News sport : Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd arrested for underage drinking

Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd was arrested shortly after the regular season ended for underage drinking.

Hurd and another male were arrested on Dec. 3 by University of Tennessee police. One was unconscious according to the police report, though it's unclear who was.

From the Tennesseean:

Hurd, 18, and Hunter Rivait, who is listed as a student in a university student directory, were arrested by citation on Dec. 3 after police spotted a car with its lights on in a university dorm parking garage. Police found an unconscious male inside.

The initial University of Tennessee police report does not identify the unconscious male, who was later transported to a hospital.

The case was referred to Knox County officials for prosecution, a University of Tennessee weekly crime log noted.

Both were charged with underage consumption of alcoholic beverages. While Rivalt entered his plea on Wednesday, Hurd is not scheduled to be booked until Jan. 20, long after Tennessee's bowl game against Iowa. Per the The Tennesseean, a UT football spokesperson didn't comment about any disciplinary action towards Hurd.

Hurd was Tennessee's leading rusher in 2014. He had 777 yards, nearly 400 more than Tennessee's second-leading rusher, and three touchdowns. He'll have competition for the posiition in 2014 after the Vols signed former four-star RB Alvin Kamara this week. Kamara played in 2014 at Hutchinson Community College.

News sport : WVU's Shannon Dawson reportedly set to become Kentucky's OC

Kentucky is hiring a Big 12 assistant for its offensive coordinator position.

According to multiple reports, the school is set to hire West Virginia's Shannon Dawson. Fox Sports first reported the news.

From the Louisville Courier-Journal:

An official announcement cannot be made until Friday, per state hiring regulations, but Dawson will carry on the "Air Raid" offense installed the last two seasons by Neal Brown, who left UK after this season to become head coach at Troy. The 37-year-old Dawson worked under former Cats coach Hal Mumme, the godfather of that pass-happy spread attack, at both Southeastern Louisiana in 2003-04 and New Mexico State in 2005

Per Fox Sports, Dawson, previously the offensive coordinator for the Mountaineers, is making the move to the SEC because of the opportunity to call plays. At West Virginia, head coach Dana Holgorsen calls plays. According to a source to the Courier-Journal, Dawson's familiarity with the offense was a significant plus as the school didn't want to change offensive terminology after Brown's departure. He'll continue to coach at West Virginia through the bowl game.

West Virginia's offense was No. 11 in total offense in FBS but severely hampered by turnovers. The Mountaineers averaged over 500 yards per game but committed 28 turnovers, which ranked No. 116. Kentucky was No. 75 in the country in yards per game and averaged about a half-yard less than West Virginia did per play.

Mumme is considered one of the coaching mentors of Washington State coach Mike Leach and Holgorsen was an assistant under Leach at Texas Tech for eight seasons before moving to Houston and Oklahoma State.

News sport : Listen: Bo Pelini's talk with his players on December 2

You can now listen to the (NSFW) remarks that Bo Pelini made to his players on the night of December 2.

Thanks to the Omaha World-Herald, which broke the news of Pelini's comments toward Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst in the meeting, you can in the player above.

Throughout his comments, Pelini called Eichorst names and said he was expecting his fate as Nebraska (former) coach. However, if you were expecting an unhinged Pelini similar to what you see sometimes on the sidelines during Nebraska games, you're going to be surprised. Throughout the 30 minutes, Pelini is composed, though his passion comes through. He also offers to take questions from his players, though he clearly had a lot of things to say.

While it's clear that the relationship between Pelini and Nebraska administration had soured to the point of no repair, he also serves as a good reminder to always know the ramifications of your decisions if you choose to nuke the bridges you've built after your tenure with an employer has ended.

Mashaba names provisional Afcon squad

Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba named a provisional 34-man squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

|||

Johannesburg – Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba named a provisional 34-man squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

Mashaba kept the bulk of the team that played in AFCON qualifiers where they went unbeaten in six matches.

He named four goalkeepers, 10 defenders, 15 midfielders and five strikers.

The squad will be trimmed down to 23 players on December 30, after a mini-training camp in Johannesburg from December 26 to 30 .

“The bulk of the boys in the squad are the ones who helped Bafana Bafana to be where it is now and we didn't want to change much going into Afcon,” Mashaba said in a statement.

“The bloated squad means we want to give everyone a chance as we don't have guaranteed places in the team. It is an opportunity for all of them to fight hard for the final spot.

“And for those not on the list, we can't say for sure they are completely out as they also stand a good chance of making it. As you can see most of those on the list have been with us for the last three months or so.”

Bafana's opening match of the tournament is against Algeria on January 19, followed by a clash against Senegal. The team plays its last group stage match against Ghana on the 27th.

Bafana Bafana squad:

Goalkeepers: Darren Keet, Jackson Mabokgwane, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Brilliant Khuzwayo.

Defenders: Siyabonga Nhlapho, Patrick Phungwayo, Anele Ngcongca, Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Kwandakwentsizwa Mngonyama, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Erick Mathoho, Rivaldo Coetzee, Thabo Matlaba, Mzikayise Mashaba.

Midfielders: Themba Zwane, Andile Jali, Asavele Mbekile, Vuyisile Wana, Jabulani Shongwe, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Bongani Zungu, Thamsanqa Sangweni, Dean Furman, Sibusiso Vilakazi, Oupa Manyisa, Mondli Cele, Mandla Masango, Thulani Serero, Thuso Phala.

Strikers: Ayanda Patosi, Bernard Parker, David Zulu, Tokelo Rantie, Bongani Ndulula. – Sapa

I play for Chiefs, not the fans

Kaizer Chiefs striker Kingston Nkhatha says he uses the jeering from supporters as motivation.

|||

Polokwane: “Don’t spoil it mate, don’t spoil it!” Stuart Baxter shouts to Kingston Nkhatha. But the Kaizer Chiefs coach need not have worried, for Nkhatha had it all covered.

Surrounded by media hounds armed with microphones, recorders and notebooks deep in the bowels of the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Nkhatha provided an interview so polished it could easily have been rehearsed.

Having just starred for Amakhosi in their 2-1 win over Free State Stars with a goal and an assist that duly earned him the Man-of-the-Match accolade, the Zimbabwean striker had every reason to rub it in.

But you knew from his goal celebrations that he’s not the type. Whereas many local players often run to the crowd with their hands to their ears as if to say “let’s hear you boo me now that I’ve scored”, Nkhatha simply ran to his teammates and later to the bench after scoring. And when he got ambushed by the media mob as he left the dressing-room en-route to the awaiting team bus, the Amakhosi No 8 was coolness personified – a far cry from the anxious player who had previously fluffed numerous chances on the pitch. “It’s not about silencing the boo boys,” he said “It’s about doing a good job for the team, not about me,” he said.

That he has endured a hard time from jeering fans repeatedly calling for his substitution given his tendency to miss easy scoring chances, seems to not have had any effect on Nkhatha. Instead, he says, the negative attention served to build him up: “People motivate you differently, maybe they were just trying to motivate me. But at the end of the day when I get on to the field I go there to play for Kaizer Chiefs, not for them (the fans).”

He was highly motivated on Tuesday night alright, dishing out an all-round flawless performance to help Amakhosi equal the record run of 17 unbeaten league matches set by Orlando Pirates. He opened the scoring with a deft back heel from inside the box before delivering the inch-perfect cross from which Siyabonga Nkosi scored the second.

Nkhatha said the key to his having survived the booing over time, especially in the Limpopo capital where it was pretty severe, has been by just focusing on his game. “I didn’t really bother myself about the booing. I just switched off and concentrated on playing.”

Baxter praised his entire team for the support they provided Nkhatha.

“You saw his reaction after the goal. He ran to his teammates and the camaraderie you saw there is what has pulled us through. Everybody supports each other and that has helped Kingston. None of his colleagues ever made him feel out,” the Chiefs coach explained, adding that he was grateful to the supporters’ behaviour on the night too. - Cape Times

'Slow' Pirates frustrates Tinkler

Caretaker coach Eric Tinkler urged Orlando Pirates to show purpose from the starting blocks.

|||

Johannesburg – After another late surge against Moroka Swallows, caretaker coach Eric Tinkler urged Orlando Pirates to show purpose from the starting blocks.

The Buccaneers came back from behind after a slow first-half to earn a point in the 1-1 draw against the Dube Birds during the Soweto derby at the Dobsonville Stadium.

“Once again we expect to start a game the same way we finish. In the second we need that same endeavour, the same fighting spirit and determination to get the three points,” Tinkler said.

“It was the same case of having a slow start in the first-half. We struggled against them because they had every player behind the ball.”

Swallows opened the scoring through veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe in the 35th minute, while Pirates replied with a Lehlohonolo Majoro strike in the 77th minute.

The Buccaneers battled to break the opposition defence in the opening stages. Swallows however took advantage of the Buccaneers lapse in defence and pounced on the counter with an opening goal.

“It was frustrating and we didn't know how to penetrate them. It was good that we were able to get back into the match.

“But we are disappointed that we weren’t able to go on to get the win.”

The Bafana Bafana legend highlighted the importance of stringing together positive results to keep up with other top-tier sides.

“First and foremost we need to stop conceding goals. We are very far behind from the top on points and we need to be collecting as many points as possible and draws aren’t helping us at all.”

Swallows coach Fani Madida praised his players for absorbing the pressure after stopping the second half onslaught.

He welcomed the shared spoils during the match of two halves where each team took turns to dominate the other.

“I believe it was a much deserved point. They were attacking us and we did well to prevent them from scoring because we could have lost in the end,” Madida said.

Pirates, who have collected 23 points, have fallen 20 points adrift of log leaders Kaizer Chiefs in the Premiership, while Swallows were treading dangerously near the relegation zone on 16 points.

In their last encounters before the Christmas break, Swallows face AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, while Pirates take on Bloemfontein Celtic at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday. – Sapa

Mirallas injury not too serious

Scans of Everton forward Kevin Mirallas's injured ankle have revealed no major damage and he could return to action in two weeks.

|||

Scans of Everton forward Kevin Mirallas's injured ankle have revealed no major damage and he could return to action in two weeks, manager Roberto Martinez revealed.

The Belgium international was stretchered off after being fouled by Jordon Mutch in the latter stages of Everton's 3-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on Monday, having previously scored.

But tests have shown that he has sustained only minor ligament damage, meaning the 27-year-old could play some part in Everton's festive fixture programme.

“We have great news as we were very worried after the game because it was an action where you feel the ankle is definitely damaged,” Martinez told his weekly press conference.

“The damage is the least it could be. It is an external ligament in his ankle and the way he is as a quick healer, I don't expect him to be out for too long.

“I wouldn't rule him out for any of the fixtures over the Christmas period.”

Martinez also hailed Scottish forward Steven Naismith, who has signed a three-year contract extension.

“I truly believe he is in the best moment of his career and he has a lot of years at that level in front of him,” said Martinez. “For him to extend his stay is incredibly good news for us.” _ AFP

Ozil set to return soon

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil said that “it won't be too much longer” before he returns from a knee injury in an interview published on the club website.

London – Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil said that “it won't be too much longer” before he returns from a knee injury in an interview published on the club website.

The Germany international, 26, has not played since suffering a partial rupture of the outer band of the left knee joint during his side's 2-0 loss at Chelsea on October 5.

Ozil was pictured walking out for training at Arsenal's Hertfordshire training centre last week and he says that he is on schedule for a return in early 2015.

“I am working every day to get myself fit and I am on the right path now. It won't be much too much longer before I am back on the pitch,” Ozil said.

“I hope to be back training with the whole team again as soon as possible.”

Rodgers encouraged by Liverpool display

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool are showing signs of reproducing their scintillating form of last season after victory against Bournemouth in the League Cup quarter-finals.

|||

Bournemouth, England - Liverpool are showing signs of reproducing their scintillating form of last season after a 3-1 win at Bournemouth in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, manager Brendan Rodgers said.

Having struggled to recapture the form that propelled them to second place in the Premier League last season, Rodgers' side set up a semi-final against league leaders Chelsea with an impressive performance.

