Win-win plan for Moses Mabhida

A new match “share-deal” between the Sharks, KZN cricket and Durban’s R3.4-billion Moses Mabhida Stadium is imminent.

Durban -

A new match “share-deal” between the Sharks, KwaZulu-Natal cricket and Durban’s R3.4-billion Moses Mabhida Stadium is imminent as officials move to ease the R100-million running cost of the World Cup venue to ratepayers.

Vusi Mazibuko, the head of sport for the eThekwini Municipality, confirmed that talks with rugby, football and cricket bosses were under way to arrive at a new deal for sport in the city.

“We are trying to find a space in our diaries where we can all meet and thrash out the technical details. The leadership at the Sharks has been very open to our ideas. We have all agreed that we can’t delay these discussions any longer. There is no reason why we cannot accommodate cricket and rugby regularly at Moses Mabhida. And why can’t football games be played at Kings Park? Why can’t we share? You will definitely see some action on this early in 2015,” he said.

The Sharks and city officials said the deal was a clear sign that the breakdown in trust between former city manager Michael Sutcliffe and the rugby union’s former chief executive Brian van Zyl was in the past.

Mazibuko said the 54 000-seater stadium operational deficit was down from R34.6m in 2012/13 to R14m in 2013/14.

To break even, 12 events a year, with at least 30 000 spectators, were needed. While 24 events were held in the past financial year, they did not draw big crowds and the target was not met, he said.

However, Sharks rugby fans have been assured that a move to the stadium, which made a R14m loss last year, was not the plan. The Sharks own Kings Park Stadium, which is fully paid off, but the land is on a long lease from the city.

To allay the fears of diehard fans, Mazibuko said the Sharks were under no pressure to move. He said the rugby franchise needed to have a separate identity and brand.

Rather, the immediate idea included sharing A-grade rugby and football games between the venues.

Several meetings were also held with the provincial cricket union to identify matches that could be played at the stadium which, five years ago this month, was declared ready to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Mazibuko agreed that suites would have to be built and the field area would need to be made bigger and improved to accommodate cricket.

“These are technical issues which we have talked about. We now know they can easily be sorted out,” he said.

Graham McKenzie, KZN Rugby Union president, said the union was remaining positive. “It is premature for us to be discussing any details, but we are fully behind the city’s drive to make Durban the country’s number one sporting destination. There is a good relationship developing between us. We believe it is going to bear excellent fruit,” he said.

Jesse Chellan, the chief executive of the Sunfoil Dolphins, said the union was waiting for Mazibuko to report back on changing the dimensions of the field.

“The playing surface may be a problem if there is a clash with rugby or football, but it is not a problem to cut the grass down and bring in a drop-in wicket. The only issue is the size of the pitch,” he said.

Kingsmead is owned by the city. The union’s lease expires in 2035.

In Cape Town earlier this month, the Western Province Rugby Union announced it would not move to the financially embattled R4.4bn World Cup stadium in Green Point.

McKenzie said this meant some of the ideas under discussion could see Durban as the first city to arrive at a viable and workable business plan for its World Cup stadium through a private-public partnership.

News sport : Top Five Must-See Plays from Week 17 (Video)

Here are the top five must-see plays from Week 17 in the NFL:

Untouched

DeSean Jackson can turn on the jets like few others in the NFL. Watch as the Washington Redskins wide receiver catches a short pass and zooms all the way to the end zone, 69 yards — and longer as the crow flies — without a Dallas Cowboys defender getting a paw on him.

Almost untouched

Dez Bryant might not be able to blaze quite as fast as Jackson, but he's just as dangerous. Here's Bryant smoking the Redskins defense — first, juking past Redskins corner David Amerson and then outrunning the rest of the secondary for a 65-yard touchdown.

Miller time

Believe it or not, but Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller capped off the franchise's eight-best rushing season on Sunday and did so with the help of the longest run in team history. Backed up against his own end zone, Miller made two New York Jets miss and then turned on the afterburners en route to a 97-yard score.

