News sport : Clemson drubs Oklahoma in Russell Athletic Bowl

Following a 2014 offseason inflated by expectations following a Sugar Bowl win, Oklahoma now faces a 2015 offseason attempting to rinse the putrid taste of a disappointing season out of its mouth.

The Sooners were demolished in the Russell Athletic Bowl by Clemson on Monday night, as the Tigers raced out to a 27-0 halftime lead en route to a 40-6 win as the Sooners fell to 8-5.

If Oklahoma needed a sign that things were going to go poorly against the Tigers, there were plenty of them. But we'll focus on the flashing yellow light that was the Tigers' first play of the game. After Oklahoma went three-and-out on its first drive, Clemson QB Cole Stoudt hit WR Artavious Scott on a screen pass that went for a 65-yard touchdown.

On Clemson's second possession, the Tigers missed a field goal. But Oklahoma was offsides on the play. Clemson got to rekick. It was good. The rout was on and it was so bad that it caused the Oklahoma County Sheriff to tweet this as a warning for Oklahoma fans not to drink and drive.

It was a fantastic ending for Stoudt, who struggled with a shoulder injury and some unimpressive play this season. He threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns and added another score on the ground. Save for a game against FCS team South Carolina State in the second game of the season, it was Stoudt's only 300-yard passing performance of the season as Clemson secured its third-straight 10-win season.

Oklahoma's Trevor Knight, who sparkled in the Sugar Bowl win over Alabama, struggled on Monday. Knight was 17-36 passing for 103 yards and threw three interceptions. It didn't help that in his first game action since returning from a neck injury against Baylor in November his offensive line was instantly sliced through by Clemson's tenacious front four.

Off the heels of that Alabama upset, Oklahoma was considered by many to be a top-five team in 2014 and a serious contender for the College Football Playoff. After losing a tough game to TCU on the road, The Sooners went 4-3 to finish the regular season. All three of the losses were at home.

While Monday's loss to Clemson has a lot of similarities to the one that Barry Switzer suffered 26 years ago in his final game at Oklahoma, don't expect coach Bob Stoops to find the same fate. But expectations or no expectations, 8-5 seasons don't sit well in Norman. And based off how the 2014 Big 12 season played out, it'll be harder than ever to get back to the top of the conference.

News sport : Priority Pickups: Gobert or go home

Someday, Zach Randolph, DeMar DeRozan and Ricky Rubio will return from injury, and there will no longer be any need for me to max out my weekly pick-ups. But that day has not yet arrived, so...

[Join FanDuel's $1.75M Wild Card fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 14,530 teams paid]

PG/SG Jarrett Jack, Bkn (38 percent owned)

Deron Williams has been kinda/sorta injured and mired in a deep malaise, plus he's on the trade block. Meanwhile, Jack has been starting for the Nets, and he's been terrific over his last four games (three of which were Brooklyn wins). Details here...

Jarrett Jack game log

The minutes obviously won't hold steady at 35-plus, but we shouldn't expect a total collapse, either. Again, a Williams deal would be a big win. For now, Jack offers the usual PG stats, and you'll note he has a four-game week ahead. Do what needs doing.

SG/SF Jared Dudley, Mil (12 percent owned)

Dudley's role is relatively secure following the Jabari Parker injury (knee), and he's reached double-digit points in four of his last five. He was ridiculous on Friday at Atlanta, going a perfect 10-for-10, including 4-for-4 on threes. Dudley doesn't offer unlimited fantasy goodies, but he's capable of a steal per game, plus he's draining shots from the arc — he's hit 11 threes over his last five games. I'm using him as a deep-league placeholder for DeRozan somewhere, which is ... well, it's sorta terrible. But the past week hasn't been so bad.

SF/PF Nikola Mirotic, Chc (23 percent owned)

OK, so it's been 10 days (and four games) since Nikola has given us 20-plus minutes. But even with minimal burn the dude is still scoring, rebounding, knocking down threes, and getting himself to the line. And when you consider his minutes in context, it's much easier to get excited. Mirotic has seen a few end-game fourth-quarter minutes lately, and that playing time is sacred to Thibs. All it would take for Niko to blow up is an injury to one of Chicago's injury-prone bigs (Jo, Taj, Pau). Mirotic is a terrific stash. He's also your frontrunner for Rookie of the Year.

