News sport : UAB faculty senate approves draft of 'no-confidence' resolution against president

UAB President Ray Watts had a draft of a resolution of a 'no-confidence' vote approved against him by UAB's faculty senate on Tuesday in the wake of the decision to cut the football program after the 2014 season.

The symbolic resolution, according to ABC 33/40, was approved with a two-thirds majority. And before the vote by the faculty senate, a statement written by Watts was read. In it, he said that he regretted the way the school handled its recent cost-cutting decisions and the announcement of them.

In addition to cutting football, UAB also cut the bowling and rifle programs. When announcing the decision to disband the football team, Watts said the school would have to invest $49 million over the next five years into the program.

From ABC 33/40:

Faculty Senate Dr. Chad Epps says a vote of no confidence is one of the most powerful statements a faculty can make. He also says this move goes beyond the decision to end football, and that it's all about shared governance rather than a dictatorship.

The faculty senate met behind closed doors in executive committee for more than an hour. They decided to draft two resolutions to bring to the entire faculty. One resolution is "no confidence" in President Ray Watts.

"One of the things we considered in our executive session was the fact that to consider a vote of no confidence even causes some damage to a university where we're trying to repair some damage,' said Epps. “So the potential exists that we could have some negative effects from this. We thought about that very hard.”

The other resolution "would request a more transparent re-evaluation of the athletics program" and "that could include reinstating football."

Both resolutions, upon their completion, will be sent to each faculty member before the faculty senate convenes for a special vote in January.

Despite finishing 6-6 in 2014, UAB did not receive a bowl berth on Sunday.

News sport : David Cutcliffe reportedly turned down Michigan job

Was Duke coach David Cutcliffe approached by Michigan about the Wolverines' coaching job?

According to NFL.com's Gil Brandt, Cutcliffe was offered the job by Michigan and turned it down.

Cutcliffe, 60, has been at Duke since 2008. After four losing seasons, Cutcliffe's Blue Devils are heading to a third-straight bowl game in 2014 in the Sun Bowl against Arizona State. Last year's Duke team entered the ACC Championship Game at 10-2 before losing to Florida State and then Texas A&M in the Peach Bowl.

Before coaching at Duke, Cutcliffe was the head coach at Ole Miss from 1999-2004. He coached Eli Manning at Ole Miss and was Tennessee's offensive coordinator when Peyton Manning played with the Volunteers.

If Cutcliffe did spurn the Wolverines, it's possible he simply didn't want to build another program. And yes, Wolverines, there is some building necessary after the last two years of Brady Hoke's reign. Hoke and Michigan parted ways last week.

Per TheWolverine.com, the search firm Michigan has hired for the coaching search reached out to LSU coach Les Miles to "gauge his interest." However, Miles isn't atop the list for the Wolverines. San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh also continues to be mentioned as a candidate for the job.

Bafana to face giants in Afcon adventure

The Cape Argus takes a closer look at Bafana’s opponents at next year’s African Cup of Nations.

|||

Bafana bafana are in Group C of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. It has been designated as the Group of Death.

With Algeria, Ghana and Senegal as opponents, South Africa need to be at their best to survive this group, and advance to the knockout stages.

ALGERIA

Nickname: Desert Foxes

Nations Cup best: Champions in 1990

World Cup qualification: 1982, 1986, 2010 and 2014

Coach: Christian Gourcuff

The 59-year-old French coach has had spells at Lorient, Le Mans and Stade Rennais before assuming control of the Algerian national squad.

Known as a shrewd tactician, with an emphasis on attacking football, Gourcuff has brought discipline and organisation to the technically gifted Algerian players.

Football pedigree also clearly runs in the family as the coach’s son, Yoan, is an influential midfielder at top French side Lyon, and represented his country at the 2010 World Cup.

Strengths

The attack-minded north Africans demonstrated the positive nature of their football by accumulating 15 points during their Afcon qualifying campaign, which was the highest tally of all the countries involved. Blessed with an array of tactically-astute and quick-passing midfielders – most notably Nabil Bentaleb of Tottenham Hotspur and Porto’s Yacine Brahimi – Algeria will be difficult to peg back during the continental showpiece.

With an exciting flexible style of football, based on typical European strengths, the Desert Foxes are adept at pressing high up on the pitch and then striking back on the counter with ruthless efficiency. Teams looking to beat them will do well to look at their lack of pace in defence.

