News sport : 49ers GM confirms that Michigan has reached out about Jim Harbaugh

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh walks off the field after the 49ers lost 38-35 in overtime to the San Diego Chargers in an NFL football game in Santa Clara, Calif., Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez) As the speculation linking 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh to the opening at Michigan continues to swirl, San Francisco’s general manager Trent Baalke confirmed on Monday that the school has reached out to the organization about Harbaugh.

Harbaugh, a former Michigan quarterback, has been viewed as a candidate to succeed Brady Hoke for months. With the NFL season approaching its end, it could finally come to fruition with Harbaugh’s job status being addressed following San Francisco’s season finale against Arizona on Sunday.

"I don't know that it's been offered to him. I don't know that it's been offered at all," Baalke said, per TheWolverine.com. "I haven't seen a report that the contract has been handed to him and he's mulling it over. I think the University of Michigan, in reaching out, did handle it correctly.

“As I look at it, guys, it's very simple – he's the head football coach of the San Francisco 49ers. You read a lot of speculation. We heard the same thing about Texas and USC and others making overtures. He's a good football coach. Anytime there's a good opportunity like the University of Michigan or the University of Texas, they do that. That's expected. You'd rather have somebody coveted than somebody who's not."

Harbaugh has one season remaining on his contract with the 49ers, but his relationship with the organization has reportedly gone south over the course of the season.

Michigan reportedly offered Harbaugh a six-year, $48 million contract. He has also been linked to the Oakland Raiders. If there’s one thing we do know, Michigan really wants Harbaugh to be their man.

News sport : Congratulations, Tyler Thigpen, you get to be a Cleveland Browns QB

A Cleveland Browns season that began with glimmerings of hope that sparked into a bonfire has now dwindled to embers, and the man tasked with poking at the the last of the dying glow could be ... Tyler Thigpen.

Yes, the end result of the Great Hoyer-Manziel Debate is that both guys are pretty much useless at the moment, and so the Browns have brought back Thigpen, a member of the team during preseason, to serve as a potential quarterback. Also in the mix: Connor Shaw, the rookie QB who has spent the entire year on the Browns' practice squad.

Both Cleveland starting QBs were ineffective toward the end of the year, but more importantly, both have suffered significant injury. Manziel is out for the year with a hamstring injury he sustained during Sunday's game against Carolina. Hoyer is battling a shoulder injury that likewise could keep him sidelined.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.5M Week 17 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 21,840 teams paid]

Thigpen has played for the Chiefs, Dolphins, and Bills, but has not taken a regular-season snap since 2012. He and/or Shaw will be facing a highly motivated Baltimore squad, which needs a victory to have any hope of a playoff berth.

This week marks the end of a dramatic comedown for the Browns, who spent much of the year very much alive in the AFC playoff hunt. But unexpected losses, poor efforts, and a general "Cleveland gonna Cleveland" mentality settled over the team, which now goes from having two potential franchise QBs to zero.

News sport : Several applicants for Wisconsin head coaching job listed video game skills

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, right, laughs as Paul Chryst, Wisconsin's new football coach, responds to a reporter's question at the Nicholas-Johnson Pavilion in Madison, Wis., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014. (AP Photo/Wisconsin State Journal, M.P. King) Wisconsin’s coaching search, which ultimately landed Paul Chryst from Pitt, moved quickly, but that doesn’t mean Chryst didn’t have some serious competition to land the role.

According to an open records request filed by the Associated Press, 45 others applied for the opening, created when Gary Andersen left for Oregon State. Among those who applied were three men who you may not have heard of, but they have some unique qualifications that were probably tough for Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez to pass up.

One man, Jarrad Dann of Chandler, Ariz., listed himself as “The Man, The Myth, The Legend,” and claimed his “ridiculously good” ability at playing NCAA Football on XBOX 360 qualified him for the job. It’s hard to argue with him.

