Moyes a picture of frustration

Sociedad were left frustrated after a late Levante penalty denied them a first league away win this season.

|||

Barcelona – Real Sociedad were left frustrated after a late Levante penalty denied them a first league away win of the season on Saturday with their inability to hold on to the lead a further indication of the tough job facing coach David Moyes.

The former Everton and Manchester United manager had urged his players to become stronger mentally if they wanted to pick up a first away win since April and start moving up the table towards the European places.

The match was an uninspiring affair but Sociedad were on course for that victory through Sergio Canales’ strike at the start of the second half before fullback Carlos Martinez handled the ball inside the area in stoppage time.

When television cameras turned to Moyes on the touchline his face was a picture of controlled anger and after Andreas Ivanschitz converted the spot-kick, he became even redder.

The decision appeared slightly harsh as the handball appeared unintentional and Moyes complained to the referee following the final whistle, but Martinez was running a risk by having his hands raised when the ball came into the box.

“We deserved the victory and it is disappointing,” Moyes told reporters. “Perhaps our only error was not to have scored more goals having gone ahead.”

Sociedad were missing Carlos Vela, who is their only forward of real quality since the departure of Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid ahead of this season.

Alfred Finnbogason has arrived and did get a double as Real knocked lower league Real Oviedo out of the King’s Cup last Wednesday but his movement has generally been too laboured in attack.

Since Moyes arrived last month, Vela and Finnbogason had been the only goal scorers and it will be an area that the Scot will target in the January transfer window.

“We need to score more. We were without our top scorer (against Levante) and this obviously made it more difficult for us,” Moyes said.

“We have done well in terms of build-up play but been found lacking in the final third.”

Sociedad traditionally rely on homegrown talent and it will be difficult for them to attract proven quality with limited financial resources that would help them move up the table from 14th and towards Moyes’ goal of a place in Europe. – Reuters

Senzo death overshadows good year

Bafana Bafana has finished the year on a high despite the tragic death of skipper Senzo Meyiwa.

|||

Johannesburg – While the murder of national soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa overshadowed events on the field, Bafana Bafana finished on a high after starting the year at rock bottom.

The new era for the country’s national soccer teams began with a scathing attack by the Sports Minister but ended on a high as three teams qualified for continental tournaments next year.

This switch in fortunes began when Bafana kicked off their 2014

African Nations Championship (Chan) campaign – hosted in South Africa – with a convincing 3-1 win over Mozambique in the tournament’s opening game, before following it up with a 1-1 draw with Mali.

However, this was as far as they got, following a heavy 3-1 defeat to Nigeria which condemned South Africa to a third place finish in the group. The team failed to make it to the knockout stage and this prompted Minister Fikile Mbalula’s outburst – labelling Bafana Bafana “a bunch of losers” – at the team’s hotel the following day.

Mbabula changed his tune later in the year when the South African senior national team secured a place in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), hosted by Equatorial Guinea, in January.

Nevertheless, the after-effects of the Chan debacle were not over.

National coach at the time, Gordon Igesund, was dragged into a messy spat with the SA Football Association for allegedly asking his players to demand bigger bonuses. Although later cleared by Safa, Bafana’s poor display in the Chan tournament ultimately sealed the coach’s fate and, in July, Safa declined to renew his contract.

Subsequently, former national coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba – who at the time was guiding the under-20 national side – was named Igesund’s successor.

Mashaba had already shone in 2014, grabbing headlines with his achievement with the under-20 national side (Amajita) – including steering them to African Youth Championships qualification. This international showdown is set for Senegal in March where South Africa will need to reach the semi-finals to qualify for the world cup in New Zealand later in year.

The under-17 national team (Amajimbos) are also set for an exciting 2015, having qualified this year for the upcoming African Championships in Niger.

This achievement, under the guidance of coach Molefi Ntseki, ended a 7-year qualification drought for the continental event.

Meanwhile, only a month after taking up his new position, Mashaba’s first task with Bafana Bafana was to guide them in their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualification campaign.

South Africa had already been dealt a tricky hand when, in April, Nigeria, Congo-Brazzaville and Sudan were drawn alongside them in group A of the Afcon qualification campaign.