C Alex Len, Phx (23 percent owned)

Len has started the last seven games for Phoenix, and his numbers have been stellar: 9.0 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 2.7 BPG, 56.5 FG%. For the blocks alone, Len is worth an add. He's a foul-machine, so you probably won't get many 35-minute efforts, but he's been plenty useful in the non-scoring big-man categories.

C Rudy Gobert, Uta (32 percent owned)

Just check out these per-36 numbers: 11.0 PPG, 12.2 RPG, 3.5 BPG(!), 1.5 SPG, 61.3 FG%. I'm in. Gobert is basically a double-double waiting to happen, with silly defensive upside. He's a recommended add on the possibility/probability that his minutes take a leap in the second-half.

News sport : Indiana's Tevin Coleman and USC's Leonard Williams heading to the NFL

A couple of potential first round NFL draft picks made their professional intentions known on Monday.

Indiana's Tevin Coleman and USC's Leonard Williams will both be heading to the NFL.

Coleman was one of the best running backs in college football in 2014 and joins a stacked class of running back early entries that includes Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley, Jay Ajayi and Duke Johnson.

I would like to thank my family, coaches, teammates, and fans for their unwavering support," Coleman said in a statement. "Coming to Indiana University was an incredible opportunity for me. Everyone at IU and in Bloomington has demonstrated why this place is so special. It has been a dream of mine to play professionally, and I am prepared to take the next step in making that dream into a reality."

Coleman had 2,036 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns for the Hoosiers. He broke the 100-yard barrier in every game but against Penn State.

Williams, a defensive tackle, had seven sacks and 80 total tackles in 2014. He could be a top-10 pick in the draft.

"This was a very hard decision for me," Williams said in a statement. "I love USC, Coach Sark and the coaching staff, my teammates and the fans, and I love the game of college football. It's hard to leave all of that. I know life is never the same once you leave college.

"But I feel like it's the right time for me to go. I feel like I'm ready. I'm looking forward to the new challenge that the NFL presents.

Miami OL Ereck Flowers and Penn State OL Donovan Smith declared for the draft along with Utah OL Jeremiah Poutasi.

News sport : Dockers wants the Harbaughs to know it makes Michigan pants

Dockers has an important message for the Harbaugh family: the company makes licensed Michigan pants.

Jim Harbaugh, the man who will reportedly be introduced as the Wolverines' next coach, has a thing for khakis. Cheap khakis, in fact. And while some style-conscious readers may quibble with Dockers as a choice of nice pants, we can all agree that Dockers pants would be an upgrade over the pants Harbaugh has worn on the sidelines with the San Francisco 49ers, right?

The pants currently are $40 on Dockers' site, which is a price hike from what Harbaugh usually pays. But we're guessing the company would hook him up for free. And the Michigan pants come in the normal khaki color too. Harbaugh wouldn't have to go the drastic route of changing the color of his pants too. There's only so much pants change you can undertake at one time, you know.

News sport : West Virginia's Josh Lambert makes field goal after getting hit in the groin (GIF)

West Virginia kicker Josh Lambert is a trooper.

In the third quarter of the Liberty Bowl against Texas A&M, Lambert lined up and hit a 38-yard field goal and then was hit by A&M’s De’Vante Harris. Harris was penalized for roughing the kicker – but it wasn’t any ordinary roughing the kicker penalty.

As you see in the GIF above, Lambert took a shot to a very, very sensitive area.

West Virginia accepted the penalty and hoped to turn it into a touchdown. Instead, just three plays later, Lambert, who was probably not feeling great, came back on the field and hit a 31-yard field goal.

That field goal, Lambert’s third of the day, gave the sophomore an NCAA record for field goal attempts in a season.

The field goal cut Texas A&M’s lead to 38-30.

News sport : The 10-man rotation, starring what it takes to be a great NBA broadcaster

A look around the league and the web that covers it. It's also important to note that the rotation order and starting nods aren't always listed in order of importance. That's for you, dear reader, to figure out.