Elsewhere, a man from Racine, Wis., named Greg Miller listed his skills in “Madden ’92, Bill Walsh ’93, and NCAA Football ’96 and ’97.” He also has some coaching experience of his own.

“I have further successfully coached from my sofa every Saturday since 1987,” Miller, who said he was unemployed and living with his parents, wrote in his cover letter to Alvarez.

On top of that, Alvarez also turned down a very intriguing candidate in Arturo Bonomie, a YMCA coach for first graders, who would have accepted the position in a package deal with his wife.

“People tell me I can give one heck of a good pep talk on the sidelines and my wife makes a mean Gatorade,” Bonomie wrote.

Ultimately, Alvarez hired Chryst, a former Badgers quarterback and longtime assistant coach. Per the AP, Chryst “submitted his application on Dec. 12,” two days after Andersen’s departure.

Per ESPN.com, his cover letter in its entirety read:

This is my expression of interest of Head Football Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My resume is attached. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Personally, I would have gone with the guy whose wife makes the awesome Gatorade, but that’s just me.

News sport : Tony Romo has deadly, painful aim when throwing footballs

Ever wanted to catch a pass from an NFL quarterback? Careful what you wish for.

David Feherty is an esteemed golf commentator and a reasonably proficient athlete. But being from Northern Ireland, Feherty lacks a bit of the ingrained football knowledge that Americans have, so when he prepared to catch a pass from Tony Romo, well, it didn't go so well.

Romo, of course, is no slouch on the golf course himself, having played in many a professional tournament and attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open. He's sticking to his day job for now, though a few passes like that to Dez Bryant could put his status in doubt.

In any event, Hans Moleman is suitably impressed:

Try not to cringe too much at this one, friends.

News sport : Only one spot remains in AFC after Cincinnati Bengals win

The Cincinnati Bengals made things a lot easier for those who chart playoff scenarios by pulling off the minor upset of the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

The Bengals clinched a playoff spot with the win. Instead of going into Week 17 with both wild-card spots in the AFC unsettled, now there's just one. The winner of the Bengals' game Sunday night at the Pittsburgh Steelers wins the AFC North, and the loser will go on the road for wild-card weekend.

The Bengals' win also cleared up some seeds. The New England Patriots are the No. 1 seed with the Broncos' loss. If the Broncos win Sunday at home as big favorites against the Oakland Raiders, they'll be the No. 2 seed. The Bengals are the only other AFC team that can get a bye, and they need a win and a Broncos loss (there are other scenarios involving ties, and if ties suddenly start happening in Week 17 to complicate this thing, I give up). The Broncos also clinch a bye if the Bengals lose.

The Indianapolis Colts are locked into the No. 4 seed and will host the loser of the Bengals-Steelers game on wild-card weekend; either AFC North second-place team will be the No. 5 seed. The Steelers can't move to the second seed, even with a win and a Broncos loss.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.5M Week 17 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 21,840 teams paid]

That picture is certainly a lot clearer than figuring out all the moving parts among the teams who have clinched in the NFC, but unlike the NFC, the AFC still has a wild-card spot up for grabs. That team will be the No. 6 seed, and here are the teams still alive for that spot and who they play in Week 17, in order of how clear their path is:

San Diego Chargers (at Kansas City): Thanks to that incredible comeback at San Francisco, they win and they're in. Easy. Well, except the part about winning, because they've already lost once to the Chiefs this season, and Arrowhead Stadium is a tough place to play in December.

Baltimore Ravens (vs. Cleveland Browns): If the Ravens win and the Chargers lose, Baltimore gets the final spot. And Baltimore will be playing a Browns team that might be without its top two quarterbacks.

Houston Texans (vs. Jacksonville Jaguars): It's pretty amazing the Texans are alive at this point, considering they're on their fourth quarterback (and none of their first three quarterbacks were all that great). They need a win, a Chargers loss and a Ravens loss. The Ravens part of that equation will be tough.