Player to watch

Sofiane Feghouli, pictured left, is the man who makes Algeria tick. The Valencia attacking midfielder had a fantastic World Cup in Brazil last year – and he will again be an influential presence when the north Africans begin their campaign in Equatorial Guinea.

Clever on the ball, sharp, superb touch and with an eye for goal, if Feghouli’s on top of his game, expect the Algerians to be among the favourites to go all the way.

GHANA

Nickname: Black Stars

Nations Cup best: Champions in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982

World Cup qualification: 2006, 2010 and 2014

Coach: Avram Grant

The former Chelsea manager recently took charge of Ghana’s national squad and he is looking to make an immediate impression with Afcon success next year.

Israeli Grant’s tenure at Chelsea was in the aftermath of Jose Mourinho’s departure in September 2007. He led the London club to the Champions League final and the League Cup final.

After Chelsea, he had spells at Portsmouth and West Ham, before moving to Partizan Belgrade, in Serbia.

The 59-year-old’s first move with Ghana has been to open talks with out-of-favour stars Sully Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The duo were sent home from last year’s World Cup in Brazil for disciplinary reasons – and Grant wants to repair the damage and bring the duo back for Afcon.

Strengths

Ghana’s physicality has always been their greatest strength. However, in addition to the powerful physique of their footballers, they also have finesse and great technique on the ball.

Added to this, is the impressive pace, power and stamina of their overall game, which makes the west African nation among the favourites to be crowned African champions again.

In midfield, they rely on the consistent Michael Essien and the creative touch of Andre Ayew, while, in attack, captain Asamoah Gyan remains the main source of goals.

Player to watch

Kwadwo Asamoah, pictured left, has been rated among the 30 best footballers in the world.

The Juventus utility man – he can play in central midfield, left-midfield or left-back – has already won two Serie A titles with the Italian club.

With outstanding technical skills and an intuitive tactical awareness, Asamoah will be the man Ghana look to in pursuit of winning the continental crown for the fifth time.

SENEGAL

Nickname: Lions of Teranga

Nations Cup best: Runners-up in 2002

World Cup qualification: 2002

Coach: Alain Giresse

The 62-year-old Frenchman has the difficult task of trying to emulate the late Bruno Metsu’s influence on Senegalese football. But he definitely has the football nous, having been a top player for his country.

He played at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, and played in midfield alongside legendary men like Michel Platini and Jean Tigana.

Metsu, known as the “White Sorcerer”, died of cancer two years ago, but is fondly remembered for the success he achieved with the west African nation. In the 2002 World Cup, under Metsu, Senegal caused a huge shock when beating world champions France – and going on to a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

It is this legacy that Giresse is tasked with continuing. Having coached the national teams of Mali and Gabon, the Frenchman has experience on the continent, and his main priority is to, again, ensure that Senegal become a close-knit, mentally strong unit. If Giresse can achieve this, the Senegalese will have belief, and they will be capable of beating almost any team in the world, as demonstrated in 2002.

Strengths

Like Ghana, it’s the west African physical strength and power that dominates in Senegalese football. However, when the Lions of Teranga are at their best, it’s the other assets of their game that make them a force to be reckoned with. They work extremely hard and they have a boundless energy which is capable of overwhelming opponents.

For Afcon, though, Senegal are holding thumbs that their most influential player – captain Mohamed Diame – will be available. The player, who has been in great form for Hull City, is currently out with a knee injury and is in a race against time to be passed fit.

Player to watch

If you watched English Premier League leaders Chelsea being beaten for the first time this season by Newcastle, then you will know that both the winning side’s goals were scored by Senegal’s Papiss Demba Cisse, pictured left.

The 29-year-old destroyed Jose Mourinho’s hopes of going the season unbeaten, and on display in that game was his remarkable instinct for goal.

He’s always in the right place at the right time. At Afcon next year, and especially in this Group C, which is likely to be tight and tense, it will come down to the men who score goals. And Cisse certainly knows how to do that. - Cape Argus

A time to see old friends… and beat ’em

Wits host Ajax Cape Town in Braamfontein in an Absa Premiership clash that will mark a mini-reunion of sorts.

|||

Wits host Ajax Cape Town in Braamfontein tonight in an Absa Premiership clash that will mark a mini-reunion of sorts.

Roger de Sa returns to the venue he has called home for many years on two separate occasions eager to lead the Urban Warriors from the Mother City to victory over a Bidvest Wits side teeming with players who owe their professional success to some time spent at Ajax.

