News sport : J.J. Watt becomes only two-time 20-sack player, does so on safety

The J.J. Watt-for-MVP campaign just hit overdrive.

Watt notched his third sack on Sunday for the Houston Texans in Week 17 against the Jacksonville Jaguars to become the only player in NFL history to notch two seasons with 20 or more sacks.

Naturally, the play resulted in a safety. Watt ripped past Jaguars left tackle Luke Joeckel, and took down quarterback Blake Bortles for the two-point play.

Watt logged 20.5 sacks in 2012, and he matched that number this season following his third sack of the afternoon. In 64 career games now, Watt has 57 sacks.

Do we need to remind you of his statistically bonkers season?

• 20.5 sacks

• An 80-yard interception return for a touchdown.

• Three forced fumbles.

• Five fumble recovered, and one run back for a score.

• Three offensive touchdowns as a receiver.

That's 32 points scored this season by Watt — more than 2012 first-round running backs Trent Richardson and Doug Martin combined this season.

If the Texans miraculously find their way into the postseason, it could boost Watt's MVP candidacy. Heck, he might not even need it to remind people just how dominant he is.

News sport : Andrew Luck, Tom Brady call it a day after one half of work

NASHVILLE, TN - DECEMBER 28: Andrew Luck #12 of the Indianapolis Colts looks to throw a pass during the game against the Tennessee Titans at LP Field on December 28, 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images) There's a reason most fantasy football leagues end before Week 17: because sometimes the best players play themselves into an early vacation.

Tom Brady and Andrew Luck, quarterbacks of two playoff-bound AFC teams, put in 30 minutes of work and clocked out on Sunday, having done enough for the regular season.

Luck went 10-for-16 for 160 yards and two touchdowns in one half, and racked up the accolades. He set the Colts' franchise passing record (a franchise, remember, that once had a guy named Manning throwing for it). His two touchdowns gave him 86 in the first three years of his career, more than any other player in NFL history except Dan Marino, who had 98. And Luck, who threw his 39th and 40th touchdowns of the year, is the eighth player in NFL history to throw 40 or more touchdowns in a season. He left the game leading the Tennessee Titans 17-7.

Brady, meanwhile, played out the regular season string with little fanfare. He went 8-for-16 with no touchdowns, leaving the Patriots trailing the Buffalo Bills at the half, 17-6. And exactly no one in New England not directly related to backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo cares, since the Patriots have next weekend off prior to their initial divisional round showdown.

Brady's sallow performance will certainly spur questions about momentum, but as he showed earlier this year, Brady has little trouble rebounding from even terrible performances.

News sport : Plenty of seats available across NFL stadiums in Week 17 (Photos)

Like every season, this year’s Week 17 slate is features a few games with playoff implications, but most of Sunday’s games don’t mean a thing.

Those meaningless games don’t exactly inspire a whole lot of fan enthusiasm, and the attendance at a few early games reflects that.

Here’s the scene at Sun Life Stadium in Miami for the Dolphins-Jets game:

It’s not much better at MetLife Stadium, where the Giants are hosting their NFC East rival Eagles.

There are still plenty of seats available at FedEx Field for the Redskins-Cowboys game.

The crowd for the opening kickoff at LP field in Nashville may be the worst of them all.

Yeah, that's not a good look.

We’re going to assume that there will be a few more butts in seats later in Green Bay and Atlanta with the NFC North and NFC South on the line.

News sport : N.C. State WR Bo Hines transferring to Ivy League school

North Carolina State WR Bo Hines announced Saturday that he'd be transferring to an Ivy League school.

Hines, a freshman, was N.C. State's leading receiver in 2014. He had 45 catches for 616 yards and was set to be an integral part of the Wolfpack offense in 2015.

He had three catches for 79 yards in the St. Petersburg Bowl win over UCF on Friday night.

Per the Charlotte Observer, Hines is expected to transfer to Yale.

“I truly enjoyed being Bo’s coach and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said in a statement.

Hines was a three-star recruit from Charlotte, N.C., out of Charlotte Christian High School.

Sophomore TE David Grinnage and sophomore WR Bra'Lon Cherry become the Wolfpack's leading returning receivers. Each had 27 catches in 2014 and Grinnage had 358 yards while Cherry had 354.

News sport : Throwing Darts: Dialing up Le'Veon Bell and friends

Final darts of the season, throwers. Let's try to make them count.