Stafford to Johnson

Matthew Stafford completed less than 50 percent of his passes on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, and the Detroit Lions couldn't clinch the NFC North at Lambeau Field. But Stafford helped put the Lions back into the game after Aaron Rodgers got hurt with a clutch drive at the end of the first half. He capped it with a terrific throw to Johnson, who scored to tie the game with 28 seconds left in the second quarter.

Jumpin' Gio

Giovani Bernard might have given way to rookie Jeremy Hill as the Cincinnati Bengals' primary back, but it does't mean that Bernard doesn't have a role on this team. Watch as he takes a shovel pass from Andy Dalton, steams toward the end zone and vaults his way in by leaping over Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback William Gay.

News sport : After winning AFC North, Mike Tomlin argues with Cincinnati's Reggie Nelson

Coach Mike Tomlin summed up what the Pittsburgh Steelers were thinking about after winning the AFC North.

It was great to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-17 and win the division, but running back Le'Veon Bell's health was the biggest thing on the Steelers' minds. And Tomlin had words with the Bengals player who hurt Bell, safety Reggie Nelson.

Tomlin hugged Nelson, who delivered a legal shot to Bell's knee that knocked the Steelers' star back out of the game, then said something to him and the two had an obvious disagreement. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis came rushing over to get in between the two, and Steelers defensive assistant coach Joey Porter also played the unlikely role of peacemaker, getting between Tomlin and Nelson.

Although it would be quite a coincidence if the conversation had nothing to do with the hit on Bell, Tomlin said the confrontation had nothing to do with that play, which he acknowledged was legal.

It was clear that the Steelers' win might be very costly, depending on Bell's health. The Steelers will host the Baltimore Ravens in a playoff game next Saturday. It was costly for the Bengals too, who will play at Indianapolis in a wild-card playoff game next Sunday.

Bengals receiver A.J. Green was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter after he took a shot to the head. He was taken back to the locker room before the game ended for more evauation. Green's health will be a major issue for the Bengals this week.

The game itself wasn't that pretty. Each side made mistakes. But the Steelers have Antonio Brown, perhaps the best receiver in the league. Brown returned a punt for a touchdown, and his 63-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter sealed the win and the division title.

Even though the Steelers clinched a home game with the division title, there was more on their minds as the game ended. And Tomlin let Nelson know what was on his mind.

News sport : Le'Veon Bell goes back to locker room with knee injury

Le'Veon Bell is not only one of the best backs in the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers have little depth at tailback after Bell.

And now the Steelers are hoping that Bell's right knee is OK for the playoffs.

In the third quarter, Bell caught a pass out of the backfield and was tackled low by Bengals safety Reggie Nelson. Bell immediately grabbed his right knee after he went to the ground.

He was able to get off the field on his own, but he was examined on the trainer's table and then went back to the locker room. The Steelers said his return was doubtful. NBC reported that Bell had a hyper-extended knee, although he'll surely go through further tests to see if there was any ligament damage.

The Steelers will hope his injury isn't serious, because they would not the same team without him. Bell was named to the Pro Bowl and had 1,341 yards coming into Sunday night's game. Rookie Dri Archer would probably be next in line, but he's a small hybrid receiver/tailback, and nothing like what the Steelers would need in the playoffs. The Steelers could look for a free agent, but there's a reason those players aren't signed this late in the season. Earlier this season the Steelers cut LeGarrette Blount over Blount's tantrum over a lack of playing time in a Monday night game at Tennessee. Although the Steelers had plenty reason to make that move, it left them very thin at tailback.

If Bell has to miss some time in the playoffs it changes the entire outlook for the Steelers, who were poised to enter the postseason as one of the AFC's most dangerous teams.

News sport : Jim Harbaugh and 49ers mutually agree to part ways

There wasn’t much suspense left by the time the San Francisco 49ers announced after Jim Harbaugh’s press conference that the team and coach had mutually agreed to part ways.

In his postgame press conference, Harbaugh spoke of his four seasons with the 49ers in the past tense. When Craig Dahl intercepted a pass to seal the 49ers’ 20-17 win, he handed the ball to Harbaugh. Then the players gave Harbaugh a Gatorade bath.