Gavin Hunt, the Wits coach who hails from Cape Town, can call on no less than three former Ajax stars to get his team a rare second successive league victory in a season that has been so up and down it must have club boss Brian Joffee suffering some dizzy spells.

Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs, who is sure to start in goal, played at Ajax and has worked closely with De Sa as well as briefly at Orlando Pirates.

Defender Thulani Tyson Hlatshwayo spent the majority of his career at Ajax and only joined the Clever Boys this season.

Sahmeeg Doutie cut his professional teeth at the Urban Warriors and is now one of Hunt’s key players having played at Pirates as well as SuperSport United.

The trio will want to send their former team back to the coast empty-handed while their ex-teammates would love nothing more than to have the last laugh against them in their own backyard.

Tied on 23 points with a similar goal-difference and positioned third and fourth on the table respectively, Wits and Ajax – like the rest of the Premiership – continue to nurse hopes that leaders Kaizer Chiefs come a cropper sometime soon.

But they also know only too well that it won’t help their cause in any way should they continue to stutter like they have been when Amakhosi dropped points in draws.

And that will add some spark to tonight’s clash – the desire to grab maximum points being that much important in the battle to stop Amakhosi from making the championship race a one-horse parade.

Hunt, whose team won 1-0 away to Bloemfontein Celtic at the weekend, will have impressed on his players the importance of putting together a good run instead of the stop-starts they’ve been having.

Only once have the Clever Boys been victorious in the league in successive matches, Wits beating Free State Stars and MP Black Aces on November 22 and 26. After those victories, Wits were brought down to earth with a thud when Kaizer Chiefs hammered them 3-0.

That they picked themselves up to win at Celtic should give Hunt confidence as they welcome Ajax.

De Sa’s team have not been that inconsistent, having actually been top of the table early on in the season when they actually won the first three matches.

One of those was a 3-1 beating of the self same Wits in Cape Town in which nathan Paulse completed a brace and Keegan Dolly added the other strike.

A repeat of that win and De Sa could well be on his way to destroying the generally held notion that he is only good at getting his teams to a flying start but always fails to pep them up in the second round.

Like Wits, Ajax’s last win was against Celtic but they have not won any of their two matches this month – the Capetonians having drawn with both Moroka Swallows (1-1) and SuperSport United (0-0).

Any such results tonight – for both sides – and the championship dream that is already beginning to look just that could take on the status of a hallucination.

For if they are to remain in the challenge, then nothing short of victory will do. And for that to happen the camaraderie of the reunion will have to be reserved for pre- and post-match. - The Star

News sport : Reminder: The Cubs won the 2015 World Series in 'Back to the Future 2'

Great Scott! Or maybe we should make that ... Great Jon!

The Chicago Cubs agreed to sign Jon Lester for $155 million on Tuesday night, adding to their deep pool of young prospects. People on the North Side will definitely be excited about the Cubs' chances to compete for the playoffs. While it might be entirely too early to be thinking about the Cubs winning the World Series in 2015, The Stew at least feels obligated to remind everyone that the Cubs won the 2015 World Series in "Back to the Future 2."

Besides creating another piece of Internet content about the future as told in "Back to the Future 2,"what good is this information? What does it have to do with the actual Cubs from MLB? Nothing ... or maybe everything.

Note: The Cubs traded for catcher Miguel Montero on Tuesday. He just happens to have the same initials as Marty McFly, the main character in the "Back to the Future" movies. And new Cubs manager Joe Maddon, well, the comparisons to BTTF's Doc Brown are obvious, right? They're both mad scientists.

(Getty Images)

If you're a Cubs fan and the Lester signing has your pumped up about the Cubs' chances in 2015 and this "Back to the Future" tidbit has amused you, then we'll point out one more thing. The glorious nature of the Internet has made it so you can buy a "Cubs 2015 Cubs World Series Champions" T-shirt with the "Back to the Future" font.

(Red Bubble)

If Joe Maddon were really as smart as people say, he'll have a box full of these to hand out to players in Spring Training.

Aguero out for up to six weeks

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini gave the club's fans some welcome news when he announced injured Argentinian Sergio Aguero could be back some time in the New Year.

|||

Rome – Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini gave the club's fans some welcome news when he announced injured Argentinian Sergio Aguero could be back some time in the New Year.

Aguero was expected to spend several months on the sidelines after injuring ligaments in his knee in the second minute of a 1-0

win over Everton last weekend.

