Rodgers denies dressing room unrest

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers rejected reports of dressing room unrest after his side's poor start to the season.

|||

London - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers rejected reports of dressing room unrest after his side's poor start to the season, saying spirits are high for Wednesday's League Cup quarter-final at second-tier Bournemouth.

Rodgers led Liverpool to an unexpected runners-up finish in the Premier League last season but a failure to rediscover that form has seen the Reds slip to 11th in the table and suffer an early Champions League exit.

A mistake-laden 3-0 defeat at bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday prompted media reports that the Liverpool manager had lost the confidence of his players.

“I hear one or two bits and pieces about unrest and it is totally untrue,” Rodgers told a news conference on Tuesday. “Our dressing room is very strong.

“These are competitive players who nearly won the league last year, so they won't be happy with losing. But the actual spirit in the group is very strong.

“That is one of the reasons why, when we get that confidence back, then we will go into the second half of the season and be much better.

“We just need a little bit of luck and a break and I think we will get that. When we get some consistent results we can push on.”

Liverpool have 21 points from 16 games in the Premier League, 18 adrift of leaders Chelsea. The pressure is mounting on Rodgers to get a positive result when Arsenal visit Anfield on Sunday.

The Northern Irishman, however, was not looking past the visit to championship side Bournemouth and will not rest players against lower league opponents with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

“This is the first cup competition that you can win, so it was always a priority for me. We wanted to do well in it,” he said.

“At the moment we're only looking at the next game, but that's something that I've always done throughout my time here. The next game is the most important.

“Of course, we've got a big game at the weekend on top of that. But the idea is to go into the game tomorrow night to win and I'll pick the team that I think can win the game.” – Reuters

News sport : Iowa State's Devlyn Cousin suspended after domestic assault charge

Iowa State defensive tackle Devlyn Cousin was charged with domestic assault after he was arrested for an incident Friday.

According to the arrest report per the Des Moines Register, Harris allegedly pushed a woman identified as his girlfriend to the ground as the two were arguing before 9 p.m.

He's also charged with obstruction of emergency communication.

From the Register:

Huff said the 911 operator heard a woman crying and a man yelling in the background before the phone connection suddenly went dead. The woman was not able to speak directly to the operator, Huff said.

After his arrest, Cousin was suspended indefinitely by Iowa State. The Cyclones, at 2-10 in 2014, aren't going to a bowl game.

"We are aware of the charges filed against Devlyn, and we take them very seriously," Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement. "The allegations brought against Devlyn are not consistent with the expectations of our program.

"Devlyn is currently suspended indefinitely under the Iowa State student-athlete discipline policy as we gather more information."

Cousin, a redshirt sophomore, played in nine games in 2014 and had 12 tackles with a sack and a tackle for a loss.

News sport : Andrew Hawkins on T-shirt message: 'Justice should be the goal of every American'

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins drew both praise and grief for his decision to wear a "Justice" T-shirt prior to Cleveland's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hawkins sought to bring awareness to the cases of Tamir Rice and John Crawford III, two recent Ohio instances where unarmed individuals were shot and killed by police under debatable circumstances.

Cleveland police were not pleased. "It's pretty pathetic when athletes think they know the law," Cleveland police union head Jeff Follmer said in a brusque, tone-deaf statement. "They should stick to what they know best on the field. The Cleveland police protect and serve the Browns stadium, and the Browns organization owes us an apology."

Hawkins did not apologize. Instead, he clarified and amplified his message on Monday in a way that should encourage critics on both sides of the debate. Speaking for six minutes without notes, Hawkins noted his call for justice wasn't meant to undercut the police. "Ultimately, it means fair treatment," he said. "So a call for justice shouldn’t offend or disrespect anybody. A call for justice shouldn’t warrant an apology."

Hawkins also expressed the strongest possible support for the police, many of whom he counts as family and friends. "My wearing a T-shirt wasn’t a stance against every police officer or every police department," he said. "My wearing the T-shirt was a stance against wrong individuals doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons to innocent people."

Here, via ESPN, is Hawkins' statement in full. It's well worth reading, particularly for those who dismiss athletes as ignorant or selfish pawns in these kinds of social justice stories:

“I was taught that justice is a right that every American should have. Also justice should be the goal of every American. I think that’s what makes this country. To me, justice means the innocent should be found innocent. It means that those who do wrong should get their due punishment. Ultimately, it means fair treatment. So a call for justice shouldn’t offend or disrespect anybody. A call for justice shouldn’t warrant an apology.

