Di Maria to miss Liverpool clash

Angel di Maria will miss Manchester United's match against Liverpool as he remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

|||

Manchester - Angel di Maria will miss Manchester United's match against Liverpool on Sunday as the winger remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Although the Argentina international misses a third game, defenders Rafael da Silva (groin) and Phil Jones (shin) return from injury. Defenders Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling, and midfielder Daley Blind are still recovering from injuries.

Manager Louis van Gaal says “now, I have only four players injured, so that's better than ever I believe.”

Despite the injuries, United has won five consecutive Premier League matches to climb to third in the league.

While United appears to be recovering after last season's seventh-place finish, Liverpool is in decline. Last season's runners-up are now ninth in the standings.

News sport : Kobe Bryant falls short of Michael Jordan's scoring mark, but helps stir the drink as the Lakers win

In a young season rife with rightful criticism, Kobe Bryant went completely against type on Friday night in playing the sort of team ball necessary to down the defending champs on their home court by a 112-110 overtime score.

He also acted, for long stretches, as stereotype late-career Kobe Bryant. It was fascinating.

The kicker is the fact that had Kobe Bryant played the sort of shot-happy, inefficient ball that has marked his 2014-15 turn, he could have passed his model Michael Jordan and moved into third place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Instead, Bryant held back and made the correct plays that he usually anticipates before any other mere mortals, plays he often disregards prior to tossing up another jumper.

Kobe finished with 22 points on 22 shots as a heretofore terrible Lakers team knocked off a Spurs squad working with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and even Tony Parker for a spell. Kobe entered the game needing 31 points to top MJ, but he sat huge chunks of the second and fourth quarter without a complaint, and his work down the stretch helped an active Lakers squad retain their lead in the win.

His absence, for whatever reason, also saw the Lakers building that lead. This team is so strange.

Bryant made expert pocket and screen and roll passes, hitting the sorts of teammates he recently denigrated in full and knowledgeable view of the media on Thursday afternoon. Kobe may have missed 15 of 22 shots, but he had ample opportunity to gun for Jordan’s scoring mark several times in this contest, but instead chose to make the intelligent and proper basketball play that suits his basketball genius – obvious passes that he often ignores in order to launch yet another shot.

Bryant routinely found big men Carlos Boozer, Jordan Hill, and swingman Wesley Johnson for great looks with gorgeous passes on his way toward nine assists in 40 minutes of action. In the game’s deciding play, with Kobe barking at guard Jeremy Lin (who had sat about 30 minutes of real time prior to the play after being pulled to the bench) late in overtime, mercurial Laker scorer Nick Young hit a three-pointer with just under eight seconds to go in overtime. Young actually finished the contest with a team-high 29 points, two short of what Bryant needed to top Jordan and move into third place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Bryant didn’t always play up to the competition. His shooting percentages were obviously poor and his rookie-like turnover late in regulation helped San Antonio overcome what seemed to be an insurmountable late game lead, but the movements were telling. Kobe mixed in equal parts the attributes that allow NBA observers to both revere, admire, and shake their damned heads at him – he forced shots, he sat willingly, he made pinpoint passes to teammates that were open, and he hit a killer clutch three-pointer late in regulation that nearly put the game away.

Kobe Bryant finished with a -1 plus/minus in a two-point Laker win, he took and missed more shots than any other teammate, and he turned the ball over more than any other teammate. And yet he looked like the best Laker on the court on Friday night, while declining the chance to fire away and top Michael Jordan’s career output in front of a nationally televised stage against the defending NBA champions.

This is peak Kobe Bryant. And it’s so much fun.

Bryant is nine points away from moving past Jordan, and the Lakers play against the similarly-lowly Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night. Find somebody with NBA League Pass that evening, because you’re going to want to tune in. Even while defining his stereotypes in full view of a national audience, Kobe Bryant still finds a way to defy them.

News sport : Georgia tackle Kolton Houston granted sixth year of eligibility

Georgia received good news from the NCAA on Friday.

The program announced that starting right tackle Kolton Houston has been granted a sixth year of eligibility and will be able to play one last season in 2015.

Houston originally enrolled at Georgia in 2010, but was declared ineligible for testing positive for an anabolic steroid called norandalone. As a high school junior, Houston was given the steroid injection by a doctor following shoulder surgery. Due to poor aim from the doctor, the substance remained in fat deposits in his system at levels that exceeded NCAA limits, leading to suspensions from the NCAA.

He was eventually reinstated in July 2013 and has seen significant playing time for the Bulldogs over the last two seasons. In 2013, Houston played in 13 games and made six starts. This season, Houston started all 12 games at right tackle.

The 9-3 Bulldogs will face Louisville in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte on Dec. 30.

News sport : Reports: Auburn hires Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator

Nov 29, 2014; Tallahassee, FL, USA; Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp walks across the field prior to the game against the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium. (Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports) Fired Florida head coach Will Muschamp will reportedly remain in the SEC.

According to multiple reports, Muschamp has agreed to become the defensive coordinator under Gus Malzahn at Auburn. Muschamp, who was fired after four seasons and a 28-21 record at Florida, interviewed for the head coaching position at Houston according to Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde, but pulled his name from consideration on Friday night to take Auburn’s offer.

According to AuburnSports.com, Muschamp, who also received interest from South Carolina and Texas A&M, is expected to earn “approximately $1.5 million per season,” making him one of the highest-paid assistants in the country. Muschamp will succeed Ellis Johnson, who was fired a day after the Tigers lost 55-44 to Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

This will be Muschamp’s second stint as Auburn’s defensive coordinator. Previously, he led the Tigers’ defense in 2006 and 2007 under Tommy Tuberville. He then served as defensive coordinator at Texas from 2008-2010 before taking the head job at Florida.

He also was the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator under Nick Saban at LSU from 2001-2004.

Per AuburnSports.com, Malzahn offered Muschamp the position on Dec. 2, but Muschamp “made it clear that he would take at least a week to consider his options.”

Additionally, per AuburnSports.com, Muschamp has “been given authority to assemble his own staff of assistant coaches.”

News sport : Flames Smid leaves game after Penguins Despres makes contact with head (Video)

The Department of Player Safety has been busy lately, no? And if all goes as expected, they'll have another hearing on the horizon, this time with Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman, Simon Despres.

On Friday evening, Calgary defenseman Ladislav Smid chased the puck behind the Penguins' net and chipped it to his right. Sliding to a stop on the edge of his skates, Smid is at an angle. That's when his head meets Despres arm. Despres follows through and lifts off his skates as he makes contact with Smid.

Take a look:

(Additional angles of the hit can be seen here, here, and here.)

Despres was not called for anything on the play. The only penalties that resulted from the hit were for other players going at it. Smid immediately went to the locker room, and did not return to the game due to an 'uower-body injury'.

DoPS references often the 'principle point of contact' when explaining why a hit is suspendable (or not). Despres makes it pretty clear for them. Smid is already in a vulnerable position. Despres does not attempt to pull up, instead he follows through with a check targeted at the head of Smid.

Should Despres face a hearing, it will be his first. He's currently appeared in 26 games this season for Pittsburgh, and has 1 goal and 4 assists with 46 PIMs.

News sport : Doug McDermott to undergo knee surgery, continuing a rough season

Chicago Bulls' Doug McDermott gestures to a teammate during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the New York Knicks, Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, in New York. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) One of the most high-profile rookies in the class of 2014 is headed for an extended stay on the sidelines. Given the way his season has gone, though, it might be for the best.

The Chicago Bulls announced Friday that rookie forward Doug McDermott will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Saturday. A timetable for his recovery will be determined after the completion of the surgery, but standard rehabilitation would seem to suggest four-to-six weeks on the shelf. McDermott had missed the team's four games prior to Friday's home game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Bulls obtained McDermott, a three-time All-American and 2014 National Player of the Year, in a draft-night trade after the Denver Nuggets made him the 11th-overall pick. While he may have been expected to contribute scoring and shooting to the squad, McDermott has struggled significantly, averaging 3.2 points at 42.3 percent shooting with a PER of 4.0. Most rookies can plan on undergoing an adjustment period, but McDermott probably didn't figure his biggest moment would come when he tried to join a photo he wasn't invited to.

From one vantage, McDermott's surgery is yet another incident in a season that has gone about as poorly as possible. From another, though, it could be for the best, a chance to restart the season and work on readying himself for NBA competition apart from the disappointment of minimal playing time and on-court challenges. It's hard to say that this is good news for the one-time (and maybe future?) Dougie McBuckets, but it's possible to see a silver lining. McDermott needs to find that positivity wherever he can get it.

News sport : Bowling Green DL Jhalil Croley arrested for drug trafficking

Bowling Green defensive lineman Jhalil-Nashid Croley kneels during the closing seconds of the Mid-American Conference championship NCAA college football game against Northern Illinois in Detroit, Friday, Dec. 5, 2014. Northern Illinois defeated Bowling Green 51-17. (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio) Police were called to the residence of Bowling Green defensive lineman Jhalil Croley Thursday after a complaint of loud music, but officers found more than just loud music when arriving at the scene.

According to BCSN, officers “detected an odor of marijuana” and asked to enter the off-campus apartment of the 6-foot-2, 270-pound Croley. After Croley allowed police to enter, officers found “marijuana packaged for sale as well as scales and other paraphernalia.”

Croley was charged with aggravated trafficking in drugs and suspended from the team. Additionally, when attempting to arrest Croley, police said he refused to be handcuffed. Deputy Chief Tony Hetrick said that it took “more than one officer to take him down.” That led to a resisting arrest charge.

“We were made aware by the local authorities and understand the current situation,” Bowling Green athletic director Chris Kingston said in a statement. “It is disappointing to hear about this charge, and we will not tolerate that type of activity in any of our programs.”

In addition to his suspension, Kingston said that Croley will not attend the team’s bowl game – the Camellia Bowl against South Alabama – in Montgomery, Ala., on December 20.

In 12 games, including one start, Croley registered 16 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

News sport : Cardinals' Drew Stanton has sprained ACL, MCL; surgery not needed

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton has a sprained ACL and MCL, which he suffered against the St. Louis Rams, and could return at some point this season.

Stanton does not need surgery and is considered week to week. Arians said Stanton needs rest and rehab, which is extremely good news considering how much pain he appeared to be in after being sacked by the Rams' Aaron Donald. Stanton was unable to put weight on his right leg after the play, left the game and didn't return.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2M Week 15 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 17,475 teams paid]

The Cardinals won their 11th game Thursday night and appear poised to make the playoffs, but they need to protect the division with the Seattle Seahawks — the Cardinals' Week 16 opponent — breathing down their necks.

Arians said the team is in the process of making the decision who will replace Stanton. Ryan Lindley replaced Stanton against the Rams, completing 4-of-10 passes for 30 yards in the win, over rookie Logan Thomas.

The Cardinals have played four quarterbacks this season now, following two injuries to starter Carson Palmer, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. Thomas completed 1-of-8 passes with an 81-yard touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos this season in his only action. Lindley was cut at the end of training camp and re-signed to the roster in Week 11 after Palmer was placed on injured reserve.

Arians said the team could add a quarterback to the roster, but more likely it would be someone on the practice squad. And no, Cardinals fans, Kurt Warner is not coming back to Arizona.

Stanton is on crutches and is also very unlikely, per Arians, to suit up against the Seahawks. Stanton tore his ACL in his rookie season with the Detroit Lions back in 2007, landing on injured reserve and missing the entire year. He also tore his ACL while covering a punt — seriously — as a freshman at Michigan State back in the bowl game against Nebraska following the 2003 season.

Arians left the door open for Stanton to return at some point, and if the Cardinals fail to win the West they'd be guaranteed to play on the opening weekend of the playoffs — on either Jan. 3 or 4.

Suarez hates racist, cheater label

Luis Suarez remains angry about being labelled a “racist” and a “cheat” in England.

|||

Barcelona - Luis Suarez is unconcerned at being overshadowed by Lionel Messi's scoring feats at Barcelona but remains angry about being labelled a “racist” and a “cheat” in England.

The former Liverpool striker has made more an impact with his assists since returning from a biting ban at the end of October while Messi has become the top scorer in La Liga and Champions League history.

“I have always been a goal scorer but I also like to help set up goals,” Suarez told the Catalan newspaper Sport.

“I came here to score goals and not provide passes. I came because I had scored a lot of goals in the my career and above all at Liverpool but fortunately I have more to my game than just that.

“We don't just play for Messi but for everyone. We have players that we know can make the difference like Messi, Neymar and (Andres) Iniesta. They are players that give you confidence when they have the ball at their feet.”

Suarez said it was easy to play with Messi.

“I am having a great time here. Obviously I want to score more goals but while the team is doing well then there is no problem. It is fantastic to play alongside the best player in the world,” the Uruguayan added.

“On his own and with his skill he has ended all the doubts over the team and him.”

Suarez, however, is unhappy at the way he was treated in England and the eight-match ban he received at Liverpool for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

“For now I have to accept that I was accused of being a racist without any proof over what happened with Evra,” added Suarez.

“Also of being a diver and throwing myself on the ground. It is lies.” – Reuters

News sport : Wyoming safety Xavier Lewis suffers stroke, driven to hospital by teammate

Nov 1, 2014; Fresno, CA, USA; Wyoming Cowboys running back Joshua Tapscott (32) is congratulated by free safety Xavier Lewis (18) after scoring a touchdown against the Fresno State Bulldogs in the fourth quarter at Bulldog Stadium. The Cowboys defeated the Bulldogs 45-17. (Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports) Wyoming tight end Eric Nzeocha may have saved a teammate’s life on Wednesday night.

Nzeocha’s roommate, Cowboys safety Xavier Lewis, was having a stroke and Nzeocha was able to recognize the symptoms and drive Lewis to the hospital.

“Not only did (Nzeocha) notice what was wrong, he knew what to ask him,” Lewis’ father, Quentin Lewis, told the Casper Star-Tribune. “He asked him to talk. He asked him to try to write something down. He couldn’t do it. He took him to the hospital. He took him himself.”

After originally being taken by Nzeocha to Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, Lewis was “life-flighted to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado, where he arrived and was admitted on midnight Thursday.”

Quentin Lewis said his son is “resting and recovering.”

“It’s a work in progress. We’ve got a lot of faith as a family,” Lewis said. “We’ve all bonded together, and Xavier’s coming through it. He’s progressing fast.”

Several of Lewis’ teammates and coaches have called to offer well wishes. Wideout Justin Berger even made the trip to Colorado to visit his teammate in the hospital.

Quentin Lewis said he’s “really appreciative” of the support from the program, but is most appreciative of Nzeocha.

“Eric Nzeocha saved him,” Quentin Lewis said. “You have to give him the most accolades ever. The kids that have now stood behind Xavier, to me as a parent, that’s the best thing in the world.”

The 6-foot, 195-pound Lewis has registered 23 tackles in two seasons with the Cowboys while Nzeocha caught eight passes for 65 yards this season. Wyoming went 4-8 this season.

News sport : Revisiting Kobe Bryant's battles with Michael Jordan

For two similarly-styled combatants, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant could really never get on track when it came to an on-court rivalry.

Bryant, who is set to likely overtake Jordan for third place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list on either Friday or Sunday evening, missed out on Jordan’s prime years while working his way to that high school diploma. When Jordan retired for the second time in early 1999, Bryant wasn’t even a starter yet on his Los Angeles Lakers. When Jordan returned to the NBA nearly three years later, Bryant was in his absolute prime, while Jordan was working through various injuries in from ages 38-40 before retiring again.

While we never really got a chance to see them go at it at their absolute best, this doesn’t mean when their respective teams met that we didn’t get some good shows. Let’s look back at all eight of them.

The Classic

Bryant’s first trip to Chicago as a pro saw the 18-year-old seeing precious little time off the bench. With Nick Van Exel, Eddie Jones and Shaquille O’Neal manning the scoring duties, Bryant played just 10 minutes in the eventual Lakers loss. He took five shots and scored five points, hardly registering in the contest’s final outcome. Jordan, meanwhile, struggled against Jones – MJ missed 22 of 32 shots on his way toward 30 points.

That doesn’t mean this wasn’t a fantastic contest.

In Shaq’s first game against the Bulls following Chicago’s four-game dismissal of O’Neal’s Orlando Magic team the previous postseason, he helped give the Lakers an 18-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Bulls finally got their act together around Toni Kukoc, who scored 31 points in the contest – many of them on O’Neal. The Bulls roared back to force overtime, and when the final frame set in, so did Randy Brown:

Chicago won by a 129-123 score.

The Wait

Though Bryant won the Dunk Contest and nearly won the Rookie Game MVP at that year’s All-Star Weekend, he was still very much a prodigy in waiting behind an All-Star in Eddie Jones. When Chicago traveled to Los Angeles for Bryant and Jordan’s second meeting during Kobe’s rookie year, Bryant again barely played – working just 13 minutes in garbage time, missing five of seven shots and finishing with five points.

Chicago’s defense was mostly garbage on that day, struggling to defend Elden Campbell in the pick and roll as the big man finished with 34 points. Jordan worked 40 minutes despite the one-sided loss, scoring 27 points on 24 shots.

Los Angeles won, 106-90.

The Awakening

Bryant was becoming a phenomenon in his second pro season, still coming off the bench but creating all manner of trade rumors (some even involving Scottie Pippen) surrounding Eddie Jones, as the eventual pairing of Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal became more and more obvious. Chicago was still the champs, however, and it would eventually wait out the Shaq-less Lakers and take the win.

Not before Jordan and Bryant gave us perhaps their best back and forth. Do watch:

It’s true that quite a few of Jordan’s 36 points came on Eddie Jones, and that most of Bryant’s 33 points came after Jordan set to the bench in Chicago’s blowout win, but the two took some cracks at each other. Even from an early age, Bryant’s footwork was obvious. He discussed as much recently with CBS Sports’ Ken Berger:

"I think a lot of people saw the highlights of him, the dunks or the fancy layups. But as a kid, I saw more than that. I saw how he got there," Bryant told CBSSports.com. "I saw footwork. I saw spacing. I saw how to use screens. That's what I saw. That's what's different from a lot of kids who came up during my era. They saw the highlights, but I saw how he got to those highlights."

Bryant even had the chutzpah to ask Jordan a question about low post footwork during a break in action at midcourt, as the Lakers lined up for free throws, and Jordan didn’t hold back in his tutorial. With the Bulls safely ahead late in the contest, Jordan sat on the bench to ice his knees alongside an injured Scottie Pippen. With Bryant dunking away during his showcase time, Jordan leaned over to Pippen to pick his brain. “Could we jump like that,” Jordan asked his teammate, “when we were that young?”

Chicago won, 104-83.

The Last One, We Thought

When Chicago visited Los Angeles later in 1997-98 it was more or less assumed that this was Jordan’s last NBA season, and with his obvious heir apparent in Bryant lining up again for the Lakers, most (and especially NBC) hoped it would get a thriller and eventual torch passing to showcase to viewers.

It wasn’t to be. In a reversal from the teams’ meeting earlier in the season, a weary Bulls team was demolished by the Lakers in another one-sided affair. Both Jordan (31 points on 26 shots) and Bryant (20 points on 16 shots) got their licks in, but this was another case of two ships passing in the night.

Los Angeles won, 112-87.

The Return

Oddly, NBA schedule makers waited all the way until February to pit the un-retired Jordan against Bryant during the 2001-02 season. Kobe had won two championships by this point utilizing a very Jordan-esque style of play, and this no doubt unnerved a player in MJ that felt that he wasn’t able to go out on his own terms following his sixth title in 1998.

(Even though he really, really should have accepted those terms.)

By this point in the season, the Washington Wizards-era Jordan had pretty much established himself. He remained a savvy player as he neared his 39th birthday, but a low-efficiency one that mainly relied on line-drive jumpers to typically score about what he scored in this Wizards loss – 22 points on 20 shots.

Bryant put together an absolutely marvelous game. His 23 points on 20 shots was rather Wizards-era Jordan-esque, but he also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished 15 assists.

The defending champs won going away, 104-93.

The Sad One

By the time Los Angeles made it out to Washington toward the end of 2001-02, Jordan’s comeback had more or less proved a failure. Jordan was working through knee injuries, and his sub-.500 Wizards were squarely out of the playoff race even in a terrible Eastern Conference. Bryant, meanwhile, was gearing up for his final championship season with Shaquille O’Neal, and hardly needed to press himself in the easy Lakers win.

An ailing Jordan came off the bench to miss four of five shots in 12 minutes, while Bryant paced himself on his way to 14 points and six assists.

Los Angeles won, 113-93.

The Actual Good Game

The November 2002 contest between the Wizards and Lakers was the only real competitive contest of the lot, and in a lot of ways the strangest.

To start, Jordan didn’t start. Nursing knee injuries, he came off the bench for Washington but still managed to compile 25 points on efficient (especially for him, at age 39) 9-14 shooting in 30 minutes. Kobe did not fare as well from the field, missing 13 of 21 shots, but he did make all 11 of his free throws on his way to 27 points.

In the waning seconds of the close game, however, Kobe and MJ declined to try to out-shoot each other on the way to the win. Instead, they acted as decoys as Robert Horry and then Jerry Stackhouse nailed the game’s final shots. Watch:

Washington won by a 100-99 score.

The Demolishment

It truly isn’t fair what Kobe Bryant did to Michael Jordan and the Washington Wizards in the last meeting (we think) between Jordan and Bryant as players, but that’s what MJ signed up for. If you want to come back after three seasons off to play as a 40-year-old swingman, some 24-year-old superstar is going to take it to you.