However, in September, a new-look South Africa, under the leadership of Mashaba and his assistants Thabo Senong and Owen Da Gama, travelled to Khartoum, where their first assignment was against an unpredictable Sudanese outfit.

Meyiwa was named skipper ahead of the game, in the absence of regular captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who was injured. A popular choice, Meyiwa wore the armband for the next three games before his untimely death.

A youthful crop of players walked away with a thrilling 3-0 win over Sudan to kick-off what was to become a hugely successful Afcon campaign, where South Africa went six games unbeaten and qualified top of their group.

After Sudan, South Africa returned home to face their hoodoo side and defending Afcon champions, Nigeria.

A number of wasted chances could have seen South Africa walk away with a victory, but Mashaba and his troops had to settle for a goalless draw in front of a packed Cape Town crowd of 45,000.

In October, a double-header against Congo-Brazzaville got off to a flyer in Pointe Noire, where South Africa bagged a stunning 2-0 win in testing conditions and on an artificial pitch.

The return leg did not go quite as well, as Congo held their hosts to a frustrating goalless draw in Polokwane in what was Meyiwa’s final game.

On October 26, the national captain was shot and killed by two intruders while he was visiting his singer and actress girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, at a home in Vosloorus.

The former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper’s death sent shockwaves around the world as players, teams and administrators as far as Spain came to learn about his tragic passing.

Meyiwa’s icon, Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas, took to social networking websites to send his condolences to the Meyiwa family, posting a picture on Instagram in which Meyiwa held a shirt Casillas had personally signed and given to his fellow shot-stopper in November 2013.

With the cloud of their former captain’s death still hanging over their heads, Bafana dedicated their final two qualifiers to their slain leader, while Safa embarked on a campaign to call for the destruction of illegal firearms in his honour.

South Africa booked their spot at next year’s Afcon with a game to spare. A 2-1 win over Sudan in Durban in November took Bafana to the top of their group, where they would remain despite a 2-2 draw with Nigeria in Uyo, in their final qualifier four days later.

In his first three months in charge, Mashaba had ensured the country’s participation in their first major tournament since 2008 and, in doing so, eliminated Nigeria who are now unable to defend the title they lifted in Joburg in 2013.

Meanwhile, Banyana Banyana’s Portia Modise secured her place in history when she became the first African player to score in international football.

Her achievement capped off a year of mixed fortunes for the women’s national team, which narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Amakhosi simply unstoppable

For a second successive match, the Chiefs owe victory to the efforts of Kingston Nkhatha.

|||

Even on one foot, Kingston Nkhatha delivers. For a second successive match, Amakhosi owed victory to the efforts of a striker their fans used to love to hate. Having scored and created another in the 2-1 midweek win over Free State Stars, the Zimbabwean defied an injury that should have seen him long get off the pitch to set up Mandla Masango’s winner.

Continuously hacked on his right Achilles tendon, two of which earned both Tshidiso Tukane and Collins Mbesuma yellow cards, Nkhatha was surprisingly kept on the field – his return for the second half a shock as he had hobbled off the pitch.

But Stuart Baxter’s persistence with the striker duly paid off on the hour mark as Nkhatha found space on the right to run on to a pass from Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

Clearly unfit, he incredibly summoned some energy to get to the ball and deliver a cross flash onto Masango’s head for the midfielder to slot past Jackson Mabokgwane.

It was Masango’s fourth goal against Amazayoni this season after he found the net in the first round 2-1 win in Mbombela as well as a brace in the two sides’ MTN8 clash.

The victory ensured Chiefs remained unbeaten this season having played 18 matches and thus go into the long break still top of the table and looking very good to reclaim the title they lost to Mamelodi Sundowns last season.

They had actually started the previous term in a similarly scintillating way only to implode towards the end – an implosion that was set on course by the selfsame Aces who came here and inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the Glamour Boys.

Not many expected Aces to repeat the dose here yesterday, Amazayoni’s fantastic record of having not lost an away game this season notwithstanding. Yet Clive Barker’s team could so easily have done so.

