News sport : Jadeveon Clowney in danger of missing start of 2015 season

It wasn't just some minor clean-up knee surgery that ended 2014 No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney's injury-filled and disappointing rookie season.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the knee surgery that put Clowney on injured reserve was microfracture surgery, a significant procedure that has a nine-month recovery period. He had the surgery Monday, which is within a few days of nine months before the start of the 2015 regular season.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2M Week 15 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 17,475 teams paid]

In other words, if Clowney's recovery goes exactly as scheduled he would be ready for Week 1 after missing all of the offseason program, training camp and preseason. And it can't be a guarantee that he'll be ready for the start of next season.

“He had microfracture surgery,” Texans general manager Rick Smith told the Houston Chronicle. “It’s a pretty extensive rehab period. We’re hoping to have him back for the start of the season.

“The original injury he suffered on opening day wasn’t just limited to the lateral meniscus. He also had some cartilage damage, as well.”

Smith said when Clowney hurt his knee in the season opener, the surgery was to clean up the meniscus and cartilage in his right knee, and the team hoped that would be enough. But his knee never got healthy.

Clowney, lauded for his pass-rushing skills coming out of college, had no sacks in four games as a rookie. And now, the deck is stacked against one of the most exciting prospects in many years having a huge impact in his second season, either.

News sport : Enes Kanter fined for throwing mouthguard into stands, which is gross

NBA players exert a lot of energy during games. This isn't especially shocking, but the full effect doesn't really come across on TV. Frankly, the whole scene can be a little disgusting — players covered in sweat, which gets everywhere, all while various attendants and moppers try to mask the scents and residues as best they can. I apologize for presenting such a gross image, but it's the reality of the situation.

Not surprisingly, attending fans often react in horror when they happen to come in direct contact with players in the throes of intense physical competition. It is therefore fairly logical that Utah Jazz big man Enes Kanter has been fined $25,000 for throwing his mouthguard into the stands during Monday night's road loss to the Sacramento Kings. With 4:34 left in the third quarter, Kanter was whistled for a traveling violation. He threw his mouthguard in frustration, earning a technical foul in the process. Take a look:

Look, this is pretty clearly gross. Human mouths are filthy even when theoretically clean, and we have no idea what Kanter ate or drank before this moment. By throwing his mouthguard, he put everyone within throwing distance in danger.

Or maybe not, because the fan who obtained Kanter's mouthguard apparently considered it so valuable that he needed to hold it aloft like a prized catch (via SB Nation):

Kanter's actions are questionable, but this troubles me on a far deeper level. At first, I considered that the fan was holding up the mouthguard so that the proper authorities could take it from him immediately, but that would be an illogical move under the circumstances. If the mouthguard had come into contact with the fan, the sensible move would have been to get it off the body ASAP in a manner similar to that of someone who brushes up against any goop of indeterminate origin. Even if the man caught the mouthguard as a basic reflex, his immediate reaction should have been to throw it on the ground and gesticulate for help in distress.

Given the circumstances, though, we must assume that the fan was either happy to catch Kanter's mouthguard or — the following consideration should probably be tagged NSFW — picked it up off the ground. I demand a full investigation into the matter.

News sport : The 10-man rotation, starring Gregg Popovich; Greek philosopher

A look around the league and the web that covers it. It's also important to note that the rotation order and starting nods aren't always listed in order of importance. That's for you, dear reader, to figure out.

C: Sports.ru. In a fantastically penned personal blog, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Ettore Messina compares Gregg Popovich to the sort of sophists that help shape Western philosophy.

PF: SBNation. John Wall has been absolutely brilliant this season, reminding all of us that Colin Cowherd, once again, is a complete and utter doofus.

SF: Pro Basketball Talk. Why Blake Griffin’s fantastic game-winning shot from Monday evening may mask some deeper, more frustrating Los Angeles Clipper problems.

SG: ESPN. Speaking of Clipper problems, how much are we trusting the check and balance system that Doc Rivers lords over in Los Angeles?

PG: BBallBreakdown.com. On Giannis Antetokounmpo, who still has a long way to go in spite of all of his gorgeous highlights.

Jose weighs up Costa fitness gamble

Jose Mourinho is weighing up whether to risk Diego Costa in their Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon in a bid to improve the Chelsea striker's match fitness.

|||

London – Jose Mourinho is weighing up whether to risk Diego Costa in their Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon in a bid to improve the Chelsea striker's match fitness.

Mourinho's side are already certain to advance to the last 16 of Europe's elite club competition in first place regardless of the result in their final Group G fixture at Stamford Bridge.

