News sport : Greg Cosell's Look Ahead: Aaron Rodgers' off day

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a bit of an outlier.

Nobody throws the ball like him, with that compact delivery and velocity and great ball placement. He also has a random element to his game, although he isn’t really a runner. He plays on the edge of the offense’s structure, often making plays late in the down.

Once in a while, he’ll play on the wrong side of that edge. That’s what happened last week against the Buffalo Bills. He just didn’t have it.

I’m not taking anything away from Buffalo, because they have a good defense, but tactically they didn’t do anything where you said, "This is amazing, I’ve never seen that before." And while they have a good front four that gets bodies around the quarterback, they weren’t drilling Rodgers to the turf. They did a good job recognizing routes based on formation, but mostly it was a game in which Rodgers’ late-in-the-down tendencies just didn’t work.

It was immediately evident that Rodgers was having a bad day throwing the ball; he was glaringly inaccurate beginning in the first quarter. The plays where Rodgers moves and navigates n the pocket and makes a big throw late in the down didn’t happen in this game.

Both of Bills safety Bacarri Rambo’s interceptions were mistakes by Rodgers. On the first one, it was actually a busted coverage. The Bills showed “Cover 3” to cornerback Stephon Gilmore’s side, but “Cover 2” to cornerback Corey Graham’s side. Reading it as “Cover 3,” Rodgers looked to Randall Cobb on the “over” route, and his throw had to beat Rambo, the single high safety. It was just an inaccurate throw to the inside of Cobb that allowed Rambo to jump it. An accurate throw might have been a touchdown.

On the second interception, the Packers went to four receivers and Rodgers threw a slant to Jarrett Boykin. Rodgers hesitated on the initial throw, threw the slant late, and it was picked off as a result.

One thing also caught my eye and I wondered about it as I watched this game: The Bills dictated where Rodgers didn’t throw the ball. It reminded me of Week 1, when the Packers didn’t throw to Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman’s side, or when the Packers played the New England Patriots and Rodgers rarely threw at top two cornerbacks Darrelle Revis or Brandon Browner, picking on other matchups instead. In this game, the Bills played a deep safety over Cobb’s side often, and Rodgers didn’t target Cobb against that defense. Can other defenses dictate where Rodgers goes with the ball? The sample size from these examples is way too small to draw any conclusions, but it’s something worth monitoring.

Manning's strength

Peyton Manning dealt with a thigh injury and the flu last weekend, but he was still able to do something he does as well as any quarterback: exploit matchups in man-to-man coverage. That was the story of the Denver Broncos’ win over the San Diego Chargers.

The best example came on a 28-yard touchdown to Demaryius Thomas late in the third quarter. The Chargers ran “man free blitz” so Manning had Thomas against Brandon Flowers. He threw a back-shoulder throw and it turned into a touchdown.

The Broncos have played a much different offense in the last month, with far less shotgun formation and a lot less passing, but if the Cincinnati Bengals give Manning man-to-man matchups to exploit, he will do it.

Griffin progress, but still work to do

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III started last week against the Giants, and he showed some improvement overall. He was more comfortable, less frenetic in the pocket and coach Jay Gruden helped him tremendously with an emphasis on play action and bootleg action with defined either/or reads.

But there are still things Griffin needs to work on, as we saw. When it was third and long and the play-calling couldn’t control his reads as much, he struggled. The longer he stayed in the pocket, the less effective he was, and he still lacks refined pocket clarity.

Let’s take a look at an example. On a fourth and 2 early in the third quarter, the play design was a quick slant to tight end Jordan Reed, the “X iso” against safety Antrel Rolle. Griffin didn’t believe he had the throw initially because linebacker Jameel McClain filled the passing lane. Reed was wide open in the second window after McClain passed, but Griffin came off of Reed despite no pressure. He didn’t have a good sense of the concept against the man coverage.

It will be a work in progress for Griffin, and we’ll see what progress he makes against Philadelphia on Saturday.

Chiefs open up

The Kansas City Chiefs have famously not thrown much to receivers this season, but they did more of it last week, and Alex Smith made some nice throws. One came on a 37-yard gain to Dwayne Bowe in the third quarter, when Jason Avant ran a “9” route deep and Bowe ran a “6” route, or a deep dig, and Smith made an excellent throw.