Kansas City Chiefs (vs. San Diego): The Chiefs need to win and get a Ravens loss and a Texans loss. Considering both of those teams are close to double-digit favorites (and just getting a win against the Chargers will be tough), the Chiefs need a bit of a holiday miracle to pull this off.

US defender to join Spurs

United States defender DeAndre Yedlin is joining Tottenham in January, the north London club announced.

|||

London – United States defender DeAndre Yedlin is joining Tottenham in January, the north London club announced.

The 21-year-old signed a four-year deal with Spurs in August with his move to White Hart Lane from the Seattle Sounders delayed until the end of the Major League Soccer season.

“We are pleased to confirm that DeAndre Yedlin will be joining the Club in January,” a statement on the Premier League club's website read.

Yedlin ended his MLS stint in style, helping the Sounders win the Western Conference title and Supporter's Shield before losing to the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Conference Finals, and big things are expected from him by Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

“DeAndre is a young player with great potential who has already achieved a lot in Major League Soccer, Pochettino said.

“It is important for his development that he is given the time to adapt to his new surroundings both on and off the pitch and we believe that by coming to us in January it will give him the best opportunity to do so.”

Yedlin, who has 10 international caps, made three appearances for the USA at the World Cup, in group games against Portugal and Germany and in their last-16 defeat to Belgium.

Yedlin's arrival comes after Spurs brought in Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Eric Dier, Benjamin Stambouli and Federico Fazio during the close season. – Sapa-AFP

Wenger upbeat ahead of busy period

Arsene Wenger is upbeat about a strong second half of the season showing from an Arsenal side set to capitalise on the return of injured players.

|||

Arsene Wenger is upbeat about a strong second half of the season showing from an Arsenal side set to capitalise on the return of injured players like Mesut Ozil and Mikel Arteta.

Wenger expects Ozil and Arteta to return to action in January, while Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny are due back imminently to help reignite the Gunners' quest for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The Christmas schedule features fixtures against QPR, West Ham and Southampton and Wenger believes Arsenal, who occupy sixth place in the table, will soon be in a position to realise their potential.

“To give absolutely everything in every single game until the end of the season,” replied Wenger when asked to outline his aspirations for his team heading into the festive period on Tuesday.

“I believe that with the injuries coming back we will have a much stronger squad than we had for the past two months.

“I believe 2015 can be very exciting if we manage to get our injured players back and have a good run.

“Finishing in the top four is always the minimum required here. We have the Champions League and we have the FA Cup and we want to come back in a much stronger position in the Premier League, and I think we will.

“Our Christmas is not an easy schedule - it's a tough schedule. There are three games in a very short period of time and we can make up points.

“It's a period where you have an opportunity to make points. Our opponents will think that as well, but let's just put the performances in and capitalise on it.”

Ozil and Arteta are on target for January comebacks from knee and calf injuries and although Ramsey and Koscielny may miss the Boxing Day showdown with hamstring and calf problems, they could both be in action against Southampton on New Year's Day.

“Ozil will be back at the beginning of January. His rehab has gone well but it took time. He works very hard. He is very focused. Fitness-wise, he is there,” Wenger said.

“Arteta is progressing well. He had a little setback with an ankle problem but it should be very quick now. He will not play before January.

“Ramsey has a chance to be fit for Southampton. The closest at the moment is Koscielny. I believe he's a bit short for QPR, maybe has a chance for West Ham on Sunday.”

Arsenal are four points adrift of fourth place West Ham and lost further ground on Champions League qualification after conceding an equaliser deep into stoppage time of Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

Per Mertesacker's defending for Martin Skrtel's header has been criticised, but Wenger refuses to single out his Germany World Cup winner for blame.

“I don't want to go into any individual assessment. I believe Mertesacker gives his best and that on the corner we conceded it was a more organisational and collective problem because no one talks,” Wenger said.

“It is difficult for the players who played at the World Cup. I said many times you don't see them really before November and that is the case.