The 49ers were said to want to trade Harbaugh, but that won’t be happening now. You can’t trade to a college team, after all. It has been widely reported Harbaugh is on his way to the University of Michigan.

“Jim and I have come to the conclusion that it is in our mutual best interest to move in different directions,” 49ers CEO Jed York said in a statement. “We thank Jim for bringing a tremendous competitive nature and a great passion for the game to the 49ers. He and his staff restored a winning culture that has been the standard for our franchise throughout its history. Their commitment and hard work resulted in a period of success that should be looked back on proudly by our organization and our fans. We wish Jim and his family all the best.”

The 49ers might regret not sticking it out with the volatile Harbaugh. He was wildly successful, turning around San Francisco’s franchise after some lean years. He had a 49-22-1 regular-season record with three trips to the NFC championship game. The 49ers won one of those conference title games, and came up just short of winning a Super Bowl. The 49ers slipped to 8-8 this season but this year's results aren't the reason he'll no longer be San Francisco's head coach. Reports of tension between Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke swirled all year. Baalke will lead the coaching search.

San Francisco defensive line coach Jim Tomsula has been rumored to be a possible replacement for Harbaugh. Whoever gets the job will have some big shoes to fill.

"It's been the time of my life, a lot of great memories, a lot of great moments," Harbaugh said in his postgame press conference.

News sport : Panik rocked by Upshall hit, struggles to make it to bench (Video)

Richard Panik started the scoring for the Maple Leafs on Sunday evening versus Florida; however, his night would end early after taking a nasty open ice hit from Scottie Upshall.

Sportsnet has the extended clip showing Panik struggle to get back to the bench. He collects himself on the bench before the Leafs training staff coaxes him back to the locker room. Toronto later announced Panik would not return to the game with an 'upper-body injury'.

I've watched the clip about a million times. I don't know what to make of it, as far as supplemental discipline goes.

Was Panik eligible to be hit in the first place? Maybe... It happens quickly, but Panik looks like he deflects the puck off his stick prior to his being hit.

Panik sees the hit coming and it looks like he starts to crouch. Upshall appears to to lead with his shoulder and follows up and through with the check.

We'll see what he league decides to do, if anything, with the play.

News sport : Clutch forced fumble by Earl Thomas seals No. 1 seed for Seahawks (Video)

With the Seahawks up 20-6 over the Rams with 6:05 to go, safety Earl Thomas made sure his team would clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

The Rams were deep in Seattle territory and quarterback Shaun Hill looked to Benny Cunningham out of the backfield. As Cunningham dove and reached for the goal line with the ball in his right hand, Thomas launched himself and chopped the ball out of Cunningham’s hand before he could break the plane.

The ball then popped free and went out of the end zone, resulting in a touchback that gave the ball back to Seattle.

Following that clutch play from Thomas, the Seahawks were able to run out the clock and seal the victory – their 12th of the season.

The win gives the Seahawks the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye heading into the playoffs. Thomas finished the game with a team-leading 12 tackles.

News sport : Colin Kaepernick nails a sideline mic with a pass

So if you've ever wondered what it sounds like getting hit in the head by a Colin Kaepernick pass, wonder no longer. Kaepernick, on the run, flung up a throwaway, and boom! Right on the parabolic mic. Now imagine that was your skull.

It's been a season to forget for San Francisco, and when one of your most accurate throws all year takes out expensive audio equipment, well ... that's just the kicker. Offseason can't come soon enough.

News sport : Two East Carolina defensive starters ineligible for Birmingham Bowl

Dec 23, 2013; St. Petersburg, FL, USA; East Carolina Pirates nose tackle Terry Williams (54) against the Ohio Bobcats works out prior to the game during the 2013 Beef O Bradys Bowl at Tropicana Field. (Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports) East Carolina will be without two defensive starters in the Birmingham Bowl against Florida.

The program announced Sunday that nose tackle Terry Williams and safety Domonique Lennon have been declared ineligible and won’t be able to play against the Gators on Jan. 3.