Smith isn’t a great thrower, in part because he locks his front leg when he throws. Locked-leg throwers can’t get much velocity, their accuracy is up and down and they can’t drive the football. Smith won’t make mistakes though. But I think the Chiefs are going to have to open up the offense more, like they did against Oakland. I don’t think they can win a 13-10 type game at Pittsburgh; the Steelers offense is too potent. And if they make the playoffs, I’m not sure they can win there with a limited offense either.

News sport : Louisiana-Lafayette beats Nevada 16-3 to win fourth straight New Orleans Bowl

Dec 20, 2014; New Orleans, LA, USA; Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns quarterback Terrance Broadway (8) against the Nevada Wolf Pack during the second quarter of the New Orleans Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. (Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports) Louisiana-Lafayette’s offense got out to fast start and put up 10 points on its first two possessions. That was all ULL’s defense would need in a 16-3 win over Nevada.

The Ragin’ Cajuns held a Wolf Pack offense that averaged 413 yards and 31 points per game to just 214 yards and three points en route to a fourth straight New Orleans Bowl victory Saturday at the Superdome.

In his final game with the program, ULL senior quarterback Terrance Broadway completed 26-of-31 passes for 227 yards and a score while running backs Elijah McGuire and Alonzo Harris combined for 169 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Broadway completed his first 14 passes of the game and helped the Cajuns jump out to a 10-0 lead. ULL’s first drive was an effective mix of run and pass that culminated in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Broadway to C.J. Bates.

After forcing a Nevada three-and-out on the Wolf Pack’s first possession, ULL added on to its lead with a 46-yard field goal from Hunter Stover, the first of his three field goals on the day.

Nevada and senior quarterback Cody Fajardo (14/29, 124 yards passing; 49 yards rushing) looked to close the deficit in the second quarter, but a promising drive came to an end when freshman wide receiver Wyatt Demps fumbled deep in ULL territory.

Nevada’s next drive was another missed opportunity. A terrible ULL punt gave the Wolf Pack possession at the ULL 27-yard line. Four plays later, the Wolf Pack had a first-and-goal from the one-yard line, but a false start penalty pushed them back. Lafayette’s defense stiffened and the Wolf Pack settled for a 21-yard Brent Zuzo field goal, making it 10-3.

The second half was more of the same – a defensive struggle – and neither team scored in the third quarter.

ULL ate up the clock with its running game and Stover added field goals of 30 and 35 yards. Meanwhile, the Cajuns’ defense forced the Wolf Pack to turn it over on downs twice to seal the win.

The win sealed a fourth straight 9-4 season for Lafayette, all under the direction of head coach Mark Hudspeth. Upon accepting the job in 2011, Hudspeth took over a program that had just four winning seasons since 1990. Now he has four in a row.

The loss dropped Nevada to 7-6 on the season. The Wolf Pack have not won a bowl game since 2010 and the program has lost seven of its last eight postseason games.

News sport : Montrezl Harrell's ejection could lead to suspension but unlikely to cost him UK rivalry

Montrezl Harrell was well on his way to another dominant performance Saturday late in the first half at Western Kentucky before losing his temper in the skirmish for a loose ball and making a potentially costly mistake.

Harrell went to the floor trying to force a tie-up with WKU sophomore guard Brandon Price. While both players were vying for the ball, Hilltoppers’ freshman Avery Patterson grabbed at Harrell from above angering the junior All-American candidate.

Harrell stood and threw a punch at Patterson and inadvertently hit official Pat Adams in the chest with an elbow. Adams doubled over in pain as the combatants were separated.

The No. 4 Cardinals were leading 28-22 with 38.2 seconds remaining in the first half when the altercation occurred. Harrell had scored half of his team’s points to that point. After officials reviewed the play, Harrell was ejected for throwing a punch and WKU guard DJ Clayton was assessed a technical foul.

Western Kentucky coach Ray Harper and Louisville coach Rick Pitino exchanged words and were issued technical fouls during the discussion with officials after the replay review and tempers continued to flare throughout the game.

Harrell’s inability to control his emotions will undoubtedly cost him a one-game suspension Tuesday against Cal-State Northridge. It would be unusual for Harrell to receive more than a one-game suspension causing him to miss next Saturday’s rivalry game with No. 1 Kentucky, but the fact that Harrell put himself in position for that possibility to even be a concern was a mistake that can’t happen.