“It's very difficult for them to get the hunger straight away to go Stoke and win. It takes time to settle and to come back to normal life.” – AFP

Fergie backs Van Gaal to deliver

Sir Alex Ferguson has broken his silence over Louis van Gaal’s modern Manchester United by predicting his old team will become a force in the Barclays Premier League in the new year.

|||

Sir Alex Ferguson has broken his silence over Louis van Gaal’s modern Manchester United by predicting his old team will become a force in the Barclays Premier League in the new year.

Ferguson has largely watched from afar as Van Gaal and his injury-hit squad have struggled to keep up with Chelsea and Manchester City at the top of the table.

But now Ferguson has backed Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney to propel United’s charge.

‘First of all, Louis van Gaal,’ said Ferguson. ‘I don’t know how he can expect to get the best results with the number of injuries he has had. When he gets the best players back — you watch United. He is a great coach and will do well.

‘Michael Carrick is the best English player in the game. Robin van Persie, the World Cup maybe has taken a little bit out of him, but you watch him in the second half of the season. He’ll be fine. Rooney is flying again and will always get you a goal.’

Sir Alex, who was speaking to Clare Balding for a BT Sport Christmas Day special, also addressed the issue of United’s new players and one of his own best recent signings, keeper David de Gea.

‘I’m not interested in what is happening with the players they have brought in because they need time,’ he said.

‘When I took Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic in January of the same year they were all over the place. They took five months to get used to playing for Manchester United — the culture, the history of the club — and these new players will be exactly the same.

‘The one that is most pleasing for me of the present lot is David de Gea. When we bought him as a kid, he was frail, but he had ability. He has special talents and he is showing that now. I’m really pleased for that kid.’

City and Chelsea are title favourites and if Ferguson could pick a winner it would be the Londoners, not just because of United’s rivalry with City but due to his friendship with Jose Mourinho.

Ferguson added: ‘It is unfair really. He’s good-looking, he has the George Clooney bits in his hair. But he is a great example. He is learning all the time, he has a determination.’

Ferguson perhaps found his match in Mourinho when it came to mind games and the Scot revealed his famous habit of looking at his watch late in games was a con trick.

Asked if the ‘Fergie time’ act intimidated rivals, he said: ‘Absolutely. That’s why I used to go with my watch. I never looked at it. Honestly. But it gets across to the opponents and the referee. It was just a little trick.’

Sir Alex Ferguson was speaking to Clare Balding as part of a BT Sport Christmas Day double-bill of ‘Clare Balding Meets’ which features exclusive interviews with Sir Alex and Jose Mourinho. Watch the full interviews on BT Sport 1 from 3.30pm. – Daily Mail

Mourinho lauds great Chelsea performance

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho hailed his side's 2-0 Premier League victory at Stoke City as one of their most significant yet this season.

|||

STOKE-ON-TRENT, United Kingdom – Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho hailed his side's 2-0 Premier League victory at Stoke City as one of their most significant yet this season.

A second minute header from John Terry and Cesc Fabregas' finish in the second half gave the Londoners a three point lead at the top of thew table over over Manchester City at Christmas.

But it was the manner of the victory that pleased Mourinho the most with Chelsea forced to win a physical battle.

“To win here we must play a very good game and we did it because we adapted well to their style of play,” he said.

“When we had the ball we tried not to lose our identity and play our game.

“They are always strong in this stadium, the crowd are always behind them. They have good players and a good bench. It was a very difficult victory.

“It was a victory that means a bit more than the three points. It was not just difficult but you need more than just your quality to win here.

“The players coped well with the difficult style and were not afraid to have responsibilities and our creative players were not afraid to assume the game.

“Our defensive players were very solid. Only with a great team performance was it possible to beat Stoke.”

Mourinho saluted captain Terry who scored in the Premier League for a 15th consecutive season.

“He is very dangerous in set piece, he is very good player in the air, he is always a threat,” he said.

“More importantly is the way he has been playing this season again. When I came here last year he was in a bit of trouble, his career was a bit up and down. He was not playing regularly for Chelsea.

