Downs on the up, Bucs battling to find form

If current form is anything to go by, the scales could be titling in favour of Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of their clash against Orlando Pirates.

|||

If current form is anything to go by, the scales could be titling in favour of Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of their league clash against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night.

Pirates have been going through a difficult period with some below par performances while Sundowns have been finding their best form. In their last five matches, Pirates managed just four points following three losses, one draw and one win while Sundowns collected nine points after two wins and three draws.

Despite form and stats pointing to their superiority, Downs midfielder Hlompho Kekana says the Brazilians will head to the Orlando Stadium for the Absa Premiership encounter as underdogs.

“We know that Pirates are capable of winning games. The last time we played them, they beat us 3-0. So we go to the game as underdogs,” said Kekana.

“We can’t talk about the problems at Pirates. We have got our own challenges. We have to fix our house before we talk about others. Points are very important. We need points to be in with a chance. We need to continue with the way we have been working. We have to carry on with the mentality.”

Before their last two matches, in which they scored five goals, Sundowns found the going tough as goals were denied them. Kekana says that lady luck is now smiling on them hence their 3-1 and 2-0 win over SuperSport United and Free State Stars respectively.

“What we lacked before was luck. Now we have the luck because we are scoring goals and we will see what happens,” said Kekana.

Sundowns trail log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, who have 36 points, by 13 points and Kekana says the defending Champions, who are second on the log, should work their socks off to narrow the margin between them and Amakhosi.

“We have done well but we still have a lot of work to do. We have to win as many games as we can so that we can minimise the gap between us and the log leaders. If we continue the way we are going, we can make progress and catch up,” said the former SuperSport and Bloemfontein Celtic player.

Pirates also have the hopes of catching up with Chiefs, who lead them by 18 points. Their caretaker coach Eric Tinkler, whose first match in charge was the 2-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend, has challenged his side to rise from the disappointment and turn their season around.

“We have got an important game again Sundowns. We have got to go there and collect three points to turn our season around. It’s important that the players become more confident in their abilities and we try and bring back that team spirit, morale and confidence we used to have in the team,” said the man who replaced Vladimir Vermezovic.

During the loss to Chiefs, Pirates were unable to manufacture a free-flowing game with seamless combinations between the midfielders and the strikers. This contributed to the loss against Amakhosi. The lack of goals is a worry. Tinkler has called on his forwards to start striking again. “In terms of our play is that we start to link up play a lot better. We start creating those opportunities in the final third and we start scoring. We need Kermit (Erasmus), we need (Lehlohonolo) Majoro to start scoring goals but it doesn’t lie with them.

“That responsibility lies with everybody. That’s what is important right now for me,” said the former Bafana Bafana midfielder.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm - The Star

To honor his efforts with the Cougars, someone paid for a billboard in Spokane, Wash., his hometown, thanking him for his great career.

Halliday finished his career with 11,308 yards and 90 touchdowns and set an NCAA record earlier in the 2014 season with 734 passing yards against Cal.

News sport : Navy to wear new 'Don't Tread On Me' uniforms for Army-Navy game (Photos)

Saturday marks the 115th edition of the historic rivalry between Army and Navy. To commemorate the occasion, Navy will wear special “Don’t Tread On Me” uniforms when kickoff rolls around at 3:00 p.m. ET at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

(via Navy Athletics)

According to a release from Navy, the uniforms are inspired by the First Navy Jack and have the “Don’t Tread On Me” motto on the hem of each jersey and on the side of the pants.

From Navy:

In 2002 Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England ordered all United States Navy ships to fly the First Navy Jack with the "Don't Tread On Me" motto and moving rattlesnake in place of the regular Navy Jack for the duration of the global war on terror. The First Navy Jack, with its red and white stripes, was first used by the Continental Navy during the American Revolution.

(via Navy Athletics)

Additionally, the helmet has a new N-star logo with the red and white stripes from the flag, along with the interlocking rattlesnake. Also, the 13 red stripes from the flag are represented on the “shoulders of the jersey, knee insets of the pants, palms of the gloves, baselayer and socks.”

(via Navy Athletics)

Coming off back-to-back wins over Georgia Southern and South Alabama, the 6-5 Midshipmen will look to make it three straight wins to close out the regular season with a win over the Black Knights.

Army won two of its last three games to improve its record to 4-7 heading into Saturday’s game.

Navy has won 12 consecutive games in the series and is scheduled to face San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen and Texas A&M offensive coordinator Jake Spavital are already having a back-and-forth about their schools' December 29 meeting in the Liberty Bowl.

