News sport : Greg Cosell's Week 15 analysis: Johnny Manziel's first start revealed a lot

We learned a lot about Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel in his first NFL start. And we saw how much he has to work on.

Manziel showed some physical limitations and fundamental flaws against the Cincinnati Bengals. One thing that was immediately evident (and could be seen on detailed film study) is that Manziel has an average arm by NFL standards. Manziel needs functional space and a clean pocket to step up into throws and drive the ball. He works hard to put any velocity on his throws.

The problem is Manziel didn’t want to stay in the pocket. He lacks any feel for the pocket, has almost no pocket patience and discipline and is very quick to move and play what I call “random football” outside of the structure of the offense.

The Bengals used a “mush rush” concept a number of times with an inside rusher staying at the line of scrimmage to prevent Manziel from escaping vertically and making plays running the ball. And Manziel produced very little in the passing game.

Both of his interceptions were prime examples of his issues at this point.

His first interception came in the second quarter. The Browns had a post/cross route combination against the Bengals’ “Cover 3” zone. Josh Gordon’s post route lifted the front-side cornerback and the single-high safety, allowing Andrew Hawkins to be wide open on the crossing route. Manziel looked for a split second to his right, losing his downfield focus (Manziel didn't see things clearly; you could tell by his head, he didn’t have what you'd call a "calm helmet") and then drifted to his left. He threw the ball with no base or balance and the ball came out with nothing on it. It had poor location behind Hawkins too. Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick picked it off.

The second interception came on a third and 4. Gordon and Hawkins ran a mesh concept to get open immediately on a quick in-breaking route. Gordon broke open right away and Manziel looked right at him, but didn’t throw it. The second part of the route concept was tight end Jordan Cameron running a crossing route on the back side, over the top of Gordon and Hawkins. He was also wide open. Manziel didn’t register any of that, and with no pocket clarity he tried to make a random sandlot play. His ill-advised pass was picked off by Cincinnati's Adam Jones.

Manziel’s only rhythm throw from the pocket to the intermediate level came on a third and 12 in the third quarter. The Bengals ran a “Tampa 2” zone with two deep safeties, Gordon ran a “7 stop” route to the void, and Manziel hit him for a nice gain.

(NFL.com screen shot)

The Bengals mostly played zone coverage concepts, and were very basic with those zone concepts. They wanted Manziel to read the coverage and make throws into voids. On that throw to Gordon, he did. It was a good read and he executed it well. But that was rare for him in his first start.

Manziel is just a rookie, and he could learn to hit more throws like the one to Gordon in rhythm from the pocket. But he needs significant work on his footwork as he plants and sets. Too often he’s off balance and not ready to deliver the ball. He still has a tendency to lock his front leg on his delivery. That will prevent him from driving the ball.

Manziel isn’t ready to play with patience in the pocket. Can he get there with experience? Maybe. But he has a lot to overcome to be a high-level NFL quarterback. He’s a small quarterback with average arm strength and almost no pocket skills and discipline at this point.

News sport : Judge: No Patriots gear in Aaron Hernandez trial courthouse

(Getty Images) The judge presiding over the murder trial of former New England Patriots tight end has taken steps to ensure that the Bristol County (Mass.) courthouse will not resemble Gillette Stadium.

“No person wearing clothing, or a button or other object attached to clothing, or carrying an object that displays any Patriots or other NFL team logo, football-related insignia, or words and/or a photograph that relate in any way to this case will be permitted entry to the Fall River Justice Center during any phase of the trial,” wrote Judge E. Susan Garsh in a pretrial order.

The motivation behind the order is to preserve an atmosphere of decorum and safety for all participants. Garsh also laid out specific routines for family members, the general public, and the media to observe during the trial.

Hernandez is on trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd in June 2013 in North Attleborough, Mass. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty. He has also been charged with first-degree murder in an unrelated case in Boston. The specifics of that case will not be admissible in court for this trial, Garsh ruled recently, although texts between Hernandez and Lloyd will be.

News sport : Man sentenced for burglarizing home of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops

Nov 8, 2014; Norman, OK, USA; Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops reacts to a call in action against the Baylor Bears during the second half at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. (Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports) A year and a half after the home of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was burglarized, one of those responsible was sentenced to jail time on Monday.

According to the Norman Transcript, 22-year-old Corey McCarty and a male juvenile accomplice stole “cash, a phone, credit cards, keys and vehicle” from the Stoops family home in June 2013 while the family was sleeping. McCarty received a “10-year suspended sentence with nine months to serve in country jail” in Cleveland County (Okla.) district court. He was convicted on charges of first-degree burglary, larceny of an automobile and two counts of unauthorized use of a credit card.

Stoops and his wife Carol opted not to appear in court, but did issue a statement.

"Our lives changed forever after waking up to what was supposed to be like any other day,” the statement read in part. “We first noticed that the back door was ajar, then quickly saw that the bolts had been taken out of our gate, allowing it to manually swing open. We were asleep downstairs while our three children slept upstairs while the two men went through our house."

The two perpetrators were captured on surveillance video trying to use the credits cards. Additionally, the vehicle “was later located with the stolen keys.”

McCarty was detained several days later in Oklahoma City.

Per the Transcript:

While dispersing a party in Oklahoma City several days after the incident, police were told that McCarty and his friend discussed the incident at the party. McCarty was detained by Oklahoma City police and later transported to the Norman Police Department, where he was interviewed, the affidavit said.

During the interview, McCarty confessed to the crimes and was “apologetic,” the affidavit says.

In its statement, the Stoops family described the lost sense of security the incident has created.

"It is a crime to no longer feel safe in your own home as they stole our sense of security, peace and happiness in our home. Our lives would have been changed forever," the statement said. "We do not know if they had weapons, but for two people so bold to enter a home where they knew people were sleeping, it is a strong possibility.”

News sport : Evan Turner doesn't mind fans booing him, because 'Jesus was hated too'

This is an odd one.

Players have to answer to the media before and after every game, a responsibility they understandably sometimes dodge prior to a contest by ducking out of the locker room and into the trainer’s room to get “treatment.” This means these guys have to toss out quite a few words over the course of an 82-game season, often in the minutes following running up and down the court during a professional basketball game, while changing back into street clothes while strangers mill about with recorders and cameras.

That is to say, we understand why players could get weird with things, following a game.

Evan Turner, however, got super, super weird with things in the minutes following his return to Philadelphia on Monday night. Turner, who was a 76er from 2010 until last February, was booed upon checking into Monday night’s contest. The current Boston Celtic then made a strange comparison when Boston media asked him about his reaction to the Philly fans. From CSN Boston:

"I don't worry about it anymore. I don't want to sound super weird, but Jesus was hated too. At the end of the day, I just worry about the stuff that's important. If it makes you happy to boo me, go ahead. I'm still happy. I put all that stuff behind me."

Jesus Christ, if one believes that he did once walk the earth and is not a composite character, was indeed hated by many.

Evan Turner was booed by some basketball fans at an anonymous NBA game in December played between two teams with a combined 10-36 record.

The takeaway here? Don’t compare yourself to Jesus. If you can somehow turn water into wine without using grapes and a years-old fermentation process, perhaps we’ll talk. Until then, don’t compare yourself to Jesus.

Also, outside of sheer boredom, why in the world would you boo Evan Turner?

It’s understandable that 76ers fans are frustrated at yet another miserable Sixer season, the team has won just twice in 24 tries and you get the feeling that the team’s front office feels that that mark is two wins too high. The Celtics are a decades-old rival, of sorts, the game was close when Turner entered at the 4:14 mark of the first quarter, and Evan wasn’t really all that great for Philadelphia in his three and a half seasons there.

With that in place, it wasn’t Evan Turner that drafted Evan Turner second overall in the 2010 draft. Boo Doug Collins. Boo Rod Thorn. Boo the old guard that turned the Sixers into a middling outfit for too long during that era.

The 2010 NBA draft wasn’t an especially great one. John Wall (selected first overall) and DeMarcus Cousins (selected fifth) have turned into franchise cornerstones, but injuries (Wall) and attitude issues (Cousins) delayed that cornerstone-laying process for a few years. The most celebrated player in that year’s draft, Indiana’s Paul George, was a late bloomer that didn’t start to take in a significant amount of draft hype until the days leading up to his selection. Turner was chosen by numerous outlets as the NCAA’s player of the year following his junior season at Ohio State, and his frame and skill set seemed perfect for the NBA’s style of play.

His game hasn’t really translated, though. Turner isn’t exactly selfish, but he has to take a lot of shots to score his points, he’s not a big contributor in other areas outside of scoring (though his assists have spiked this season) and he’s not exactly a lockdown defender. He remains the sort of guy that looks like he could be a great NBA player, while falling well short of stardom.

Perhaps this is why the Sixers fans booed. Philadelphia fans are notorious for voicing their displeasure, so any bit of disappointment likely leads to this sort of thing.

And that led to Evan Turner passive/aggressively comparing himself to Jesus Christ.

It’s a long season.

News sport : H.S. basketball player hits two buzzer-beaters in same game

If the game's going down to the wire, you want Ryan Sturdivan on your team. The Woodland (Wash.) High School senior sunk a 45-foot shot at the buzzer to give his team the 49-47 win on Monday night. The win helped them stay undefeated, improving to 6-0 on the season.

Woodland had trailed by 9 just minutes earlier. He played down the rally-capping shot in a postgame interview with The Daily News.

“Please don’t make it sound like I did it all myself,” said the guard. “My teammates played great defense, they got me the ball in spots where I like to shoot... none of us gave up when it looked bad. All I did was make a lucky shot.”

Lucky, for most. But Sturdivan seems to have a rare talent for the shot. That was, after all, his second of the game.

He also hit a shot from behind the mid-court line as time ran out in the first half. That shot brought Woodland within one point of Kelso High School, as they went into the locker room trailing 19-18.

“I probably make those shots about two percent of the time,” Sturdivan said. “And that’s on a good day. You don’t really practice them, unless you’re playing ‘Horse,’ or think about them too much. If the ball winds up in your hands at the end of a close game, you just hope you can make one.”

He had 24 points in the game, the highest on the day.

While the final shot was spectacular, his coach added a bit of perspective after the game.

“If we’re in that position, we do want Ryan taking the shot,” coach Jason Buffum said. “You just don’t want to be in that position.”

News sport : Sprint to end NASCAR sponsorship after 2016

Sprint will not return as the primary of NASCAR's top series upon the conclusion of its current contract at the end of the 2016 season.

"We are proud of our association with NASCAR's top series but have made the decision not to extend our sponsorship beyond the next two years," Sprint vice president of marketing Steve Gaffney said in a statement. "As we look to the future, Sprint is focused on investing in maintaining a competitive edge and providing consumers with the best value in wireless.

The company's name had been on NASCAR's Cup Series since 2008 when Sprint and Nextel merged. Nextel took over from Winston as the tobacco company left after the 2003 season. When Nextel entered the series, NASCAR instituted the 10-race Chase format for the championship after crowning the season winner over a full season previously. Given the switch to the winner-take-all final race of the season in the 2014 Chase, it seems unlikely that a new sponsor would also mean a different title format. However, the Chase has been tweaked four times in 11 seasons.

“NASCAR and Sprint have enjoyed a long and productive partnership that has returned significant value to both parties," NASCAR chief communications officer Brett Jewkes said in a statement. "We understand significant changes within Sprint and the highly competitive business environment it is in has led to a decision not to extend its Cup Series entitlement position following the 2016 season. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is a very unique, premium sports marketing platform with strong momentum, so we are very confident of moving forward in 2017 with an outstanding new partner. In the meantime, we look forward to Sprint’s partnership on the best racing series in the world for the next two seasons.”