For, despite Chiefs’ dominance, it was the visitors who created the more clear-cut chances. As it was, there was a good argument for an Aces goal early in the first half when Aubrey Ngoma beat Brilliant Khuzwayo with a sweetly-struck shot that ricocheted off the inside of the upright.

Whether the ball bounced off over the line was not clear but both the referee and his assistant felt it had not.

Before that Tendai Ndoro was twice denied the opener when Khuzwayo dived to push his shot away off the upright and then had his attempt immediately thereafter headed off the line by Man-of-the-Match Erick Mathoho.

Former Chiefs striker Mbesuma also had a chance to score on the half-hour mark but failed to control the ball having rounded off the advancing Khuzwayo and thus allowed the home defence the chance to regroup.

Chiefs had a few half chances in the initial stanza but none were good enough to really trouble Mabokgwane who did well to clear a cross that looked destined for Nkhatha’s head at the stroke of half-time.

Ivan Bukenya had headed over on 43 minutes and late in the game, Masango fluffed an opportunity to complete a brace when he shot straight at the diving Mabokgwane.

In the end, though, it was Nkhatha the Amakhosi faithful were celebrating after the striker once again contributed directly to their team’s success. They are sure to be praying he is fully recovered when the season resumes in February.

Meanwhile, Free State Stars secured a priceless 3-1 victory in their bid to avoid Premier League relegation when they beat Platinum Stars at Bethlehem’s Goble Park yesterday.

Occupying second-bottom position in the log before this “battle of the Stars”, the three points gained from a dogged and relentless performance will enable Free State Stars to gain a measure of breathing space and vault over Platinum Stars in the Premier League’s danger zone going into the mid-season holiday break.

Elsewhere, Mamelodi Sundowns climbed to second place in the standings after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town in Atteridgeville.

The Brazilians were aggressive from the start, and Anthony Laffor took a thunderous shot from outside the area in the seventh minute, but Ajax goalkeeper Brandon Peterson got down low and stretched to his right to keep the ball out.

Laffor and Peterson both left the field with serious injuries later in the opening period, after they were involved in a nasty collision.

Downs found the breakthrough in the 25th minute when captain Alje Schut connected with a curling free-kick from Teko Modise and hit the back of the net with a well-placed header.

Throwing themselves forward for the first time in the match, the visitors made an impact 10 minutes after the interval and were immediately rewarded when Tashreeq Morris pounced on a loose ball after a corner and buried the equaliser.

Kuda Mahachi delivered a fine cross with six minutes left in relegation time, and Modise climbed high at the far post to bang in a header for the win.

An 86th minute header from Larry Cohen helped ease Moroka Swallows’ relegation worries and increase those of AmaZulu with a 2-1 victory at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, in Durban.

The hosts had lead through a Bongani Ndulula header after 11 minutes, but Siyabonga Nomvethe levelled less than two minutes after coming on at the start of the second half.

Cohen then completed the comeback to help the Birds climb from 15th to 11th and left Usuthu rooted to the bottom of the table in what was the final match of 2014 for both clubs.

They went ahead when Sifiso Hlanti delivered a cross from the left that was met sweetly by the head of Bongani Ndulula from eight yards out.

Swallows then snatched the late winner when Cohen rose to meet Dikgang Mabalane’s free-kick lifting the Birds out of the bottom two.

In the late matches, Orlando Pirates beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1, while Maritzburg suffered a 2-1 defeat at Polokwane City.

Bayern domination sparks boring debate

Bayern’s Bundesliga domination has sparked a debate over how to stop Germany’s top flight becoming boring.

|||

Berlin – Bayern Munich will start 2015 with a record 11-point lead in the Bundesliga, sparking debate over how to stop Germany’s top flight becoming boring.

Pep Guardiola’s Bayern have brushed off their domestic rivals with ease and are poised to become the first team to go through a Bundesliga campaign unbeaten on their way to what would be a third consecutive title.

They set more records in Friday’s 2-1 comeback win at Mainz having conceded just four goals since August and their points lead at the season’s halfway stage is also a league best.

They have dropped only six points from a possible 51 so far and post heavy wins in Germany’s top tier with monotonous regularity.

None of the chasing pack of Wolfsburg, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen or Schalke look realistically capable of closing the gap while last season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund are languishing in the relegation places.