But Pellegrini, speaking in Rome ahead of his side's Champions League Group E decider against Roma on Wednesday, said: “He will be out for four to six weeks. It depends on how he recovers.

“But our team does not depend on one player.”

If confirmed, the news will be welcomed by City after some reports claimed Aguero could be out for the rest of the season.

With 14 goals, the Argentinian is the Premier League's top scorer and his treble in a shock 3-2 win over Bayern Munich a fortnight ago relaunched City's flagging campaign.

Roma need to beat City to book their last 16 ticket, but can also qualify with a draw as long as CSKA draw away to Bayern.

Thanks to their 1-1 draw at City in September, Roma can also go through with a scoreless draw against City, but only as long as CSKA lose to Bayern.

A win would see City through to the last 16 but any other result would see Pellegrini's side depending on results elsewhere.

Pellegrini added: “It is an important game. We have a good squad. We have made mistakes in the other games but we are fighting to qualify.

“I always expected a difficult group. I never expected easy games to play.

“If we can (win) against Bayern Munich, we can do it again tomorrow.” – Sapa-AFP

Reds not good enough - Gerrard

Steven Gerrard admitted Liverpool were ‘not good enough’ as they crashed out of the Champions League at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard admitted Liverpool were ‘not good enough’ as they crashed out of the Champions League at Anfield.

The Liverpool skipper scored a superb free-kick equaliser with nine minutes left after Basle star Fabian Frei had put the Swiss side ahead in the 25th minute.

But despite laying siege to the Basle goal in the closing minutes, Brendan Rodgers’ team, down to 10 men after substitute Lazar Markovic was sent off in the 60th minute, could not score the second goal that would have put them through to the last 16.

Gerrard said: ‘I don’t think that we deserved better. We have not gone out because of this performance. We weren’t good enough away to Basle and we let in a silly goal away to Ludogorets. You qualify over six games and we have not been good enough.’

Rodgers upbeat despite CL flop

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers took an upbeat view on a dismal night as the five-times European champions were bundled out of the Champions League.

|||

Liverpool - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers took an upbeat view on a dismal night as the five-times European champions were bundled out of the Champions League following a 1-1 draw with FC Basel at Anfield on Tuesday.

Liverpool's cause was not helped when half-time substitute Lazar Markovic was sent off 15 minutes after coming on for flicking his hand in the face of the chasing Behrang Safari who dramatically tumbled to the ground.

That dismissal though could not overshadow a poor performance by Rodgers' men who have made little impact on their return to the competition after a five-year absence.

However, he told ITV Sport afterwards that they could use the disappointment of this season's campaign to get back into the competition and do better next season.

“We have to fight going forward to be in this competition next season. We are not too far off the top four (in the Premier League) and, if we get there, we will be better in it next season.

“The possibility of January signings is something to discuss with the owners, but there was a big investment in the summer.

“We have been unlucky with injuries to key players who are important to the way we play, but that is to take nothing away from the players tonight who have put everything into the game.”

Regarding Markovic's sending off, he said, “I thought it was an awful decision.

“I thought the referee was poor tonight to say the least. Young Markovic has come on and been bright and, although he has put his hand out, it was not a sending off.

“The referee has seen the lad lying on the floor holding his face, but I don't know if he has seen the actual incident.”

Liverpool, whose poor start to the season shows no sign of improving, will now drop into the Europa League.

Fabian Frei put Basel ahead after 25 minutes before a superb free-kick from Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool some hope in the closing stages.

But speaking to ITV Sport afterwards Gerrard admitted: “I still knew after I scored that it was going to be difficult with 10 men and running out of time, but it gave us some hope and, as the manager said, the first half was not good enough and we had to go down fighting.

“I don't think we deserved better. We have not gone out because of this performance, we weren't good enough away to Basel and we let in a silly goal away to Ludogorets. You qualify over six games and we have not been good enough.”

Liverpool must now try and climb the Premier League from the ninth spot they occupy after 15 games. – Reuters

Phelan blames Van Gaal for injuries

Former Manchester United coach Mike Phelan has blamed Louis van Gaal’s fitness regime for the catalogue of injuries at Old Trafford.

|||

Former Manchester United coach Mike Phelan has blamed Louis van Gaal’s fitness regime for the catalogue of injuries at Old Trafford after Chris Smalling became the club’s 43rd casualty of the season.

It is also the third time that Smalling has been sidelined since Van Gaal’s arrival last summer after he limped out of Monday’s win at Southampton with a groin strain.