C: New York Times. A fantastic profile of the work (some) NBA play-by-play announcers feel the need to put in prior to every broadcast, focused around three of the current greats: Cleveland’s Fred McLeod, Indiana’s Mark Boyle, and the absolutely brilliant Pete Pranica. If you’re lucky enough to have NBA League Pass on the visual and audio end of things, you know that this is a marvelous time to be a fan of this league. Night after night, we have these professionals to thank.

PF: Hardwood Paroxysm. As we discussed earlier on Monday, David Blatt needs to start coaching in the manner that he has in his pre-NBA past, and the Cavaliers need to show patience with their rookie coach.

SF: Triangle Offense. Russ Bengtson with an expertly-penned column about how Phil Jackson always makes it about himself, even while preaching selflessness and a goal unseen to those working in the moment.

SG: Bucksketball. Larry Sanders has returned to his old (borderline-dominant) ways defensively, but holy lord does this guy have to start finishing better around the rim.

PG: NBA.com. More reminders about how fantastic Ian Thomsen is as a writer, how wonderful the Memphis Grizzlies and the Gasol brothers are as people, why Danny Thomas was such a lovely person, and why St. Jude’s can use any bit of free change you might having lying around after your holiday bonanza.

6th: ESPN.com. This is an Insider piece, but if you have the service this peek into Andre Miller’s basketball genius is well worth your time.

7th: Pro Basketball Talk. In a rough, rough season, out of nowhere Shabazz Muhammad has come through with one of the warming basketball turnarounds that we can remember. Dan Feldman recounts the second-year comeback of one of the more entertaining players to watch in this league.

8th: Golden State of Mind. On David Lee’s slow introduction into Golden State’s new’ish offensive schemes.

9th: SB Nation. Kobe Bryant is, on paper and in a lot of ways, hurting the Lakers with his play. Overall, though, things seem pretty evened out and awful in the final estimation. Still, dude’s got to get his game together.

News sport : Malik Zaire will start at QB for Notre Dame vs. LSU, not Everett Golson

In a surprising move, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly told reporters Monday that Malik Zaire will start at quarterback in the Music City Bowl, replacing Everett Golson.

It will be the first career start for Zaire, who replaced a struggling Golson in the regular season finale at USC, a 49-14 loss. Kelly said that Golson will play as well, but it will be the redshirt freshman Zaire who starts the game against LSU on Tuesday.

Golson completed 9-of-20 passes for 170 yards against the Trojans. He also ran for 18 yards and a score on six carries.

Golson, a redshirt junior, threw for 3,355 yards and 29 touchdowns while gaining 277 yards and scoring eight times on the ground this season. However, Kelly expressed continued frustration with Golson’s habit of turning the ball over. Golson lost eight fumbles and threw 14 interceptions on the season, all of which game in Notre Dame’s final nine games.

Notre Dame started the year 6-0 and climbed to No. 5 in the rankings before losing five of its final six games to finish a disappointing 7-5.

The Music City Bowl between the Irish and 8-4 LSU will kick off at 3 p.m. ET in Nashville on Tuesday.

News sport : Ndamukong Suh suspended one game for Aaron Rodgers leg stomp

The NFL has suspended Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for a game for stepping on the calf and ankle of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Sunday.

[Join FanDuel's $1.75M Wild Card fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 14,530 teams paid]

The play looked accidental at first — until Suh stepped on Rodgers' injured leg a second time. Rodgers retaliated with a push to Suh and a plea to referee Walt Anderson. Rodgers said after the game Anderson told him that Suh said he was pushed into Rodgers after the play.

That means Suh will miss the Lions' playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. A free agent after the season with an unwieldy salary-cap number, Suh might have played his final game as a Lion.

Suh has a history — seven documented incidents — in the NFL with dirty play on the field, including his more pronounced stomp on former Packers center Evan Dietrich-Smith. Rodgers would not blame Suh directly but clearly was annoyed that it occured in an area of his leg he injured in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then aggravated earlier in the Lions game Sunday.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was not happy about the play after the game.

"I didn’t see it live, I didn’t see it on the JumboTron, but from what I’m told, I’m told it was ridiculous," a McCarthy said. "There’s no place for that, so that’s where I’m at with it. I don’t understand it, frankly."