This week's order will be the Colts -7, Panthers +4, Ravens -10, Broncos -14 and Steelers -3.5, using the numbers from Yahoo Pro Football Pickem, as we always do.

I know we're guessing on Colts level of urgency, but I expect them to want to wash out the bad taste from the Dallas blowout. The Titans rarely get in anyone's way.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.5M Week 17 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 21,840 teams paid]

In the ugly NFC South, I want to take the points whenever possible. Jonathan Stewart's rebirth gives the Panthers a nifty, balanced offense. I trust Carolina's defense more than I do Atlanta's.

I love zig-zagging in a game where both sides are coming off results I want to fade. Meet me in Denver. Sure, Oakland's had some nice second-half wins, but they all came at home and against non-playoff teams (unless KC sneaks in on a miracle). Denver has its own fleas, but it's not the team we saw in Week 16. Broncos need this game and although sometimes that comes with a tax (which I will often fade), minus-14 doesn't feel like one to me.

Expect John Harbaugh to have his team ready after last week's nightmare. The Browns are still cleaning up the cups from the Manziel party. You can't make this line high enough for me.

And you better believe I'm fading Cincinnati after they had an everything-break-right kind of week. A.J. Green isn't right, and the Bengals can't mark all of Pittsburgh's weapons (remember the 235 & 3 Le'Veon Bell threw at them in the first meeting?). I really hope we see a Pittsburgh-Denver match in the second round of the playoffs.

Last Week: 3-2

Season: 39-40-1

News sport : Miami RB Duke Johnson announces he's heading to NFL draft

Miami running back Duke Johnson won't stick around for his senior season.

A day after the Hurricanes lost to South Carolina in the Independence Bowl, Johnson announced that he'd be heading to the NFL draft.

"I will be going to the NFL next year," Johnson said via CaneSport.com. "I think at this stage in my life, I'm at the stage in the NFL where backs don't get too much value. I think it's best and get a jump while I can. It's what is best for me and my family."

He also said the decision was for his grandmother, a woman who has been an integral part of Johnson's life.

"At the end of the day everything I do is for her and my grandmother who has sacrificed so much," Johnson said. "This decision is made for them, too, just to help them out and put them in the best situation."

Johnson leaves Miami as the school's all-time leading rusher, a remarkable feat when you consider the likes of Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Edgerrin James and Frank Gore have all come through Miami in recent memory. But none of those players had the career record that Johnson broke this season. It was previously held by Ottis Anderson.

Johnson finishes his career with 3.519 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns. He had 1,652 yards in 2014 and 10 touchdowns. He likely would have close to 4,000 career yards if it wasn't for a broken ankle he suffered against Florida State in 2013. The injury ended his season.

A likely mid-round pick, Johnson had 24 carries for 132 yards against South Carolina. He joins an impressive list of underclassmen running backs who have declared for the 2015 NFL draft. Before Johnson's decision, Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon, Boise State's Jay Ajayi and Georgia's Todd Gurley all said they were going pro.

News sport : Texas Bowl: It's a Southwest Conference matchup of 6-6 teams

Texas Bowl

Arkansas (6-6) vs. Texas (6-6)

Houston

Dec 29, 2014

If you have to pit two 6-6 teams against each other, you might as well do it with a historical rivalry in mind.

Texas and Arkansas are two former Southwest Conference rivals that used to engage in some epic games, but the two teams haven’t played since 2008. However, this game has the potential to get Arkansas on the right side of this rivalry after losing the last two in the series.

And Arkansas has to be feeling pretty confident after winning two of its final three — both wins against to 25 teams — become bowl eligible.

It’s fair to say Arkansas was the best 6-6 team in the country and it certainly played the toughest schedule with eight of those opponents ranked in the Top 25. However, the Arkansas offense, especially its running game, always seemed to be step-for-step with its competition. That’s due in part to Arkansas gigantic offensive line, which allowed the running game to average 220.3 yards per game, which ranked 28th in the country.

Running backs Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins have both rushed for more than 1,000 yards this season and are responsible for 23 of the Razorbacks’ 30 touchdowns. The strong running game has taken some of the pressure off quarterback Brandon Allen. Allen is coming into the game recovering from a hip injury he suffered against on Nov. 22 against Ole Miss. He played the following week against Missouri, but was clearly hobbled. Coach Bret Bielema said Allen is completely healthy heading into this contest.