The two coached together at Houston, Oklahoma State and West Virginia before Spavital became Texas A&M's offensive coordinator in 2013. Spavital was a grad assistant at Houston and Oklahoma State while Holgorsen was an assistant and was West Virginia's quarterbacks coach for two seasons after Holgorsen was hired as the Mountaineers' head coach.

According to Tony Caridi, the Mountaineers' play-by-play announcer, Spavital started it via phone and then the banter took off on Twitter from there.

We hope this continues all through December.

News sport : Tulane's Kenny Welcome sang the national anthem Saturday (Video)

Tulane's played at home in its final game of the season on Saturday, and for Senior Day, DT Kenny Welcome sang the national anthem.

How did Welcome get picked for the job? Well, he sang "Isn't She Lovely" in an audition to Tulane's marketing department.

From NOLA.com:

Welcome has done weddings, funerals, and he has belted out most of his harmony at First Street United Methodist Church but this will be the first sporting event.

"I've always joked around about it as far as my whole time in college," Welcome said. "I know my mom always wanted me to sing it. I sang a snippet of it on the ESPN Access when we did a tour of the stadium, and after that, all the people were interested in me singing."

Welcome, a redshirt senior, played in all of Tulane's 12 games this season and had one tackle. His voice has the approval of his coach Curtis Johnson, however. And our approval too. Welcome is really good.

"He can sing. It's funny. I listen to Luther Vandross a lot and I try to serenade my wife and it only works about half the time," Johnson said. "But I listen to him and, golly, he sounds like Luther. He can really, really sing. I'm impressed and it's hard to impress me."

Tulane lost to Temple 10-3 on Saturday. The Green Wave finish the season 3-9.

Stars out to halt Chiefs

Amakhosi’s unbeaten league run is on the line against their Telkom cup conquerors, Platinum Stars.

|||

Kaizer Chiefs leap into the season’s second round fixtures with a clash against Platinum Stars still unbeaten and looking increasingly like a championship-winning side.

They were clinical in their last two matches, Amakhosi scoring five goals without conceding in accounting for both Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates.

The clash at their alternative home in Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium, is only their 15th match though, Stuart Baxter’s team yet to play Chippa United to complete their first round schedule.

In Stars they meet the only side that has managed to put a blemish on their impeccable season – albeit via the penalty shoot-out route, the two having drawn their Telkom Knockout quarter-final clash goalless.

Chiefs will, however, take comfort in the fact they easily overcame Stars in their league clash out in Rustenburg – the 2-0 win back in August setting them up for the superb Premiership run they are currently enjoying.

When they drew in the Cup, it was largely through the goalkeeping heroics of Siyabonga Mpontshane that Stars were victorious – the No1 foiling many a Chiefs attacks during regulation play and extra-time before starring in the shoot-out.

He will be eager to do the same tonight while hoping that his teammates are able to breach a Chiefs rearguard that has been pretty miserly this term.

Of encouragement to Stars will no doubt be the fact that their defeat to Chiefs came at a time when they were struggling to find their footing – Dikwena having had a pathetic start to the season that saw them languishing at the lowest rung of the table along with AmaZulu.

They have not really moved away from the danger zone yet but they have shown a marked improvement in recent weeks and go into the Polokwane clash on the back of a win away to Moroka Swallows that should have Alan Freese’s team in a confident frame of mind.

That they were on the losing side when they played in the Limpopo capital last week – Polokwane City beat them 2-1 – could work negatively on their psyche.

But Freese knows how to motivate his teams that is teeming with seasoned professionals in the likes of captain Vuyo Mere, midfielder Robert Ng’ambi and striker Eleazor Rodgers. These three, as well as the likes of Solomon Mathe, Mogakolodi Ngele and Tintswalo Tshabalala will need to be at their sizzling best if Stars are to inflict upon Chiefs their maiden league loss of the season.

But on the strength of their recent matches it is hard to imagine Amakhosi dropping the ball.

Not when Siphiwe Tshabalala is in inspired form, the left-footed veteran having been influential in both the 3-0 hammering of Wits last week and the 2-0 success over the Buccaneers in Saturday’s Soweto derby.

George Lebese is also playing the football of his life while Brilliant Khuzwayo is fast establishing himself as a top goalkeeper with some match-winning stops.

While clearly pleased with his team’s great form, Baxter is realistic enough to know that defeat might happen and said after the Pirates victory that the key is not to go through the season unbeaten but rather that his team are able to lift themselves up should they stumble. Not that there’ll be many betting on Stars becoming the first side to beat Chiefs, the fact they knocked them out of the Telkom Knockout notwithstanding.