With Harrell out of the game, the Hilltoppers cut the lead to three in the second half, but Louisville sophomore guard Terry Rozier picked up the slack scoring 17 consecutive points for Louisville during one stretch. Rozier finished with 32 points.

Falcao salvages point for United

Radamel Falcao scored his second goal for Manchester United as they were held to a draw by 10-man Aston Villa.

|||

Manchester City beat Crystal Palace 3-0 on Saturday to move level with Premier League leaders Chelsea, while Radamel Falco earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

City were missing Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic due to injury, but they secured an eighth consecutive win in all competitions thanks to David Silva's second-half brace and a late Yaya Toure strike.

Victory left City level on 39 points with Chelsea, who remain top by virtue of a superior goal difference (+23 to +22) ahead of their trip to Stoke City on Monday.

“It was a very good win. A very good performance. I enjoyed the way the team worked the whole week -- to work in a different way without strikers,” said City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

“I did think December is a key month to be in the fight for the title, and if you want to be involved you must be very near the top of the table. I hope we continue playing like this.”

United spurned a chance to close on Chelsea after dropping points for the first time in seven matches at Villa, who had Gabriel Agbonlahor sent off in the 65th minute for a foul on former team-mate Ashley Young.

The draw ended United's run of six straight wins and left Louis van Gaal's side seven points off the pace in third place, while West Ham United, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur all closed on them.

At the Etihad Stadium, City started with James Milner as an auxiliary striker and after growing into the game, the champions went ahead four minutes into the second half.

From Fernandinho's pass, Pablo Zabaleta scuttled into the area before cutting the ball back for Silva, who beat Julian Speroni with the aid of a deflection off Scott Dann.

Silva claimed his second goal in the 61st minute, neatly steering home at the near post from Aleksandar Kolarov's left-wing centre.

James McArthur thought he had replied for Palace moments later when he headed Yannick Bolasie's cross past Hart, but although Fernandinho appeared to have played him onside, the assistant referee's flag went up.

Palace manager Neil Warnock called it “a disgraceful decision”.

Toure made the game safe for City in the 81st minute, collecting a square pass from Milner and slamming home left-footed at the near post.

Christian Benteke put Villa 1-0 up in the 18th minute at home against United by chesting down a deep free-kick, stepping inside Jonny Evans and curling a fine left-foot shot inside the left-hand post.

David de Gea produced a stunning save to tip a header from Benteke over the bar early in the second half, before Falcao met Young's cross with a powerful 53rd-minute header to claim his first goal since October.

United's record signing Angel di Maria made his return from a hamstring injury as a replacement for Robin van Persie, but despite Agbonlahor being shown a straight red card for catching Young, Villa held on.

Fourth-place West Ham are now just a point behind United after beating bottom club Leicester City 2-0 at Upton Park.

Andy Carroll seized on West Ham old boy Paul Konchesky's disastrous back-pass to put the hosts ahead in the 24th minute and Stewart Downing made it 2-0 in the 56th minute with an stunning 25-yard effort.

Southampton are two points further back after ending a five-game losing streak by beating Everton 3-0 thanks to a Romelu Lukaku own goal and second-half efforts from Graziano Pelle and Maya Yoshida.

Tottenham leapfrogged Arsenal, who host Liverpool on Sunday, by beating Burnley 2-1.

Ashley Barnes cancelled out Harry Kane's headed opener for Spurs with a blistering shot from 20 yards, but Erik Lamela gave the hosts victory with a swerving long-range effort 10 minutes before half-time.

Charlie Austin took his tally for the season to 11 goals with a hat-trick as Queens Park Rangers came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at home to West Bromwich Albion, who scored through Joleon Lescott and Silvestre Varela.

The win took QPR out of the relegation zone, but Hull City remain in the bottom three after Jonjo Shelvey's shot deflected in off Ki Sung-yueng to earn Swansea City a 1-0 victory at the KC Stadium.– AFP

Chiefs ends year unbeaten

Kaizer Chiefs preserved their unbeaten run in the Premiership with victory over Mpumalanga Black Aces.

|||

Johanneburg – Kaizer Chiefs ensured a merry Christmas after they preserved their unbeaten run in the Premiership with a 1-0 victory over Mpumalanga Black Aces at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

It was Amakhosi's 14th win of the season, with no losses and four draws.

Mandla Masango secured the result with a header in the 60th minute after an assist from Kingston Nkatha.

They were up against an Aces side that happened to be the last club to beat them in the league.