“But suddenly in the last two years he is playing basically every game and for me at the same level as when I was here 2004-2007.

“It's just our way of work. He adapted well to our training methodology with his body type.

“He feels sharp and fast in good conditions. He is happy and when you are happy and feel confident it feels easier in every job. Football is very specific on that. He knows I trust him and is very confident and playing very well.”

Stoke full back Phil Bardsley was booked for a bad tackle on Belgian star Eden Hazard in the first half but Mourinho, who was incensed at the time, thought it should have seen him sent off.

“From my position and in the flesh it looks for me a red card but I don't know,” said Mourinho.

“What I know is that if it was a bad tackle it was the only one. It was a clean game but an aggressive one. The referee kept the game under control. The players were fair.

“It was a good fight. Physicality, duels, lots of long balls. But the game was perfectly clean and correct. If it was a red card it was an isolated action. And we need to consider that.”

His Stoke counterpart Mark Hughes took heart from his side's display as they matched Chelsea all the way until Fabregas' strike on 78 minutes.

“It was the worst possible start,” said Hughes, who numbered Chelsea among his clubs as a player.

“You don't want to concede early to a top quality side like Chelsea. We've talked till we are blue - or red in the face.

“But we stuck at it.

“We did not offer them too many clear cut chances. It looked like we might get back on level terms.”

Unsurprisingly Hughes – a combative player himself in his prime for Manchester United and Barcelona – didn't see Bardsley's as being a red card offence.

“It was two teams committed to winning the game. I see no harm in that, every challenge was an honest one. That physicality will always be there. It was more to do with an outstanding team,” said the 51-year-old Welshman.

“At the time of the Bardsley one I thought it was just a mistimed challenge. I've not seen it but I think my instinct was yellow was fair.” – Sapa-AFP

News sport : Manu Ginobili was as creative as ever in win over Clippers

There is a longstanding NBA argument in which one side calls the San Antonio Spurs boring and the other contends that there is beauty to be found in a higher form of basketball craft. Yet this disagreement often seems to miss one pretty obvious point — that Manu Ginobili, four-time champion, plays with the sort of creativity and verve that entertainment-minded fans crave. He's the guy who everyone can (or should) agree on.

Ginobili was up to his usual tricks in Monday's contest against the Los Angeles Clippers. The best came fairly late, with four minutes remaining in regulation and the Spurs up just 112-106 after leading by 12 at the half. Taking the ball from Danny Green in the early offense, Manu threw a wonderful over-and-behind-the-head pass to get Green a wide-open three-pointer:

That play came three quarters after another classic Ginobili move in which he sent elite shot-blocker DeAndre Jordan flying with a quasi-Dream Shake and got around Jordan for a second time with a double-clutch lay-up:

Manu ended up with a very efficient 19 points (7-of-11 FG) and 10 assists in only 27 minutes, playing his usual role as bench star as the Spurs ended up with a 125-118 win to end a four-game losing streak. San Antonio shot an absurd 63.6 percent from the field (including 13-of-23 from deep) in one of their customary offensive displays.

Tough Caf obstacle for Chiefs

Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs were handed a difficult route in the CAF Champions League.

|||

Johannesburg – Runaway Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs were handed a difficult route if they want to be equally successful in the CAF Champions League.

The 2015 qualifying rounds draw made in Cairo paired the Soweto club with Batwanans Township Rollers in a preliminary two-leg tie they should win with several goals to spare.

But assuming Chiefs clear the first obstacle in the premier annual African club football competition, Moroccans Raja Casablanca and title-holders Algerians Entente Setif loom large on the horizon.

Three-time CAF Champions League winners Raja will be favoured to defeat Congolese Diables Noirs in another preliminary match-up, with the first legs scheduled for mid-February.

Should the Amakhosi (Chiefs) survive 2013 Club World Cup runners-up Raja, they are likely to tackle two-time African champions Setif for a place in the lucrative group stage.

