News sport : LeBron James Jr. already has a must-watch highlight mix

The talents of LeBron James are pretty well established. The nearly 30-year-old four-time MVP has been blessed with elite natural abilities like strength and athleticism and has also developed a genius-level understanding of the sport. As with many incredibly successful people, it's sometimes difficult to differentiate between his inherited gifts and self-made qualities. He just has it all.

That nature vs. nurture debate doesn't seem to be any clearer in the case of LeBron James Jr., 10-year-old son of the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar. LeBron the Younger — also known as Bronny — earned attention in October when he sank a half-court shot at Cavs training camp, but it now appears that his basketball acumen extends well beyond trick shots. Just check out this highlight video of the fourth-grader in action (via Deadspin):

This video might only be very impressive if it were attached to some random 10-year-old — it's not as if LeBron Jr. is that much bigger than everyone else on the court or steamrolls everyone in some way that suggests he deserves to be playing high-school ball already. But it's a heck of a lot more interesting given his name and bloodlines, because you can catch glimpses of LeBron the Elder's game here and there. Bronny clearly has exceptional court vision (many cases), the ability to power through hard fouls to score (1:05), and a willingness to share the ball.

Of course, that latter quality could get him in trouble as he ages. True winners want to score instead of setting up inferior teammates. You'll never win a sixth-grade title that way!

News sport : Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong declares for NFL draft

Arizona State wide receiver Jaelen Strong (21) celebrates after scoring a touchdown during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Arizona, Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, in Tucson, Ariz. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri) Arizona State wide receiver Jaelen Strong will not return to school for his final season of eligibility. Instead, the redshirt junior announced through the university on Monday that he will enter the 2015 NFL draft.

Heading into Saturday’s Sun Bowl against Duke, Strong has 75 catches for 1,062 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Sun Devils this season, earning first-team All-Pac 12 honors. Last year, the 6-foot-3, 212-pound Strong caught 75 passes for 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns.

A native of Philadelphia, Strong transferred to Arizona State before the 2013 season after spending two years at Pierce College, a junior college in Los Angeles.

"Jaelen's enormous impact was felt from the first day he stepped on the practice field with us more than 16 months ago,” ASU head coach Todd Graham said in a statement. “His work ethic, attention to detail and overall football IQ are just a few of his attributes that make him such a special talent.

"It has been a great pleasure to watch him grow into the young man he has become - a leader off the field and a giver in his community. We look forward to one final game together and we wish him luck as he gets set to embark on the next chapter of his football career."

Strong’s 2,184 receiving yards ranks eighth in Arizona State history. He is projected by many draft experts to be a first-round pick.

“This has been one of the most difficult decisions of my life,” Strong said in a statement. “I’ve spoken to my family and we feel it is best for me to declare for the 2015 NFL Draft. First I would like to thank Coach Graham and the staff for believing in me from day one. I’d like to thank the Sun Devil Nation, the fans, and all of the people who work behind the scenes that I encounter everyday that have been like a family to me.

"Most importantly, I would like to thank my teammates, my brothers, for having my back through thick and thin. Finally, I’d like to thank Jean Boyd and his academic staff for their dedication to Sun Devil Football. My two years at Arizona State University have produced the best experiences of my life.”

News sport : Ugly brawl mars Memphis' 55-48 overtime win against BYU in Miami Beach Bowl

If the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl wanted to set the bar high for its future contests, it may have outdone itself.

The first bowl game for Miami Beach and the Marlins stadium went to double overtime before Memphis claimed a 55-48 win.

The win gave Memphis it’s first 10-win season since 1938. The program had combined to win 10 games during the past four seasons.

Unfortunately, the end of the game was marred by a bench-clearing brawl that included as much violence as the game had offense, still it was a contest for the ages and easily the best game of the early bowl season.

Memphis had a 38-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter and BYU looked all but out of it as it struggled to generate any consistent offense. The Tigers rallied from a 28-24 halftime deficit to take control of the game.

However, in the fourth quarter, three big mistakes by Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch and Memphis' special teams led to 17 points and BYU headed into the waning minutes of the game with a seven-point lead.