With the hectic Christmas schedule looming, it would be little surprise if the Chelsea manager rests several stars, including the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois, when the Portuguese club visit west London.

But Costa may not be given the night off to start his Christmas shopping because Mourinho is concerned the Spain international's recent barren run has been provoked by his constant battles with injury.

While Costa hit the ground running after signing from Atletico Madrid, scoring seven goals in his first four Blues appearances, he has netted only twice in his last seven, having been hampered by persistent hamstring and groin problems.

He was easily subdued by Newcastle's defenders when the Blues suffered their first defeat of the season Ä a 2-1 loss at St James' Park on Saturday.

And although Costa was left out of the Spain squad last month to rest the injuries and was also suspended for last week's victory against Tottenham, Mourinho fears his leading scorer's lack of activity has negatively impacted his performances.

“For me, the problem is not the goals - they will come as a consequence of his condition,” Mourinho said.

“He has to improve his condition. He was injured and had many doubts because he went a long time without training.

“Obviously that must have an effect on a player in the way he runs, the way he moves and in his co-ordination.

“I don't think there is any problem but he has to recover.”

If Mourinho decides to give Costa the start on Wednesday, he will spearhead a much-changed team, with the likes of Petr Cech, Ramires, Loic Remy, Kurt Zouma and Filipe Luis set to feature against a Sporting side who have a two-point lead over third placed Schalke and can qualify for the last 16 with a draw at the Bridge.

Whatever the line-up fielded by Mourinho, Blues goalkeeper Courtois says the frustration of losing for the first time in 24

matches in all competitions should provide more than enough incentive to treat the Sporting game with total commitment.

“There are only difficult games in the Premier League and we know that. The next game is in the Champions League at home and then against Hull, we have to win in front of our fans,” Courtois said.

“Obviously we are disappointed with the result at Newcastle. We tried our best to win this game, and it was a hard game. We were a little bit unlucky.

“At 2-0, it's harder. We tried to fight back, we scored to make it 2-1, but then the ball wouldn't fall right for us and we couldn't draw this game and maybe then win it, so obviously we are disappointed.

“It was a hard game, but we have to stay positive. We are still leaders, but we know these games to be champions you have to win, so from the next game on, we will try our best to win all the games if possible.” – Sapa-AFP

Liverpool can’t just rely on Gerrard

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told his players that Steven Gerrard shouldn't be solely responsible for inspiring another memorable Champions League night at Anfield.

|||

London – Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told his players that Steven Gerrard shouldn't be solely responsible for inspiring another memorable Champions League night at Anfield.

Rodgers' side have to beat Basel on Tuesday to leapfrog the Swiss team in Group B and qualify for the last 16 in a decisive match which has echoes of the time Gerrard dragged Liverpool to victory against Olympiakos in 2004.

The showdown with Basel comes almost exactly 10 years after the epic victory over the Greeks when, with Liverpool needing to win by two clear goals to make the knockout stages, Gerrard fired home a powerful strike with four minutes to go to clinch a 3-1 victory.

It was the beginning of the club's march towards a famous fifth European Cup win in Istanbul against AC Milan, but Rodgers insists the next generation now need to rise to the occasion to share the burden with their influential captain.

“In terms of Steven, we can't be just reliant solely on him, this has to be about a team performance,” Rodgers said on Monday.

“We need other players to step up to the mark, taking on responsibility and being a catalyst and not place it on his shoulders.

“There are few world class players around so when you are in a team that responsibility falls even more so on you but it has never been about that for us.

“For us to get a result tomorrow night we need for the team to be performing well and get a performance.

“This is a competition which has a great history here for Liverpool and the Olympiakos game was a part of that.

“It is an opportunity for the players now to qualify and make sure they write themselves into folklore by winning the game and ensuring they get into the next round - because that is the objective.”

Having fought so hard to get back among Europe's elite after a five-year absence, to crash out in the group stage would be a devastating blow to Rodgers and his players, especially given their struggle to replicate last season's challenge for the Premier League title.

That makes this one of the most important one-off ties of Rodgers' career and the Reds boss says the only time he can remember such a pressure-packed occasion was when he guided former club Swansea to victory over Reading in the 2011 Championship play-off final.

“It is a different competition and different level but the importance is still everything,” Rodgers said.

“It is a game we just want to stay focused on what we have to do.

“The importance of the game is there: to get through and qualify. In my time here we have had games that were deemed as “must win” games and more times than not we have won them.

“We arrive into tomorrow night with great confidence that we can get the job done.”