Suh can appeal his case to Ted Cottrell, the league's arbiter, but likely doesn't stand a great chance of having it overturned.

News sport : Music City Bowl: Will Irish's turnover woes continue vs. LSU?

Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl

Notre Dame (7-5) vs. LSU (8-4)

Nashville, Tenn.

Dec 30, 2014

Tuesday’s Music City Bowl features two teams that didn’t meet expectations this season.

Both LSU and Notre Dame entered the 2014 season ranked in the Top 20, but neither lived up to its preseason billing.

Notre Dame started the season by winning its first six games and was ranked fifth heading into a Nov. 8 showdown at second-ranked Florida State. The Fighting Irish came up just short thanks to a controversial offensive pass interference call and the season spiraled downhill in the weeks following, losing five of their final six games (including FSU) to finish 7-5.

The Fighting Irish were able to put up points in bunches, but turnovers, 26 in all, plagued them all season. Junior quarterback Everett Golson threw for 3,355 yards and 29 touchdowns, but he turned the ball over 22 times (14 INT, 8 fumbles) and head coach Brian Kelly turned to backup Malik Zaire late in the season. In fact, Kelly said that both quarterbacks would see time against LSU.

The Irish defense allowed nearly 30 points per game on the season and will face a tough challenge with LSU’s running attack. True freshman Leonard Fournette led the way with 891 yards and eight touchdowns, while Terrence Magee and Kenny Hilliard added 545 yards and three touchdowns and 431 yards and six scores, respectively.

Like Notre Dame, LSU has had some issues at the quarterback position. Anthony Jennings battled with Brandon Harris battled for snaps early in the season, but Jennings emerged as the better option down the stretch, Still, Jennings threw for only 1,460 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season. He hasn’t thrown for more than 150 yards in a game since September, so if the Irish can stop the LSU run game and force Jennings to throw more than he wants to, it could be a long day for the LSU offense.

The Tigers, who finished 8-4, were ranked No. 13 in the preseason and were expected to compete for an SEC title. Instead, the team’s struggling offense came up small and scored a combined 20 points in losses to Auburn, Alabama and Arkansas. Still, the Tigers have athletes all over the place on defense, allowing only 305.8 yards per game – eighth-best in the country.

ODDS

LSU (-7)

FUN FACT

These two programs have played 10 times previously, with each team winning five times. However, LSU has won both times it squared off with Notre Dame in a bowl game – the 1997 Independence Bowl and the 2007 Sugar Bowl. Additionally, LSU can become the first program with three bowl wins over Notre Dame with a win.

PREDICTIONS

Graham: The LSU secondary has been good most of the season and it should have a field day against turnover-prone Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson. LSU 17, Notre Dame 10.

Nick: Bold prediction: Golson has two early turnovers and Malik Zaire turns what was supposed to be a rep-sharing arrangement into a full-time gig. LSU 23, Notre Dame 16

Sam: Notre Dame’s season really turned into a disaster down the stretch. Facing a tough, athletic LSU defense isn’t exactly a recipe to solve its penchant for turnovers. LSU 20, Notre Dame 16.

News sport : Johnny Manziel gives his side of Friday night party story

As the story went, from two different news outlets, Johnny Manziel held a party on Friday night. Receiver Josh Gordon was reportedly there. On Saturday, Gordon didn't show up to a walk-through practice and Manziel was late to get treatment on his hamstring. Gordon was suspended and Manziel was fined.

Manziel said the story of him throwing a party were "100 percent false." He said there was no party, he just had three friends in from Texas, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer and ESPN.com.

The fact about the party might be disputed, but the fallout is the same. Manziel said he was out too late and overslept. He was fined for being late to something as simple as getting treatment for an injury. Team security was reportedly dispatched to find him after Manziel didn't show up and didn't answer his phone. After going on and on last week about how he had learned as a rookie and this coming offseason would be different, it was not a good sign that he was being sincere.

Manziel said he knows that.