Aces' record stands at six losses, six draws and five wins.

The unbeaten Amakhosi came out strongly in the opening minutes with Bernard Parker on the back-end of a pass from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the fifth minute that he blasted over the post.

The industrious Kingston Nkatha kept the Aces defence preoccupied with his bulky physique and dominance on the ball.

With his strength the Zimbabwean striker bulldozed his way past defender Edwin Gyimah but passed the ball unwittingly to the opposition in the ninth minute.

With Aces holding back early-on, there remained a danger as in the 13th minute when winger Aubrey Ngoma and Ndoro combined well in the box to see the opportunity squandered with the Chiefs defence unwavering.

Tsepo Masilela was always looking to make runs for Chiefs into the opposition half in a effort to whip in crosses that would keep the backline on its toes.

A few minutes later Masango distributed the ball into the box to Nkatha, whose header flew over Aces goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane.

Chiefs were forced into a double save in the 19th minute when Aces striker Thandai Ndoro took two strikes that were saved by Brilliant Khuzwayo and Eric Mathoho.

Playing against his former team, Abia Nale made a dashing sprint directly at the Chiefs defence but had little support as the chance went unpunished.

Aces defender Tshidiso Tukane marshalled the troops against the Amakhosi reprisal with the likes of Masango, Tshabalala, Parker and Reneilwe Letsholonyane bombarding the opposition wall.

At the start of the second half, Masango unleashed a thunderbolt from long range that flew over the bar in the 49th minute.

Chiefs continued to press but the Aces defence was watertight as they denied them a sight on goal.

But on the hour mark Chiefs got their breakthrough with the opening goal with the header from Masango.

Aces striker Collins Mbesuma in the 65th minute held the ball up with exception and turned to blast the ball wide of the target.

Ndoro evaded defender Tefu Mashamaite on the edge of the box and laid-off to Ngoma with a pass that the wingback misdirected out of danger in the 70th minute.

Zamoxolo Ngalo powered past two tackles in the Chiefs defence to deliver a cross that went agonisingly over the diving head of Siboniso Gumede.

Chiefs held on to ensure that they have a happy new year as they sit comfortably atop the table without a challenge in sight. – Sapa

News sport : No NFL team moving to Los Angeles for 2015, report says

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (AP) Until we have some actual progress involving an NFL team moving to Los Angeles, maybe it's best to stop the breathless speculation about which teams will move there.

There won't be a team moving to Los Angeles in 2015. ESPN.com's Adam Schefter said commissioner Roger Goodell told the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams the three hottest candidates to move to L.A. if that ever happened that there will be no team in Los Angeles next season.

This news shouldn't surprise you, because the NFL has a clear strategy for Los Angeles. The league lets the market stay open (no team has been there since 1994), does nothing to discourage numerous reports which say that this is the year a team is coming to L.A. (there were reports this year that two teams might even come, which the NFL must have enjoyed tremendously) and then the NFL can use that negotiating power to get cities to publicly finance new stadiums.

This is what the league has done repeatedly for two decades. And it's working, so why change now?

If the NFL, which makes so much money despite not being in the Los Angeles market that it gave Goodell a bonus of more than $40 million in 2013 just to get rid of its cash, wanted to be in L.A. it would have been done years ago. Quit with any other discussion about that market and an NFL team. Again: If the incredibly profitable NFL thought it was important to have a team in Los Angeles, there would be a team in Los Angeles. Period. That's it. Anything that runs contrary to that statement is intellectually dishonest.

Maybe the NFL will finally change its agenda and put a team in Los Angeles one of these years, but nobody should be pretending it's a priority for the league. The Raiders don't even have a home yet for next year because their stadium lease is up, they might be playing their last game ever in Oakland this weekend, and already the NFL has ruled out them returning to L.A. If that doesn't tell you how little the NFL cares about getting a team in that market, nothing else will.

So next year, when there are more reports that an NFL team going to L.A is really, really, really going to happen this time, you might want to remember that the NFL doesn't care if it happens or not. Though, it does care that there are reports saying it might happen. It's probably better for the league if that market remains vacant, but we should all understand that by now.

News sport : Adidas put the wrong logo on a Wisconsin forward's warmups

When Wisconsin's Duje Dukan took a close look at the latest gear Adidas sent on Friday, the senior forward noitced the shoe-apparel giant had made a slight mistake.