Setif, who edged V Club from the Democratic Republic of Congo on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate deadlock to win the 2014 final, have a preliminary bye.

The Algerians, a disappointing fifth at the Club World Cup in Morocco last week, confront Gambians Real Banjul or Liberians Barrack Young Controllers in a last-32 tie.

Chiefs, who hold a 15-point Premiership lead with 12 rounds left, failed to reach the group stage in three previous attempts, losing narrowly to V Club this year.

Mamelodi Sundowns, the other South African challengers, were equally unlucky in the draw as four-time CAF champions Congolese TP Mazembe await if the Pretoria club overcome Seychellois Saint Michel United.

The top 12 ranked countries are allowed two entries and South Africa are back among the elite after a four-year absence thanks to Orlando Pirates finishing 2013 Champions League runners-up.

Nigerian teams Kano Pillars and two-time Champions League winners Enyimba got favourable preliminary pairings as they seek to atone for poor showings this year.

Kano begin with an away game against South Sudanese Al-Malakia while Enyimba, the only Nigerian club to win the competition, host Beninese Buffles Borgou in the first leg.

Pillars fell to V Club in a 2014 preliminary match-up and Enyimba suffered a shock last-32 exit against Malians Real Bamako.

The elevation of South Africa to two-entrant status meant Ghana

dropped out of the top 12, leaving two-time African champions Asante Kotoko as the lone flag-bearer.

Kotoko face Sierra Leoneans East End Lions and will wear the tag of favourites anxiously having being stunned by Young Controllers at the same stage this year.

Kenyans Gor Mahia, victims of an eight-goal last-32 thrashing from Tunisians Esperance this season, were paired with Malagasy outfit CNaPS Sport, and Congolese AC Leopards await the winners.

Having broken the Young Africans-Simba title dominance in Tanzania, ice cream company club Azam face a tough Champions League baptism against vastly experienced CAF campaigners Sudanese El-Merrikh.

Egyptians Al-Ahly, winners of a record 19 CAF titles after lifting the 2014 Confederation Cup, are among seven clubs who received Champions League preliminary-round byes.

Powerful Confederation Cup contenders V Club, Tunisians Club Africain and Etoile Sahel and Egyptians Zamalek were among nine sides to get byes in the second-tier competition. – Sapa-AFP

Chelsea move three points clear

Chelsea restored their three-point Premier League lead heading into a busy Christmas programme after a 2-0 win at Stoke City.

|||

London - John Terry's early header and Cesc Fabregas's second-half strike restored Chelsea's three-point Premier League lead heading into a busy Christmas programme after a 2-0 win at Stoke City.

Chelsea were ahead inside two minutes at the Britannia Stadium when Terry met a Fabregas corner with a powerful downward header.

Stoke pushed forward after the break without ever causing fit-again Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois many problems and Fabregas sealed victory with a scuffed finish 12 minutes from time.

“These victories mean more than three points, to win and get three points the players need the right spirit and mentality, to win here they must be a really very good team with the capacity to adapt to Stoke's style of play,” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho told the BBC.

Chelsea, who host West Ham United on Friday, have 42 points from 17 games with Manchester City, who visit West Brom the same day, on 39 and Manchester United on 32.

“Now we have to focus on the three matches we still have until the end of this period,” Mourinho said of the clash with Sam Allardyce's West Ham, the trip to Southampton on Sunday and another London derby with Tottenham on New Year's Day.

“Playing against Big Sam is a hard job for us, we have to cope with it. The three point lead we have is a little advantage, it is a little pillow we have to protect us - we go home happy and pleased with what we did.”

Stoke beat Chelsea in this fixture last season but the hosts were always up against it after Terry timed his run to perfection and beat Asmir Begovic with a powerful header for his first league goal in over a year.

Mark Hughes's side tried to harry and hustle Chelsea but the superior class of the leaders always shone through.

Courtois, back after a muscular injury, was rarely troubled although the Belgian needed to produce a fine save midway through the first half from Steven N'Zonzi's deflected strike.