“To clarify, I utterly respect and appreciate every police officer that protects and serves all of us with honesty, integrity and the right way. And I don’t think those kind of officers should be offended by what I did. My mom taught me my entire life to respect law enforcement. I have family, close friends that are incredible police officers and I tell them all the time how they are much braver than me for it. So my wearing a T-shirt wasn’t a stance against every police officer or every police department. My wearing the T-shirt was a stance against wrong individuals doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons to innocent people.

“Unfortunately, my mom also taught me just as there are good police officers, there are some not-so-good police officers that would assume the worst of me without knowing anything about me for reasons I can’t control. She taught me to be careful and be on the lookout for those not-so-good police officers because they could potentially do me harm and most times without consequences. Those are the police officers that should be offended.

“Being a police officer takes bravery. And I understand that they’re put in difficult positions and have to make those snap decisions. As a football player, I know a little bit about snap decisions, obviously on an extremely lesser and non-comparative scale, because when a police officer makes a snap decision, it’s literally a matter of life and death. That’s hard a situation to be in. But if the wrong decision is made, based on pre-conceived notions or the wrong motives, I believe there should be consequence. Because without consequence, naturally the magnitude of the snap decisions is lessened, whether consciously or unconsciously.

“I’m not an activist, in any way, shape or form. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred I keep my opinions to myself on most matters. I worked extremely hard to build and keep my reputation especially here in Ohio, and by most accounts I’ve done a solid job of decently building a good name. Before I made the decision to wear the T-shirt, I understood I was putting that reputation in jeopardy to some of those people who wouldn’t necessarily agree with my perspective. I understood there was going to be backlash, and that scared me, honestly. But deep down I felt like it was the right thing to do. If I was to run away from what I felt in my soul was the right thing to do, that would make me a coward, and I can’t live with that. God wouldn’t be able to put me where I am today, as far as I’ve come in life, if I was a coward.

“As you well know, and it’s well documented, I have a 2-year-old little boy. The same 2-year-old little boy that everyone said was cute when I jokingly threw him out of the house earlier this year. That little boy is my entire world. And the No. 1 reason for me wearing the T-shirt was the thought of what happened to Tamir Rice happening to my little Austin scares the living hell out of me. And my heart was broken for the parents of Tamir and John Crawford knowing they had to live that nightmare of a reality.

“So, like I said, I made the conscious decision to wear the T-shirt. I felt like my heart was in the right place. I’m at peace with it and those that disagree with me, this is America, everyone has the right to their first amendment rights. Those who support me, I appreciate your support. But at the same time, support the causes and the people and the injustices that you feel strongly about. Stand up for them. Speak up for them. No matter what it is because that’s what America’s about and that’s what this country was founded on.”

News sport : VOD: South Alabama P Corliss Waitman's trick shot kick

We'll give you all of Tuesday to go recreate this kick. And we're going to guess you won't be able to come close.

South Alabama punter Corliss Waitman spun the ball to himself, popped it up in the air via a backheel and then punted it through the uprights. Here's your video proof.

Yeah, pretty cool.

Waitman is a freshman at South Alabama, a team that's going bowling for the first time when it plays in the Camellia Bowl on Saturday against Bowling Green. However, Waitman may not be on the field. He's the backup punter and Brandon McKee has taken every punt for the Jaguars this season.

Tributes pour in for Henry

Present-day Arsenal stars led the tributes to club great Thierry Henry after the former France striker announced his retirement from professional football.

|||

London – Present-day Arsenal stars led the tributes to club great Thierry Henry after the former France striker announced his retirement from professional football.

Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations on an outstanding career (at)ThierryHenry. Top player. Top guy. #Legend.”

The club's German playmaker Mesut Ozil tweeted: “Once you enchanted all of us – now I can only say: Thanks for everything! (at)ThierryHenry #ArsenalLegend.”

English winger Theo Walcott, who inherited Henry's number 14 jersey after the Frenchman left the club in 2007, said: “A true inspiration to me in my career. Thank you (at)ThierryHenry & good luck in your new path.”

Henry, 37, became a world and European champion with France and won the Champions League at Barcelona, but it is for his record-breaking exploits with Arsenal that he will be best remembered.

He won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the club, set a new club scoring record of 228 goals, and was honoured with a statue outside the Emirates Stadium in 2011.

Having finished his career with the New York Red Bulls, Henry is due to return to London next month to work as an analyst and ambassador for Sky Sports.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, who will work alongside Henry at Sky, said: “We were blessed in this country to see Thierry playing at his peak.

“He's potentially one of the greatest players in the world and even if you supported another team, you couldn't help but enjoy watching him play.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker, now a BBC television presenter, wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations to (at)ThierryHenry on a truly wonderful career. One of the great footballers of our time and a top bloke. Bonne chance.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge described Henry as “my hero and idol” and wished him a “happy retirement”.

British television personality Piers Morgan, one of Arsenal's most high-profile fans, tweeted: “Thank you (at)ThierryHenry for all the goals & trophies – and the sheer, majestic glory of the way you played football. What a career.”

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, British football writer Henry Winter said: “He loved playing, dribbling, running, scoring, and his example suffused countless impressionable young fans with an awareness that the game should be about joy and adventure.”

Henry's time at Barcelona brought him the Champions League trophy that had eluded him at Arsenal, as well as two league titles, the Copa del Rey, the Uefa Super Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup.

A message on the club's website concluded: “Merci, Henry!”

Not all of the reaction to Henry's retirement was positive, however, owing to his handball in a World Cup qualifying play-off against the Republic of Ireland in 2009 that helped France qualify at Ireland's expense.

“There are a few greats who spoil that with what they do,” former Ireland midfielder Rory Delap told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I'm sure he regrets that. There is still a lot of feeling back home.” – Sapa-AFP

News sport : Marcus Mariota reads Letterman's Top 10 list (Video)

Marcus Mariota can say he was the last Heisman winner to go on the Late Show with David Letterman after winning the award.

The 2014 Heisman winner made an appearance on Letterman's show Monday night and read the show's famous Top Ten list. Mariota had some fun with it, and we'd love if he used the pose fron No. 2 in a touchdown celebration against Florida State. Our favorite was No. 3, however. Bashing on New York's NFL teams is the thing to do right now, but we still thought it was funny.

Letterman's last show will be May 20. Stephen Colbert is taking over for him in 2015.

News sport : Les Miles says he's not a candidate for Michigan job

LSU coach Les Miles told reporters on Monday that he wasn't a candidate for the head coaching job at Michigan.

From NOLA.com:

In a post-practice session with reporters, Miles declined to be quoted directly but made it clear he is not seeking the job and has not been contacted personally, or through his agent, Dallas-based George Bass, formally or informally.

Per the AP, a spokesperson from the school said Miles has told LSU the same thing.

Miles, a Michigan alum, has been linked to the Michigan job for the second time after Brady Hoke was at the end of the season. While Nebraska, Oregon State and other schools have hired coaches, Michigan hasn't selected its new head coach yet.

His name was brought up for the Michigan job in 2007 before the Wolverines hired Rich Rodriguez. Then, LSU was coming off an appearance in the SEC Championship Game. This year, LSU is heading to the Music City Bowl after an 8-4 season, Miles' 10th at LSU.

And, per Miles, all signs point to an 11th.

LSU faces Notre Dame on December 30 in Nashville.

‘Legend’Henry hangs up his boots

Former Arsenal and French striker Thierry Henry announced he was retiring from football after a glittering two decades long career.

|||

Paris – Former Arsenal and French striker Thierry Henry announced he was retiring from football after a glittering two decades long career and will become a TV analyst for Sky Sports in England.

“After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football,” Henry said in a statement on his Facebook page.

Henry, 37, a world and European champion with France, and the scorer of 228 goals with Arsenal including 175 English Premier League goals for the club, finished his playing career at New York Red Bulls just days ago.

“It is now time for a different career path and I am pleased to say that I will be returning to London and joining Sky Sports,” he said.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said recently that Henry will “certainly” return to the club in some capacity in the future.

Henry, who has a daughter based in England, himself said in recent weeks that he wants to help Arsenal win the Champions League.

Henry first made his mark at French club Monaco before moving to Italian giants Juventus.

But the bulk of his career was spent at Arsenal under Wenger, who brought him to north London in 1999.

He was a crucial part of the 2003-2004 “Invincibles” team alongside fellow Frenchman Patrick Vieira, which went unbeaten as it stormedto the Premier League title.

In England, Henry won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup three times.

Henry left England for Barcelona in 2007, spending three years with the Spanish giants with whom he won the Champions League trophy in 2009.

He finished his career in the United States, playing for the New York Red Bulls in the MLS, but returned to Arsenal for four matches on loan from the Red Bulls in 2012, coming on as a substitute to score the winner against Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup.

He could not however prevent the Red Bulls being eliminated in the semi-finals of the playoffs this season.

Henry will also be remembered for a blatant handball in a 2009 World Cup qualifying playoff against the Republic of Ireland which led to the decisive goal for France and a ticket to the 2010 finals.

His last international game was during the 2010 World Cup when he came on as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 loss to hosts South Africa as France were dumped out of a tournament which had been a fiasco for the 1998 World Cup winners.

Capped 123 times for France, he scored a national record 51during his international career which began with a 2-1 win over South Africa in October 1997.

Tributes poured in for Henry, who scored 411 goals during his career, with French professional football league president Frederic Thiriez describing him as a “legend”.

“The English erected a statue to him but in France he did not always get the recognition he deserved,” said Thiriez of the statute dedicated to Henry at the Emirates Stadium.

“With his extraordinary track record and his record of goals for the national side, Thierry Henry nevertheless will remain a legend, he was an exceptional striker. Simply the best.”

Former England international Gary Lineker, now a broadcaster, tweeted: “Congratulations to (at)ThierryHentry on a truly wonderful career. One of the great footballers of our time and a top bloke. Bonne chance.”

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey also tweeted: “Congratulations on an outstanding career (at)ThierryHenry. Top player. Top guy. #Legend,” while England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, added: “Happy retirement to my hero and idol (at)ThierryHenry. Wish you all the best in the next chapter.” –Sapa-AFP

United can win league - Rooney

Wayne Rooney has warned Premier League leaders Chelsea that Manchester United are capable of winning the title this season.

|||

London – Wayne Rooney has warned Premier League leaders Chelsea that Manchester United are capable of winning the title this season.

United stretched their winning run to six matches on Sunday with an emphatic 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Despite struggling in the opening stages of what was expected to be a season of transition under new manager Louis van Gaal, United have risen to third in the table and they are only eight points adrift of Chelsea heading into the hectic Christmas programme.

So far this season Chelsea have looked the class of the league, but that does not faze Rooney.

The striker was part of the United team that won the league six seasons ago despite trailing Liverpool by eight points in January and he also remembers their last triumph in 2013, when they won the title by 11 points despite rarely blowing sides away.

“I think we have to believe we can win the title,” Rooney said.

“We are eight points behind and coming into a busy period.

“If we can win our games and the others have one bad result then there is nothing there.

“We have to keep winning our games and hopefully get back to the top and you never know.

“We won the league two years ago and we weren't great in a lot of those games but we got the results.

“We have shown a great resilience this season. Some of the games haven't gone the way we would like but we are winning them and that is a great quality to have.

“We have been here before but we have a lot of new players and this is where the experience of myself, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher can rub off on the other players.” – Sapa-AFP

Barkley shines as Everton beat QPR

Ross Barkley scored a sublime goal as Everton beat Queens Park Rangers to subject the travel-weary Londoners to their eighth away defeat.

|||

Liverpool- Ross Barkley scored a sublime goal as Everton beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1 at Goodison Park to subject the travel-weary Londoners to their eighth away defeat in as many Premier League matches this season.

Barkley picked up possession in his own half in the 33rd minute, exchanged passes with Romelu Lukaku before driving at the defence and unleashing an unstoppable left-foot shot into the top corner for his first goal of an injury-plagued season.

Kevin Mirallas doubled the lead after 44 minutes with a wickedly-deflected free kick. Steven Naismith headed a third goal eight minutes after the break before substitute Bobby Zamora notched a late consolation for Rangers.

Everton's first league victory since Nov. 22 lifted them above local rivals Liverpool into 10th place on 21 points while QPR, without a point away from home this season, remained 18th, four points above bottom club Leicester City.