Wisconsin's familiar colors and "W" were there, but someone had mistakenly stitched a Cincinnati Bearcats logo on the sleeve.

Of course Wisconsin's mascot is the Badgers, not the Bearcats, but Dukan can look on the bright side. Now he has a one-of-a-kind collector's item.

News sport : What happened to Miami in its 28-point loss to Eastern Kentucky?

The outcome of Friday night's game between Miami and Eastern Kentucky was certainly a major surprise.

The margin of victory was even more eye-popping.

The 18th-ranked Hurricanes suffered their most lopsided home loss since 1997 when the Colonels came into Coral Gables and rolled to a 72-44 rout. Eastern Kentucky outscored Miami 45-19 in the second half and limited the Hurricanes to 29.3 percent shooting for the game.

How could Miami lose by that many points at home against a Colonels team that entered with a 5-4 record, zero noteworthy wins and losses to East Tennessee State and Valparaiso? Well, it didn't help that star point guard Angel Rodriguez was ill entering the game, per ESPN's broadcast.

Rodriguez scored only one point on 0-for-6 shooting and had as many assists as turnovers. In Miami's two losses this season against Green Bay and Eastern Kentucky, Rodriguez has played his worst two games and has shot a combined 2 of 21 from the field.

The Hurricanes' lack of an interior game becomes even more glaring when Rodriguez isn't attacking off the dribble and creating chances for the big men. Starters Tonye Jekiri and Joe Thomas combined for four points and only one made basket against Eastern Kentucky.

Miami still might have stayed in the game with its defense in spite of its scoring woes, but Eastern Kentucky caught fire from behind the arc. The Colonels sank 14 of 26 threes, five from Timmy Knipp, four from Isaac McGlone and two impossibly deep ones from Corey Walden long after the game was already out of reach.

All those factors added up to a shocking score and a loss that will surely knock Miami out of the Top 25 when the new polls come out Monday.

The Hurricanes probably aren't as bad as they looked Friday night. But their two best wins came against a struggling Florida team and an Illinois team that has since lost twice more, so maybe it's a bit premature to call Miami a member of the ACC's upper echelon.

City draw level with Chelsea

David Silva came to the rescue of a strikerless Manchester City with two goals in a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace that drew them level on points with Chelsea.

|||

London - David Silva came to the rescue of a strikerless Manchester City with two goals in a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace that drew them level on points with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Silva eased an increasingly tense atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium when he broke the deadlock shortly after halftime and put an efficient victory to bed with his second goal shortly afterwards. Yaya Toure emphatically smashed home a late third.

The victory moved City level on 39 points with Chelsea, who face Stoke City on Monday, and added spice to a title race that only recently had looked to be a one-horse race.

Champions City, who lined up without a recognised centre forward, had trailed Chelsea by eight points in November, but have cranked into gear heading into the busy festive period, taking 22 points from a possible 24 in their last eight games.

Palace, who were resilient opponents until City took the lead and had what looked a good goal chalked off for offside when trailing 2-0, are one point above the relegation zone. – Reuters

London - Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has replaced Darren Fletcher as the club's vice-captain.

The 33-year-old Carrick, who joined United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, takes over as Wayne Rooney's deputy from Fletcher who was handed the role at the start of the season.

Scottish midfielder Fletcher has struggled for first-team opportunities, playing just 49 minutes since the end of August.

“I have three captains,” manager Louis van Gaal said. “You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three.

“He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure. He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch.”

Rodgers, Wenger in Anfield spotlight

Two managers for whom criticism has become an unwelcome bedfellow this season face off in the Premier League when Arsene Wenger's Arsenal tackle Brendan Rodgers's Liverpool at Anfield.

|||

London – Two managers for whom criticism has become an unwelcome bedfellow this season face off in the Premier League on Sunday when Arsene Wenger's Arsenal tackle Brendan Rodgers's Liverpool at Anfield.

Arsenal's confidence has been improved by back-to-back 4-1 wins over Galatasaray and Newcastle United, but it was only two weeks ago that Wenger was barracked by fans of his own club following a 3-2 loss at Stoke City.

Rodgers, meanwhile, is under real scrutiny for the first time in his Liverpool tenure following a return of just two wins from eight league matches.

Last weekend's chastening 3-0 defeat at Manchester United left last season's runners-up in 11th place, seven points below the Champions League places and a yawning 18 points behind leaders Chelsea.

The highs of last spring now seem a distant memory, but Wenger, who has been at the Arsenal helm for 18 years, believes it will only be a matter of time before Rodgers's side start climbing the table again.

“I've sympathy for every single manager in the Premier League. Everybody goes through periods where it goes a bit less well,” said the Frenchman, whose side began the weekend two points below the top four in sixth place.

“Our job is to survive crises. Part of the job, not all the job. When you want to make a long career, you cannot only win, unfortunately.”

Rodgers cut an unusually taciturn figure in his pre-game media briefing on Friday, according journalists only four and a half minutes of his time and responding to their questions curtly.

But the Northern Irishman did become animated when asked to discuss the form of Raheem Sterling, who scored twice as Liverpool beat Championship leaders Bournemouth 3-1 in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

With Daniel Sturridge injured and new signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert toiling, Sterling has started as a 'false nine' in Liverpool's last two games.

The 20-year-old squandered several excellent opportunities against United at Old Trafford, but Rodgers saw encouraging signs during the victory over Bournemouth.

“The kid has been fantastic wherever he's played this season. He was outstanding the other night (against Bournemouth),” Rodgers said.

“It's been incredible, the stick the kid has received, with people trying to criticise him and put the focus on to him. He's been outstanding for us and it was another great performance from him the other night in a difficult game.”

Asked if Sterling would reprise his role up front against Arsenal, Rodgers replied: “We'll see what's in the best interests of the team.”

Rodgers can draw solace from the fact that his team destroyed Arsenal 5-1 when Wenger's side last came to Anfield in February, plundering four goals in a devastating 20-minute spell at the start of the game.

But although Arsenal also fell to heavy defeats at Manchester City (6-3) and Chelsea (6-0) last season, Wenger believes that they are now a more solid prospect.

“We've won five of our last six games,” he said.

“Liverpool are always very strong at home and that's why we want to continue to be faithful to our philosophy and play our game, but as well be solid defensively.”

Arsenal trio Theo Walcott, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain (both groin) and Nacho Monreal (ankle) are due to undergo late fitness tests, but Aaron Ramsey is out with a hamstring problem. Calum Chambers returns from suspension.

Liverpool have doubts over centre-back Dejan Lovren, who was forced off against Bournemouth with a groin injury.

Midfielder Joe Allen is expected to return after missing the trip to Dean Court, but Balotelli is unavailable due to a Football Association suspension.

The Italian striker has been banned for one game for sharing a picture of video-game character Super Mario on Instagram that contained the words “jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew”. – Sapa-AFP

Serero can shine at Afcon 2015

The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations is the perfect stage for Thulani Serero to put to bed any doubt that he is South Africa’s best current footballer.

|||

The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) is the perfect stage for Thulani Serero to put to bed any doubt that he is South Africa’s best current footballer.

The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder has long been considered the country’s top overseas-based footballer, but his performances in a Bafana Bafana jersey have not always been convincing.

Now, when Bafana line up at the Afcon tournament in Equatorial Guinea next year, Serero has the perfect stage to exhibit the full range of his skill, creativity and influence.

South Africa are in a really tough group with Algeria, Ghana and Senegal – and they will certainly need the 24-year-old former Ajax Cape Town star to be at his best.

Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba this week named a provisional 34-man squad for the 2015 continental showpiece, with Serero, Dean Furman (Doncaster Rovers, England), Anele Ngcongca (Racing Genk, Belgium), Darren Keet (KV Kortrijk, Belgium), Andile Jali (KV Oostende, Belgium), Ayanda Patosi (Lokeren, Belgium) and Tokelo Rantie (Bournemouth, England) as the ovseas-based contingent.

On December 30, Mashaba will cut the squad down to the official 23-man party for Equatorial Guinea.

Such has been Serero’s importance to Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam that even their head coach Frank de Boer lamented the fact the he will be losing the services of the South African for the duration of Afcon.

“He brings a rhythm to the game and also an aggressiveness,” De Boer told the Dutch club’s official TV station.

“He wants to defend forward and that’s something we like. He is also strong on the ball in small spaces. We are very happy with him.

“It is unfortunate that he has to leave for Afcon because he is a very important link for us. We are definitely going to miss him.”

At the 1996 Afcon tournament, Mark Williams, Doctor Khumalo and Shaun Bartlett imprinted their names on the South African public with performances and goals that linger in the memory.