Having been frustrated by Sunderland in their goalless draw at the weekend Rodgers is preaching patience to both his players and fans as Basel, needing only a draw to qualify, are likely to set up in defensive fashion.

“We need that patience in the game,” he said.

“They (Basle) don't need to win the game, they can sit back, so we need to be able to move the ball side to side with freedom to benefit and if we get patience from the team and the supporters that should help us to go and get the result we want.

“It is a cup competition - the final game - and if we get through we can put it to bed for a few months, and hopefully it will give us that confidence in our league form.” – Sapa-AFP

News sport : Rajon Rondo addresses his benching expertly, as the Celtics figure out what to do with him

Most NBA observers had flipped away from the Washington Wizards/Boston Celtics game on Monday evening, well before it was over. The Wizards, working at home with a team that hopes to contend for a conference championship this season, led by 23 points partway through the third quarter. Boston? They’re not so good to begin with, and they’ve been miserable at closing out contests this season; so there truly was no reason to think that the C’s could outscore Washington by 23 points in the game’s final 17 minutes and end regulation with a tie.

That’s what the Celtics did, though. They came back and tied the darn thing and then they tied the Wizards again in overtime before eventually falling to Washington in double overtime.

And Rajon Rondo watched every second of that comeback from the bench. And he seemed completely fine with as much. Not because Rondo is a lazy sod, but because he understands how this game works. From Jay King at MassLive.com:

"I'm very competitive," [Rondo] said. "I wanted to play. I wanted to compete and be on the floor. But the guys in front of me, the guys who were out there, were playing great. And I didn't want to mess up any momentum."

The guard added: "There was no communication (between him and Stevens) but there was nothing needed. Like I said, the guys did a great job making a run out there. Our bench did a great job tonight and they deserved to play."

Rondo’s honest feelings about his benching seem in slight contrast to how he actually presented himself on the Boston sidelines. The starting point guard was up and cheering as Boston worked through its rally, conferring with similarly-sitting veteran Gerald Wallace, and encouraging Boston rookie guard Marcus Smart. Rajon was smiling throughout, and cheering Smart as he worked through what was easily the best game of his career – Marcus didn’t just light up because of the extra minutes, his timing was on point and he finished the contest with a career-high 23 points and five assists.

Rajon Rondo has struggled this season, to be sure, but he was coming off of the heels of a Jason Kidd-styled triple-double the night before. Working against these same Wizards on Sunday in Boston, Kidd managed 13 points, 11 assists and 13 rebounds, though he miss 12 of the 17 shots he attempted from the floor. Rondo attempted 17 shots (making six) two nights before that against the Lakers, perhaps in reaction to the criticism he has rightfully taken in for not attempting to make himself a threat to score all that often so far in 2014-15 – the first full season since his ACL tear suffered during the early spring of 2013.

It’s exactly this sort of setting – Boston’s second night of a back to back, the team’s fifth game in seven nights – that has Celtics fans a bit worried. Rajon came through with a miserable performance before being benched, missing all three of his shots and turning the ball over three times in nearly 21 minutes, and patience is running thin. Team president Danny Ainge isn’t exactly out to make a playoff run, he’d like another lottery pick (especially after watching Smart and second-year man Kelly Olynyk play fantastic ball in a losing effort on Monday), but Rondo has to show at least a semblance of what he once was.

For one massive, lingering, reason.

The Celtics have to trade Rajon Rondo. They don’t have to work out something next week, when last summer’s free agent signees are finally allowed to be legally offered in a deal, but some asset has to be gathered in return for a free agent to-be that will turn 29 in two months and may not be in Boston’s long term plans moving forward. The coveting of first round picks has evolved to a nearly ridiculous degree as we set to swing into 2015, but if Rondo continues to struggle this badly, no contending or even rebuilding team will want to deal a first round selection for a lacking player who also dominates the ball and reshapes offenses with his unique and often polarizing offensive game.

Because Rajon Rondo is not the sort of dude that you plop into a starting lineup 50-some games into a season.

Dealing for Rajon Rondo isn’t the same as, say, trading for Deron Williams back in 2011. Rondo is not a normal point guard, one you can trust to run a pick and roll and/or flex offense while finding his own 18 points per game along the way. He’ll completely take over your offense in ways that, some eight and a half years after he was drafted, most NBA watchers can’t fully come to a consensus as to whether or not he’s helping or hurting – and this is an NBA champion and four-time All-Star we’re talking about.

His poor play and Marcus Smart’s fantastic plus/minus from Monday night are not telling, Boston eventually lost the game and John Wall had his way in both the half court and transition as Washington held on for the win. Rajon Rondo isn’t washed up, not by a long shot.

What should be counted are Rondo’s 2014-15 struggles, the nearly two-year old ACL tear that still seems to factor into things, and his mercurial way of running the show. Boston el jefe Danny Ainge has no real bargaining advantage as Rondo enters free agency this summer, however. In a lot of ways, a reserve center like Kosta Koufos (also entering free agency) may have more trade deadline pull than someone as unorthodox as Rajon Rondo.

We can appreciate the way he handled his one-night demotion on Monday, though. Rajon Rondo has struggled this season, but as a teammate and leader he came through in spades despite Boston’s tough loss.

What the Celtics need to do, between now and February or July, is figure out just how tough a loss they’ll need to take in when it comes time for Rajon Rondo to eventually leave.

News sport : Mississippi State releases bowl promo set to Miami Vice's opening credits (Video)

There’s a large gap between when bowl matchups are announced and when games are actually played, which, apparently, Mississippi State is using to get creative with its video editing software.

The school’s YouTube channel released a Capital One Orange Bowl promo set to the opening theme of the 80s hit show Miami Vice

And it is something to behold.

The bowl game, which is against Georgia Tech, is being held in Miami.

In honor of Mississippi State’s effort, we decided to get a little creative with Georgia Tech and put coach Paul Johnson in another very popular 80s television show set in Florida.

Unlike Mississippi State going with the fast, hip show of the decade, we thought this program was a little more coach Johnson’s speed.

Thank you for being a friend.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: Justin Allgaier

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Justin Allgaier

NASCAR Experience: Just completed first full season in the Sprint Cup Series after five-plus seasons in the Nationwide Series.

Most recent team: HScott Motorsports

Most recent season finish: 29th

2014 accomplishments: Improved significantly towards the end of the season. Finished inside the top-20 nine times and seven of those finishes happened in the final 16 races of the season. And four came in the last five (participated in) races of the season.

Most memorable moment: Unfortunately, this explains the parenthetical above. Did not qualify at Talladega because of the craziness that also enveloped Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Strengths: Short tracks and road courses. Won at Montreal in 2013 in the Nationwide Series and finished 17th at Watkins Glen in 2014.

2015 goals: Take the improvement from the end of 2014 and translate it to 2015. With Hendrick equipment and a full year of understanding the relationship, a top-20 season should be the goal.

FTM's Take: Is Allgaier's improvement real? Given the Chase, his steps forward were greatly overshadowed but he was clearly much better with experience. If that does carry over to 2015, he may not be a threat for the Chase, but he may not be the lowest-ranked Hendrick powered-and-supplied car either.

Previous reviews: No. 30, David Gilliland, No. 31 Cole Whitt, No. 32 David Ragan, No. 33 Michael Annett, No. 34 Reed Sorenson, No. 35 Alex Bowman

News sport : Urban Meyer's wife 'cried tears of joy' when learning Ohio State made the College Football Playoff

Dec 6, 2014; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer celebrates along with wife Shelley Meyer after the Buckeyes defeated Wisconsin 59-0 at the Big Ten championship at Lucas Oil Stadium. (Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports) The hours between the end of Ohio State’s dominant 59-0 victory over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Saturday night and the announcement of the four College Football Playoff teams on Sunday were stressful for Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer.

Meyer sat in his Dublin, Ohio, living room, operating the remote controller as the 12:45 p.m. ET unveiling approached. When he finally learned the good news, per Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel, who was there with Meyer and his family and friends, Meyer “reflexively jumped out of his chair” and when he landed “his knees buckled, seemingly in disbelief.”

“I kind of melted,” Meyer said.

Meyer then embraced his daughter while his wife “cried tears of joy.”

From SI:

Meyer took one step away from the crowd gathered on the outskirts of his living room before raising his right arm in triumph and enveloping his daughter Nicki in a long embrace. His wife, Shelley, cried tears of joy. Neighbors Jeff and Bonnie Roby stepped forward and popped a $180 bottle of 2004 Dom Pérignon for a celebratory toast, the cork’s explosion coinciding with a merciful decrease of the TV volume. Meyer circled the room and gave everyone a hug, his look a mix of joy and relief. “Wow,” he said at one point. “This is history.”

Not long after, Thamel wrote, the small crowd dispersed and Meyer was back in business mode.

“Time to go to work,” he said. “Exams. Practice schedules. Travel. All of that.”

The Buckeyes will take on top-ranked Alabama on New Year’s Day in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans for the national semifinal.