"It's about actions, it's about being accountable instead of looking like a jackass," Manziel said, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN said Manziel apologized to the team. On Sunday, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam talked about not tolerating irresponsible players. The Browns had Gordon, Manziel and rookie cornerback Justin Gilbert all punished last weekend for not showing up to meetings, treatment or practice. When asked about Manziel and whether he's the quarterback of the future, Haslam wouldn't commit to him. Haslam was a major reason Manziel is even in Cleveland; if he has lost the support of the owner he might really be in trouble.

Manziel said he knows that, too.

"Either i'm going to learn or I'm going to be finding something else to do," Manziel said, according to the reports.

This makes for a very interesting story going forward. Most players who don't understand how to be a professional don't realize they're screwing things up until it's way too late. Manziel at very least has a clear understanding that his actions and all the off-the-field hullabaloo are causing the Browns to lose faith in him. But after acknowledging all of that early last week, he immediately made another mistake. So we have a player with some level of self awareness, still with enough time to get things right, and nobody knows if he will follow through on all his promises.

Manziel is never boring, at least.

News sport : Carmelo Anthony finally rests his aching knee, as the Knicks flail away

The New York Knicks and Carmelo Anthony, as always, are in an odd place.

The scoring forward probably didn’t want to return to New York in a basketball sense last summer, but because the Knicks could offer him more money than anyone else and because New York City is such a fantastic place to live, Anthony couldn’t turn the Knicks down.

Knicks president Phil Jackson probably doesn’t see Anthony as his pushing-31 star to build around in his long-term rebuilding process, but presumably because he thinks that it’s hard to gain capital and draw free agents without a big name already in place, Jackson had to toss Anthony as much money as he could.

Both sides got what they wanted. For Anthony, it was money and the enhancement of his whatever-the-hell-this-means brand. For Jackson, it was a star in place while he built his new Knick culture from the ground up.

On the court, nobody has gotten what they wanted nor asked for. The Knicks have started the season on a 5-28 tear, they failed to crack 80 points in a loss to Portland on Sunday night and the squad is the third-worst defensive outfit in the league. On top of all that, Anthony’s long-ago admitted knee woes forced the team to pull him from action late in Sunday’s loss.

From The New York Post:

“The more I was running and jumping toward the end of the second quarter, I tried to get an offensive rebound, then run back,’’ Anthony said. “I looked at coach: ‘Come get me. Come get me.’ But there was no timeout or ball stoppage. I played out the rest of the quarter. I came in there. He saw me in the back. He told me to sit out the second half.’’

“He told me don’t even try,’’ Anthony added. “It’s not even worth it. Just sit out and get treatment I need for today and focus on these next couple of days.’’

The further course of action – New York plays on Wednesday in Los Angeles against the Clippers – appears to be up in the air. From the New York Daily News:

“Eventually it will be a point where they will come to me and we’ll sit down and say this is a point in time where we need to fix this or figure out the next steps,” he said.

From Newsday:

"That's a question I keep asking," he said. "Could it get worse? Could it worsen? It can't get worse. It's just a matter of what I can take and what I can't."

Though Anthony has been understandably complaining about his left knee woes for weeks, he also cited tired legs as part of the reason he couldn’t get his game together on the second night of a brutal back-to-back. The Knicks lost to Sacramento in overtime on Saturday night before flying up to Oregon to take on a fantastic Portland Trail Blazers club.

Just read the Daily News:

“I don’t think it was so much of the soreness than it was more the fatigue of not really getting a chance to recover from (Saturday) night,” Anthony said of an overtime loss at Sacramento. “Like today my leg was feeling heavy and weak.”

Carmelo is just fine in pointing out that he had absolutely no gas in the take on Sunday evening – he did put up 36 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the loss on Saturday – but knee woes created by overuse from 30-year old superstars that have been go-to scorers in the NBA for the last 11-plus years tend not to go away on their own, or in between games.

This is what makes a quote like this from Knick coach Derek Fisher, and an intelligent and studied inference from a Knick scribe to follow, all the more deadening:

This shouldn’t be up to Carmelo Anthony.