The England defender will be assessed today but is rated extremely doubtful for Sunday’s game at home to Liverpool.United are also without summer signings Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw, while Rafael and Phil Jones have just returned to training.

Phelan, who spent 12 years alongside Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, believes Van Gaal’s decision to bring in fitness specialist Jos van Dijk to oversee first-team training at the start of the season and give Tony Strudwick a broader role has led to the injury pile-up.

‘What’s happened is a continuation of the same players getting injured all the time, so you have to look at the reasons why,’ said Phelan, who is now first-team coach at Norwich City.

‘Manchester United changed their thoughts on the fitness regime. They looked at it a little bit differently. Tony Strudwick was operating as head of sports science and was involved day to day with the team. He understood the ins and outs of how to keep players fit, how to keep them ready for competition.

‘Then suddenly they moved him sideways and did something completely different. That may have had an effect. That one area has changed.

‘They’ve brought in people with a different way of doing things. The intensity of training may be one thing — it may be too intense, or not intense enough — but obviously slight changes have been made.

‘The squad is big enough at United, because they can get players in, but obviously they keep breaking down and they don’t seem to be getting any better. They seem to get one back and lose another two.’

Smalling went off after just 18 minutes at St Mary’s with what Van Gaal said was a ‘suspected muscle tear’. The problem is understood to be in the player’s groin. The 25-year-old has already been sidelined for two months of the season after a groin strain at Sunderland in August and picking up a thigh injury in training in September just a game into his comeback.

Smalling missed another match through suspension after what Van Gaal called a ‘stupid’ red card in the Manchester derby.

His future at United has been the subject of speculation, with Arsenal ready to swoop.

However, United are unlikely to let any players leave — particularly centre backs — while they are plagued by injuries, and Van Gaal has ruled out trying to solve the problem by buying more players in the January window.

‘(That will not) solve the problem,’ said the United boss. ‘Do we have to buy players? No, we have more than enough.’– Daily Mail

Arsenal win eases pressure on Wenger

Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal's 4-1 thrashing of Galatasaray in the Champions League was exactly what he needed after a traumatic week.

|||

Istanbul – Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal's 4-1 thrashing of Galatasaray in the Champions League was exactly what he needed after a traumatic week.

Just four days ago Wenger had cut a forlorn figure as he hurried onto a club train home from Stoke to avoid the foul-mouthed abuse of fans frustrated by the Gunners' dismal 3-2 defeat at the Britannia Stadium.

Wenger's position was once again the subject of much debate and another disappointing performance in Istanbul on Tuesday would have heaped further pressure on the under-fire Arsenal manager.

But the north Londoners silenced Wenger's critics, for a few days at least, with a vibrant display featuring one of the goals of the season from Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Lukas Podolski's early opener was followed by a brace from Ramsey, including a brilliant 30-yard volley, before Podolski sealed the points in second half stoppage-time after Wesley Sneijder's free-kick reduced the deficit for Galatasaray.

It was exactly the response Wenger needed, even though Arsenal were forced to settle for a second place finish in Group D after Borussia Dortmund got the point they required against Anderlecht to finish top.

“We gave a strong response from the start,” Wenger said. “We looked dangerous every time we won the ball back, we had good penetration, we scored good goals and until half-time I feel we were very strong.

“In the second half we suffered a bit more for two reasons – some players had not enough competitive games and especially I had to take two players off But, overall, it was a strong performance.”

Those midfield changes saw Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini withdrawn with hamstring and calf complaints respectively at half-time.

Wenger explained both were precautionary measures and that they should be fit to face Newcastle at the weekend, which will be a particular relief when it comes to Ramsey.

Ramsey's stunning second goal even led to applause from the notoriously partisan home fans, but Wenger claimed he would have been unhappy with the midfielder's decision to shoot from such a long way out if he had missed.

“Honestly, I felt at the time when he took the decision that it was not the best decision. But he proved me wrong,” Wenger said with a smile.

Wenger was also surprised by the ease with which his side won – at one stage looking like they could get the six-goal margin of victory that would have overhauled leaders Dortmund on goal difference.

“I did not think it was possible at the start of the game, but at half-time yes,” Wenger said.

“But after we were had to take Ramsey and Flamini off, it was too much for us to hope that we could score six.

“We were closer to conceding one or two more in the second half and we defended very well.”

Arsenal's second-place finish means the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris St Germain and defending champions Bayern Munich could now await them in Monday's draw.