Lynch threw an interception early in the fourth quarter that BYU turned into a field goal. On the next possession, the Tigers fumbled the kickoff, which led to a disputed BYU touchdown that tied the game. BYU took the lead on a pick-6 with 7:48 remaining.

On the BYU score that tied the game, running back Paul Lasike not only appeared to be down at the 3-yard line, but he also didn’t appear to get in even after he launched himself toward the goal line.

The play was never reviewed and BYU took the score and the momentum.

However, Memphis composed itself late and Lynch found Keiwone Malone in the end zone with 45 seconds remaining.

BYU had a couple opportunities to win the game late in regulation, but missed on a desperation Hail Mary.

In overtime, Memphis’ defense held BYU to a 45-yard field goal and the Cougars had a similar defensive stand, which backed Memphis up for a 55-yard field goal attempt. Kick Jake Elliott, shanked his first attempt right, but BYU coach Bronco Mendehall called timeout. On his second try, Elliott nailed the 55-yarder right down the middle. It was struck so well, it would have been good from 65 yards.

On the first possession of the second overtime, Lynch found Roderick Proctor for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

On BYU’s possession, quarterback Christian Stewart threw an interception to end the game.

Lynch accounted for seven touchdowns, tying a bowl record set by West Virginia’s Geno Smith in the 2012 Orange Bowl.

As Memphis players were celebrating, many ran toward the BYU sideline, which didn’t sit well with the Cougars. Also, other small fights had broken out in the middle of the field between linemen that soon turned into scuffles with punches being thrown and players trying to stomp on each other. There was even a sucker punch by BYU’s Kai Nacua on Memphis’ Alan Cross, who was being held back by a Memphis coach. It took several minutes after the contest ended to break up the various melees.

Even though this was the end of the season for both teams, suspensions still can be handed out and leveled for the 2015 season. Many players were caught on video doing very bad things, so it’s fair to assume those returning players won’t be playing in their 2015 season openers.

News sport : Report: Colorado State 'closing in' on deal to hire Georgia OC Mike Bobo as coach

Aug 1, 2013; Athens, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mike Bobo shown during practice at the University of Georgia. (Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports) Colorado State is reportedly hiring another SEC offensive coordinator to be its head coach.

According to Terry Frei of the Denver Post, the Rams are “closing in on a deal” to name Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo their next head coach. Bobo would replace Jim McElwain, the former Alabama offensive coordinator who was hired by Florida last month after three seasons at CSU.

The 40-year-old Bobo was a quarterback at Georgia from 1993-1997 and coached at his alma mater for all but one year since. His one year away from UGA was spent as the quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville State in 2000. After that season, Bobo returned to Georgia in 2001 where he served as quarterbacks coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2006.

According to Frei, Bobo went through final interviews on Sunday and could be formally introduced on Tuesday if he and CSU come to an agreement on Monday.

Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost has been rumored to be a candidate for the position, but according to Frei, Frost was “unlikely to be sold on coming to CSU.”

After going 10-2 during the regular season under McElwain, the Rams lost 45-10 to Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday. After the game, offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin, who was serving as interim coach, told the media that he and the rest of CSU’s staff had been given termination papers.

News sport : Dirty stomp earns Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola a suspension

(USA Today Sports images) Had Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola thought a little more clearly and not stomped on an opponent Sunday, he'd be playing this week when the Lions go for their first division title since 1993.

But, he couldn't help himself. Raiola stomped on Chicago Bears defensive tackle Ego Ferguson's leg and earned a one-game suspension from the NFL, according to numerous reports. The Lions will be without one of their best players for a game against the Green Bay Packers that will decide the NFC North title.

Raiola tried arguing that he didn't mean to stomp on Ferguson, but that's pretty hard to believe when you see it.

"It was totally unintentional," Raiola said, according to ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein. "I remember I was stumbling out. I didn't see the end of it. I apologized at the end of the game, told him it was unintentional and we shook hands and that was it."

When asked about it, Ferguson said, "Y'all saw the play." And there wasn't much left for interpretation.