The days of things being up to Carmelo Anthony should be over. This was the change that was supposed to take place when Phil Jackson came to town, a move away from the Carmelo-obsessed machinations that drove James Dolan to override his respected former general manager in Donnie Walsh in dealing for Anthony just because Carmelo wanted to get a big contract before the lockout hit. This sort of star-powered nonsense was supposed to hit the bricks when Phil Jackson and Clarence Gaines Jr. – who rightfully are paying as much attention to 2017 as they are the last days of 2014 – came into town to clean shop.

Carmelo Anthony’s presence was never going to be the reason free agents signed with the Knicks. As it was when Amar’e Stoudemire signed with a terrible Knick team and Anthony forced his way toward a mediocre Knick squad, the only reason anyone was ever going to push their way to New York was to make as much money as possible while playing out of a fantastic place like New York City.

Hoping Carmelo’s presence could push the Knicks toward a mediocre record in time to sell a free agent on Madison Square Garden is pathetic. The superstar free agent class of 2015 and (probably) 2016 is most likely staying put with their current teams. The second-level possible stars that could move to New York would do so anyway for the money and for the exposure. They don’t need Carmelo Anthony playing on one leg in December and January to put their candidacy over the top come July.

Carmelo Anthony’s presence, through a tiny (but far from overwhelming) fault of his own, has only led the Knicks to a 5-28 record so far. There’s no guarantee that sitting him in the winter of 2014-15 will help Anthony be worth the nearly $102 million he’s owed after this season and until 2019, but it certainly might help this year and the next.

Phil Jackson and Carmelo Anthony tried to have it both ways, and the results have been typical. Nobody expected the Knicks to be this bad as 2014 rounds into 2015, but this terrible start is far from shocking when considering the terms behind this uneasy alliance, the injuries, and this miserable roster. One can understand if Carmelo doesn’t want to look like he’s jumping ship at the absolute lowest point in his team’s ebb.

If Anthony is hurting this much, though, he has to take time off. For once, he’s not the biggest star in the Knicks’ media guide. Even a self-promoter like Phil Jackson needs to be reminded of that before doing what’s right, and telling Carmelo to sit.

News sport : Gus Malzahn says WR D'haquille Williams won't play in Outback Bowl

Auburn wide receiver D'haquille Williams (1) gets past Kansas State defensive back Danzel McDaniel (7) to catch a long pass. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, in Manhattan, Kan. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) Auburn wide receiver D’haquille Williams won’t play in the Outback Bowl against 10-3 Wisconsin.

According to AuburnSports.com, Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn announced Monday that Williams, the team’s leading pass-catcher, broke unspecified team rules that will keep him out against the Badgers on New Year’s Day.

“I’m not getting into any details,” Malzahn said, per Al.com. “He’s just not going to play.”

Williams has reportedly been mulling whether or not to return for his senior season or to enter the NFL draft. Malzahn provided an update on that front, too.

“He is planning to come back to school next year,” Malzahn said.

Williams, who transferred to Auburn in January from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, caught 45 passes for 730 yards and five touchdowns for the 8-4 Tigers.

He arrived in Tampa, the site of the Outback Bowl, on Saturday – a day later than the rest of the team. He participated in practice on Sunday after missing many of the team’s previous bowl practices with a knee injury and an unspecified illness.

The Outback Bowl kicks off at noon on Jan. 1.

Utah won 20-17 in double overtime. (Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports) Stanford will take on Maryland in the Foster Farms Bowl without Ty Montgomery, its top playmaker on offense.

Montgomery, a senior wide receiver, has been dealing with a sprained right shoulder and Cardinal coach David Shaw said Sunday that he won’t play on Tuesday against the Terrapins.

“He can’t protect himself,” Shaw said, per the Mercury News. “We tried a couple different options. If the game was in a week, he’d be full go.”

Montgomery, who is also a huge threat on special teams as a kick returner, led Stanford with 61 catches and 604 yards this season. He injured the shoulder in Stanford’s win over Cal on Nov. 22 and did not play in the team’s regular season finale against UCLA on Nov. 28.

With Montgomery out, Stanford’s top available pass catcher against Maryland (7-5) is 6-foot-4, 254-pound tight end Austin Hooper. Hooper had 35 catches for 428 yards and two scores this season. Other top receivers include Devon Cajuste (30 catches, 510 yards, 4 TDs) and Michael Rector (23 catches, 309 yards and 2 TDs).