In the absence of Gareth Barry, man-of-the-match Barkley was deployed in a deep midfield role alongside the tenacious Muhamed Besic and the 21-year-old excelled.

“Wherever I am on the pitch I try to affect the game,” England international Barkley told Sky Sports television.

“Anywhere on the pitch I'll enjoy playing but to get the three points and three goals against a QPR side who played well was great.”

Barkley's brilliant goal injected life into a stuttering Everton performance against the visitors who had been on the front foot for much of the opening half hour.

Mirallas' free kick and Naismith's deflected header, after a series of avoidable defensive errors, added a slightly flattering gloss to the home team's display.

QPR battled hard and scored a deserved 80th-minute goal when Zamora supplied a simple finish after keeper Tim Howard had parried Jordan Mutch's well-struck effort.

It sparked a late flurry of activity as Everton substitute Samuel Eto'o blazed a low shot against the post and Barkley's tantalising cross was just too strong for Arouna Kone. – Reuters

News sport : Khris Middleton's bouncing buzzer-beater 3 lifts Bucks over Suns

The Milwaukee Bucks have been impressive enough this season to have graduated from an early surprise team to genuine challengers for a postseason berth with the ability to surprise a favorite in the opening round. Yet if the basketball world has agreed to take the Bucks seriously, then it's also true that we're just starting to understand what makes them exciting and watchable. This young team isn't just getting better — they're also a lot of fun.

Monday night's road contest against the Phoenix Suns served as another case for the Bucks' case as a League Pass must-watch. After falling behind 26-14 in the first quarter, Milwaukee battled back over the next three periods. Down 94-93 with 3.5 seconds left following a go-ahead jumper from Suns forward Markieff Morris, the Bucks didn't get their ideal shot out of a timeout. It didn't matter, though, because Khris Middleton got a fortuitous bounce at the buzzer:

The Suns might have doubled over in agony after the shot because they just can't seem to catch a break. They've now lost six games in a row, five of which have come by six points or less, and have fallen into ninth in the West at 12-14.

Meanwhile, the Bucks' 96-94 win served as a positive ending to a night that could turn out to be a negative one in the broader context of the team's season. A little more than a minute into the second half, rookie forward Jabari Parker had his knee buckle while dribbling in transition. He was carried off the court by teammates and initially diagnosed with a sprained left knee, which means relatively little pending the results of a likely forthcoming MRI. Here's the video, if you care to watch it:

The Bucks would miss Parker for various reasons. The second-overall pick in June's draft hasn't scored with incredible consistency in the early going, but he has impressed enough and improved as he has gained experience. The Bucks have plenty of players with potential yet lack obvious go-to scorers — Parker could conceivably become that guy. Perhaps more crucially, he is at a point in his career where missing extended time could delay his development and stall the Bucks' progress.

So here's hoping the injury isn't serious and ends up as a minor bump in Parker's rookie season. We could use a team as fun as the Bucks for the rest of the year.

No. 1 Star: Brian Flynn, Buffalo Sabres

The Penguins pest scored a goal and assisted on Brian Dumoulin’s dagger in the third period as Pittsburgh defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-2. Downie, a former Bolt, also had six hits.

No. 3 Star: Josh Bailey, New York Islanders

Bailey sparked an Islanders rally in the second period and then closed out the game in the shootout as New York topped the New Jersey Devils, 3-2.

News sport : John Tavares spears Marek Zidlicky, who didn’t think it’s ‘necessary’

At 18:11 of the third period on Monday night, Marek Zidlicky delivered an open-ice hit on New York Islanders captain John Tavares.

This was not something Tavares appreciated. So he responded like any man carrying a large piece of lumber would respond, which was to cram it into Zidlicky’s lower body.

Tavares was given two minutes for slashing, which is apparently a polite way of saying “spearing.”

The Islanders killed off the penalty, and eventually beat the Devils in the shootout for a 3-2 victory, because that’s what happens when the Islanders and Devils go to the shootout, respectively.

After the game, Zidlicky recalled the spear via Tom Gulitti: "I don't think it was necessary. I don't know what to say. It is what it is.”

Did it hurt? "A little bit the first couple seconds. He hit my stomach, but I'm OK,” he said.

So there you go. Even in spearing, Tavares has impeccable aim.