The Arkansas offense should have a major advantage against a Texas offense that has struggled all season. Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes has thrown 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, and eight of those interceptions have come in losses. He’s coming off a game where he threw a career-high four interceptions in a 48-10 rout by TCU. Swoopes will face a similarly tough defense in Arkansas, which ranks 17th in country allowing just 20.3 points per game.

There’s no doubt both teams are looking for a win to propel their respective squads into a better 2015. Both of these programs are in a rebuilding phase and a win in the Texas Bowl could be a sign of positive things to come.

Vegas odds: Arkansas (-6.5)

FUN FACTArkansas faced eight teams ranked in the AP Top 25 and though the Razorbacks only won two of those games, it was only outscored 177-165. Only two of the losses against a ranked opponents were by more than a touchdown.

PREDICTIONS

Graham: Arkansas was so close to being a 10-win team this season that it’s difficult to pick against them. The Razorbacks offense is better than Texas’ and I don’t think the defense can keep the Longhorns in the game forever.Arkansas 35, Texas 17.

Nick: How can Bret Bielema keep trolling Texas and Charlie Strong? Maybe he'll run a five-wide empty backfield set on the first drive? That'd be awesome. Arkansas is the better team here, and as long as they avoid a costly mistake (which is a huge if) the Hogs win. Arkansas 26, Texas 20

Sam: Arkansas plays an old-school brand of football that was really effective late in the year. If the Razorbacks can get out to an early lead and force Tyrone Swoopes to throw more than he likes, Bret Bielema's team should be able to win the game. Arkansas 20, Texas 13.

Chelsea frustated by Southampton

Chelsea were held to a surprise draw by a resilient Southampton side in their Premier League clash at St Mary's.

|||

London - Chelsea's Premier League title hopes suffered a blow when they were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by a resilient Southampton side at St Mary's.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris inspired his team to a feisty 0-0 draw with Manchester United in the early kickoff and Chelsea started sluggishly at fourth-placed Southampton.

Sadio Mane gave the hosts a deserved 17th-minute lead, running clear of the defence to slot coolly past Thibaut Courtois.

The visitors struggled to produce their usual fluent attacking play but equalised just before halftime when Eden Hazard brilliantly controlled a fine pass from Cesc Fabregas, cut inside and stroked the ball into the net.

Chelsea poured forward in search of a winner but were frustrated by well-organised Southampton who had midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin sent off in the closing stages after receiving a second yellow card.

Jose Mourinho's team remained top of the table but their lead will be cut to one point if Manchester City beat Burnley later on Sunday.

Spurs survived a wave of early United pressure but threatened to end the visitors' eight-match unbeaten run in the closing stages as tempers flared at White Hart Lane.

“They had a great first half but we stayed in the game because we were strong defensively,” man-of-the-match Lloris told BT Sport. “The spirit was great.”

United, who had won seven of their last eight games, stayed third in the table, 10 points behind Chelsea, and Tottenham remained sixth.

“We lost two points. We had the best performance of the season in the first half and could have scored four or five goals,” United manager Louis van Gaal said.

“We were fantastic. But when you don't score goals you cannot win. The second half was a struggle.”

The visitors, who named an unchanged starting line-up for the first time in 85 matches, dominated the first half.

Frenchman Lloris made a fine diving save to tip over Ashley Young's fierce curling shot and Phil Jones had a close-range effort correctly ruled out for offside.

The influential Juan Mata's deflected free kick also crashed against the post and Robin van Persie should have scored after running on to a sublime pass from Michael Carrick but Lloris blocked his tame shot.

Referee Jon Moss brandished six yellow cards and Spurs nearly sneaked victory eight minutes from time when midfielder Ryan Mason blazed the ball over after good hold-up play from Harry Kane. – Reuters

News sport : Kevin Garnett blows in David West's ear in a rather 'aggressive' fashion (Video)

For all the touching tributes and sober analysis of Kevin Garnett’s future as an NBA player beyond the expiration of his contract this summer, it is necessary to remind ourselves that he’s still the same sort of KG that we’ve grown to love, fear, and roll our eyes at since 1995.

I mean, the dude blew in a guy’s ear on Saturday night. Watch:

To recap: Garnett fouled Indiana Pacers forward David West, and then loudly stomped around Barclays Center complaining about West’s supposed flopping. Garnett followed this by blowing in West’s ear as the Pacers set up to in-bound the ball, West then brushed Garnett off and received a technical foul for his troubles.