The Foster Farms Bowl will kick off at 10 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

News sport : Oregon State hires Colorado State's Dave Baldwin as offensive coordinator

LAS VEGAS, NV - DECEMBER 20: Interim head coach Dave Baldwin of the Colorado State Rams watches his team warm up before taking on the Utah Utes in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium on December 20, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Utah won 45-10. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images) Gary Andersen’s new staff at Oregon State is taking shape.

Andersen announced Sunday that Colorado State offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin will take the same position on his staff.

Baldwin served as Colorado State’s interim head coach in a Las Vegas Bowl loss to Utah when former CSU head coach Jim McElwain accepted the head-coaching job at Florida. Baldwin led the 18th-best offense in the country (480.9 yards per game) this season as the Rams won 10 games. The Rams were eighth nationally in passing offense, led by quarterback Garrett Grayson, who threw for 4,006 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Before coaching at Colorado State for the past three seasons, Baldwin was Andersen’s offensive coordinator at Utah State from 2009-2011. He has also had stints as an assistant at Cincinnati, Baylor, Michigan State and New Mexico. Additionally, he was a head coach at San Jose State, Cal State Northridge, Santa Rosa Junior College and Santa Barbara Junior College.

In addition to Baldwin, Andersen announced that Kevin McGiven will serve as his quarterbacks coach with the Beavers. McGiven was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah State for the past two seasons and previously coached under Andersen at USU as quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach in 2009.

McGiven has also coached at Montana State, Memphis, Weber State, Southern Utah, BYU and Louisiana Tech.

“Dave and Kevin bring experience and continuity to our staff and offense,” Andersen said. “I know what to expect from these two as coaches and what to expect from our offense. They absolutely fit our program and Oregon State University, and this is another great step for our future.”

Baldwin and McGiven join a staff that is almost complete. Andersen hired Kalani Sitake (defensive coordinator) and Ilaisa Tuiaki (linebackers coach) away from Utah, retained Brent Brennan as wide receivers coach, hired T.J. Woods and Chad Kauha’aha’a from Wisconsin to be offensive line and defensive line coaches, and plucked Derrick Odum from SMU to coach defensive backs.

Andersen left Wisconsin for Oregon State on Dec. 10 after two years with the Badgers. He previously was the head coach at Utah State from 2009-2012.

News sport : Driver Reviews; No. 17 Kyle Larson

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Kyle Larson

NASCAR Experience: Just a solitary season in the Sprint Cup Series and almost two seasons in the Nationwide Series. Plus a Camping World Truck Series win at Rockingham.

Most recent team: Chip Ganassi Racing

Most recent season finish: 17th

2014 accomplishments: Eight top five finishes including second place finishes at Auto Club, Loudon and Kansas. Until finishing 17th at Talladega, had finished in the top six in the first five Chase races.

Most memorable moment: The burnout without a steering wheel at Auto Club after the Nationwide race celebrating Nationwide Series win No. 1.

Strengths: Considered the driver with the most potential in the Sprint Cup Series. Combined with eight top fives in a rookie season...

2015 goals: The same as Jamie McMurray's. WIn a race, make the Chase and avoid any of that sophomore slump talk.

FTM's Take: While still a relative unknown to a lot of NASCAR fans, Larson entered the Cup Series as a well-known commodity in the garage because of his driving talent. And now most NASCAR fans know who he is.

It's dangerous attaching a "next big thing" label to a driver given the cluster at the top of the Cup Series. Good drivers with good teams implant themselves near the top of the standings. Climbing to the top is less like taking someone's place and more like elbowing your way into a crowded party. Larson can do it, but it'd be wise to be patient with him. Just look at Joey Logano.

Previous reviews: No. 18, Jamie McMurray, No. 19 Clint Bowyer, No. 20, Austin Dillon, No. 21 Paul Menard, No. 22 Brian Vickers, No. 23 Marcos Ambrose, No. 24 Martin Truex Jr., No. 25 Tony Stewart, No. 26 Casey Mears, No. 27 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 28, Danica Patrick, No. 29, Justin Allgaier, No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman
