when the Longhorns lost 14-7 to Southwestern University.

The record will live on for at least another nine months, but it got a serious scare, especially in the second half. The Longhorns had the ball five times in the final 30 minutes and the first four drives netted -8 -7, -2 and -4 yards respectively. Entering what turned out to be its final possession of the game (and one that ended with an interception) the Longhorns' offense had 30 yards.

57 of them came through the air, as quarterback Tyrone Swoopes was 13-25 for 57 yards. He had a nice completion to Daje Johnson on the sideline in the second half, but an open Johnson ran too close to the sidelines and was out of bounds as he made the catch. After Texas got a first down on its final drive of the game, Swoopes overthrew a wide-open Jacorey Warrick.

The Longhorns' two yards of rushing were throttled by Swoopes -32 rushing yards thanks to sacks, especially to a 19-yard sack that ended the first half. Oh, and there was a miscommunication between Swoopes and Jonathan Gray on a handoff near the Longhorns' own goal-line which resulted in a fumble and a recovery for a touchdown for Arkansas to make the Razorback lead 17-0.

Outside of Texas' offensive futility, the most interesting thing was Bret Bielema's left hand. After his hand appeared to be making the "horns down" sign in a handshake with Texas coach Charlie Strong earlier in the week, Bielema was caught by cameras reflexively bringing his middle and ring fingers towards his palm with his hands at his sides.

As is typical, Arkansas, 7-6, ran for more yards than it threw for, amassing 191 on the ground and 160 in the air. Brandon Allen threw for two touchdowns and Jonathan Williams ran for Arkansas' other offensive score. Plus, with the win, the Razorbacks end the season with its only losses coming to teams ranked in the AP top 25 at the time (Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Texas A&M).

Even if Texas' offense had been playing well, its chances of matching Arkansas' 31 points weren't good. The Longhorns, 6-7, passed the 30-point mark four times in 2014 and averaged just 21.4 points per game on the season.

Because of that paltry offense, Monday night's game was Texas' fifth loss of 20 or more points in 2014.

And Monday marked the first time since 1977 that Oklahoma and Texas had lost by 20 or more points in the same bowl season, let alone the same day (Oklahoma lost 40-6 to Clemson in the Russell Athletic Bowl). At the conclusion of the 1977 season, the Longhorns lost 38-10 in the Cotton Bowl to Notre Dame while the Sooners lost 31-6 to Arkansas in the Orange Bowl.

News sport : Rockets-Wizards suffers 35-minute delay due to bent rim

An NBA game is for the most part a finely tuned entertainment spectacle in which arena operators and TV producers know the general form of what they'll be presenting to fans. Sometimes, though, a single thing goes terribly wrong and causes an unfortunate problem that throws off the whole operation. It could be a leak in the roof, a broken shot clock, or even a faulty air conditioner. Such bad fortune could strike at any time to puncture the NBA's shield of professionalism.

Monday's game between the host Houston Rockets and visiting Washington Wizards featured an especially odd delay. Just 48 seconds into the game, referees found that the rim at one end of the floor was bent. Dwight Howard tried to move it back into place by hanging on the rim, but he had little luck despite several tries. Arena operators eventually had to bring out a brand new basket stanchion as a replacement. Take a look:

The delay took 35 minutes in all, enough time to turn a normal 7 p.m. start into one of the night's late-running games. The Rockets broadcast on Root Sports ended up airing part of a team news magazine to pass the time. Fans in the arena had to be entertained by mascot Clutch (via SB Nation):

It's not clear what specifically happened to bend the rim. However, Grantland's Zach Lowe tweeted that another player noticed a problem with a rim before a game earlier this season:

Whatever the cause, the Wizards didn't seem especially hurt by the hassle of an unforeseen delay on the road. They held a one-point lead at the half and added to it directly after the break.