News sport : Official Lakers Twitter tries to put positive spin on worst half ever

The 2013-14 Los Angeles Lakers are not very good, but for the first two months of the season the franchise and its fans could at least look forward to the iconic Kobe Bryant's pursuit of several major milestones and records. However, after Sunday's passing of Michael Jordan on the all-time scoring list, Kobe doesn't have any more marks in his imminent future. In other words, the Lakers are going to have to find other sources of positivity as the team slouches its way towards the lottery.

Their first effort did not go very well. Monday's road game against the Indiana Pacers went very poorly, with the Lakers shooting a paltry 16.3 percent from the field on their way to a 60-27 halftime deficit, the franchise's worst first half since moving to Los Angeles in 1960. It would seem very difficult to find any silver lining to such a mess, but the team's official Twitter account did its best:

The second one could be the greatest tweet in the medium's history. There's just so much here — the idea that scoring seven points in the opening 18 minutes is especially impressive, the underplayed admission of failure, etc. It's as if someone turned this classic "The Simpsons" moment into pure Twitter joy:

When the half finally ended, our fearless social media manager made the mistake of thinking that highlighting a strong close would provide some hope heading into the final 24 minutes. Instead, it just served to emphasize how much the Lakers had failed:

The Lakers performed significantly better in the second half and ended up with a 110-91 loss to the Pacers, a sorry but not historically terrible showing. As things improved, though, the official Twitter account happened upon arguably the greatest image for this season's Lakers:

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but these 107 characters do the trick just fine. What else do you need to talk about this team? There's a generationally excellent player doing something impressive in isolation, with his trademark intensity, despite his team losing by 23 points in the second half. A photo would need the score and time remaining in the background to communicate the same.

Remember when I said fans might need to search long and far for a reason to enjoy this team? Based on Monday's performance, I think we have found that necessary silver lining for the rest of the Lakers' season. Their official Twitter account is a must-follow.

United’s Herrera fingered in match-fixing

Spanish prosecutors filed match-fixing allegations against Japan coach Javier Aguirre and Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera.

|||

Madrid – Spanish prosecutors filed match-fixing allegations against Japan coach Javier Aguirre and Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera, accusing them and 39 others of rigging a decisive 2011league match.

In a court filing seen by AFP, state prosecutors alleged Real Zaragoza players and staff handed hundreds of thousands of euros in cash to Levante players to let Zaragoza win the last match of the season that year and thereby avoid relegation.

The prosecutors said Zaragoza paid a total of 965,000 euros ($1.2million) into the bank accounts of certain of its coaches, staff and players.

Zaragoza won the match 2-1 against Levante, who had already escaped relegation that season, with two goals from Zaragoza's then captain Gabi Fernandez.

Spanish sports daily Marca said that if the case goes to trial and the accused are found guilty, they could face jail sentences of up to four years.

Zaragoza's directors, coaches and captains “agreed... with the consent of rest of the players, to fix the match”, the prosecutors alleged.

They listed five staff and 18 players of Zaragoza plus 18 Levante players among the accused.

Mexican Aguirre, 56, was Zaragoza coach at the time but was fired a few months into the following season and went on to coach Espanyol.

He was named coach of Japan's national side last June after Japan were knocked out of the World Cup in Brazil in the group stages without a win.

However, last week Japan Football Association (JFA) president Kuniya Daini said that they wouldn't have hired Aguirre if they had been aware of the match-fixing scandal.

Herrera, 25, played for Zaragoza in the match in question on May 21, 2011.

Manchester United bought him for £28.8 million (36 million euros, $45 million) from Athletic Bilbao last June in one of the first signings by the English side's new coach Louis van Gaal.

Monday's filing was submitted to a judge in the eastern city of Valencia. The judge will decide whether to open a formal judicial investigation.

The recipients then withdrew the same amounts in cash and gave them to Levante players as a “bribe” to throw the match, the prosecutors said.

“The deeds described constitute sporting fraud,” the prosecutors wrote.

Among those accused, Fernandez, 31, current captain of Spanish league champions Atletico Madrid, denied the match was fixed, when questioned by prosecutors in a previous hearing in the case on October 2.

He said the payment was a bonus and that he returned it in cash when the club asked for it back a few days later, judicial sources said.