All this took place in the first quarter, mind you.

Obviously, Garnett’s move reminds of Lance Stephenson’s infamous trolling of LeBron James during last spring’s postseason, but West will have none of those comparisons. To the media following the contest, via Newsday:

“I think Lance's was more sensual. That was an aggressive blow.”

That would be Kevin Garnett, king of the “aggressive blow” on defense.

The Nets fell in the game and failed to add to what had been a three-game winning streak. The highest paid roster in the NBA fell at home by 25 points to an undermanned Pacers squad in what should have been an embarrassing defeat – presuming anything embarrasses these guys any more. The Pacers actually went on a 102-71 run to end the game, following Garnett's blow and West's technical foul

“Stars” Deron Williams and Brook Lopez came off the bench for Brooklyn, and missed 10 of 12 shots on the evening. From the New York Post:

“They didn’t play very well,” Nets coach Lionel Hollins said of his two stars. “They have to play better for us to be better, or them to get more playing time and more consistent playing time.”

[…]

“He’s right,” Williams said. “We definitely have to play better. We’re two of the highest-paid players on the team, and it’s our responsibility to play better. Hopefully we can accept that challenge. I do, and I think Brook does, and we move forward.”

Perhaps. The Nets probably aren’t in danger of falling out of the East’s pathetic playoff bracket, they’re currently just percentage points behind the seventh-seeded Miami Heat, and ninth place Orlando is three games back and rebuilding. Still, a 25-point home loss to Indiana?

Garnett finished with six points and a rebound in 14 minutes. At least he didn’t pretend to bite anyone.

Mashaba’s selection dilemma

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba admits he faces a selection conundrum ahead of the 2015 Caf Africa Cup of Nations.

|||

Johannesburg – Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba admits he faces a selection conundrum ahead of the 2015 Caf Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

“It's going to be tough to select the final 23 players. The bulk of the players in camp are the ones who helped us during the qualifiers and none of them want to remain behind,” Mashaba said on Sunday.

The national team, consisting of 27 home-based players had held their first training session at the University of Johannesburg.

Overseas-based players were expected to start arriving later during the day, with captain Dean Furman only set to link-up with the squad on January 4.

Mashaba has the tough task of trimming the squad down to 23

players for the continental showdown.

The final team announcement is set to be made on Tuesday before the championship taking place from January 17 to February 8.

After the first team practice, Mashaba said a lot of work lied for those players hoping to make the grade.

“From the training session this morning, there is a bit of lethargy in their performance. They were not as vibrant as one would have expected.

“But I think the second training session will be better than this one. It is going to be tough. You can see that every player wants to be part of the final squad.”

The foreign-based contingent would have to fight for their positions in the final squad, he said.

“It is not a problem as such, but we would have loved for everybody to come and compete for a position. We don't want people to come here guaranteed of a place in the team but unfortunately it is not in our hands, they have programmes that they need to complete at their clubs before coming to the national team.”

Bafana would be tested against Zambia in a friendly at the Orlando Stadium on January 4. – Sapa

News sport : Jim Harbaugh reportedly heading to Michigan

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh will reportedly be the next coach of the Michigan Wolverines.

According to CSN Bay Area, Harbaugh has agreed to be Michigan's coach.

Harbaugh's move to Michigan was first tweeted by John U. Bacon on Saturday night. Bacon, a professor at Michigan, is the author of "Fourth and Long," a book about college football.

Michigan officials were in the San Francisco Bay Area over the weekend to meet with Harbaugh in the hopes of securing his services as the Wolverines' next head coach. The 49ers play the Arizona cardinals on Sunday.

No contract numbers have been reported along with Harbaugh's reported agreement, but a previous report said that Harbaugh had been offered nearly $50 million for six years at Michigan. The figure, if it becomes his contract, would make him the highest paid coach in the NFL and college football.

Harbaugh has been the coach of the 49ers for four seasons. He would replace Brady Hoke at Michigan, who was fired after the end of the 2014 season following Michigan's 5-7 record. When Hoke was hired at Michigan four years ago, Harbaugh was mentioned as a candidate.

Hoke's record in his four seasons at Michigan was 31-20. Harbaugh was 29-21 in four years at Stanford before taking the 49ers job.