This isn't Raiola's first anger-related incident this year. He dove at a Patriots player's knees on the last play of a blowout loss, basically because he was mad the Patriots kept trying to score. That should give you some sense of his overall state of mind.

Raiola wasn't suspended for that first incident. But he's going to sit a game for this one, and it's really a blow to his team.

News sport : Johnny Manziel sounds ready to commit to being better in 2015

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel wouldn’t be the first NFL rookie to learn that to make it as a professional, it takes a little more effort than you’re used to.

Manziel isn’t the typical rookie in that he has already become the NFL’s next villain to many folks, but he’s going through the normal growing pains. He struggled in his first start. In his second start, on Sunday at the Carolina Panthers, he wasn’t off to a great start before he was knocked out of the game with a hamstring injury.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s story from the game, Manziel seems to realize that even though he was an all-time great college player, it’s going to take more dedication to replicate that success in the NFL. A taste of starting has seemingly motivated him, and the struggles have too.

"And that's what I want to do and that's what I want to be for this organization so for me, if anything, this has motivated me more to head into this offseason,'' Manziel said, according to the Plain Dealer. "We had a better team than we have had here in years past, and we need to capitalize on these guys that we have coming back next year and the talent that we do have on this roster that our coaching staff and our management has put on this team."

Manziel doesn’t exactly have the absolute support of the Browns going into 2015. After Manziel’s first start, coach Mike Pettine said, “He could hit it out of the park the next two and there'll still be doubts. He could not play very well the next two, there'd be a ton of doubts.” If saying that is a message to Manziel – who is known for enjoying the nightlife – that he needs to fully commit in the offseason to being a good starting quarterback, it might be working.

"So if anything it makes me more hungry to work in this offseason and get with these guys and stay on top of this stuff and come back next year and come out and try to have some success early in the season and sustain that through a season," Manziel said.

It's one thing to say that and an entirely different thing to back it up, but it's a good sign that he understands that a lot of work will be necessary if he wants to improve in 2015.

Manziel also said he thinks his teammates have seen over the last two weeks that “I want to be the guy.” The Browns don't seem totally sold. A 3-for-8, 32-yard day at Carolina before he was knocked out with a hamstring injury won’t help, and he’ll have a pretty light resume heading into the offseason if the injury knocks him out of Week 17. But maybe if his tough first couple games in the NFL have turned the light on and Manziel has learned he'll need to put in a lot of overtime at the facility to realize his potential, perhaps the Browns will gladly reconsider.

News sport : Tennessee walk-on tight end Alex Ellis surprised with scholarship (Video)

At the end of a team meeting, Tennessee head coach Butch Jones told his players that he’d be giving out a few gifts to players who had great showings during bowl practice.

The first player Jones called up, walk-on tight end Alex Ellis, received a gift all walk-ons dream of: a scholarship.

It was a very emotional moment for Ellis, who is in his fourth year with the program.

“I’ve been dreaming about this every day of my life,” Ellis said, fighting tears.

After not seeing the field during his first three seasons with the program, Ellis, a 6-foot-4, 238-pound redshirt junior from Del Mar, Del., appeared in all 12 games for the Volunteers this year and even made his first career start against Kentucky on Nov. 15.

Ellis registered six catches for 115 yards on the season, including a 31-yard touchdown on a fake field goal against Missouri on Nov. 22.

After going 6-6 this season, the Vols will play Iowa in the TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 2.

News sport : Western Kentucky and Central Michigan players swam with dolphins at Bahamas Bowl (Video)

A few days before the inaugural Bahamas Bowl on Christmas Eve, the players and coaches from Western Kentucky and Central Michigan got a chance to take in what the tropical paradise has to offer.

After taking in the sights, a few players from each team got in the water and got up close and personal with some dolphins. The players were admittedly nervous, but with the dolphin trainers close by, they quickly got more comfortable.

One player in particular, Central Michigan tight end Deon Butler, looks like he had a really good time with his new dolphin friend.

We already got a glimpse earlier this month of how excited the CMU players were to play in the Bahamas. This brings that all to fruition.

The game, played at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau – the capital city of the Bahamas – will kick off at noon on Wednesday. Both teams are 7-5.