Subsequent to that, Benni McCarthy, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Sibusiso Zuma would go on to do the same.

In the spirit of such great names of the past, this is Serero’s time to shine.

And Mashaba has certainly made his intentions known. He is not interested in just making up the numbers. He wants Bafana to go all the way.

“We want to win the Cup,” said Mashaba.

“Often we go into these competitions and we only talk about making the next round or such like. We want to get to the final, that’s the aim.”

News sport : NBA look ahead: The Fantasy Five

This column will concentrate on borderline fantasy options who should get strong consideration to start/bench during the upcoming week based on schedules.

Shabazz Muhammad: Despite averaging 19.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 0.9 steals while hitting 53.0 percent of his shots from the floor over the past eight games, he’s owned in just 28 percent of Yahoo leagues, which needs to be rectified immediately. He may be playing a bit over his head, but after getting inserted into the starting lineup Friday, he produced a couple of threes and a career-high five assists. Muhammad has averaged 16.0 field goal attempts over the past five games (he came off the bench in four of them). To put this in perspective, that would rank No. 18 in the league this season, ahead of players like Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving and Dirk Nowitzki. Muhammad may eventually lose playing time when Kevin Martin returns, but he’s looking at a big increase in Usage Rate with Corey Brewer traded to Houston, so while Minnesota plays three games in Week nine, he’s well worth using (Muhammad has been the No. 26 player over the past week in which he played just three contests).

[Week 16 rankings: Quarterback | Running Back | Receiver | Tight End | Kicker | DST]

Robert Covington: He’s averaged 3.4 3pt over the past nine games, shooting 49.2 percent from downtown over that span. That’s obviously unsustainable, but Covington has been the No. 27 player over the past two weeks (and a top-80 player on the year) and yet is still owned in less than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues. Covington looks locked in as the 76ers’ new starting power forward, where he’s averaged 19.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.0 blocks and a whopping 4.3 3pt while shooting 89.5 percent from the line over four games. Philly plays just three games next week, but its third-highest PACE in the league helps offset that, so start Covington with confidence.

Matt Barnes: He got off to an extreme shooting slump to start the season but has picked it up of late and has averaged 14.0 points, 1.3 steals, 1.0 blocks and 2.3 3pt over the past four games, shooting 57.9 percent from the field over that span. Barnes is owned in just 35 percent of Yahoo leagues despite being a top-75 player over the past month. The Clippers play four games next week, so he looks like a nice start, although to be fair, all of his opponents in Week nine rank in the top-11 in Defensive Efficiency.

Trey Burke: The former top-10 pick is owned in 70 percent of Yahoo leagues (more than any player listed above here) despite being outside a top-150 player this season. In fact, over the past two weeks, he’s been the No. 239 ranked player, thanks mostly to shooting 34.3 percent from the floor over the past eight games (34-of-99). Utah has the third-lowest PACE in the NBA and plays just two games in Week nine, making Burke an easy sit.

Josh Smith: I hate to continue to denigrate Smith, who’s shown improvement lately, as he was the No. 76 ranked player over the past week. But he still remains ranked No. 168 on the year while playing for a team that ranks below average in PACE and second worst in Offensive Efficiency behind only a 2-23 76ers team. Smith is owned in 87 percent of Yahoo leagues but he plays just two games next week, so strongly consider benching him. Smith’s shooting line this season is 39-25-46, which is just like Kevin Durant’s last year, only the opposite.

Pardew must avoid unwanted record

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has set his sights on avoiding an unwanted record in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

Newcastle, United Kingdom – Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has set his sights on avoiding an unwanted record in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on Sunday.

Pardew's side have been beaten by hated local rivals Sunderland in each of their last three meetings and no Newcastle boss has ever lost four derbies in a row.

Two seasons ago, Sunderland's manager Paolo Di Canio famously ruined an expensive suit by sliding along the touchline after Stephane Sessegnon scored their opening goal in a 3-0 win, while Gus Poyet was in charge of another 3-0 success for the Black Cats earlier this year.

Pardew, who also oversaw a 2-1 defeat last season, would dearly love to be the manager celebrating at St James' Park this weekend in a fixture he regards as one of the most heated in world football.

“I've been lucky enough to play in cup finals, but if any manager asked me, 'What's the biggest game you've been involved in', I'd say Newcastle v Sunderland,” Pardew said.