That is a daunting prospect for Arsenal, who have failed to progress past the last 16 since 2010, but Wenger preferred to concentrate on the busy Christmas schedule rather than worry about the draw.

“Look, let's wait for the draw, prepare well,” Wenger said. “We can focus now on the Premier League.

“It was my 180th game in Champions League tonight, we won away from home and now 15 consecutive years in the last 16. That, I believe, is an achievement.

“Let's focus on the Premiership until the end of February and the FA Cup as well.” – Sapa-AFP

Chiefs salvage draw against Stars

Kaizer Chiefs and Platinum Stars shared the spoils in their fifth encounter in four months after an action-packed draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

|||

Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs and Platinum Stars shared the spoils in their fifth encounter in four months after an action-packed 2-2 draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Tuesday night.

Chiefs came from behind twice against a determined Stars to salvage the draw and continue undefeated in the league.

Robert Ng'ambi and Eleazar Roger got on the scoresheet for Dikwena while Siphiwe Tshabalala and Tefu Mashamaite got the equalising goals for Chiefs.

In so doing Amakhosi preserved their unbeaten streak in the Premiership with 11 wins and four draws.

Prior to the clash, the two teams had met four times already this season in all competitions.

Chiefs had the better of the opposition on three occasions while Dikwena won on penalties in the Telkom Knockout.

Dikwena displayed impetus from the onset and were rewarded when they punished the Chiefs defence for a lapse in concentration.

Midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane was caught out when Solomon Mathe intercepted the ball and made a quick pass through to Ng'ambi, who chipped over Brilliant Khuzwayo for the opening goal.

Chiefs had early signs of complacency as they appeared too relaxed on the ball unaware of the advancing opposition.

Tsepo Masilela did well to create space between himself and his marker Rofhiwa Tshikovhi and whipped in a cross that fell kindly for Tshabalala in the 16th minute.

Stars striker Ndumiso Mabena did well to lose his defender and unleash a powerful shot that swirled wide of the target in the 24th minute.

Stars midfielder Tintswalo Tshabalala had a quiet game in a more defensive position seemingly in a tactical ploy to thwart Chiefs tricky winger George Lebese.

Dikwena's Mahlatse Makudubela proved a handful for the likes of Morgan Gould in the Chiefs defence with his blistering bursts of pace.

In the 39th minute Mathe played Makudubela through on goal with a overhead pass. The winger blasted the ball on target but Khuzwayo managed to block the shot.

Before the half-time break Dikwena retook the lead with a goal from Rogers.

A loose ball fell kindly for Stars' stand-in captain Thabiso Semenya whose miscued strike wobbled into the box and into the path of Rogers before the referee blew for the interval.

In the second half Amakhosi came out guns blazing after conceding for a second time.

Chiefs mounted some pressure on Stars after an extended period in their half of the field.

In the 62nd minute Mashamaite found the much needed equaliser after a corner-kick from Tshabalala.

The Chiefs attack soon intensified after the equaliser with the defenders encouraged to surge forward for the third goal.

Rightback Siboniso Gaxa took on the Stars defence with a run on the flank but he was tackled and dispossessed by Tshepo Gumede.

Chiefs were unable to get the winning goal after a late surge while Stars absorbed the pressure to share the spoils. – Sapa

Real sets new Spanish record

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti hailed his “extraordinary” players after they set a Spanish record for consecutive victories of 19 thanks to a 4-0 success at home to Ludogorets.

Madrid - Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti hailed his “extraordinary” players after they set a Spanish record for consecutive victories of 19 thanks to a 4-0 success at home to Ludogorets in Champions League Group B.

Real surpassed the previous record they jointly held with Barcelona, who won 18 matches in a row in all competitions between October 2005 and January 2006.

European champions Real last failed to win when they were humbled 2-1 at home by city rivals Atletico Madrid in a La Liga game in September.

“I have an extraordinary group (of players) and I never tire of saying it,” Ancelotti told a news conference after the match at a festive Bernabeu stadium.

“I could not imagine winning 19 games in a row after the defeat to Atletico,” added the Italian, who led Real to a record-extending 10th European crown in 2013-14 in his first season in charge.

“I knew we would fix what had not gone well but not in this way.”

Brazilian side Coritiba hold the overall record for most consecutive wins in all competitions, according to Guinness World Records.

The South Americans won 24 straight games between February and May 2011 spread between the Paranaense state championship and the Brazilian Cup.

Real's 19 wins have come in La Liga (11), the Champions League (six) and the King's Cup (two).

Their latest exploits will fuel expectations the club is set to extend and improve Ancelotti's contract, which runs until the end of next season.

“I have felt a lot of affection from the club and everything is going well and we have to fight to prolong the moment,” Ancelotti said.

“I have a lot of affection for the players and I thank them whenever I can,” added the 55-year-old, a Champions League winners with AC Milan as both player and coach.

Barca hold the record for the most La Liga wins in a row of 16 set under Pep Guardiola in the 2010-11 season.

Real, the current La Liga leaders, can make it 12 straight victories in Spain's top flight when they play at Almeria on Friday before heading to the Club World Cup in Morocco. – Reuters

The Los Angeles Lakers have joined the growing number of athletes protesting the deaths of unarmed black people at the hands of law enforcement. According to the Associated Press, all players on the team except center Robert Sacre (an American citizen raised in Canada) wore black shirts with the phrase "I Can't Breathe" during warmups prior to Tuesday night's home game against the Sacramento Kings at Staples Center. The Lakers followed Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose and members of the Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers, including LeBron James, in wearing the shirts before NBA games.

You can watch video of Kobe Bryant and other Lakers in the shirts here:

"I Can't Breathe" has become a rallying cry following a New York grand jury's decision not to indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in the July 17 death of black Staten Island resident Eric Garner. Pantaleo placed Garner, who suffered from asthma, in a chokehold while placing him under arrest for selling untaxed cigarettes. Video shows Garner saying "I can't breathe" during the encounter that led to his death.

Media members saw the shirts at players' lockers before the beginning of warmups. Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times posted this video from the locker room to Instagram:

The Lakers are certainly not the first athletes to support the fight against police brutality against black Americans, but their sartorial protest. On a very basic level, having all but one player wear the shirt represents the most complete protest by any one team. But it's also the first time that a player who was not black has worn one of the shirts. Point guard Jeremy Lin, the son of Taiwanese immigrants, joined his teammates:

While Rose and James explained their own "I Can't Breathe" shirts as related to family and the experience of growing up around violence, the phrase has an inescapably racial meaning. Garner's death was only the latest in a string of high-profile deaths of black men by police officers and has touched on longstanding questions regarding improper treatment of the black community. When black athletes wear shirts with the first-person slogan, they are aligning themselves with the cause. Like all black Americans, they have encountered some form of racism, however small or ingrained in society, at some point in their lives.

Lin complicates that relationship significantly. Lin has experienced his own forms of racism, most notably via the belief that athletes of Asian heritage can't compete at the highest levels of American sport. Yet that experience is far different from the issues that have compelled the "I Can't Breathe" outcry. Effectively, Lin has worn the short in support of the movement as a broader human issue, or at least to support his teammates as they make a statement about race relations.

This is important because the NBA as an organization has shown little interest in wading into the substance of these protests. As reported by Yahoo's own Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday, commissioner Adam Silver supports players' rights to voice their beliefs but would prefer that they not make changes to their uniforms to do so — in other words, he avoided taking a stand on the issue. One event does not make a trend, but Lin's move at least presents the possibility of people in the NBA crossing racial lines to voice their opinions. If other players follow suit, then it could put pressure on the NBA to look at the Garner protests as a mainstream issue that doesn't have to be defined by the desire not to offend certain demographics.

It is sad that the cause of equal treatment under the law would not be enough to get the league to comment, but such is the state of big-time professional sports. As Jacob Greenberg writes in an excellent piece for The Diss, the NBA and the people who cover it are curiously reluctant to weigh in on issues affecting black Americans given the makeup of the on-court workforce. Players' decision to wear these shirts constitutes some form of progress, but that doesn't mean we can't wonder why that process isn't moving any faster.

News sport : K.J. McDaniels blocked a shot so hard he gave a fan a concussion

Nov 29, 2014; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia 76ers guard K.J. McDaniels (14) reacts to a score against the Dallas Mavericks during the third quarter at Wells Fargo Center. The Mavericks defeated the 76ers 110-103. (Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports) The Philadelphia 76ers have given potential viewers few reasons to tune in so far this season, but the play of rookie forward K.J. McDaniels has been a welcome positive. The 21-year-old Clemson product has combined superior athleticism and effort to become one of the top young highlight-producers in the NBA, chipping in vicious blocks and dunks with regularity. His starts aren't immediately overwhelming — 10.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 25.8 minutes per game with a 13.0 PER — but he looks like someone who will play in this league for a while.