Ex-Germany coach Berti Vogts sparked debate about how to loosen Bayern’s iron grip on the German title by suggesting they should receive less of the league’s television revenue.

Sky pay 628 million euros ($768m) to televise Bundesliga games in Germany and the cash is divided up on a percentage basis with the most going to the league winner.

“We have to get to the point where we subsidise the smaller clubs, by a redistribution of the television money, for example,” suggested Vogts.

But the mere suggestion left ex-Bayern midfielder and Germany international Paul Breitner fuming.

“We (Bayern) can’t do anything about the inability of the other clubs. And if we have to bleed now, so the money is redistributed, that’s just nonsense!” he snapped.

Bayern are one of the world’s richest clubs.

They recently paid off the loan on their Allianz Arena stadium decades ahead of schedule and posted a record 528.7 million euros turnover for the 2013/14 season, with a profit of 16.5 million euros.

German teams seem to play Bayern in more hope than expectation of claiming league points.

“Bayern Munich are in a different league, I think we can all agree on that,” said Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl after Bayern thrashed his team 4-0 at home.

And Hoffenheim coach Markus Gisdol reached the same conclusion before his side were duly dispatched 4-0 in Munich.

“Bayern will lose at home sooner or later, but when you lose four, five or six-nil in Munich, that’s normal,” he mused.

Having won the 2011 and 2012 German league titles, then finished runners-up to Bayern in the last two seasons, Dortmund now peer up at Guardiola’s Munich from near the foot of the table.

Having seen his top players playmaker Mario Goetze and striker Robert Lewandowski join Bayern in the last two seasons, Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp said any German football fan looking for a consistently successful team has only one choice.

“Anyone who just wants to be successful has only one avenue to go down: you have to be a Bayern fan,” said Klopp, tongue-in-cheek.

Klopp predicted the current league situation back in April 2013, two months before Guardiola’s arrival.

Just before Bayern beat Dortmund 2-1 in the 2013 Champions League final, the German media questioned whether the Bundesliga was following the Spanish league, where two clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, traditionally dominate.

But Klopp accurately predicted the Bundesliga would mirror Scotland, where Celtic have won the last three league titles after rivals Rangers dropped out of the top flight after the club’s liquidation in 2012.

“It’s nice that people put us in the same boat as Bayern,” said Klopp in April 2013, with Dortmund second in the table, but trailing Bayern by 20 points.

“But I think from the start of next season, we’ll see that the comparison to Spain doesn’t fit, it’s more like Scotland.”

Even the league’s top scorer, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Alexander Meier, expects the trophy for the most goals this season to eventually end up in Munich.

“I don’t look at the top-scorer table and I honestly think the trophy will go to someone from Bayern,” he said. – Sapa-AFP

News sport : Late touchdown lifts Bowling Green past South Alabama in Camellia Bowl

The sound of stunned silence was even noticeable during the television broadcast.

The nearly sold out crowd at the Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., most of whom were there to watch South Alabama play in its first-ever bowl game, had just seen the Jaguars take the lead late in the fourth quarter against Bowling Green only to give it right back on a 78-yard bomb that ultimately sealed the game.

Bowling Green, which led almost the entire game, escaped with a 33-28 win in the most exciting bowl game on the inaugural day of the 2014-15 bowl season.

With 1:20 remaining, South Alabama running back Terrance Timmons scampered three yards to give the Jaguars a 28-27 lead, its first lead of the game.

But the moment lasted all of two plays as Bowling Green quarterback James Knapke found receiver Roger Lewis on a 78-yard bomb down the middle of the field. Lewis broke one tackle before heading into the end zone.

South Alabama threw an interception and then ran into Bowling Green’s punter on the ensuing possession to end the game.

Knapke’s heroics weren’t exactly unforeseen.

Every time South Alabama tried to creep back into the game, Bowling Green seemingly had an answer. However, the expediency with which Bowling Green answered South Alabama’s lead-taking score was flabbergasting, especially since South Alabama had held the Bowling Green offense mostly in check in the fourth quarter.