Two goals from Raheem Sterling either side of a Lazar Markovic strike gave Liverpool victory against in-form Championship (second-tier) leaders Bournemouth.

It was an encouraging display for the Anfield boss, whose team have endured an early Champions League exit and are 11th in the league having accrued their lowest ever points tally in the Premier League after 16 games.

“We're starting to see signs of getting back to where we were,” Rodgers told a news conference.

“We know there is a way to go but this was a tough game coming here so for us to come and dominate like we did, and score the goals that we did, was very pleasing.”

Bournemouth came into the game on a 12-match unbeaten run and have exceeded all expectations this season, topping their league to become contenders for promotion to the Premier League.

The south-coast club knocked out West Bromwich Albion in the previous round and some had predicted a shock against a Liverpool side who were beaten 3-0 at bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

“It was an outstanding performance. Even though the result wasn't ideal at Old Trafford I'd seen moments in our game that was good and we created a lot of chances,” Rodgers said.

“I think slowly we're getting there. There are a lot of new players adapting. I'm looking to find solutions to make us more creative, because we haven't been that. I thought tonight was more like what we produced (last season).”

Liverpool, who last won the League Cup in 2012, are aiming to win the trophy for the ninth time and Rodgers is relishing the prospect of facing Chelsea, who have only been beaten once in all competitions this season.

“If you're going to win the tournament, and that is our objective, you have to beat the best teams,” he said.

“It's over two legs and we'll really relish that opportunity.” – Reuters

Garcia quits Fifa in protest

Fifa ethics investigator Michael Garcia resigned in protest at the way his report into allegations of corruption in awarding the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments.

|||

MARRAKECH, Morocco - Fifa ethics investigator Michael Garcia resigned in protest at the way his report into allegations of corruption in awarding the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments to Russia and Qatar was handled by the soccer governing body's ethics judge.

Former U.S. prosecutor Garcia said in a statement that he had lost confidence in the independence of the ethics committee's adjudicatory chamber after judge Hans-Joachim Eckert issued a 42-page statement in November based on the report.

The credibility of Zurich-based Fifa's ability to police itself has been questioned inside the sport and Garcia's comments appeared to deal another blow to the organization. It has been fending off corruption allegations since the Gulf state was awarded the 2022 tournament four years ago. Qatar has denied the allegations.

Garcia, whose report has not been made public, said it was “the lack of leadership” on ethics issues within Fifa “that leads me to conclude that my role in this process is at an end.

“No independent governance committee, investigator or arbitration panel can change the culture of an organization,” the statement issued through his Chicago-based law firm, Kirkland & Ellis, said. The firm said Garcia would not be available for interviews.

Uefa president Michel Platini, a member of Fifa's executive committee, said Garcia's resignation was a step backwards.

“Fifa's ethics committee was created to increase the transparency of the organisation, that's what we wanted, but in the end it has just caused more confusion for Fifa,” the former World Cup star for France said in a statement.

Fifa's Executive Committee is meeting this week in Marrakech, Morocco, which is hosting the Club World Club. The Exco is expected to debate a proposal from Germany's Theo Zwanziger to allow the publication of Garcia's report in full.

“It now appears that, at least for the foreseeable future, the Eckert Decision will stand as the final word on the 2018/2022 Fifa World Cup bidding process,” Garcia's statement said.

German judge Eckert's Nov. 13 statement concluded that there was not enough evidence to justify reopening the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments.

But Garcia said that, “The issues raised by Mr. Eckert's selection and omission of material from the Report, and his additional comments, went far beyond the initial transparency concerns.”

Garcia resigned a day after his appeal of Eckert's evaluation was ruled inadmissible by Fifa. Garcia said Eckert had misrepresented the report.

Allegations of bidding corruption made by two former employees of World Cup bids were examined by Garcia, but largely dismissed by Eckert.

One of those employees, Phaedra Almajid, a former official of Qatar's bid, said in an email that Garcia's resignation and the reasons he gave “are one more, emphatic exposure of Fifa's self-protecting corruption. Fifa has no ethics. Its rules are a farce.”

Fifa president Sepp Blatter said he was surprised by Garcia's decision to resign. “The work of the Ethics Committee will nonetheless continue and will be a central part of the discussions at the ExCo meeting in the next two days.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating allegations of corruption involving Fifa and affiliated organizations based in the Western Hemisphere.

Reuters reported last year that FBI investigators had persuaded Daryan Warner, a son of Jack Warner, a former Fifa vice-president, to be a cooperating witness.

Since at least the summer of 2011, the FBI has been examining more than $500,000 in payments made by the Caribbean Football Union to an offshore company headed by Chuck Blazer, formerly at top soccer official in the United States. Warner headed both the Caribbean group and the Western Hemisphere soccer body called Concacaf.

Last month, the New York Daily News reported that Blazer was also cooperating with the FBI and had covertly taped meetings with international soccer executives on the FBI's behalf. A person familiar with Blazer's activities confirmed the newspaper's story and said Blazer had also turned over paper and electronic records to U.S. investigators.

Blazer has not responded to requests for comment. Jack Warner was not available for comment.

Garcia said his report had “identified serious and wide-ranging issues with the bidding and selection process.”

Garcia also said Fifa's executive committee reported him to its disciplinary committee for publicly asking them to authorise publication of his report. The complaint was rejected, Garcia said.

Garcia, who was appointed in 2012 and spent 18 months investigating, said he felt that initially the ethics committee had made progress.

“For the first two years after my July 2012 appointment ... I felt that the Ethics Committee was making real progress in advancing ethics enforcement at Fifa,” he said. But he added: “In recent months, that changed.” – Reuters

Spurs hit back at AVB claims

Tottenham have hit back at Andre Villas-Boas after he claimed the Premier League club reneged on promises over transfers.

|||

London – Tottenham have hit back at Andre Villas-Boas by accusing their former manager of rewriting history after he claimed the Premier League club reneged on promises over transfers.

Villas-Boas was sacked by Spurs a year ago following a difficult 18 months at White Hart Lane.

The Portuguese coach has since taken charge at Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg, but the manner of his departure from Spurs still rankles, leading him to air his grievances in an interview with TVI.

The 37-year-old says Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy broke promises in relation to transfers both in and out of the north London club.

“The chairman proposed a challenge to increase Tottenham's competitive level, but immediately (Luka) Modric left and we didn't get any of the targets I had identified, such as Joao Moutinho, Willian, Oscar or Leandro Damiao,” Villas-Boas said.

“These were promises that were not kept. I had a group of players I had not chosen.

“In two years I lost (Rafael) van der Vaart, Modric, (Gareth) Bale, and all the promises made were unfulfilled.

“In any event I don't look at my time at Tottenham as a negative experience. It was an experience I needed to have.”

Those comments have not sat well with Tottenham, with the club swiftly slamming Villas-Boas' claims.

“It's unfortunate that Andre has felt the need to pass comments like these,” a Spurs spokesperson said.

“Not only has he attempted to rewrite history, he has clearly forgotten the facts.”

Villas-Boas' claim that Modric's move to Real Madrid came as a shock are understood to have irked Tottenham, as has the way he portrayed Van der Vaart's return to Hamburg.

The Portugese is believed to have been key in the Netherlands international's departure, while the club deemed many of his targets as unrealistic acquisitions. – Sapa-AFP

Sterling sends Reds into Legue Cup semis

Liverpool's Raheem Sterling netted a sharply-taken double in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth to set up a League Cup semi-final with Chelsea.

|||

London - Liverpool's Raheem Sterling netted a sharply-taken double in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth to set up a League Cup semi-final with Chelsea as Tottenham Hotspur strolled into the last four with a 4-0 rout of Newcastle United.

Sterling, who wasted chances in the 3-0 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday, looked a sharp-eyed goal-getter against second-tier opponents as he lifted the pressure on his manager Brendan Rodgers.

It was an even more comfortable evening for Tottenham Hotspur, who will face third-tier Sheffield United in a two-legged clash in January.

Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado were on target for Spurs against Newcastle who conceded four times for the second match in succession after losing 4-1 to Arsenal in north London on Saturday.