Wenger defiant despite fan abuse

Under-fire Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger came out fighting , insisting abuse from his own supporters will not break him.

|||

Under-fire Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger came out fighting , insisting abuse from his own supporters will not break him.

The Frenchman was criticised by disgruntled fans, who want him to leave the club, following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Stoke City.

Internet footage of furious Arsenal fans aiming a torrent of abuse at Wenger as his side boarded a train back to London went viral over the weekend — scenes that Gary Lineker yesterday labelled as ‘disgustingly disrespectful and totally inexcusable’.

It has also been claimed that fights broke out between pro and anti-Wenger fans as tensions flared over the club’s poor run of form.

But Wenger has hit back ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash against Galatasaray here, claiming he is man enough to take it.

When asked if such abuse was wearing him down, the Arsenal manager defiantly responded: ‘No, not at all. We have to cope with that. We are professional footballers and football people. I am a competitive person.

‘What is important is the next game and responding in a strong way. It is part of our job. We cannot always look for excuses. We are down. Everyone feels it.

‘When you have a disappointment you have to respond. You cannot guarantee you will never lose a game. Many teams will lose at Stoke. You have to be realistic and the response after a defeat is important.

‘This is my 180th Champions League game and that shows something. Many of those were for this club.

‘We want to be judged at the end of the season, not after every game when emotion is high. Let’s get our stability back and see where we are at the end of the season.’

On the incident at Stoke-on-Trent train station, Match of the Day presenter Lineker tweeted: ‘Just saw the Wenger abuse video. Disgustingly disrespectful and totally inexcusable, regardless of any football results.’

Wenger, whose side have a chance to top Group D if they beat Galatasaray and Borussia Dortmund lose to Anderlecht, wants a much sounder defensive display than the one against Stoke.

The returns of right back Mathieu Debuchy, who will make his first appearance in three months since recovering from a damaged ankle, and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who has missed three weeks with a hip injury, will strengthen the side.

However, 13 first-team players are missing as, in addition to their lengthy injury list, Arsenal have left Kieran Gibbs, Danny Welbeck, Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez, who has been carrying a slight groin problem, in London.

That means six youngsters: Chuba Akpom, Gedion Zelalem, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Stefan O’Connor, Alex Iwobi and Glen Kamara could be given a chance to impress.

Wenger said: ‘What we want is to come back quickly with a strong defensive performance. Against Stoke, we had a bad start and were punished for it.

‘We showed a lack of experience defensively, but we could have scored four or five. The response during the game was strong and everyone is disappointed.

‘We don’t have to come here to qualify and so do not play under too much pressure. We want to win, of course, but what we also want is a different defensive response. I am sure we will get it.’ – Daily Mail

Calculators out for Roma, City clash

The calculators will be out in force as AS Roma and Manchester City clash for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League with outsiders CSKA Moscow lurking in the background.

|||

Rome - The calculators will be out in force as AS Roma and Manchester City clash for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League with outsiders CSKA Moscow lurking in the background.

The head-to-head rule which Uefa use to separate teams who are level on points means that all sorts of complex connotations are possible as the three sides bid to follow runaway Group E leaders Bayern Munich into the next round.

Manchester City have never won a competitive match in Italy in four previous attempts and, even if they break that taboo, could still suffer another premature group stage exit.

Roma's fate is in their own hands as a win will be enough for them while a draw, paradoxically, could send either themselves or City through, depending on CSKA's performance.

“City are obliged to win. They have all the pressure. Not Roma. City are in the same period that Chelsea used to be before they won it. It becomes complex until you win the trophy,” Roma's Ivorian striker Gervinho told British media.

Roma, City and CSKA all have five points from five games after mediocre campaigns in a group dominated by Bayern.

A win for Roma, still in the hunt despite losing 7-1 at home to the Bavarians, will guarantee them a second place finish, even if CSKA also win, as the Serie A side would have the better head-to-head record against the Russians.

CSKA can only qualify if they win in Munich and Roma fail to beat City while City will qualify if they win and CSKA do not.

The rule fun begins if Roma and City draw. If CSKA also draw, Roma would go through, and if the Russians lose, it would come down to the head-to-head record between the Serie A and English side. A goalless draw would favour Roma and a score draw would do for City.

City have gone out in the group stage twice in three attempts and their task has been made ever harder after their leading scorer Sergio Aguero was injured against Everton on Saturday, forcing him out of the tie.

City will also be without midfielder Yaya Toure who is suspended, while skipper Vincent Kompany, and midfielders Stefan Jovetic and Fernandinho face late fitness tests.

However, forward James Milner believes that even without Aguero and Toure City can get the result they need.

“Sergio is a world class player, and has been outstanding all season so the injury has come at a bad time.

“He is going to be very difficult to replace and even without him and Yaya (Toure) we have a fantastic squad of players and, with the players, we have I am not too worried.”

“We've had to win our last two games to qualify and I believe we can win in Rome after beating Bayern.” – Reuters

United were lucky - Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal conceded that he was indebted to Robin van Persie for their victory at Southampton.

|||

Southampton, United Kingdom – Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal conceded that he was indebted to Robin van Persie after the Dutch striker's brace earned his below-par side a 2-1 victory at Southampton.

United prevailed at St Mary's on Monday despite an error-strewn display in which they mustered only three attempts at goal, with Van Persie netting either side of Graziano Pelle's first-half equaliser.

It gave United a fifth consecutive win and sent them up to third place in the Premier League ahead of Sunday's home game with old enemies Liverpool, but Van Gaal admitted that his team had been “lucky”.

“I think that not only the goals are telling something about Robin van Persie,” the Dutchman told his post-match press conference.

“I think also his performance Ä he was one of the three players on the pitch of Manchester United who were good or maybe very good.”

Van Gaal refused to reveal the identities of the other two players who had met his expectations, and when asked for his verdict on the other 11 United players – including substitutes – he replied: “They were not good.

“There is a range of course between good and bad, but they were not good. Normally you have six, seven, eight players who are good and three players who are in that range. But today (Monday) there were too many players not good.”

He added: “It's fantastic to be now third in the table, but I had hoped we would do that with a better performance. Because tonight we were the lucky team.”

United lost defender Chris Smalling to a groin injury in the 18th minute, – the latest in a sequence of defensive injuries –

while Van Gaal also withdrew teenage centre-back Paddy McNair before half-time.

It was a moment of public embarrassment for the 19-year-old defender, who ceded his place to midfielder Michael Carrick, but Van Gaal said that the youngster's shaky display had left him with no option.

“He had no confidence. He had given three chances away,” Van Gaal explained.

“It's very disappointing for me and for Paddy, but I had to because as a manager I am responsible. It's tough, but it's also in his best interests.”

Van Persie put United ahead in the 12th minute after seizing onto a blind back-pass from Jose Fonte, with Pelle slamming home an equaliser just after the half-hour.

Southampton seemed to have United on the ropes thereafter, but in the 71st minute Wayne Rooney lofted a free-kick into the box from wide on the left and Van Persie stole in to volley home his sixth goal of the season.

Analysing the game for Sky Sports, former United defender Gary Neville opined that his old club had “got away with murder”, but Van Gaal appeared to disagree with his assessment.

“He can say everything because he is an ex-legend. But as an ex-legend or a legend, you have to know what you are saying,” the United manager said.

Asked to clarify his remarks, he told reporters: “You can interpret that. Make an interpretation. It's not so difficult to make an interpretation, when I say that he has to pay attention to his words.”

In contrast to United, Southampton, who slipped to fifth, created a glut of opportunities, forcing visiting goalkeeper David de Gea to make three impressive reflex saves.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has now seen his side lose three games in succession after previous defeats to Manchester City and Arsenal, but he felt the latest setback was largely self-inflicted.

“We did not lose against Man United tonight – we lost by ourselves,” he said.

“City were the better team, but we deserved more against Arsenal, and we deserved much more tonight. But if you give players like Van Persie those kinds of mistakes, they will punish you, for sure.

“We didn't punish them for their mistakes, and that was the difference in my opinion.” – Sapa-AFP

Arsenal to face Hull in FA Cup

FA Cup holders Arsenal have been drawn against runners-up Hull City, a repeat of last year's enthralling final, in this season's third round.

|||

London - FA Cup holders Arsenal have been drawn against runners-up Hull City, a repeat of last year's enthralling final, in this season's third round after the draw was made.

Arsenal won the final 3-2 but only after coming back from trailing 2-0 after eight minutes at Wembley.

Santi Cazorla and Laurent Koscielny scored to send the game into extra time before Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey fired in to end Arsenal's nine-year wait for a major trophy.

“I guess it was just meant to be, with it happening in rehearsal and the draw being in Hull,” Curtis Davies, who scored for Hull in the final, told the BBC.

“Alan Shearer (who performed the draw) will have to take the plaudits for this. We will have to go there and just give them a good game.”