Chiefs setting PSL alight

Kaizer Chiefs go into the end-of-year break with a 15 point advantage over their nearest rival, Mamelodi Sundowns.

|||

Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs go into the end-of-year break with a 15 point advantage over their nearest rival, Mamelodi Sundowns, at the top of the Premiership standings.

However, last season, Chiefs were also sitting pretty when Sundowns beat the odds to overcome the bookies' favourite and clinch the 2013/2014 league title in May.

Astonishingly, the Brazilians covered substantial ground to make up an 11 point deficit and ended a seven year league trophy drought, powering their way to the title with a game to spare after an 11-game winning streak.

The champions amassed 65 points in their campaign while Chiefs fell short, accumulating 63 points to finish runners-up.

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane tipped his team to accomplish bigger and better things in the season to come.

“Sundowns is a big club that needs to be at the top and we have managed to restore the pride. This is just the start. We are very ambitious and next season we will do our best to fight for our title,” said the elated Mosimane.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter, meanwhile, described last season's home-stretch implosion as an injustice to the fans and the club's rich history.

“In the back of our minds I think we thought we had the title wrapped up, waiting for us to lift the trophy. It showed some signs of immaturity and experience in the end to lose it when we were so far ahead, Baxter said.

“But credit must go to Sundowns after they pulled together a run of wins that proved our undoing.”

Amakhosi, however, have managed to turn the tables and have come back with a vengeance, surging to an unprecedented start by winning 15 consecutive matches across all competitions.

They remain unbeaten in the Premiership after 18 matches, having won 14 and drawn four. They won their first 12 matches before their streak was broken with a draw.

Baxter has assembled an ultra-offensive system that has allowed attacking players like Mandla Masango, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, George Lebese, George Maluleka and Siphiwe Tshabalala to break last season's shackles and flourish.

While Chiefs were determined not to repeat last season's disaster, Sundowns were finding it hard to replicate their devastating form. They have only mustered eight wins, seven draws and two losses from their 17 games as their new recruits have failed to click.

During the transfer window, Sundowns roped in players to strengthen the club and bolster their ambitions of making a mark in the Caf Champions League next year. Mosimane said he was willing to play second fiddle and pounce when the time was right.

“Once we get going we are hard to stop. We just need to get a run of positive results. Last season we were able to do it and this team has quality,” he said.

“Chiefs are doing well but we are just waiting for them to begin to drop points and that is where we have to capitalise.”

Level on points with Sundowns, though lying third with an inferior goal difference, Wits have kept Amakhosi on their toes, winning nine of their 18 matches.

Orlando Pirates were fourth-time lucky when they clinched the Nedbank Cup, after losing in three previous cup finals.

The Buccaneers powered to a 3-1 victory against Wits in the final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in May.

Prior to their triumph, Pirates had fallen short in the finals of the MTN8, the Telkom Knockout and the Caf Champions League in the space of four months during the 2013/2014 season.

On the heels of their winning streak to start the season, Chiefs' impressive run yielded cup success in the form of the MTN8

title when they overcame arch-rivals Pirates 1-0 in September.

Meanwhile, Platinum Stars failed to defend their Telkom Knockout title when they were knocked off their perch, suffering a 3-2 loss to SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium in November.

Former Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund guided SuperSport to success three months after taking over from Cavin Johnson, who was fired.

Matsatsantsa immediately took to Igesund's methods and coaching style with the Tshwane club having ended a near three year cup drought. – Sapa

News sport : Marshall QB Rakeem Cato to wear jersey number of injured teammate

Nov 15, 2014; Huntington, WV, USA; Marshall Thundering Herd quarterback Rakeem Cato (12) passes for a touchdown to receiver Deon-Tay McManus against the Rice Owls. (Rob Leifheit-USA TODAY Sports) In his final collegiate game, Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato will ditch his familiar No. 12 jersey.

Instead, according to the Herald-Dispatch, Cato will wear No. 31 when the Thundering Herd takes on Northern Illinois in Tuesday’s Boca Raton Bowl. He’ll wear the new number to honor a teammate, junior linebacker Evan McKelvey. McKelvey suffered an ACL injury on Oct. 4 against Old Dominion and several of his teammates have worn his No. 31 throughout the season. Cato will be the first offensive player to do so.

“We want Evan to know that we’re behind him for the whole season and support him, no matter what,” Cato said Saturday. “The defense has done a great job of wearing it all year. I just thought it was the perfect time for me to wear it.”

A teammate wore McKelvey’s number in every game since he went down except one – the team’s 67-66 overtime loss to Western Kentucky, Marshall’s only loss of the season. McKelvey said that it “means a lot” that his teammates wear his jersey number.

“The fact that Cato’s wearing it, that’s a big thing,” McKelvey said. “Why not in the bowl game, right? He’s a big-time player.”

Cato did not hesitate to give up his No. 12 for his final game, either.

“I know how much Evan McKelvey really loves the game of football and he’d kill to be on the field with us Tuesday,” Cato said.

Tuesday’s game kicks off at 6:00 p.m. ET at FAU Stadium.

News sport : Kobe Bryant has to stop

Mocking Kobe Bryant’s shot selection has acted as a gleeful exercise for NBA observers since the spring of 1997: Bryant’s rookie year, when the teenager was either charged with or decided to personally take several ill-advised jumpers down the stretch of Los Angeles’ Game 5 loss to the Utah Jazz in the Western Conference semis. Laker Elden Campbell missed 12 of 13 shots in that game, and Lakers not named “Kobe” were embarrassingly incompetent at defending the pick and roll, but Bryant’s airballs and 4-14 shooting mark were given the most blame.

In the years since, it’s been just fine to contain multitudes regarding Bryant: Kobe does take lots of terrible, inefficient shots; but he also makes quite a few of them and remains one of the greatest players of his generation.

This year, however, stands as less charming. The Lakers were never going to make the playoffs and Bryant is to be credited for his usage alone – it takes a special NBA athlete to be able to get off 22.4 shots per game at age 36. Sunday evening’s Laker loss to the Sacramento Kings, though, was downright embarrassing. And all because of Kobe.

With the Lakers up 13 points midway through the third quarter, Bryant decided to close out the Lakers/Kings contest in this fashion:

Each time we thought Bryant had topped himself with a terrible shot, he dug in deeper and continued to toss them up. Attempts that wouldn’t have been appropriate even in Bryant’s prime were served as his go-to moves, as this one-man flotilla completely shot the Lakers out of a game they eventually lost by seven.

Kobe finished with an 8-30 mark from the field, keeping his most ardent admirers happy with 25 points accrued from those 30 shots. Bryant turned the ball over nine times. His defense was Kobe Bryant-esque – two cool steals but plenty of blow-byes.

Following the contest, as you no doubt are already aware, Laker coach Byron Scott floated the idea that a fatigued Bryant should sit a contest or two in order to rest the legs that decided to shoot 30 times. From Yahoo Sports’ Marc J. Spears:

When asked if Bryant's offensive struggles were due to fatigue or being aggressive offensively, Scott said: "That's fatigue. I think that goes hand in hand. I'm going to think about it tonight and sit down with Kobe tomorrow and we'll talk about it. We'll come up with a solution and try to figure out the next few games and what we want to do."

Bryant responded:

"I don't have much of a choice if the body is feeling the way it's feeling right now," Bryant told Yahoo Sports. "You got to be smart. You got to make sure you get enough return on your investment. With the amount of work that I do and put into my body and to get my body ready, for it to be sore as it is right now, sometimes you do have to consider sitting down.”

If you’re a mindful Laker fan, this should be infuriating.

Kobe Bryant reminding us that one has “to be smart,” even as he’s taking some of the least intelligent shots available.

Byron Scott refusing to stand up to his former teammate and current buddy in the hopes of remaining Bryant’s ally, citing fatigue as the reason Kobe Bryant ran up and down the court for nearly 38 minutes while tossing up 30 shots. He’d have tossed up more had he not turned the ball over nine times.

Over the last fortnight, seven games, Kobe Bryant has averaged 22.5 shots per game – right in line with his season average. He’s shot 31.6 percent from the field over that spell, the work of a madman.

The Lakers stink, though, right? Kobe has to do this in order for this team to survive, correct?

We’re 27 games into the season. It’s time to start paying attention to stuff like this:

The idea that Bryant has to carry some imaginary load is ridiculous. The Lakers have proven they can be more than a competent (numbers-wise, quite good actually) offensive club when Bryant is off the floor.

The Lakers’ numbers with Bryant sitting might be pumped up because they’re sometimes working against second string reserves, but the Lakers are usually working with second stringers themselves during that scenario. Yes, Kobe’s situation stinks, but that doesn’t mean he needs to be jacking up a league-leading amount of shots per game mark while shooting 37 percent from the field. And don’t start on the idea that Kobe can play point guard – he’s working with a 1.4 assist to one turnover ratio this season.

One of those second-stringers, Nick Young, managed a quite efficient 26 points on 14 shots in the loss on Wednesday, without turning the ball over. When it came time to talk about resting Kobe, this is what he offered, via Sam Amick of USA Today:

"Hats off to (Bryant), still going out there every night and trying to do his best," Young began before offering his solution. "Just give me the ball, and that's what could happen. I'm always down to take over the load. Let me, let Wayne (Ellington) take a couple shots. But majority, just give me the ball."

"(Bryant) still goes out there at night and tries to give his best. We need Kobe out there, and he knows it. But he don't need to kill himself. That's what I'm here for."

Again, when Nick Young is acting as your voice of reason, it’s time to look in the mirror. That goes for Kobe, Byron Scott, and the entire Laker front office and ownership group.

The basketball cognoscenti had a lot of fun goofing on Bryant’s shot selection on Twitter on Sunday evening, but at some point, though, this stops being funny. Yes, some Laker fans can be annoying; and those fans certainly have decades of dynastic basketball to warm themselves with in light of a losing season. Sacramento Kings don’t want to hear Laker whining when the team is just four and a half years removed from its last (and second straight) NBA title, when the Kings have made it to the third round of the playoffs just once since moving to California.

Rest is not the answer, and rest is not what Kobe’s going to get. The Lakers (who signed Bryant to a two-year, $48.5 million deal to keep their fans happy) aren’t going to sit him in front of the home crowd on Tuesday against Golden State, and they’re certainly not going to sit him in a nationally-televised Christmas Day contest against the Chicago Bulls and upstart off guard Jimmy Butler on Christmas Day.

Kobe Bryant is 36. He may be a psychotic competitor and he may be working for a terrible team, but as one ages one is supposed to accrue intelligence as the years pile on. Bryant is working with the sort of shot selection that would get a player half his age pulled from an AAU or high school game.

This has to be the low point. Somebody needs to put a stop to this. It starts with the guy with the ball in his hands.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 19 Clint Bowyer

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Clint Bowyer

NASCAR Experience: Nine full seasons in the Sprint Cup Series including eight wins. 2008 Nationwide Series champion.

Most recent team: Michael Waltrip Racing

Most recent season finish: 19th

2014 accomplishments: Three was the luckiest number ... three times. Twice it happened at Talladega, where third place finishes were accomplished in the spring and the fall. The other was at Richmond in September, where 2013 was exorcised. Right? Right?

Most memorable moment: It didn't count for anything in the standings, but this flip at the Budweiser Duels before the Daytona 500. And during the Daytona 500, the engine in the car went to crap not long after the race resumed after a lengthy rain delay.

Strengths: Has wins at all types of tracks: short tracks, road courses, intermediate tracks and superspeedways. Proven championship contender.

2015 goals: Win a stinking race for the first time since 2012 and make the Chase. Continue to find new ways to utilize flamethrower.

FTM's Take: If you believe in the curse of finishing in second place in the Cup standings, you can excuse away Bowyer's 2013 as a cursed season. However, that doesn't explain 2014, though it's not too hard to figure out the simple explanation for his woes over the past year. As MWR went down to two cars, the organization wasn't as fast as it was in 2013 and 2012.