At Bournemouth, the hosts' hopes of an upset were scuppered by their own profligacy against eight-times winners Liverpool.

A glaring miss from Callum Wilson was punished on 20 minutes when Sterling headed the visitors ahead from close range.

Liverpool, who had won only two of 10 matches since they last played in the League Cup, seemed to have rediscovered their scoring touch when Lazar Markovic struck with his first goal for the club.

Sterling finished precisely six minutes after the break before Dan Gosling grabbed a consolation when his shot beat keeper Brad Jones, who should have done better.

Rodgers would have been forgiven for wanting to face anyone but league leaders Chelsea in the semi-finals.

“It didn't matter who we got in the draw, it was just important to get there - to win this competition you have to win games against big sides,” he told Sky Sports.

“I thought it was a brilliant performance from us tonight, it was always going to be a difficult job, but we controlled the game.”

Tottenham had lost their last two home clashes with Newcastle, but the threat of a third was eased when a blunder from visiting keeper Jak Alnwick presented Bentaleb with the chance to hook home from four metres.

Chadli doubled the lead with a measured effort from 25 metres, Kane netted with a scuffed finish and Soldado pounced on a loose ball.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino would have been relieved to avoid Premier League opponents in the last four.

“We have respect for Sheffield United - it is never easy,” he said. “We expect a tough game.” – Reuters

Wits battle past Aces

Thulani Hlatshwayo scored his third league goal of the season to help Wits record a hard-fought win over SuperSport United.

|||

Johannesburg – Thulani Hlatshwayo scored his third league goal of the season to help Wits claim a hard-fought 1-0 Premiership win over SuperSport United in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.

The Wits skipper climbed above his markers to net a late 74th minute goal from a corner for the hosts, who extended their unbeaten run to four games dating back 10 days.

Three points took Gavin Hunt's troops up to second in the standings with 30 points from their 17 outings, 13 points adrift of Kaizer Chiefs, at the top of the table, and two clear of Mamelodi Sundowns, who have a game in hand in third spot.

A tight affair at the Bidvest Stadium, the fixture lacked the killer instinct with both teams looking tentative going forward while remaining ever-cautious in defence.

The league winds down to a close next weekend.

With a third win in their last five league outings, Wits seem to have returned to their best under Hunt, who guided the Clever Boys to a third-place finish last season and is now looking to go one better.

The Clever Boys enjoyed the lion's share of first half possession, with Sibusiso Vilakazi and Henrico Botes causing plenty of headaches early on, but neither really troubled Ronwen Williams, who remained largely anonymous.

Williams was forced off minutes from the end of the opening half when he collided with former United winger Sameehg Doutie. In his place, young Dumisani Msibi, who last month completed his matric exams, came on for the second half, making his long-awaited debut for Gordon Igesund's side.

A similarly slow start to the second 45 followed, with neither team able to break down their opponent's defence.

However, 16 minutes from the end, Hlatshwayo stepped up, converting with a fine header towards the far post as Wits crept into the lead and looked good value from that point onwards.

For SuperSport it was a second defeat to Wits this season - this after Sthembiso Ngcobo did enough to score from the penalty spot in the pair's opening game of the season.

Igesund, in his 10th league game in charge of the Pretoria outfit, seems to have lost that winning feeling with his team, who have already lifted the Telkom Knockout this season but, nevertheless, look a far cry from a team able to keep up with the league's top four. – Sapa

Oldest Soweto derby ends in stalemate

A second half Lehlohonolo Majoro strike rescued a point for Orlando Pirates in their Premiership draw against Moroka Swallows.

|||

Johannesburg – A second half Lehlohonolo Majoro strike rescued a point for Orlando Pirates in their 1-1 Premiership draw against Moroka Swallows at the Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday night.

Veteran forward Siyabonga Nomvethe opened the scoring in the 35th minute to give Swallows the lead, while Majoro equalised in the 77th minute.

The encounter saw both teams take turns to dominate each half during the oldest Soweto derby.

Pirates tried to unlock the defence on the flanks with Sifiso Myeni, who posed some early danger with his burst of pace.

Myeni made a run into the box in the fifth minute but he passed the ball into no man’s land.