Spurs, United share spoils

Manchester United squandered an opportunity to put pressure on Premier League pace-setters Chelsea and Manchester City after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United squandered an opportunity to put pressure on Premier League pace-setters Chelsea and Manchester City after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Tottenham Hotspur.

Louis van Gaal's side created a string of chances, with Juan Mata hitting the woodwork and Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris producing a number of excellent saves, but had to settle for a point.

The draw extended United's unbeaten run to nine games, but left them nine points below Chelsea and six behind City, both of whom play later. Tottenham are five points further back in sixth place.

United manager van Gaal kept faith with the team that had beaten Newcastle United 3-1 on Boxing Day and he saw his side completely dominate the first half at a sunny but chilly White Hart Lane.

Lloris saved from Radamel Falcao, twice, Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young, while Mata hit the post with a deflected free-kick and Phil Jones was denied by an offside flag after squeezing a header over the line.

United lost Antonio Valencia to injury at half-time, with Rafael da Silva coming on, but continued to make chances. Mata crossed for van Persie to volley over and later spooned a cut-back from Rafael into the stands.

But Spurs took control as the game wore on, with United goalkeeper David de Gea saving from Andros Townsend, Federico Fazio and Christian Eriksen, while Harry Kane cleverly teed up Ryan Mason to fire over.

Chelsea will look to defend their three-point advantage at the top of the table later on Sunday when they visit fourth-place Southampton. Second-place Manchester City host second-bottom Burnley.

Meanwhile, third-bottom Crystal Palace will begin life without sacked manager Neil Warnock when they travel to Queens Park Rangers, where caretaker coach Keith Millen will be in charge of the visiting side. – AFP

West Ham in bid to slash debt

West Ham United are trying to raise 80 million pounds ($124.4 million) to clear some of their debt by selling 20 percent of the club, co-owner David Sullivan told the Sunday Telegraph.

|||

London - West Ham United are trying to raise 80 million pounds ($124.4 million) to clear some of their debt by selling 20 percent of the club, co-owner David Sullivan told the Sunday Telegraph.

Sullivan said West Ham would be worth 400 million pounds when they move to London's Olympic Stadium in 2016.

“We've no desire to give up the whole club but we're still 110 million pounds in debt - albeit now 55 million pounds of that is to ourselves,” Sullivan said.

“So the third-party debt has been halved but only because we put the money in.”

Sullivan bought West Ham with co-chairman David Gold in 2010 when the club was valued at 105 million pounds.

“We lost 30 million when we went down (to the Championship in 2011) and we made 10 million on paper last year,” Sullivan said.

“I'd love someone to come in and pay 20 percent and the money would not go to us, it would go to the club.”

The move to the Olympic Stadium should cover most of the debt.

“But if it doesn't happen we'll dig into our pockets and keep the club afloat,” Sullivan added.

West Ham are riding high in fifth place in the Premier League and Sullivan admitted that manager Sam Allardyce could leave Upton Park at the end of the season when his contract expires.

“I must say if come April we are where we are now, which is extremely unlikely but is possible, we'd probably sit down a month early and say, 'Look Sam, do you want to stay or do you want to go?'. Sam may decide he wants to go out a winner.”

West Ham brought in nine players before this season, including strikers Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho, and midfielder Alex Song.

Sakho, who has scored seven league goals, was signed on the recommendation of West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady's brother and Sullivan said Allardyce had been against the move. – Reuters

Van Gaal has Rooney, RVP in harmony

Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie haven’t always seen eye-to-eye. Louis Van Gaal has quickly changed that.

|||

Nothing will have gladdened Louis van Gaal more this season than what happened in the aftermath of Manchester United’s third and final goal against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

No sooner had Robin van Persie expertly headed in Wayne Rooney’s pinpoint diagonal cross than the Dutchman turned to his team-mate, pointed at him in gratitude before they embraced like old friends.

It hasn’t always been like that. Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes couldn’t get two of the most talented players in the Premier League to put aside their egos, and felt forced to take sides.

Ferguson was a Van Persie man to the extent that Rooney ended up hellbent on trying to move to Chelsea. Moyes was a Rooney man, leaving Van Persie’s friends angry that their striker was being over-trained in spite of being vulnerable to injuries.

As he prepares to enter a cauldron at White Hart Lane today — Van Gaal spurned Tottenham earlier this year once the opportunity arose at Old Trafford — the Dutchman can be proud of his biggest achievement at his new club, making Van Persie and Rooney live up to the United part of their club’s name.