Top scorer Diego Costa should have increased Chelsea's lead when Stoke tried and failed to catch him offside, the Spaniard timing his run perfectly - only to the skew his shot wide.

Fabregas might have been awarded a penalty when he appeared to be clipped by Ryan Shawcross soon after halftime but Stoke escaped.

Charlie Adam drilled wide from edge of box following neat approach play from Stoke but Chelsea soaked up the pressure and made the points safe when Eden Hazard, who needed lengthy treatment in stoppage time, fed Fabregas and the Spaniard beat Begovic. – Reuters

News sport : Cam Fowler's goal celebration fail (Video)

Scouts have compared Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler's skating to that of Scott Niedermayer, effortless and beautiful.

They might want to re-think that comparison after seeing Fowler's attempt at a celebration following his gorgeous dangle on a game-tying goal against the San Jose Sharks.

(Insert Price Is Right sad trombone sound here.)

Lucky for Fowler, this isn't Rock 'n Jock hockey, and there are no extra points added (or taken away) for post-score celebrations.

After the game, Fowler was remarked on his attempted fist-pump-lunge-move:

The Ducks went on to beat the Sharks in OT with a wicked snipe by Ryan Kesler.

News sport : Vince Carter turns back the clock, dunks on Rudy Gobert

Long before he morphed into a respected veteran reserve (against the odds), Memphis Grizzlies wing Vince Carter was the NBA's foremost dunker, both in the dunk contest and in games. A week wouldn't go by without Vinsanity posterizing an opponent, to the point where his official website could put together a "Top 100 Vince Carter Dunks" YouTube video and have plenty of material left on the cutting room floor. He earned the "Half Man Half Amazing" nickname.

Such moments are few and far between for the 37-year-old these days, but every so often VC comes through with a moment that recalls the exploits of his youth. That's exactly what happened in Monday night's home game against the Utah Jazz. Carter exploited some gaps in the Utah defense in transition and jammed on 7-2 center Rudy Gobert:

The dunk is notable not just for its quality but also the dunkee's country of origin. Gobert is French, just like former Knicks draftee and very famous VC victim Frederic Weis. This one doesn't really compare to full-on jumping over a guy, but perhaps Gobert acknowledged the historical connection. It's possible he even watched that Weis dunk as a youngster, dreaming of the day when he might be dunked on by the very same man.

Dunk aside, the Grizzlies weren't so terrific overall in this one, losing 97-91 to a markedly inferior team at home. Since beating the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs on successive nights last week, Memphis has lost three in a row to the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, and now the Jazz. They'll try to reverse their fortunes on Friday vs. the visiting Houston Rockets.

News sport : John Scott knocks out Tim Jackman with butt-end of stick, how many games? (Video)

John Scott is a hockey player for the San Jose Sharks. At least, that's what we're told. Jury is still out on if that is in fact true.

On Monday night, Scott and Anaheim's tough guy Tim Jackman came together at far side of the net as the play was whistled dead. From far away, it looks slightly innocuous as Jackman flays on the ice. When the moment is shown up close, Scott takes a look at Jackman before sending the butt-end of his stick right into Jackman's jaw.

Take a look...

Jackman stayed on the ice in the same position he landed on it in before starting to move his arms. A few minutes later, he was helped back to the bench. If it wasn't for the concussion protocol in the league, Jackman would have tried to get back on the ice right away to beat people up. It was announced at the beginning of the third that Jackman would not return to the game.

There was only one penalty as a result of the whole ordeal, and it was to Andrew Desjardins for goalie interference. None of the officials saw what took place between Jackman and Scott.

This was a pretty blatant intent to injure, and Scott will likely be hearing from the Department of Player Safety soon. It won't be his first run-in with the law. Actually, it won't even be his first hearing as a result of something he did while playing aginst the Ducks this season. In October, he was given a two-game ban for leaving the bench to fight ... wait for it ... Anaheim's Tim Jackman.