NASCAR recently found a new sponsor for the Nationwide Series in Comcast. The No. 2 series will be known as the Xfinity Series starting in 2015. Camping World took over the title sponsorship of the Truck Series in 2009.

In addition to the change in sponsorship, NASCAR has also seen a shift in its television coverage recently. ESPN and TNT concluded their agreements to broadcast Sprint Cup Series races at the end of 2014. For the next 10 years, Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series races will be split between Fox and NBC properties.

News sport : Proof that everyone loves fantasy football, even politicians

There was only one reason people were still watching late in the New Orleans Saints-Chicago Bears game on Monday night, and it wasn't the stellar level of play.

It's fantasy football playoffs time, and for two losing teams the Saints and Bears have a lot of guys who were on rosters. And as everyone knows, fantasy football is played by millions of people.

If you had Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery on Monday night and needed him to do something to win your semifinal playoff game, you weren't thrilled most of the night. He had a surprisingly quiet night, considering Brandon Marshall was out and he should have gotten plenty of targets. And in Utah, Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox was gripping.

See, I told you everyone plays fantasy football these days.

Ah, but the patience shown by Cox and many other degenerates who were on the edge of their seats for a 31-8 game was rewarded. In the garbage-est of all garbage-time scores, Jeffery hauled in a 7-yard touchdown from the wonderfully erratic Jay Cutler with 30 seconds left.

Notice that I didn't say it was a "meaningless" touchdown.

So there you have it, the beauty that is fantasy football. Thousands of leagues probably turned on a score that, if not for fantasy, not even Jeffery's mother would have cared about. Of course there are plenty of people going from cubicle to cubicle today telling the bad-beat story about how they held the lead until that no-good Jeffery scored with 30 seconds left, but that's why they'll come back to play next year.

(H/T to @natecarlisle for sending along Cox's tweets.)

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 23 Marcos Ambrose

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Marcos Ambrose

NASCAR Experience: Six full seasons in the Sprint Cup Series and two consecutive wins at Watkins Glen in 2011 and 2012.

Most recent team: Richard Petty Motorsports.

Most recent season finish: 23rd.

2014 accomplishments: Top fives at Bristol and Martinsville to start the season, and eighth at Sonoma and a second at Watkins Glen.

Most memorable moment: The battle with AJ Allmendinger to try to secure a berth in the Chase. Watch it again, will you?

Oh, and this, which gave us a teaser of what was to come in the Chase.

Strengths: This doesn't need to be explained, does it?

2015 goals: Kick some ass in V8 Supercars.

FTM's Take: One of the road course drivers in recent memory will be especially missed when the Cup Series heads to Sonoma and Watkins Glen. We'll remember the two wins at Watkins Glen, and we'll remember his misses of other wins too There was the time he stalled the car going uphill at Sonoma. The way his dominance in 2013 was snatched away. The duel with Allmendinger at the end of this year's race.

But let's flash back to 2012, shall we? What a freaking final lap. This is going to be our favorite memory of Ambrose in the Cup Series.

News sport : Reports: Bo Pelini to be next coach at Youngstown State

Nov 28, 2014; Iowa City, IA, USA; Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Bo Pelini looks on during their game against the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium. (Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports) A little more than two weeks after being fired by Nebraska, Bo Pelini has reportedly found a new gig.

According to multiple reports, Pelini has agreed to be the next head coach at FCS Youngstown State. Per the Youngstown Vindicator, an announcement from the school could come later on Tuesday. Football Scoop first reported last week that Pelini planned to accept YSU's offer.

Pelini was fired by Nebraska on Nov. 30 despite having a 67-27 record in seven seasons leading the program. The Huskers went 9-3 under Pelini’s watch this season, but school athletic director Shawn Eichorst decided to make a change. Nebraska then hired Oregon State’s Mike Riley less than a week after Pelini's dismissal.

At Youngstown, Pelini would replace Eric Wolford, who was fired in late November after going 31-26 in five seasons.

