Schurrle happy at Chelsea

Andre Schurrle has dismissed any suggestion he might leave Chelsea during the January transfer window after overcoming a long-standing illness.

|||

London – Andre Schurrle has dismissed any suggestion he might leave Chelsea during the January transfer window after overcoming a long-standing illness.

Schurrle first felt the effects of a virus in Brazil during Germany's successful World Cup campaign but the winger believes he is now nearing a return to full fitness ahead of Hull's visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

And after being used largely as a fringe player by Blues boss Jose Mourinho, the former Bayer Leverkusen star is keen to re-establish himself as a central figure after scoring in Wednesday's 3-1 Champions League victory over Sporting Lisbon.

Schurrle's pace and clinical finishing should add another dimension to Chelsea's attack as the Premier League leaders attempt to consolidate their position at the top of the table after suffering a first defeat of the season at Newcastle last week.

“The illness has lasted weeks and weeks. Even during the World Cup my body didn't feel that good,” Schurrle told Standard Sport.

“I don't want to say what the medical name for the illness was but the symptoms are hard to get over.

“While they may have gone away, it took a toll on my body and it takes lot of time to get back to match fitness.

“The first weeks of the season with Chelsea were actually very good, very positive. I scored against Burnley and the following games were good, too.

“But then my body just shut down a little bit, because I was tired and maybe a little bit in my head and mind as well.

“I did not feel really well. On the pitch I tried to work harder but I needed more time.

“I'm not where I want to be but I feel better and you could see I was very motivated against Sporting.”

Restating his intention to remain at Stamford Bridge despite reports linking him with a move, Schurrle added: “Of course I can just laugh all the talk of leaving off. I am not going to change the club in the transfer window.

“I am happy where I am, I am happy in London. I love the city, I love the fans.

“We have a great team and want to win something this season. This is where I belong and where I want to help. I know what the manager wants for me and that he likes me.”

Hull travel to the Bridge without a win in their past eight matches and Steve Bruce is enduring the most challenging spell of his two-and-a-half-year tenure as manager.

Despite their poor start to the season, in which the Tigers have won just twice in the league, Bruce remains confident his team are capable of securing their highest league finish.

After winning promotion in 2013, Hull finished 16th in the Premier League last season Ä the highest in the club's history.

After spending close to £40 million ($62.8 million) on new players in the close-season, Bruce believes that position will be bettered.

“I'm still convinced we'll finish higher than we did last year,” Bruce said.

“When we got up, my aim was to establish us over four or five years. You're going to come against difficult runs. The bottom eight are separated by two or three points.

“We're all in the same boat. You've got to get yourself out of it and I still think we're better equipped than we were last year in terms of the squad.”

Hull will be without Mohamed Diame, who is recovering from a knee injury, and long-term absentee Robert Snodgrass.

Bruce is expected to pair first-choice strikers Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez for the first time since October 4, when Hull beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in their most recent victory. – Sapa-AFP

St Etienne supporters hurt in Kiev

St Etienne supporters were hurt in a mass brawl with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk fans following the Ukrainian side's 1-0 Europa League victory in Kiev.

|||

Kieve - St Etienne supporters were hurt in a mass brawl with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk fans following the Ukrainian side's 1-0 Europa League victory in Kiev on Thursday, local media reported.

Several of the French club's supporters were taken to hospital with knife wounds, while others were treated for minor injuries after they burnt the Ukrainian flag, the local Hromadske television station reported.

Several Dnipro fans were detained by police, it said.

Dnipro reached the last 32 as Group F runners-up, five points behind Inter Milan, with seven points from six games.

“There was a fight between the French and Ukrainian supporters at Prorizna Street in Kiev,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying on www.hromadske.tv.

“There were a lot of wounded people, with knife cuts and bruises from bats. I also heard at least 10-12 gunshots.”

Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, said in a statement on his Facebook page: “Two French fans were hospitalized with head injuries.

“Those French supporters inopportunely were caught in the heat of the moment. And our hooligans will be accusing the French men, no matter who started the fight.”

Earlier this season Dnipro fans attacked supporters of Danish club FC Copenhagen in a Champions League qualifier.

In July Uefa ordered Dnipro to play matches in Kiev - 354 km to the north west - amid safety conrcerns over staging matches in the conflict-torn east of Ukraine. – Reuters

News sport : Larry Fitzgerald becomes youngest ever to catch 900 passes

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught the 900th reception of his career — the youngest player in NFL to do so.

He just had to wait a bit for it.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2M Week 15 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 17,475 teams paid]

Fitzgerald appeared to catch pass No. 900 in the first quarter on a 27-yard pass from Drew Stanton, but the play was wiped out because of a hold on Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein.

Instead, Fitzgerald hit the mark on a second quarter pass from Stanton, coverting a third down with a 16-yard catch.

With that grab, Fitzgerald, 31, became the youngest player in NFL history by more than a year to reach the 900-catch plateau, breaking the previous mark of the Houston Texans' Andre Johnson, who was 32 when he reached 900. On the next play, Fitzgerald caught pass No. 901.

Fitzgerald ranks 18th all time on the league's receptions list, more than 600 behind leader Jerry Rice (1,549). Only four active players are ahead of Fitzgerald on the list — Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Anquan Boldin and Jason Witten.

Only nine NFL players ever have caught 1,000 or more in their careers.

Sevilla’s Europa challenge on track

There were plenty of goals but few surprises as the group stage of the Europa League wound down.

|||

London - Holders Sevilla maintained their Europa League challenge with a 1-0 win over Rijeka in a winner-takes-all clash on Thursday as the competition's arduous group stage wound down with a glut of goals but few surprises.

German sides Borussia Moenchengladbach and VfL Wolfsburg plus Spanish outfit Villarreal were among the 10 teams who added their names to Monday's draw for the last 32 when the competition usually cranks into a more entertaining gear.

Sevilla's hopes of successfully defending their title, after a mixed group stage campaign, hinged on them avoiding defeat at home to Croatian side Riejka, whose own aspirations depended on securing a shock away win.

The Spanish side have struggled to rekindle their devastating Europa League form of last season having made numerous changes to their squad since they beat Benfica on penalties in Turin to lift the trophy in May.

Among their new additions is Denis Suarez, a 20-year-old midfielder on a two-year loan from Barcelona, and he lit up the first half with a superb piece of skill to hand the hosts the lead.

He skipped through a couple of challenges on his way into the area and calmly planted a powerful sidefoot finish into the back of the net.

Sevilla were totally dominant but failed to turn the screw further and allowed their opponents to emerge after the break re-energised with Andrej Kramaric and Zoran Kvrzic forcing smart saves from keeper Beto.

Sevilla, however, managed to see out the match to finish second in Group G behind Dutch former European champions Feyenoord.

The evening's most spectacular moment was provided by Borussia Moenchengladbach's Branimir Hrgota who scored a goal reminiscent of Karel Poborsky's stunning chip at Euro '96 to help his side through.

Swede Hrgota scored twice, including an outrageous scooped lob that recalled former Czech international Poborsky's goal against Portugal, in a 3-0 win over FC Zurich that helped the Germans finish top of Group A.

Villarreal followed them into the knockout stages after securing the runners-up spot with a 2-0 win at Apollon Limassol.

Lille came into Matchday Six knowing victory would see them finish in second place above VfL Wolfsburg in Group H, but ended the evening with their tails between their legs after suffering a crushing 3-0 home defeat.

Two second-half strikes from Ricardo Rodriguez, after Vieirinha had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, completed a miserable evening for the hosts who played against 10 men for 35 minutes and missed a second-half penalty.

Torino's passage into the last 32 was eased when hosts FC Copenhagen had Mikael Antonsson and Mathias Jorgensen sent off in the first half of a 5-1 defeat in which they took an early lead through Daniel Amartey.

Two goals from Josef Martinez, a penalty from Amauri and further efforts from Matteo Darmian and Gaston Silva ensured the Italians finished second in Group B, behind Club Bruges who won 2-1 at home to HJK Helsinki.

Besiktas's home clash with Tottenham Hotspur to decide who finished top of Group C was twice plunged into darkness when the floodlights failed in each half, but the Turkish side won 1-0 thanks to a close-range effort from Cenk Tosun.

Already-qualified Dynamo Moscow finished with a maximum 18 points after a 1-0 win at PSV Eindhoven in Group E, Ukrainian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Swiss outfit Young Boys, French team Guingamp and Danish side Aalborg also made the knockout stage.

There was nothing to play for in Group D but the goals rained down with Salzburg reinforcing their position as group winners with a 5-1 win at home to FC Astra while runners-up Celtic lost 4-3 at Dinamo Zagreb.

The draw for the last 32 on Monday will feature eight teams, including Liverpool and AS Roma, who have dropped into Europe's second tier competition from the Champions League.

News sport : Marcus Mariota wins the Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Awards

College football honored many players on Thursday evening, but the night belonged to Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, who took home more hardware than any player since Cam Newton in 2010.

Mariota was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year and he won the Davey O’Brien and ,Maxwell awards. Newton was the last player to sweep the top player awards and quarterback-centric awards and he went on to claim the Heisman Trophy.

Mariota also was the first Oregon player to win the Davey O’Brien and only the second player from the Pac-12 to win it (Troy Aikman, UCLA).

Winning the Heisman seems an inevitability for Mariota, who had one of the best quarterbacking seasons in recent history. Not only did he lead Oregon to the Pac-12 title and a place in the inaugural College Football Playoff, he did so by leading the nation in passing efficiency (185.2), quarterback rating (91.8) and yards per pass attempt (10.0 avg). He led all Pac-12 quarterbacks with 636 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns and threw for 3,783 yards, 38 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Mariota, so far, has thrown a touchdown in every collegiate game he’s played.

But Mariota wasn’t the only Heisman contender to make history. Receiver Amari Cooper became the first Alabama player to win the Biletnikoff Award, which is handed out to the nation’s best receiver.

Running back Melvin Gordon, the third Heisman finalist, took home the Doak Walker as the nation’s best running back.

The Heisman will be awarded on Saturday and all signs point to Mariota as the runaway winner. If that’s the case, he becomes the fifth straight player to win the Davey O’Brien and the Heisman and the seventh quarterback in the past eight seasons.

Here are the other player who took home hardware Thursday evening:

Home Depot (coach of the year): Gary Patterson, TCU

Walter Camp Award (player of the year): Marcus Mariota, Oregon

Maxwell Award (outstanding player): Marcus Mariota, Oregon

Davey O'Brien (best quarterback): Marcus Mariota, Oregon

Doak Walker (best running back): Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin

Thorpe (best defensive back): Gerod Holliman, Louisville

Bednarik (defensive player of the year): Scooby Wright, Arizona

Johnny Unitas Golden Arm (outstanding senior): Marcus Mariota, Oregon

Biletnikoff (best receiver): Amari Cooper, Alabama

John Mackey (best tight end): Nick O’Leary, Florida State

Outland (best interior lineman): Brandon Scherff, Iowa

Lombardi (best lineman): Scooby Wright, Arizona

Rimington Trophy (best center): Reese Dismukes, Auburn

Bronko Nagurski (best defensive player): Scooby Wright, Arizona

Butkus (best linebacker): Eric Kendricks, UCLA

Ted Hendricks (best defensive end): Nate Orchard, Utah

Lou Groza (best placekicker): Brad Craddock, Maryland

Ray Guy (best punter): Tom Hackett, Utah

Campbell Trophy (top-scholar athlete): David Helton, Duke

Broyles (top assistant coach): Tom Herman, Ohio State

Disney Spirit Award (most inspiration player): Sterling Shepard, Oklahoma

News sport : LeBron James out for Cavs' Thursday clash with Thunder, Durant

Dec 8, 2014; Brooklyn, NY, USA; Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James (23) reacts during the game against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center. (Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports) Any contest between the two top players in a sport demands attention. While the various matchups between LeBron James and Kevin Durant haven't been quite as epic as desired, Thursday night's game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder — nationally televised on TNT — stood out as one of the most anticipated fixtures on the league schedule when it was released this summer. With Durant recently returned from an injury that kept him out of the regular season's first six weeks, it looked like a nice early test for each superstar and team.

Unfortunately, we are not going to get our wish, because LeBron has been ruled out of the game at Chesapeake Energy Arena due to a sore knee:

The Thunder and Cavs have one more game this regular season, scheduled for January 25 in Cleveland. Here's hoping everyone is in good health for that one.

As noted by Ethan Skolnick of Bleacher Report, head coach David Blatt has chosen to start reserve guard/sparkplug Matthew Dellavedova in his place. With James in street clothes, expect Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love to serve as the strong focus of the Cavs' offense.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein has more on the Cavs' decision to hold out the most talented player in basketball:

It's good news that James doesn't appear to be in serious discomfort, but this is obviously a disappointment for anyone who likes a high-profile matchup of two incredibly special athletes. The bright side is that Durant, Irving, Love, and Russell Westbrook still lend the matchup plenty of star power.

Plus, if LeBron is able to suit up on Friday, then we'll see him play against New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis, an early MVP candidate and a favorite of anyone with League Pass. That would be a pretty nice consolation prize.

News sport : Air Force coach Troy Calhoun says four-team playoff is 'un-American'

Nov 21, 2014; San Diego, CA, USA; Air Force Falcons head coach Troy Calhoun reacts against the San Diego State Aztecs during the third quarter at Qualcomm Stadium. (Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports) Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun has never been afraid to voice his opinion. When asked about the four-team College Football Playoff, Calhoun, who prefers an eight or 16-team model, did not disappoint.

“There’s no doubt that it’s all set up for five conferences, as it is,” Calhoun said per the Colorado Springs Gazette. “You’ve got to be in one of those five conferences. It’s un-American, bottom line. We live in a country where upward mobility is possible, where games should be played out on the field.”

Among Calhoun’s issues with the current format is the emphasis on strength of schedule.

“What about (national champion) Texas Western (basketball) in 1966, should we take that away because their strength of schedule wasn’t one of the four best at that time?” Calhoun said.

When it comes to the bowl system however, Calhoun is all for it. Ever since he took over the program in 2007, he made it clear that qualifying for a bowl game is a top priority. This year, the 9-3 Falcons will head to Boise, Idaho, to face 8-4 Western Michigan in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 20.

Calhoun will take his team anywhere for a bowl game to reap the benefits of an extra game and 15 extra practice sessions. Even Siberia.

“If we had to go to Siberia, OK, to play the Leningrad Stalins or the Leningrad Rooksies, we’d go do it,” Calhoun said.

Alrighty then, coach.

News sport : Kobe Bryant calls his Lakers 'soft,' yells at his GM over lacking teammates

Players throw temper tantrums in practice all the time. Practices often contain dressing-downs from coaches, which can raise tempers, and scrimmages can get heated. It’s a contentious atmosphere for even the most even-keeled and successful outfits.

The Los Angeles Lakers are not successful, nor are they even-keeled. They’re a poorly constructed team that many think was cobbled together in order to tank the season so as to hang onto the rights to their 2015 NBA draft pick. The problem with this set is that the Lakers still boast Kobe Bryant, the league’s highest-paid player and leading scorer. He’s in his twilight years and could retire in 19 months, and the dude wants to win now.

On Thursday, in full view of assembled media, Kobe appeared to lose his you-know-what after practice:

With media and the team’s general manager there. Yikes.

Kobe Bryant loves playing the martyr nearly as much as he loves winning ballgames, so it was expected that the Kobester could ride out another tough Laker year as the league’s most worried-about player. All it takes is one 30-foot shot from Nick Young, a clang from Robert Sacre or a missed defensive rotation from Carlos Boozer for us to feel sorry for the guy. Even if he is shooting 39 percent and playing terrible defense of his own.

Bryant is just 31 points away from overtaking Michael Jordan for the third spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, with the Lakers set to play the San Antonio Spurs on Friday. This should be a time to celebrate his accomplishments, and instead we’re wondering about the relative worth of his teammates and whether or not the Lakers should lose every game on purpose.

I’d put the over/under on Kobe field goal attempts at around 50 for Friday night, and the champion Spurs will happily watch Bryant toss ‘em up.

News sport : Jim Mora says Alamo Bowl will be Brett Hundley's last game at UCLA

In his pre-Alamo Bowl press conference on Wednesday, UCLA coach Jim Mora confirmed what Brett Hundley said after beating USC in November. Hundley will be declaring for the 2015 NFL draft.

"This will be his last game as a UCLA Bruin," Mora said via BruinSportsReport.com. "He will be entering the NFL draft. I don’t know that he’s announced it yet, but we all know that’s the case. I’d like him to go out with a successful game."

Following the win over the Trojans, Hundley told Jim Rome that it was "probably" his last game against the Bruins' cross-town rival.

As a redshirt sophomore last season, Hundley had the option of declaring for the draft or returning to school to attempt to improve his draft stock. He chose the latter and if Oregon's Marcus Mariota declares for the draft, Hundley could be the second quarterback chosen depending on how Florida State's Jameis Winston is graded if he declares.

Hundley hurt a finger on his throwing hand during UCLA's regular-season-ending loss to Stanford on November 29. However, Mora said Wednesday that Hundley was "fine." UCLA plays Kansas State in the Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 26 Casey Mears

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Casey Mears

NASCAR Experience: Over 400 starts in 12 Sprint Cup Series seasons. Once won at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2007. Bet you can't name who finished second in that race. Or third. Or fourth. It may be the best top-five of any Sprint Cup Series race over the last 10 years.

Most recent team: Germain Racing

Most recent season finish: 26th

2014 accomplishments: Scored a fourth-place finish at Daytona in July. Finished 10th in the Daytona 500 and 10th at Talladega in the fall. Highest non-restrictor plate finish was a 12th-place finish at Pocono in August.

Most memorable moment: Martinsville. But it's because the race ruined a streak dating back to Talladega in the fall of 2013 without a DNF. A crash at Martinsville meant a 37th-place finish.

This was a not-getting-punched category, right?

Strengths: Restrictor plate racing and the ability keep a car in once piece.

2015 goals: Continue to utilize the alliance with Richard Childress Racing and beat Furniture Row Racing and JTG-Daugherty Racing in the standings.

FTM's Take: Mears has settled in to a nice place in the Cup Series. Granted, he won't ever fulfilly the star potential that some might have seen when he was at Hendrick Motorsports, but a solid ride with a funded team that has an alliance isn't terrible, right? We know how finicky restrictor plate luck can be, so after finishing no lower than 14th last year at a plate race Mears could easily finish below 30th in every race in 2015. But if it's a skill, that lottery ticket could turn into a win.

Previous reviews: No. 27 Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 28, Danica Patrick, No. 29, Justin Allgaier, No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman

News sport : Mel Kiper says Auburn's Nick Marshall could be 4th or 5th round pick as a DB

Nov 29, 2014; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Auburn Tigers quarterback Nick Marshall (14) throws the ball in the first quarter against the Alabama Crimson Tide at Bryant-Denny Stadium. (John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports) If Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall wants to make it to the NFL, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper thinks he needs to change positions.

Kiper said Marshall, who played his first year of college ball at Georgia as a defensive back, projects as a fourth or fifth round draft choice as a cornerback or safety. A lot of athletic, running college quarterbacks in Marshall’s mold often end up playing wide receiver as a professional, but Kiper thinks defense could be Marshall’s best bet.

“You project (running quarterbacks) to wide receiver, some move to running back, or that safety spot,” Kiper said Thursday per Al.com. “For Nick Marshall, that’s a possibility. I could see him in the fourth round, fifth-round pick as a DB.”

In his two seasons at Auburn, Marshall has thrown for 4,291 yards, 32 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while running for 1,848 yards and 23 scores. His completion percentage improved slightly from 59.4 to 60.1 percent from his junior to senior season, but Kiper thinks the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Marshall has a better chance to succeed as a defensive player.

Kiper said the toughness Marshall’s showcased as a runner shows that he could potentially make the transition back to defense.

“You can see the toughness when he’s running with the football, the athleticism, the feet,” Kiper said. “To me, it’s something you’ll look at and say, OK, there’s been some guys who’ve made the move to safety.”

Marshall acknowledged last month that he’d be willing to make the change if it helps him make an NFL roster, though he still prefers to play quarterback.

“It’s just something I have to think about,” Marshall said. “As of right now, I’m open to play anything, but I’m looking to play quarterback.”

Marshall led the Tigers to an 8-4 record this season and will close out his college career against Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1.

News sport : Cam Newton on crash: 'soMEone is supposed to be dead or severely injured'

If you saw the photos of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton's truck, which flipped multiple times after a collision in Charlotte, you had to wonder how Newton came away from it with just some fractures in the transverse process of his back. The cab of his truck was crushed. You had to think he was lucky to be alive.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2M Week 15 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 17,475 teams paid]

Newton thought the same.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, his first comments since the accident, Newton expresses his gratitude for being alive after the accident and how it has already changed his outlook on life (the full text of his message is below):

I do not know where to begin because by the look of that picture soMEone is supposed to be dead or severely injured worse than what I am right now! While I am resting up the thought that keeps flashing in my mind is that GOD IS GOOD and someone has there protective hands on my life shielding me from any danger that may come my way! I know one thing, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF "IF" you are holding a grudge against someone, "IF" you don't tell the people that's close and dear to you that "YOU LOVE THEM" every chance you get, "IF" your mad because something didn't go your way today! L1FE IS TO SHORT FOR YOU NOT TO APPRECIATE IT TO THE FULLNESS; THROUGH THE GOOD AND THE BAD! I thank you to the people who have been keeping me in there prayers and well wishes for a speedy recovery! I am appreciative for the many great things GOD has given me to be thankful for. It's a old cliché statement but it says "GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS!" And as that crash constantly plays back in my mind every time I close my eyes, I can't go another day without me THANKING GOD for the opportunities he has given me in my life and this accident puts ALOT of things in perspective of what's important and what's not! SHAMEonYOU if YOU go another second in life with holding a grudge or HATING on someone, taking life for granted, or just not appreciating the breath you just breathed; trust and believe there are plenty people with illnesses, people in the hospital, or even people that are 6ft under the earth that W1SH they had "another"opportunity to do so! So if you read this I challenge you to L1VE life to the fullness everyday! 1OVE the people who are close to you (and don't be afraid to tell them as well)! FORG1VE "whoever" for "whatever" they did! Trust when I tell you that L1FE is to short for you NOT to do those things! #THANKyouJESUSforALLOWINGmeTOseeANOTHERday

L1VE-1OVE-FORG1VE=HAPP1NESS

There is a message in there for most of us to take to heart, and thankfully Newton is still able to deliver that message.

(Getty Images) Mat Latos has been traded to the Miami Marlins, we know that now. The deal has been confirmed, announced and sent all around the Internet as fact. But like most trades in the Twitter age, this one started with rumors and whispers.

You think keeping up with all that stuff is tough for fans? Imagine being the wife of the player in question. Dallas Latos, Mat's wife, who blogs and is very open on Twitter, gave us a frantic glimpse into what it's like being on her end of trade rumors Thursday morning.

As the talk ramped up and the Cincinnati Reds swung a deal to send Mat to Miami, Dallas was watching it all play out just like thousands of baseball fans.

Her tweets tell the story:

And then the trade was confirmed:

Well, on the plus side, Dallas, you're moving to Miami and it's beautiful there. Now, if you could just convince Twitter to pack all your things for you.

News sport : The 2nd Annual Dr. Saturday College Football Awards

College football hands out most of its awards this week, but we here at Dr. Saturday thought we’d hand out some awards of our own.

It’s been a busy season with a lot of twists and turns, so it’s only fitting that we celebrate the best and the worst of the 2014-15 campaign.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Graham Watson head Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

There’s not much to say about Mariota that hasn’t already been said. He finished the year completing 68.3 percent of his passes for 3,783 yards, 38 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has flirted with being the best player in college football for the past couple years and this year he finally reached the summit. He’ll likely be the Heisman winner and he has his team in the College Football Playoff. Since this likely will be his last collegiate season, it’s not a bad way to leave.

Nick Bromberg Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

Not only has Mariota been the best player on the offensive side of the football, he's been the best player in college football. But is there any reason to convince you of this? Special mention goes to J.T. Barrett for his emergence in Ohio State's offense and the 45 total touchdowns he accounted for that set an Ohio State record. If Barrett hadn't broken his ankle against Michigan, he's likely heading to New York to finish behind Mariota in the Heisman balloting.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Scooby Wright, LB, Arizona

One of the best moments of Wright’s season (at least for me) was when he stripped the ball from Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota to seal an improbable upset. Wright is a major reason why the Wildcats were playing for the Pac-12 title despite being picked to finish fourth in the South Division.

Scooby Wright, LB, Arizona

Wright's stats are insane, especially relative to the rest of his Arizona teammates. He has 89 solo tackles (153 total), 14 sacks and 28 tackles for a loss. William Parks is second on the team with 13 tackles for loss. No other Arizona player has more than four sacks. Wright is undoubtedly the focal point for opposing offensive coaches and he still can't be stopped.

COACH OF THE YEAR

P.J. Fleck, Western Michigan

If you don’t know who P.J. Fleck is, it’s time to get acquainted because he’s quickly becoming the hot name in college coaching. In just two seasons, he turned Western Michigan from a 1-11 Mid-American Conference cellar dweller to an 8-4 contender in the MAC West. Western Michigan had not won eight games since winning nine in 2008. If he’s able to make Western Michigan a division or conference winner, he could find himself in the hunt for a major job.

Gary Patterson, TCU

This one is pretty chalk, too. Patterson gets the nod not only because of his team's performance this season but because of his willingness to change his team's offense before the season began. Knowing his team needed a spark, Sonny Cumbie and Doug Meacham became TCU's co-offensive coordinators and with Trevone Boykin at quarterback, TCU had one of the best offenses in the country. Patterson's bold approach paid off in 2014. Now we'll see if it's sustainable.

GAME OF THE YEAR

Western Kentucky 67, Marshall 66, Nov. 28

Another off-the-beaten-path pick here because a lot of people didn’t see this game, but it was one that ruined Marshall’s undefeated and likely elevated WKU quarterback Brandon Doughty to the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year over Marshall’s Rakeem Cato. WKU jumped out to a 42-28 lead, but Marshall crawled back and tied the game at 59 with 39 seconds remaining. In overtime, Marshall scored the first TD, WKU matched it and then completed the two-point conversion for the win. The 133 combined points were the third-highest total in the FBS over the last 10 seasons. This one was exciting from beginning to end.

Baylor 61, TCU 58

Not only would this game stand alone as one of the best in 2014, it provided us with the top talking point of the rest of the season. The game featured over 1,250 yards of offense and a 21-point Baylor comeback that began with a Devin Chafin TD run with just under 11 minutes to go and ended with a Chris Callahan 28-yard field goal that went through the uprights as time expired. Just think if one of the game's participants had made the playoff?

BIGGEST SURPRISE

Ohio State

This might have been the most difficult category to pick because teams such as Georgia Tech, TCU and Georgia Southern all deserved a nod here. But in the end, Ohio State’s ability to capture the Big Ten title and earn a spot in the College Football Playoff with its third-string QB is what put them over the top. The Buckeyes were pretty much left for dead after QB Braxton Miller went down and they lost to Virginia Tech, but coach Urban Meyer rallied his team and they played amazing football. Winning the Big Ten title with second and third-string QBs was just a testament to the Buckeye’s recruiting and development. It’s difficult to argue with this pick.

Missouri

Fresh off an SEC East Division title, the Tigers were picked to be in the bottom half of the East in 2014 because of the losses of Kony Ealy and Michael Sam and multiple key members of its offense. The departure of Ealy and Sam were offset by Markus Golden and SEC Defensive Player of the Year Shane Ray and while Missouri's offense looked downright impotent at times, the Tigers' defense was fantastic again and pushed Mizzou to a second-straight SEC East title. Think Missouri will be undervalued again in 2015?

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

South Carolina

When a giant banner of coach Steve Spurrier was placed outside of Williams-Brice Stadium, Spurrier made a comment that people would start throwing eggs at it if the season started to slide. At the time, no one could have predicted just how bad the Gamecocks would be. They started the season getting blown out by what we later learned was a mediocre Texas A&M team and things didn’t get much better with losses to teams such as Kentucky, Tennessee and ultimately rival Clemson. The 6-6 record — after being picked to run away with the SEC East — was the worst for the Gamecocks since going 6-6 in 2007.

Oklahoma

Yes, the loss of Trevor Knight against Baylor was a big one, but Knight was injured after Baylor had a big lead against the Sooners in Norman and he quarterbacked Oklahoma's loss at home to Kansas State. Add in the crazy loss to Oklahoma State (who wants to bet Bob Stoops won't re-punt on a similar running-into-the-kicker penalty in the future?), the Sooners had lost three games at home for the first time since 1997. So much for being extremely reactionary and thinking Oklahoma's Sugar Bowl win over Alabama was a sign of 2014 greatness.

MOST TIMELY FIRING

June Jones, SMU

OK, OK, June Jones resigned from SMU and wasn't fired, but it was time for him to go regardless. He noted in a radio interview earlier this week that he had contemplated leaving in 2013 and then thought about leaving in June and August. His heart was no longer in the SMU job and it was clear in the way the team played. While SMU only won one game this year, the Mustangs were much better off without Jones at the helm, and their future under newly-named coach Chad Morris looks very bright.

Florida, Will Muschamp

Yes, Muschamp coached the final two games of the year, but the decision to cut ties with Muschamp in mid-November gave Florida a leg up on Nebraska, Michigan and now Wisconsin in terms of an official coaching search. And when athletic director Jeremy Foley identified his target in Colorado State's Jim McElwain, he went and got him, even if it took some buyout hassling. And for Muschamp, it was a timely move too. He was able to quickly figure out what teams wanted his services as a defensive coordinator if he plans on coaching in 2015.

FIRING THAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED

Norm Chow, Hawaii

Is there a more apathetic program in the country than Hawaii? It was just seven years ago that it completed an undefeated regular season, was playing in the Sugar Bowl and boasted a Heisman-worthy quarterback. But in the past few years it's been seemingly content with mediocrity. Chow has done nothing during his time on the Island. He’s 8-29 and there’s nothing that suggests the team is getting any better. I know the school is having money problems and that might be why its content with keeping Chow instead of bidding for a new coach, but the program isn’t going to make financial progress if it continues losing.

South Florida, Willie Taggart

Is Taggart heading into a make-or-break season in 2015? After the season, USF got rid of both coordinators and Taggart is going to have his third offensive coordinator in three seasons in 2015. In two seasons at South Florida, Taggart's teams are a combined 6-18. While a coach should get three or more seasons to see what he can do at a school, the frequent turnover in such a short time frame makes you wonder if this arrangement is going to work out at USF.

BEST STORY

Minnesota’s Jerry Kill

A year ago, Minnesota coach Jerry Kill missed the bulk of the season while dealing with seizures. But he got his seizures under control and came back this season to make the Gophers a contender in Big Ten West. Minnesota was one game away from playing for a conference title, which is amazing considering it was picked to finish fifth in the Big Ten West. And for his efforts, Kill was named Big Ten Coach of Year. It’s quite the turnaround story.

A raccoon selfie goes wrong

Stop typing the angry emails and read this entire paragraph, animal lovers. The story of Jack Gangwish's raccoon selfie isn't the pick here because of the raccoon's ultimate fate. It's because we still can't get over the fact that Gangwish apparently decided that it'd be a great idea to pull over and take a picture with a raccoon. It's absolutely ridiculously funny — as long as Gangwish doesn't have rabies. And the whole episode got PETA to write a letter to Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst, which seems totally unnecessary. Plus, Gangwish posted this at the beginning of the season.

BEST SPECIAL UNIFORMS

Texas A&M’s 1939 throwbacks

We’ve seen a lot of throwbacks, but what put these over the top for me were the helmets that were made to look like the leather helmets of old. The old-timey brown shoes also were a nice touch. Adidas definitely tried to get as authentic as possible for these throwbacks. Unfortunately for Texas A&M, the replica didn’t bring the Aggies the undefeated season the 1939 team had.

Texas Tech's masked toreador helmets

This is a two-part Texas Tech post. In the best category are these awesome special edition lids.

WORST SPECIAL UNIFORMS

Northwestern’s Gothics

These uniforms, which were supposed to be pay homage to the architecture on the Northwestern campus, might have been some of the worst uniforms I’ve seen in some time and that’s saying something with Maryland constantly trying to construct the ugliest uniforms on Earth. The weird Gothic writing combined with the akward arch on the back of the helmet was incredibly underwhelming and a waste of a good special uniform.

Texas Tech's Lone Star uniforms

And here's the worst entry for Texas Tech. Just... no. No. The blue and the black don't work together.

News sport : Barry Alvarez will reportedly coach Wisconsin in Outback Bowl

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez speaks during a press conference in the UW Field House media room near Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis., Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014. Head football coach Gary Andersen announced Wednesday he was leaving to become the coach at Oregon State. (AP Photo/Wisconsin State Journal, M.P. King) A day after Gary Andersen’s surprising departure from Wisconsin to Oregon State, Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez was left to wonder who would coach the team in the Outback Bowl.

On Thursday he found the answer: himself.

Sound familiar?

Alvarez, the Badgers’ coach from 1990-2005, manned the sideline for the 2012 Rose Bowl (which UW lost 20-14 to Stanford) after Bret Bielema accepted Arkansas’ head coaching position. Under similar circumstances, the 67-year-old Alvarez will do it again when UW takes on Auburn on New Year’s Day in Tampa, Fla., according to ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit.

Alvarez, who also is a member of the College Football Playoff selection committee, took over as University athletic director while still assuming the head coaching position in 2004. He stepped aside after the 2005 season (culminating with a win over Auburn in the Capital One Bowl) and promoted Bielema, his defensive coordinator.

When Bielema left, Alvarez hired Andersen away from Utah State prior to the 2013 season. In two seasons at the helm, Andersen led the Badgers to a 19-7 record, but dropped the Big Ten title game 59-0 to Ohio State on Saturday.

Alvarez said Tuesday that he was “very surprised” by Andersen’s sudden departure. He also revealed that the team’s seniors asked him to coach the game against Auburn. Now, it appears that he will honor their wishes.