Both of these teams limped into the bowl game with losing streaks. The Jaguars had lost four of their last five and Bowling Green had lost three straight. But the Falcons jumped on the Jaguars early and kept them at arm’s length most of the game.

Bowling Green finishes the season with eight wins, its third season of at least eight wins in the past four years, while South Alabama falls to 6-7.

Knapke, who threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns, was named the bowl’s MVP.

News sport : South Alabama coach Joey Jones gets kicked in the face by his own player (Video)

South Alabama coach Joey Jones.

As the Camellia Bowl between South Alabama and Bowling Green got close in the fourth quarter, things also turned unexpectedly bloody.

South Alabama coach Joey Jones was trying to stop tight end Ryan Onkaa, who was falling out of bounds. However, Onkaa did a partial somersault and kicked his coach in the face not once, but twice.

Jones emerged bleeding with what announcers speculated was a bloody nose. He was seen multiple times with a towel trying to clean the blood from his face.

But he never took a moment away from the sidelines and continued to coach even through medical attention.

That play alone — and the trading of touchdowns in a hectic fourth quarter — made the Camellia Bowl the best game of the opening day of bowls.

News sport : Colorado State's current staff given termination papers

Dave Baldwin’s chances of being hired as Colorado State’s next coach went out the window Saturday when the former offensive coordinator turned interim head coach told media he and the rest of the CSU staff had been handed termination papers.

“That’s the profession,” Baldwin said. “… You deal with it. Life is never fair, and you deal with it. We’re going to deal with it.”

Baldwin was one of several names in the mix for the Rams head coaching vacancy that was opened when Jim McElwain left for Florida. The termination papers don’t mean Baldwin or any other members of Colorado State’s staff can’t or won’t be hired to stay at Colorado State.

According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan, Colorado State could announce a hire as early as Monday. Several major assistants have been interviewed, including offensive coordinators Scott Frost of Oregon and Mike Bobo of Georgia and defensive coordinators Vance Bedford of Texas and Pat Narduzzi of Michigan State.

Baldwin did himself no favors Saturday by being outcoached in a 45-10 loss to Utah in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl. Still, his work as offensive coordinator made the Rams one of the most offensively prolific teams in the country this season and helped them to a 10-win campaign.

As for the players, they’re trying to stay away from the coaching rumor mill and are just anxious to learn whom they’re playing for next.

“That’s nothing for us to worry about,” receiver Rashard Higgins told the Coloradoan. “We’ll see whoever comes in. I’m pretty sure he’ll do a great job, because he’s got guys like me on the team.”

News sport : Air Force notches 10-win season with 38-24 Idaho Potato Bowl win

Quietly, Air Force capped one of the best seasons in program history following a 38-24 win against Western Michigan in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The win was the team’s first bowl win since 2010 and the first 10-win season for the Falcons since they won 12 in 1998.

Air Force took the lead in this game early in the second quarter and never relinquished it. The Falcons option offense gained chunks of yardage led by Shayne Davern, who had 12 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

The Air Force defense kept Western Michigan’s high-powered attack mostly in check. Running back Jarvion Franklin, who came into the game with nearly 1,500 yards, was bottled up and held to just 26 yards on 12 carries. It tied his second-lowest output of the year.

While the Western Michigan ground game was quiet, quarterback Zach Terrell did have some success in the air with star receiver Corey Davis, who eight catches for 176 yards and three touchdowns, including a 51-yard score late in the game.

Terrell, finished with 297 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Even in defeat, Western Michigan still won eight games, its best season since winning nine in 2008, and the majority of the Broncos best players will be back next season.

News sport : You miss DeSean Jackson now, Philadelphia Eagles?

DeSean Jackson is why teams give controversial players the benefit of the doubt.

The Philadelphia Eagles obviously had a reason for cutting Jackson this past offseason after not getting any legitimate offers on the trade market. It wasn't because Jackson couldn't play; it would be foolish to think it had anything to do with his production. Jackson had 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns last year. He was a great fit on the field.