Pelini is a Youngstown native who played collegiately at Ohio State. Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is now the president at YSU. Before taking over at Nebraska in 2008, Pelini was the defensive coordinator at LSU from 2005-07 and also had one-year stints at Oklahoma in 2004 and Nebraska in 2003.

Before his first job at Nebraska, Pelini was a defensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers from 1994-2002.

News sport : Mississippi State DC Geoff Collins heading to Florida

New Florida coach Jim McElwain has found his defensive coordinator.

The Gators have hired Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins. The news was confirmed by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger and first reported by SI.com.

Collins has been at Mississippi State for four seasons under coach Dan Mullen, whose first season with the program was in 2009. Mullen, a former Florida offensive coordinator, hired Collins from Florida International. Collins served as MSU's defensive coordinator for two seasons after being the team's co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for two seasons.

In addition to coaching at FIU, Collins has also coached at UCF; his strong Florida ties are likely a major reason for his hire. Per the Clarion-Ledger, Collins signed a two-year contract extension with MSU in January.

Mississippi State's defense was ranked 80th in yards per game but was 10th in scoring defense, giving up 19.4 points per game. Florida's defense was ninth in yards per game in 2014 and gave up 21 points per game. The Bulldogs were ranked so low in yards per game because of their struggles against the pass. While MSU only gave up 126 yards per game on the ground, it gave up 285 yards a game through the air.

Current Florida interim coach D.J. Durkin served as the team's defensive coordinator in 2014 under fired coach Will Muschamp. He could and should be a candidate for a defensive coordinator job at another Power Five conference school. Durkin will coach Florida against East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl on January 3.

News sport : Notre Dame to play two quarterbacks in bowl game

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson’s season began with him in the Heisman discussion and will end with him splitting snaps.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said Monday that both Golson, a redshirt junior, and Malik Zaire, a redshirt freshman, will play when the Fighting Irish take on LSU in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30. Golson started every game this season for the 7-5 Irish, but he was replaced by Zaire after struggling mightily in the 49-14 regular season finale loss to USC.

Against the Trojans, Zaire completed 9-of-20 passes for 170 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

“We got a glimpse of what (Zaire) could do against USC,” Kelly said per IrishIllustrated.com. “But I think both of them can help us win. I want to play them both because I think both of them have different traits and we need to find a way to win the game. I think both of them can help us win.”

While he doesn’t know exactly how the snaps between Golson and Zaire will be divided, Kelly said using both quarterbacks would help the team “control the flow of the game.”

“It’s not going to be pull one and put the other one in because they’re not moving the team,” Kelly said. “We’re going to be utilizing both of them. Everett’s got a lot of experience. He threw for a lot of yards, over 3,000 yards. He’s capable of obviously some big plays and throwing the football. Malik’s not as experienced, but Malik’s shown himself to be very good at running some of our read option stuff.”

Golson was Notre Dame’s starting during its run to the BCS Championship Game in 2012, but missed all of 2013 with an academic suspension. He returned this season and threw for 3,355 yards and 29 touchdowns, but turned the ball over 22 times (14 interceptions, eight lost fumbles).

The Irish started the season 6-0 and ascended to No. 5 in the rankings, but the team lost five of its last six games – including its final four – to end the regular season in disappointing fashion.

Moving forward, with both Golson and Zaire returning in 2015, Kelly said he hasn’t ruled out a quarterback competition heading into next season.

“I’m open really to anything at this point. We want to put the best football team, the best offense that we can put on the field,” Kelly said. “Ideally, you’d like to have one, but if we’ve got two, then that’s what we’ll do. We’ll see how this plays out and then evaluate it as we move forward. I haven’t closed to door to any kind of scenario.”

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 24 Martin Truex Jr.

Name: Martin Truex Jr.

NASCAR Experience: Nine full Sprint Cup Series seasons and two wins. The 2004 and 2005 NASCAR Busch (Nationwide) [Xfinity] Series champion.