Hull manager Steve Bruce said: “It's quite remarkable. As soon as I walked in everyone was telling me we had drawn Arsenal in the rehearsal, so to do it again in the main draw is a shock. Let's hope it is as good as the final was.”

In other notable ties thrown up by the draw in Hull's aquarium, Premier League leaders Chelsea host Championship (second tier) side Watford, Manchester City play Championship team Sheffield Wednesday and top flight Crystal Palace travel to Conference (fifth tier) side Dover Athletic.

Elsewhere Tottenham Hotspur travel to Premier League rivals Burnley in a repeat of the 1962 final and Sunderland host Championship side Leeds United in a repeat of the 1973 final.

Liverpool will play League Two (fourth tier) AFC Wimbledon. The Merseyside Club lost the 1988 final to the original Wimbledon side before they relocated to become the Milton Keynes Dons in 2004.

Seventh tier Blyth Spartans, the lowest ranked team in the draw for the third round, host Championship side Birmingham City.

Ties for the third round will be played January 3 and Jan. 4. – Reuters

News sport : Blake Griffin hits OT buzzer-beating 3 for amazing Clippers win over Suns

One of the best games of the 2014-15 season so far received a fantastically fitting ending. Over nearly 53 minutes of play, the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns played an intense, close, and exciting contest that could have easily gone either way. Then Blake Griffin finished the night with a thrill.

With the Clippers down 120-118 and only 2.6 seconds remaining in overtime, Griffin took a short inbounds pass from Chris Paul and quickly stepped back for a potential game-winning three-pointer. The ball initially looked on its way to the floor after catching front rim, but a fortuitous bounce gave the Clippers the lead.

The 121-120 victory extends the Clippers' winning streak to eight games, which makes them the second-hottest team in the NBA behind the surging Golden State Warriors. However, the game very easily could have gone the other way.

Griffin was terrific all night with 45 points (14-of-24 FG, 15-of-17 FT) in 43 minutes, but he made a decision right before his winner that nearly cost the Clippers the game. With a foul to give, the Suns grabbed Griffin on a drive to the basket that looked like it could have ended in a shot. However, Griffin passed out of the trap to find an open shooter in the corner, which meant that Los Angeles had very little time to tie or win. Obviously, things worked out pretty well for the Clippers.

Yet this ending was just the last in a string of crazy plays throughout the game. For instance, the Clippers only had the ball on the final possession because of a shot-clock violation by the Suns that required replay review to ensure that Goran Dragic had missed rim on a jumper that ended up in the hands of Gerald Green, whom head coach Doc Rivers desperately wanted the Clippers to foul. Oh, and the game ended up in overtime because of a blocked shot by Eric Bledsoe on a potential winner from Chris Paul:

There was much more, too — Jamal Crawford received the first ejection of his career in the fourth quarter for arguing a foul call, and Jared Cunningham made a very unlikely four-point play at the end of the first half off a trademark baseball pass from Matt Barnes:

Yet the game was much more than bizarre occurrences. Both teams played at full energy levels with the sort of urgency that would seem a better fit for the playoffs than a random Monday in December. Bledsoe in particular seemed to relish the opportunity to play his former team, notching his first-career triple-double with 27 points, 16 assists, 11 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks in 45 minutes. Six of the nine Suns who saw the floor scored in double figures, with virtually every player in the bunch making some big play that could have easily added up to a win.

The bad news for the Suns was that they were playing Griffin, who showed off the full catalogue of offensive abilities that critics have wanted to see from him since he first burst onto the scene as a highlight-dominating rookie. He hit both of his three-point attempts, several more jumpers, difficult finishes in the lane, and plenty of free throws. If that wasn't enough, Griffin also had one of his most impressive dunks in recent memory:

The game-winner saved the Clippers from a loss, but Griffin's shot and this game as a whole were already stellar. Anyone who stayed up late for the last game of the NBA's Monday schedule was surely not disappointed. This one had everything.

Aguero worry for City

Manchester City fear striker Sergio Aguero could be out for longer than was first thought.

Manchester City fear striker Sergio Aguero could be out for longer than was first thought.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini had hoped to have the Argentine back within four weeks but scans have revealed that Aguero, who injured his knee in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Everton, has a twisted medial ligament that is expected to take longer to recover from.

The injury is similar to the one David Silva suffered on October 29 and the Spaniard has not played since.

The responsibility for leading City’s attack in their crucial Champions League clash at Roma tomorrow night will fall to Edin Dzeko.

The 28-year-old has only two Premier League goals this season and none in Europe. After their home win against Bayern Munich last month City still have the chance to qualify for the last 16. – Daily Mail