Rooney has been given the captain’s armband that Van Persie coveted, RVP has the main centre-forward’s position that Wayne coveted. And it hasn’t seemed to cause any ill-feeling.

Against Newcastle, Van Persie peeled wide from his No 9 berth to give Rooney the space to run from deep and score twice in the first half. Rooney then unselfishly planted a ball on top of Van Persie’s head to set up a 3-1 victory.

Remember, this was a pairing who passed to each other only once in the entire 90 minutes against Olympiakos in the Champions League first leg last season — and that was from a kick off. They didn’t even celebrate goals together at times.

The word Van Gaal uses often to try and explain the camaraderie inside the United camp after seven wins and a draw in their past eight matches is ‘social’. It means a set of players who are happy to work and play together, only interested on the pitch in benefitting the team rather than themselves.

‘The attitude of my players is excellent and they have a very high social standard,’ says Van Gaal. ‘That is very important because football is a team sport between co-operating human beings. You have to be social. We have a high social standard in the team. Wherever I am in my career, I shall guide and manage the team in a social way of treating each other. It is also part of my philosophy. I cannot explain that in one page, it is a lot of pages. If you read my book, it is all in it.

‘Rooney and Van Persie are very social players. They have trained together already for six months this season so it is normal they shall improve. When we are half a year further on, it shall improve even more. That’s why we have training.’

The simplicity of the message makes you wonder why Ferguson and Moyes could not pull off the same trick, particularly when the pair’s children attend the same school, to help their off-field relationship.

Van Gaal has managed some of the biggest names in football with Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Holland, so he has made solving one or two personal issues at United look a doddle. Rooney is happy to play in midfield for the team, Van Persie respects Rooney as his captain.

Van Persie says of his relationship with the manager: ‘I worked with Van Gaal for two years with Holland so I knew how he trained. I knew exactly what to expect. He warned me after the World Cup that it would take time for me to get there (top form) but I would be very very fit.

‘I am feeling very well now, which I wasn’t at the start of the season. So he’s right. Every single player, when you are working under Van Gaal, is balancing on the edge — physically and mentally you are concentrating every single minute of the day. He expects us to think about football just before we go to bed as well. It is very intense. But I love it and it is a very good way.

‘Straight away when he got the job, I realised it would be very intense years but great years as well, because of the way he trains. Every session he puts on there is always an idea and he explains himself well.’

Former player Andy Cole noted in Friday’s match programme that United seem a happier club.

Van Gaal agrees: ‘I think so, I think when you win six times in a row, and you draw, and you win again, then the spirit is fantastic. I think there is happiness in the club because we are together working for one goal. We have a very good communication between all the employees in Manchester United and that is very important.

‘And we can celebrate parties, Christmas parties, and that is also important. We can work but we can also celebrate and that is very good.’

Of course, in-form Tottenham will provide a sterner test than an understrength Newcastle did. Spurs fans will remember the club thought Van Gaal was going to be their new boss until United fluttered their eyelids while he was at his holiday home in Portugal and prompted a *-turn.

Van Gaal is expecting a hot reception but it does not bother him.

‘I cannot change that. I don’t have any influence on it so I won’t make any trouble with them (Spurs fans). I’ve managed with this kind of thing at a lot of clubs. The summer is history. We have to play and speak about what is happening now. Now it is (Mauricio) Pochettino, the new manager, and I am the new manager of Manchester United.’

Of greater concern will be Tottenham’s run of four wins in a row under Pochettino, who eventually filled the vacancy from Southampton. In particular, Christian Eriksen has been a major influence, making those who thought he would be too lightweight for the Premier League look foolish.

‘That theory is rubbish, always rubbish,’ said Van Gaal. ‘When you have high standards you can play in the Premier League. When you’re good on the ball, you can play, and Eriksen is good on the ball. It doesn’t matter when you are less physical, not so tall or wide. Did you see Juan Mata for us against Newcastle? Two great assists. I think the selection of Tottenham is a high-standard selection so it’s normal they’re doing well.’

Angel di Maria’s pelvic strain means he is likely to miss out along with Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind. Van Gaal is also opposed having to play 48 hours after United’s previous game, something Uefa and Fifa do not allow in their competitions. Even so, as long as he has Van Persie and Rooney singing from the same hymn-sheet, Van Gaal will fancy his side’s chances at the club he could have joined. – Mail On Sunday