Minutes later, Pirates talisman Oupa Manyisa combined with Myeni in the centre of the pitch.

Their superb touches saw the Swallows defence retreating back, but the ball was then repossessed by Happy Jele.

With Pirates having deployed Kermit Erasmus and Majoro to lead the attack, it was all out warfare on the Swallows back-line.

In a surprising tactical ploy by coach Fani Madida, defender Ashraf Hendricks was utilised in the striker's position.

With his strength and dominance on the ball, the experienced Hendricks troubled the Pirates' defence and kept them on their toes.

Majoro received a nifty lay-off from Erasmus in the 11th minute inside the box but an accurately timed challenge from Rudi Isaacs eliminated the threat.

Swallows winger Dikgang Mabalane broke three challenges to whip-in a cross that sailed over the heads of the players in the box.

Pirates looked to capitalise on a rebound in the box from a set-piece as central defenders Siyabonga Sangweni and Rooi Mahamutsa posed some danger with their aerial prowess.

Sangweni missed a free-kick header when the ball flew inches over his head after an Issa Sarr delivery in the 23rd minute.

In the 30th minute, Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo was tested with a curling corner-kick that he handled with confidence.

Swallows striker Nomvethe was marked closely by Sangweni, who shielded him with authority from the ball when attempting to set-up a shot.

However, when the opening goal came, the veteran striker smartly pulled away from the defence to see his side-footer hit the back of the net after a Lucky Baloyi cross.

Rattled by the goal, the Buccaneers lost the ball far too easily to the opposition who held things tight at the back.

Pirates had the bulk of the possession in advanced positions but it was the Dube Birds who had showed more lethal instincts.

The ball possession in the early stages of the second half was dominated by the visitors as they went in search of the equaliser. The home side was pinned back in their own territory and were forced to absorb the pressure from the rampant Pirates.

Sensational Pirates midfielder Mpho Rakhale was the catalyst in the equaliser after splendid combination play with Erasmus and Majoro. – Sapa

Celtic gives Larsen winning start

Clinton Larsen started his second stint at Bloemfontein Celtic with a comfortable win over Mpumalanga Black Aces.

|||

Mbombela – Bloemfontein Celtic's new coach Clinton Larsen started his second era at the club with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Mbombela Stadium in the Absa Premiership match.

A brace by Frank Mhango in the second half gave the visitors the final points they needed – and Larsen, the perfect start at Celtic.

The match was Larsen's first since he took over from Ernst Middendorp -who had been fired by the club on Sunday following their goalless draw against Moroka Swallows.

The two sides came to this fixture without a win in their previous matches – Aces had played to a thrilling 2-2 draw against Free Stars at home, while Celtic had played to a goalless draw against Swallows.

Aces mentor Clive Barker injected Lehlohonolo Nonyane and Roger da Costa, at the expense of Mzuvukile Tom and S'boniso Gumede who had been part of the team that drew against Stars.

Larsen made only one team change from the team that played a goalless draw against Swallows when Striker Lerato Lamula came in for Dumisani Zuma.

Despite the changes, the two sides didn't have the best of starts in the first half. Tshidiso Tukane threatened earlier on in the 14th minute, but his shot went over the cross bar.

A moment later, Aubrey Ngoma had Aces' best chance: he did well to beat a number of defenders, and keeper Patrick Tignyemb, but failed to hit the net.

That was the closest both teams came to scoring in the first half and the match went to the interval still goalless.

Celtic came back in the second half with more energy and could have opened the scoring as early as the 51st minute.

Lerato Lamola had the first chance in the second half to break the dead lock, but his shot was saved by Energy Murambadoro.

However, it was not long before the dead lock was broken and Mhango scored after being teed up by Thapelo Morena in the 57th minute to give his side a well-deserved lead.

The home side started to push more bodies forward in search for the equaliser but could not break the Celtic defence.

As they continued to search for the equaliser, they were caught on the counter attack and Mhango completed his brace in the 89th minute to make sure of the points.

The win saw Celtic move to 10th on the log standings with 20 points from 16 matches, while Aces remained eight with 21 points from the same number of games. – Sapa