“While we are disappointed for Terry and Domonique, we expect everyone to succeed with the support system we have in place for our program,” head coach Ruffin McNeill said. “We talk about being responsible on and off the field as one of our core values, and when certain expectations are not met, no individual is above being held accountable.”

This is an unfortunate way to end the career or Williams, a 6-foot-1, 353-pound fifth-year senior. Williams returned from a knee injury to start eight games and appear in 10 games overall for the Pirates this season. He registered 34 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss this season and earned first-team All-American Athletic Conference honors.

Lennon, a junior, started all 12 games this season at free safety and was third on the team with 65 total tackles.

The 8-4 Pirates will face the 6-5 Gators at noon on Jan. 3.

News sport : Controversial call on trick play helps Jets beat Dolphins (Video)

With the Jets trailing the Dolphins 24-21 midway through the third quarter, Jets offensive coordinator Marty Morhinweg reached into his bag of tricks on a 3rd-and-5 play from the Dolphins’ eight-yard line.

It nearly cost him. Instead, a controversial call may have cost the Dolphins a win.

Mornhinweg lined up quarterback Geno Smith out to the right with running back Bilal Powell in shotgun in the Wildcat formation. With wideout Jeremy Kerley coming in motion from the left, Powell received the snap and pitched it to Kerley, who rolled right and threw to Smith. In Jets-like fashion, the ball appeared to deflect off Smith’s foot and into the arms of Dolphins’ safety Jimmy Wilson, who had nothing but open field ahead.

Instead, the play was whistled dead and ruled an incomplete pass.

Miami challenged the play, but the incomplete ruling was upheld. Instead of a pick-six for the Dolphins and a 10-point lead, the Jets were able to kick a 26-yard field goal to tie the game 24-24.

From then on out, it was all Jets.

Folk added two more field goals in the fourth and Smith, who threw for a career-high 358 yards and three touchdowns, hit tight end Jeff Cumberland for a 23-yard score to seal a 37-24 win.

The Jets finished a disastrous season at 4-12 with the win. Miami dropped to 8-8.

News sport : Aaron Rodgers carted off with calf injury after TD pass

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Aaron Rodgers was helped off the Lambeau Field turf with what appeared to be an aggravation to his left calf injury following a touchdown pass in the late second quarter that gave the Green Bay Packers at 14-0 lead over the Detroit Lions.

Rodgers was carted into the locker room with just over two minutes to go before the half for further examination. He was listed as questionable to return just prior to halftime.

The stadium fell silent when Rodgers went down and briefly erupted when he rose to his feet. As he was assisted off the field. Packers fans chanted, "MVP! MVP!"

Rodgers came into Sunday's game limited in his practice work with a calf injury he suffered in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Packers activated three quarterbacks for the game: Rodgers, Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien, the typically inactive No. 3 option.

Rodgers hit Randall Cobb on an improvisation touchdown pass with 2:30 left in the half. When he left the game, Rodgers had completed 6-of-9 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, with a 13-yard scramble, although he appeared to be moving a bit gingerly all game.

Flynn made a brief appearance just before half after the Lions scored to cut it to 14-7, but did not throw a pass.

News sport : Odell Beckham Jr. makes yet another ridiculous catch

The New York Giants have had yet another atrociously awful season, finishing 6-10 and needing three wins in their final five games to manage even that. And yet there's something hopeful about New York, something that keeps you from writing them off like their divisional brethren the Redskins or their stadium-mates the Jets.

That something is Odell Beckham Jr., the rookie who could pull an eagle out of the sky. He did exactly that on Sunday with another gravity-defying, sticky-fingered Cirque-du-Soleil-worthy grab that you can see above. He also scored a 63-yard touchdown that ended with him running backward into the end zone. No big deal.

Beckham has the circus skills, yes, but he's become one of the most reliable go-to receivers in the game in just his first season. He totaled 91 catches and 1,305 yards in just 12 games, both NFL records. So while he may or may not ever match the beauty from earlier this season against Dallas, there's always the chance that he could.

He's also given the Giants a new rallying cry: if you're gonna stink, at least look good doing it.