Most recent team: Furniture Row Racing

Most recent season finish: 24th

2014 accomplishments: Finished fourth at Kansas in the fall and led a lap at Talladega in the fall. Didn't get hit by a meteor at the beginning of the season when on-track performance started out poorly.

Most memorable moment: Simply having a full-time ride after NAPA left Michael Waltrip Racing following the race manipulation thing at Richmond last year. Unrelated to performance on the track, it's having longtime girlfriend Sherry Pollex back at the track following her August cancer diagnosis.

Strengths: Won on a road course and a one-mile track and has shown strength at intermediate tracks.

2015 goals: Try to replicate Furniture Row's 2013 when it made the Chase with Kurt Busch. Get win No. 3.

FTM's Take: While Furniture Row and Truex were meant for each other for 2014 given their situations entering the season, the results weren't what anyone was expecting. And we don't mean that in a good way. It's crazy to think that Truex led just a single lap and had one top-five finish. Of his nine full-time Sprint Cup seasons, 2014 had his fewest top 10s, laps led and his lowest finish in the standings. But all of that was second to Pollex's cancer diagnosis.

Simply put, it was a rough season for Truex. With a crowded field ahead, moving up is easier said than done. But Truex should contend for the top 20 next year.

Previous reviews: No. 25 Tony Stewart, No. 26 Casey Mears, No. 27 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 28, Danica Patrick, No. 29, Justin Allgaier, No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman

News sport : No, Tim Tebow is not going to play quarterback for the Cardinals

Tell your Facebook friends: no, Tim Tebow is not going to the Cardinals.

Facebook allows your friends to share all kinds of fascinating information with the world, but if your friends are either 1. not well-versed in how Internet gags work or 2. not very smart, chances are they'll happily pass along this little tidbit from satire site Daily Leak.

It's a joke, folks, like the one about Facebook coming to steal your pets or the one where the Redskins swap in a new quarterback every 15 minutes. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2M Week 16 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 17,475 teams paid]

Now, this will no doubt spur a new round of "Tebow never got a chance!" cries, despite the fact that he had a shot with three different teams. The Broncos traded him to make room for Peyton Manning, which is pretty defensible, but he couldn't outplay Mark Sanchez in New York and couldn't even make the regular-season roster in New England. Tebow is a wonderfully nice fellow, but while on the field, his throwing motion resembled a riverboat's paddle, and you could time his passing release with a sun dial.

So, no, he won't be playing for Arizona this season. Washington, on the other hand ... we wouldn't put anything past those guys.

Herrera, 25, played in the match in question, which Zaragoza won 2-1. He moved to Athletic Bilbao later that year before joining United last June in a £28.8 million (36 million euros, $45 million) transfer.

Writing on Facebook, he said: “In an on-going legal process involving Real Zaragoza (Spain), the club I was honoured to play (for) from 12 until 22 years of age, there are 41 people cited as possible witnesses, of which I am one. I have never had and will never have anything to do with manipulating match results.

“If I am ever called to testify in any judicial hearing, I'll be happy to attend, as my conscience is totally clear. I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch.”

According to Spanish state prosecutors, Zaragoza paid a total of 965,000 euros into the bank accounts of its coaches, staff and players, who gave the money to Levante's players as a “bribe”.

Zaragoza's directors, coaches and captains “agreed... with the consent of the rest of the players, to fix the match”, the prosecutors alleged.

Zaragoza won the match 2-1 against Levante, who had already escaped relegation that season, with two goals from their then-captain Gabi Fernandez.

Spanish sports daily Marca said on Monday that if the case goes to trial and the accused are found guilty, they could face jail sentences of up to four years.

Japan's Mexican coach Javier Aguirre, then coach of Zaragoza, and Swansea City's Ecuadorian winger Jefferson Montero, who played for Levante at the time, are among the people named in the investigation.

When asked about Montero's alleged involvement in the affair, a Swansea spokesperson said: “We have had no contact from anyone regarding the matter.” – Sapa-AFP