But for whatever reason the Eagles decided they'd be better off without him. Well, no.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2M Week 16 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 17,475 teams paid]

Jackson torched the Eagles on Saturday night, catching four passes for 126 yards in a 27-24 win that likely ended Philadelphia's playoff hopes. In a dismal Washington Redskins season, Jackson has been fantastic. Despite playing with three different starting quarterbacks, he has 1,083 yards and is averaging an amazing 20.1 yards per catch. The Eagles could use a guy like that.

And Jackson could have taken the high road and said nothing about getting revenge on the team that cut him, but would you?

He mocked the Eagles as he ran into the locker room.

He also had some interesting comments, according to John Clark of CSN Philly. Jackson said that Eagles players told him during the game that they miss having him on the team. He also said the Eagles defense was "naive" against top receivers.

"Thats Philadelphia Eagles defense," Jackson said, according to Clark.

Ouch. If anyone deserved the moment to gloat, it was Jackson.

Jackson can't be thrilled about Washington's 4-11 season, but it had to feel good to play a big part in likely ending his former team's playoff hopes on Saturday. The Eagles will enter the offseason looking for answers for why their season collapsed after a 9-3 start. Maybe one of the reasons is they haven't had a dominant deep threat to make a big play when they need one.

News sport : Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen wears 'Christmas Vacation' themed sweater (Photo)

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen took a little time away from his Capital One Orange Bowl preparation to have a staff Christmas party.

A party, at which, he wore the greatest National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation-themed sweater ever.

Some of you might remember a segment on College GameDay earlier in the season where coaches read mean tweets about themselves. One of those tweets said, “Cousin Eddie (from Christmas Vacation) is a fictional version of Dan Mullen.”

Of course, Mullen responded with, “Merry Christmas, (expletive) full.”

And, as you already noticed, the line on Mullen’s sweater.

I really hope Mullen got this sweater just to troll the person on Twitter. That would just add to the lore.

Well played, Dan Mullen. Well played.

News sport : Philadelphia Eagles' playoff chances on life support after bad loss

This was Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez’s career in a nutshell.

For all the good he might do, we’ll always remember the bad.

Sanchez didn’t play poorly against the Washington Redskins on Saturday, and in fact he was in line to be the hero after bringing the Eagles back from a 10-point deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had the ball at the two-minute warning, and looked to get into field-goal range and win the game, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Instead, Sanchez was the goat in a 27-24 loss. Sanchez threw an interception to Washington cornerback Bashaud Breeland on a poorly thrown ball inside of the two-minute warning. On Washington’s next play, Cary Williams missed a tackle on Pierre Garcon, who gained 23 yards, and the Eagles also took a roughing-the-passer penalty on the play to put the Redskins into field position. A few more runs later – and the Eagles had no clue they should have let the Redskins score a touchdown, to at least give them some hope to score in the final minute and send the game to overtime – and the Redskins had the chip shot field goal to win the game and put the Eagles’ playoff chances on life support.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2M Week 16 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 17,475 teams paid]

With the Eagles loss, their third in a row after starting 9-3, the Dallas Cowboys can clinch the NFC East with a win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Detroit clinched a playoff spot with Philadelphia’s loss. The Packers and Seahawks each clinch a playoff spot with a win or tie on Sunday, thanks to the Eagles’ loss.

If all that happens, the Eagles are eliminated. And what a disappointment that will be in Philadelphia, with all of its expectations coming into the season.

The Eagles probably didn’t deserve to win, playing so poorly against a Redskins team that was 3-11. But Sanchez’s 374 yards and a great effort by tight end Zach Ertz, who had 15 catches for 115 yards (where has that been all season for Philadelphia’s offense?) put the Eagles in position to win. Sanchez’s interception turned that around. Two missed field goals by Eagles kicker Cody Parkey didn't help either.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III played fairly well for Washington. He completed 16-of-23 passes for 220 yards. He made some nice plays from the pocket and put his team in position to win. That’s a nice development for the Redskins, but the story of the day was that Washington probably ruined Philadelphia’s season on Saturday.

The Eagles are probably done after that loss. Even though Sanchez has played reasonably well at times replacing Nick Foles, nobody will remember the good plays. The only thing worth mentioning now is that this talented Eagles team’s season, which looked pretty promising three weeks ago, will likely be done in eight days.