Bowyer needs the team to figure it out – if there was a better data-sharing agreement between MWR and Joe Gibbs Racing, he may be the biggest beneficiary. He's one of the better all-around drivers in the Cup Series and there's nothing wrong from a NASCAR PR standpoint of more Bowyer TV time. Dude's one of the most colorful drivers around.

Previous reviews: No. 20, Austin Dillon, No. 21 Paul Menard, No. 22 Brian Vickers, No. 23 Marcos Ambrose, No. 24 Martin Truex Jr., No. 25 Tony Stewart, No. 26 Casey Mears, No. 27 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 28, Danica Patrick, No. 29, Justin Allgaier, No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman

News sport : Ole Miss signee Chad Kelly arrested following alleged scuffle with police

Clemson quarterback Chad Kelly signals a play during the first half of the Tigers' NCAA college football spring game at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday, Apr. 12, 2014. Head coach Dabo Swinney announced Monday, April 14, that Kelly was dismissed from the team. (AP Photo/Anderson Independent-Mail, Mark Crammer) Less than a week after signing with Ole Miss, Chad Kelly is back in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Kelly, the former Clemson quarterback who won a junior college national championship at East Mississippi Community College this season, was arrested early Sunday morning in Buffalo and is facing an array of charges. According to the Buffalo News, Kelly’s charges include “third-degree assault, second-degree harassment, second-degree menacing, resisting arrest, fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.” All charges are misdemeanors or violations.

The charges came after the 20-year-old Kelly refused to leave a Buffalo, N.Y. bar at around 3:15 a.m. Kelly's friend was thrown out of the same bar earlier and "tried to re-enter," police said. According to a police report, Kelly fought with two bouncers and punched one in the face, and then told the bouncers, “I’m going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place.”

In response to that threat, Buffalo police pulled over a vehicle in which Kelly was a passenger. Kelly then fought with police.

Per the Buffalo News:

Kelly was forcibly removed from the vehicle, officers said. Police said Kelly kicked and tried to swing at officers as they removed him from the vehicle. They said he resisted getting into a patrol vehicle and struggled with staff at central booking.

Kelly was arraigned in Buffalo court and later released without bail on Sunday.

Kelly, the nephew of great Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, signed a scholarship to play at Ole Miss on Wednesday after a season at East Mississippi Community College. Kelly transferred to EMCC after being dismissed by Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney in April for “conduct detrimental to the program” and having a “pattern of behavior that is not consistent with the values of (Clemson’s) program.”

Kelly threw for 3,905 yards and 47 touchdowns at EMCC this season and was expected to compete for the starting role with the Rebels in 2015.

"We followed Chad throughout the year and we were very, very impressed with the job he did running the offense for East,” Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said last week. “Probably toward end of year, once I had some face-to-face conversations with him, he came to a couple games and then the official visit, and I did my home visit with he and his family after their championship game, and I was convinced he was the guy we wanted to go on.”

In response to the news, Freeze said on Sunday night that the program is "gathering facts on the matter."

News sport : Pau Gasol remains cultured, charitable, and adorable

When Chicago Bulls center Pau Gasol turned down more money to leave Los Angeles and join the Chicago Bulls last summer, you knew his motivations were multifold. It’s true that Los Angeles has its own rather Titanic-sized arts community, and it’s also true that these Bulls have championship potential when healthy, but it also felt like the veteran All-Star wanted a new sort of thing to do on his (suddenly chilly) nights off.

On Sunday evening, with the Bulls taking in a rare two day weekend respite in the middle of a long season, we learned what Pau was into.

And he brought a friend:

Yes, that’s Chicago native and stalwart respected Bulls backup Nazr Mohammed joining Pau Gasol in a production of ‘Anna Bolena’ at Chicago’s famed Lyric Opera.

All in all, a fine night out. Save for those that had to sit directly behind the two 7-footers.

Earlier in the week, to promote increased donations for Gasol’s favorite charities, Pau decided to sing a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” in order to raise funds for UNICEF. Take a look:

The man is a gem, and once again: I cannot be counted on to cover him as a basketball player objectively.

There is still time left to donate, in someone’s name and as a gift to many, to UNICEF before Christmas.