“The electricity of this game really is something else, and you have to be at it to appreciate it. I'm looking forward to experiencing that again, but not so much if you lose.

“Particularly around Christmas time when it's goodwill to all men, the gravy is going to be a bit lumpy if we lose, so it's important to win.”

While the odds on another 3-0 Sunderland victory on Sunday are 55-1, Poyet would settle for success by any scoreline after five draws and a defeat in Sunderland's last six league games.

Sunderland's problem, as so often this season, will be locating the firepower needed to unlock a Premier League defence, even Newcastle's which has conceded eight goals in their two games.

Adam Johnson, one Sunderland player who knows how to score at St James' Park after being on target in the last two Tyneside derbies, loves the occasion.

“I try to concentrate on it as I would for any other game, but you can always feel it's a little bit extra special on game day,” he said.

“For a lot of the fans, this is the only game that matters.”

Newcastle's former Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback scored an excellent goal for the Black Cats last season against the team he supported as a youngster.

However, Colback is now a Newcastle player and would love to make amends for last season's goal by scoring one against his old club.

The midfielder expects to be a target for abuse from Sunderland's travelling supporters, but Pardew believes he will cope with the situation.

“I have no worries about Jack Colback, I think he's handled himself impeccably since the transfer,” Pardew said.

“He conducted himself brilliantly after the criticism that came from Sunderland, and the way he's conducted himself in terms of his performances for us has been absolutely fabulous.

“I'm looking forward to seeing him in a Newcastle shirt on Sunday.”

Newcastle are in the top half of the Premier League after an excellent run of results in November that earned the Manager of the Month award for Pardew.

Yet, such is the hunger for success among Newcastle supporters, that he finds himself under pressure again after heavy defeats at Arsenal and Tottenham in the past week.

Much will depend on how 21-year-old goalkeeper Jak Alnwick performs after making a dreadful mistake for Tottenham's opening goal in the League Cup quarter-final defeat at White Hart Lane in midweek.

“I've seen many better goalies than Jak make a similar error and not get punished because there was a defender there,” Pardew said.

“Unfortunately for him it ended up in the back of the net, so there's pressure on him for that mistake and the fact that he's third choice here.

“He will deal with it. He's a strong enough character to do that.” – Sapa-AFP

Rodgers makes hasty briefing exit

Brendan Rodgers was in no mood to hang around as the under-pressure Liverpool manager made quick work of his weekly press conference.

London – Brendan Rodgers was in no mood to hang around as the under-pressure Liverpool manager made quick work of his weekly press conference.

Rodgers is usually expansive when facing his regular inquisition from the English media, but he provided only short responses to questions ahead of Arsenal's visit to Anfield on Sunday.

His briefing routinely lasts at least 15 minutes but Friday's session in the press room at the club's Melwood training ground took all of four and a half minutes.

Rodgers should have been in an upbeat mood after a morale-boosting League Cup quarter-final victory over Bournemouth in midweek.

But criticism of Liverpool and their manager has grown over the course of a disappointing season, which has seen them fall well off the pace in the Premier League title race and crash out of the Champions League in the group stage.

Rodgers is known to be unhappy about recent media coverage suggesting there is unrest in the dressing room and he was reluctant to provide anything other than cursory answers before a meeting with Arsenal that he desperately needs to win.

He did confirm Liverpool have accepted Mario Balotelli's one-match ban, imposed on Thursday for the Italian striker's controversial social media posting, that Brad Jones would continue in goal and that they missed out on Arsenal winger Alexis Sanchez in pre-season.

Balotelli indicated on Thursday evening his intention was to comply with the judgement of the independent panel and Rodgers admitted that was the course of action Liverpool were taking.

“We accept the ban so that's fairly clear,” he said.

Asked about potentially signing a replacement for out-of-form Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in the January transfer window and whether he had money to spend, Rodgers said: “There's no change. It's not something I'm thinking about at the moment.”

Rodgers faces the prospect of his former target Sanchez returning to haunt him at Anfield on Sunday.

He had hoped to secure the Chile international as part of the deal which took Luis Suarez to Barcelona, but when that was not possible he lost a straight fight with Arsenal, with the striker preferring London over Merseyside.

“All I know is that he's a world-class player. He was identified as someone who could come in and be perfect for us,” Rodgers said.

“He's a brilliant player with outstanding quality and even bigger work-rate. We know he will be a threat.” – Sapa-AFP