Kobe, scoring 55 points on only 29 shots, truly took it to him:

OK, Kobe Bryant didn’t really take him to Jordan directly – Jerry Stackhouse and Tyronn Lue spent most of the game guarding him – but that’s sort of the point. In-prime Michael Jordan (who scored 23 points on 20 shots) would have demanded the defensive assignment against the Kobester, but sadly we never got to see Jordan and Bryant working in their primes at the same time.

Los Angeles won, 108-94.

There truly never were any fair pitched battles between the two, because asking an 18-year-old or a 40-year-old to compete at top level is the height of insanity. With that in place, we still have YouTube …

… and we’ll always have memories of Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. Two raving lunatic competitors that could really score the basketball.

News sport : Urban Meyer's wife's hair caught on fire celebrating her birthday (Photo)

It's been a big week for Shelley Meyer, the wife of Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. Over the weekend, she cried tears of joy after the Buckeyes were selected for the College Football Playoff. And as she celebrated her 50th birthday, her hair caught on fire while she was blowing out the candles.

Thankfully, the fire was quickly noticed and extinguished and Shelley was having some fun with it on Twitter.

Maybe Urban will break out a "run like your hair's on fire" line to one of his players during practice preparations before facing Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. (OK, yeah, that was a bad joke.)

Like many football coaches, Urban can have a laserlike focus on football – he left Florida for both family and health reasons. And it appears it's rubbed off on Shelley too. This close up shows just how focused she was on getting those candles extinguished while her hair was burning. If you have long hair and are celebrating a birthday by blowing out birthday candles, this is a good reminder to keep it back.

News sport : North Carolina reportedly fires associate head coach for defense Vic Koenning

North Carolina has reportedly parted ways with Vic Koenning, who was the team's associate head coach for defense.

Sources confirmed the news to TarHeelIllustrated.com.

North Carolina finished the season 6-6 and had a four-game losing streak after starting the season 2-0 and the defense struggled throughout the season. The Tar Heels' defense was ranked No. 115 nationally in total defense.

North Carolina gave up almost 496 yards per game and 467 points in 12 games, a school record for points allowed. During the four-game losing streak, the Tar Heels gave up 70 points to East Carolina, 50 points to Clemson and 50 points to Notre Dame. The other game, a loss to Virginia Tech, saw the Hokies rack up 34 points. Tech's total against North Carolina was the third-most points it had scored all season.

Koenning was the head coach at Wyoming from 2000-2002 and served as Illinois' interim head coach at the end of the 2011 season after Ron Zook was fired. While he served as North Carolina's associate head coach for defense and coached the team's safeties, Dan Disch was North Carolina's defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach.

News sport : Dak Prescott involved in lawsuit with merchandise vendor who used his likeness

Nov 29, 2014; Oxford, MS, USA; Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott (15) throws the ball against the Mississippi Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The Rebels won 31-17. (Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports) Mississippi State star quarterback Dak Prescott is involved in a lawsuit with a merchandise vendor who sold t-shirts using Prescott’s likeness without his consent. The case has been filed in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court against clothing designer Christian Matthew for printing and selling “Dak Attack” and “Dak Dynasty” t-shirts.

MSU spokesman Sid Salter confirmed the lawsuit, which was first reported by WCBI, to the Clarion Ledger and said the school is not involved.

“The university believes it’s appropriate for Dak to defend himself and protect his rights as an individual,” Salter said.

Salter told the Ledger that Prescott’s lawyer, who was hired via the NCAA Opportunity Fund, “filed numerous cease and desist notices with the clothing outfitter,” but they were all ignored.

Because of his knowledge of the shirts with his likeness, Prescott could have faced eligibility issues if he did not pursue a lawsuit.

From the Ledger:

The T-shirt violates NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.2 Use of Student-Athlete's Name or Picture without Knowledge or Permission. The bylaw states:"If a student-athlete's name or picture appears on commercial items (e.g., T-shirts, sweatshirts, serving trays, playing cards, posters) or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete's knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or the institution acting on behalf of the student-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. Such steps are not required in cases in which a student-athlete's photograph is sold by an individual or agency (e.g., private photographer, news agency) for private use."

Prescott will finish his junior season in the Bulldogs’ Orange Bowl matchup against Georgia Tech on Dec. 31. Prescott has said that he would consider leaving for the NFL Draft if he is projected as a high-round selection. If he plans to return to school for this senior year, it looks like he’ll have to get this taken care of before the 2015 season begins.