News sport : Utah's offense comes alive in 45-10 thrashing of Colorado State

Utah quarterback Travis Wilson (7) runs for a touchdown against Colorado State during the first half of the Las Vegas Bowl NCAA college football game Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, in Las Vegas. (AP Photo/John Locher) For one game, Utah showed flashes of the team coach Kyle Whittingham hopes he has in the future.

The Utes defeated Colorado State 45-10 in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl, a surprising score considering the Utes offense had been pretty cold for most of the season.

But it scored a Las Vegas Bowl record 24 points in the first quarter and the defense, which has been steady all season, never gave Colorado State a chance to find rhythm and get back into the contest.

The 45 points were the most the Utes had scored in a game since scoring 59 against Fresno State on Sept. 6. They also scored 56 in the season opener against FCS opponent Idaho State.

Most of Utah offensive struggles stemmed from incinsistent quarterback play, but Travis Wilson was steady, especially while running the read option, something he hadn’t done a lot of because of past head injuries. But he accounted for 91 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns — more rushing touchdowns that he had the rest of the season combined — in his best rushing game of the season.

Overall, the Utah running game accounted for 359 of the Utes 548 total yards. That total yardage was the second-most Colorado State had allowed this season, second to Boise State’s 676 yards earlier in the year.

Offensively, the Rams were stymied. They amassed a season-low 278 total yards, including a season-low 12 rushing yards. The Utah defense, which had some bad statistics simply because it didn’t get much offensive support, gave CSU quarterback Garrett Grayson little time to throw and forced him into two turnovers, which the Utes ultimately turned into points.

Receiver Rashard Higgins, an All-American, did manage 109 yards, but he was held out of the end zone for only the third time this season.

The Rams only touchdown came off a trick play that saw receiver Charles Lovett throw a pass back to Grayson, who ran 39 yards for the score.

This wasn’t exactly the best audition for Colorado State interim head coach Dave Baldwin, who is in the running to replace Jim McElwain, who left to coach Florida. Colorado State didn’t play like it was mourning the loss of their head coach, but rather like a team that was outmatched and outcoached.

Still, the Rams finish the season with 10 wins, the most wins by Colorado State since 2002. Similarly, Utah finishes the year with nine wins, the most for the Utes since winning 10 in 2010.

News sport : Utah State beats UTEP 21-6 in New Mexico Bowl

If you missed Utah State's 21-6 win over UTEP in the New Mexico, we hate to break it to you, but you didn't miss much.

UTEP was overmatched, both on defense and on offense, and when Utah State went up 7-3 on a 48-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kent Myers, the Aggie lead was insurmountable.

Myers, Utah's fourth quarterback this season, wasn't incredibly effective as a passer, finishing 5-12 for 68 yards with 70 on the ground. But he didn't need to be, thanks to the strength of Utah State's defense. And because of that defense, Utah State now has its second 10-win season in program history, a remarkable feat given the quarterback stat listed above.

The Miners struggled both rushing the football and attempting to pass it. Running back Aaron Jones compiled 25 carries, but they went for 88 yards, less than four yards a carry, as he struggled to find space on the edges against Utah State's defense. Quarterback Jameill Showers had barely more than 100 yards until a final garbage-time drive and his end-game total of 126 included a scramble-and-chuck it 53-yard completion to Ian Hamilton in the first quarter.

The craziest play of the game didn't even count. Utah State's do-it-all receiver JoJo Natson let a punt bounce over his head and he sprinted back to retrieve it. He then turned upfield and found a couple of blocks and was only prevented from the end zone by a last-ditch tackle by UTEP punter Jay Mattox at the UTEP 5. However, there was a block in the back – and yes, it did help to spring Natson – and Utah State ended up way back in its own territory.

The game was 7-3 at halftime and Utah State made it 14-3 early in the third quarter on a Nick Vigil TD run. After UTEP pulled within 14-6 with three minutes to go, Utah State didn't simply run out the clock as Joe Hill tacked on a touchdown with 1:33 to go.

Utah State's first 10-win season came in 2012, when the Aggies went 11-2 and won the Potato Bowl. The year introduced USU QB Chuckie Keeton to college football fans and Keeton was expected to lead the Aggies in 2014 after suffering a knee injury in 2013. However, Keeton reinjured his left knee early in the season and the Aggies decided to sit him out for the rest of the year, starting the crazy conveyer belt of quarterbacks.