News sport : Watch FOX's Tony Siragusa hit a 25-yard field goal (Video)

It has been 13 years since Tony Siragusa last strapped on the pads as a defensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, but apparently he still has some athleticism in him.

Siragusa, who tipped the scales at 340 pounds during his playing days, now works as an analyst for FOX. During Sunday’s broadcast of the Eagles-Giants game, a brief clip of Siragusa booting a 25-yard field goal was shown.

Look at that form! Siragusa went with the left-footed toe technique, played the wind perfectly and booted it right down the middle with a few yards to spare. That’s not as easy as he made it look.

Eagles punter Donnie Jones was clearly impressed and played the part of a referee by putting two arms in the air to signal a successful try.

Well done, Tony.

News sport : Ravens, after a long struggle, finally grab AFC's final playoff spot

The Baltimore Ravens were the final team to grab a playoff spot in the AFC. They did not make it easy.

The Houston Texans came into Sunday needing a lot of help to get the last remaining spot in the AFC playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs needed so much help, getting a playoff spot would have counted as a holiday miracle.

But as the early Week 17 games went to the fourth quarter, the Chiefs and Texans were looking at the out-of-town scoreboard and feeling good about their chances.

The Chiefs needed to beat the Chargers to give themselves, the Texans and the Ravens hope. The Chargers were in with a win. But the Chiefs took control of that game early and led 19-7 for most of the fourth quarter.

The real shocker was happening in Baltimore. A Ravens win and a Chargers loss and Baltimore was in. But Baltimore trailed 10-3 in the fourth quarter to a Browns team down to its third quarterback, undrafted rookie Connor Shaw.

When the Chargers threw incomplete at Kansas City on a fourth-and-goal with 8:32 left in the fourth quarter, trailing 19-7, the field was wide open.

The Texans would get in with a win, a Chargers loss and a Ravens loss. But even they were struggling with the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars at home. Houston trailed 17-14 going into the fourth quarter. That’s what gave the Chiefs hope. The Chiefs needed a win and the Ravens and Texans to both lose, which seemed really improbable until both trailed early in the fourth quarter.

The Texans took a lead early in the fourth quarter and then J.J. Watt, who deserves to be NFL MVP, got his 20th sack of the season on a safety. But even with the best player in football this season doing his best to get the Texans in the playoffs, the Ravens came alive and finally took the playoff spot.

Torrey Smith caught a 16-yard touchdown to put the Ravens ahead 13-10. Then the Ravens put the shorthanded Browns away with a 2-yard touchdown catch by Kamar Aiken with 3:44 remaining. The Ravens won 20-10. All of the excitement over a really unlikely playoff entrant ended a bit anticlimactically. The Chargers ended up losing 19-7. The Texans held on to win 23-17.

The Ravens will have to go on the road as the AFC’s sixth seed. After Sunday’s tougher-than-expected test to get in the playoffs, Baltimore should already feel like the postseason has begun.

News sport : J.J. Watt becomes only two-time 20-sack player, does so on safety

The J.J. Watt-for-MVP campaign just hit overdrive.

Watt notched his third sack on Sunday for the Houston Texans in Week 17 against the Jacksonville Jaguars to become the only player in NFL history to notch two seasons with 20 or more sacks.

Naturally, the play resulted in a safety. Watt ripped past Jaguars left tackle Luke Joeckel, and took down quarterback Blake Bortles for the two-point play.

Watt logged 20.5 sacks in 2012, and he matched that number this season following his third sack of the afternoon. In 64 career games now, Watt has 57 sacks.

Do we need to remind you of his statistically bonkers season?

• 20.5 sacks

• An 80-yard interception return for a touchdown.

• Three forced fumbles.

• Five fumble recovered, and one run back for a score.

• Three offensive touchdowns as a receiver.

That's 32 points scored this season by Watt — more than 2012 first-round running backs Trent Richardson and Doug Martin combined this season.

If the Texans miraculously find their way into the postseason, it could boost Watt's MVP candidacy. Heck, he might not even need it to remind people just how dominant he is.