The winner will move on to face the winner of the Rose Bowl between Florida State and Oregon on January 12 in Arlington, Texas.

News sport : Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton involved in car accident

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a car accident on Tuesday, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Steve Crump at WBTV in Charlotte said that a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department source told him that Newton suffered no major injuries.

Newton's car overturned and he was taken from the scene in an ambulance, after being placed on a stretcher, Jonathan Jones of the Observer said. Crump's report said Newton did not want to be transported to the hospital but was as a precaution.

The Panthers said they are monitoring the situation. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer confirmed to Jones that Newton was driving and said he was able to communicate. Here's another angle of the scene:

The Observer said it was a two-car crash on the Church Street bridge in Charlotte over I-277 at about 12:30 p.m. Eastern time. Mark Becker of WSOC 9 in Charlotte said Newton's truck flipped four times, according to witnesses. Another photo from Jones shows the wrecked truck:

Newton, 25, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn, has become one of the NFL's rising stars. He is a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback who won the NFL's offensive rookie of the year award in 2011.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 30 David Gilliland

Name: David Gilliland

NASCAR Experience: Nine seasons in the Sprint Cup Series, including seven full-time stints. Responsible for the greatest Nationwide Series upset in recent history.

Most recent team: Front Row Motorsports

Most recent season finish: 30th

2014 accomplishments: Scored a pole at Daytona in July. So what if rain canceled the final two rounds of the qualifying session? It's still a pole. Let's not talk about the result of the race, however. Only top 20 of the season came at Pocono. Had a lot of other near-misses outside of the top 20 though.

Most memorable moment: This still counts even if it's referenced above, right?

Strengths: Road courses and restrictor plates. All four career top-five finishes in the Cup Series have come at Sonoma, Talladega and Daytona.

2015 goals: Make start No. 300 and run another full season in the Sprint Cup Series. And grab another top-five finish at a plate track or road course.

FTM's Take: With the rumors of Cole Whitt to Front Row Motorsports, is there room for both Gilliland and Ragan at the team? Gilliland has done an exceptional job of staying in the Cup Series after that 2006 Nationwide win got him a shot in Cup that didn't exactly work out for the best. If he's around in 2015, expect some more of the same.

News sport : Virginia Tech CB Brandon Facyson breaks leg in practice

COLUMBUS, OH - SEPTEMBER 6: Brandon Facyson #31 of the Virginia Tech Hokies celebrates after Virginia Tech upset the Ohio State Buckeyes 35-21 at Ohio Stadium on September 6, 2014 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Jamie Sabau/Getty Images) Virginia Tech cornerback Brandon Facyson burst onto the scene last year and earned third-team All-ACC honors by registering 27 tackles and five interceptions as a true freshman.

His sophomore season has not gone as well.

After missing much of the season with a stress reaction in his left leg, the program announced Monday that Facyson “suffered a tibia and fibula fracture of his left leg” during bowl practice on Sunday. He then underwent surgery on Sunday night and is expected to miss spring practice with a targeted return to the field over the summer.

The stress reaction in his left leg kept the 6-foot-2, 189-pound Facyson out of spring practice. He had surgery in May to help with the healing process and was able to play in the Hokies’ first three games of the season. He then re-aggravated the injury and has not seen the field since.

According to a release from the program, Facyson will pursue a medical hardship waiver for this season. He has not used a redshirt to this point, either.

In the three games Facyson, a Rivals.com three-star recruit in the class of 2013, played this season, he registered six tackles and five pass breakups.

The Hokes, 6-6, will play Cincinnati in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Md., on Dec. 27.

News sport : Nike unveils College Football Playoff uniform changes

Nike supplies the uniforms for all four of the teams in the College Football Playoff and it will be tweaking the duds for all of them.

The biggest change, predictably, is to Oregon's uniforms. Instead of wearing the helmets with wings like it has for most of the season, Oregon will wear the "O" logo on its helmets.

Each school will wear new Nike gloves and cleats. The gloves are Nike's Vapor Jet Knit gloves and "the new knit construction is the next evolution in natural motion glove construction, allowing for full freedom of movement." The Vapor Untouchable cleats will be in each team's colors.

All four teams will also wear new undershirts. Alabama's is designed to look like an elephant's skin. The texturing is composed of "mantras, quotes and team inspirations." Florida State's has a pattern with the Seminole logo at the chest.

Ohio State will wear its Mach Speed uniforms, which feature a different striping pattern on the sleeves. Since Alabama is the home team on January 1, the Buckeyes will be in white. Its undershirt will also be based off a Woody Hayes' chalk board.