And it continued, albeit briefly, on Saturday. Myers took a vicious hit and fumbled in the second quarter and went to the locker room for a moment. In his absence, Utah State got the ball back and was forced to utilize WR Ronald Butler at QB, and in his first play from scrimmage, he ripped off a 61-yard run. As Butler got Utah State inside UTEP's 20-yard-line, Myers returned to the game and played the rest of the way.

News sport : Rayvonte Rice gives Illinois Braggin Rights with buzzer beater over Missouri

Missouri couldn't have done a better job defending in the final seconds of the anual Braggin Rights game against Illinois, but Illini senior Rayvonte Rice needed only a sliver of space to fire the game-winner.

Rice found himself with the ball near the top of the arc with time winding down.. He fired a step-back 3-pointer that found the nylon as time expired giving Illinois a 62-59 victory over the struggling Tigers in St. Louis. It was only the eighth time in the history of the series that both teams came into the game unranked.

It was a nice moment of Rice, who grew up in Champagne but first attended Drake before transferring back to his hometown school two years ago.

Rice and his teammates had lost three of their previous five outings, including setbacks against the only two ranked opponents Illinois has faced this season. But thanks to Rice's clutch shot, the Illini have won two straight to improve to 9-3 with only one nonconference game remaining before the start of Big Ten play. Rice led all scorers with 19 points.

Meanwhile, the Tigers now have a losing record at 5-6 with 10 days off for Christmas. Missouri has lost three of its past four and it has dropped all four games against teams from power five conferences.

News sport : Improbable comeback keeps Villanova undefeated

As Ryan Arcidiacono fumbled his dribble along the left sideline with less than 15 seconds remaining and Villanova trailing Syracuse by five, it was difficult to envision a scenario in which the Wildcats could come back to win.

What happened next defied imagination.

Seventh-ranked Villanova forced overtime against all odds and emerged with an 82-77 overtime victory that the Wildcats will talk about for years and the Orange will do their best to forget.

Arcidiacono regained his dribble and spotted a wide-open Josh Hart spotted up on the left wing. Hart buried a 3-pointer to trim the lead to two. Michael Gbinije couldn't find a teammate to inbound the ball to and threw it away trying to get it to Rakeem Christmas. And in the scramble for the ball, Arcidiacono recovered it and fed JayVaugh Pinkston for a layup that forced overtime.

Whatever hope Syracuse had of salvaging a win in overtime vanished quickly when the Orange fell behind. Eleven of Villanova's 13 points in overtime came at the foul line as the Wildcats improved to 11-0 and avenged a loss at the Carrier Dome last season to their former Big East rivals.

Villanova's comeback from a 15-point deficit further cemented that the Wildcats are one of the nation's better teams. They've now beaten Illinois, VCU, Michigan and Syracuse to take an unbeaten record into the start of Big East play next week.

The heroes of Saturday's comeback for Villanova were Pinkston, Hart and Darrun Hilliard, who combined for all but 13 of their team's points. Pinkston tallied 25 points and 10 rebounds against the taller, longer Syracuse interior defense, while Hilliard and Hart scorched the Orange for 23 and 21 points respectively.

Saturday's performance will be bittersweet for a Syracuse team that Jim Boeheim called out in a postgame press conference last weekend and challenged all week in practice. Gbinije and Christmas combined for 36 points and Kaleb Joseph tallied 10 assists to help the Orange score efficiently, but they were undone by committing 20 turnovers and surrendering 15 offensive rebounds.

Syracuse fans will also surely note that the free throw discrepancy didn't help. Christmas, Gbinije and Chris McCullough each fouled out as Villanova went to the foul line 32 times.

Moral victories won't help Syracuse in the long run because what the Orange really need are marquee wins. They fell to 6-4 this season, a far cry from last year's 25-0 start fueled by now departed stars Tyler Ennis, Jerami Grant and Rakeem Christmas.

A huge victory was within reach for Syracuse on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Orange, it slipped through their fingers.