Rob Mahoney profiled the exciting rookie for SI.com, speaking to McDaniels about his approach to his role and how he uses his skills to be such an effective shot-blocker at only 6-6. Among the insights comes the revelation that McDaniels actually injured a fan quite seriously with one of his rejections:

McDaniels, listed at 6-6, is a wing by trade. Yet thus far he ranks 13th in the league in block percentage ... just behind Serge Ibaka, Dwight Howard, and Tim Duncan. If his mark holds over the course of the season, McDaniels would be the most prolific shot blocker at his height in NBA history.

"I used to watch a lot of [Dwyane] Wade and LeBron [James] when they came into the league," McDaniels said. "I used to watch Michael Jordan a lot, too – the way they were versatile in how they defend multiple positions and use their athleticism to block shots. I just figured since I’m athletic and I can jump and have good instincts, I can go up there and get shots as well."

That particular skill has translated brilliantly to the NBA level, where McDaniels succeeds the aforementioned Wade and James as one of the most awesome and surprising help-side shot blockers in the league. The jewel of his rejection résumé might just be the play of the season to date: A complete demolition of a Greivis Vasquez runner, rocketed into the stands at such a violent velocity as to cause actual injury.

"I surprised myself," McDaniels said of the block. "There was a lady who got hit by the ball who got a concussion, I believe." McDaniels, upon hearing what happened, sent flowers.

The play in question took place on November 9 against the Toronto Raptors, and you can watch it here:

You can see McDaniels's concern for the fan in the immediate aftermath of the play. Concussions are serious business, so we hope that the woman's condition has improved with no adverse effects.

We shouldn't treat this incident as a cute example to McDaniels's style of play, but it does help explain what makes him such a thrilling player. Put simply, he plays basketball in a dangerous fashion, throwing down dunks and blocking shots with an intensity that often comes across as violent. He looks like he could injure someone — an opponent, an innocent bystander, or even himself.

That said, there's a difference between playing with a style that suggests injury and actually injuring someone. Here's hoping that this unfortunate series of events doesn't repeat itself any time soon.

Gerrard’s heroics too late to save Liverpool

A stunning free kick by Steven Gerrard evened the score - but Liverpool’s Champions League journey is over.

|||

Liverpool - Liverpool's Champions League challenge ended in a 1-1 draw against FC Basel, who booked their spot in the last 16 on Tuesday after withstanding a late fightback sparked by a stunning Steven Gerrard free kick.

Gerrard curled the ball into the top corner with eight minutes remaining to cancel out Fabian Frei's rasping first-half drive, but the Premier League side, who had been reduced to 10 men following the second half sending off of Lazar Markovic, could not find the crucial winner.

Barring their late flurry, it was a largely a dismal home performance from Liverpool who finished third in Group B on five points, two adrift of second place Basel.

Liverpool, whose poor start to the season shows no sign of improving, will now drop into the less demanding Europa League.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers may have hoped the occasion would spark an improved attacking performance from his struggling side, but within minutes of the kickoff it was very much business as usual as the visitors grabbed the upper hand over their nervy hosts.

It took only 12 minutes for Basel to craft an early sight of goal as Shkelzen Gashi found a pocket of space on the edge of the area but slashed his shot wide.

That proved to be an unheeded warning as Liverpool retreated further into their shell and Basel grew in confidence before taking the lead in stylish fashion on 25 minutes.

After some crisp and careful passing around the edge of the Liverpool area, the ball was touched back to Frei, who flashed a daisy-cutter across the Anfield turf and into the back of Simon Mignolet's net with the Liverpool keeper rooted to the spot.

The match threatened to turn into a horror show for the hosts as Basel spurned further chances with Marco Streller spooning a volley off target and Gashi rippling the net once more with an offside flag sparing Liverpool's blushes.

Rodgers hauled Alberto Moreno and Markovic off the bench in an effort to inject some urgency, but the latter's night lasted just 15 minutes as he was sent off for flicking out his hand and catching the face of Behrang Safari who dramatically tumbled to the ground.

Referee Bjorn Kuipers angered the Liverpool fans further by denying Gerrard a penalty when he tumbled under the challenge of Basel keeper Tomas Vaclik, minutes before the Liverpool midfielder picked his spot superbly with a free kick from the left-hand edge of the area.
