News sport : Time-lapse video shows Carrier Dome transformation from basketball court to hockey rink

The Frozen Dome Classic that took place on Nov. 22 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York set the U.S. indoor attendance record for a professional hockey game. The AHL’s Syracuse Crunch beat the Utica Comets in front of 30,715 fans as history was made.

The Crunch took control of the Carrier Dome at 12:01 a.m. ET on Nov. 17, giving the company building the rink less than a week to work with. They managed to finish the job in the tight time-frame and the game went off without a hitch.

This time-lapse video, set to the never boring "Ice Ice Baby," shows the entire process, from the last Syracuse basketball game before the break to the entire rink-building process to the hoops team’s return to the court nine days later.

We're not far away from the constant stream of Winter Classic rink updates before everyone begins to worry about what the weather will be like in Washington D.C. come Jan. 1. It's almost as much a tradition as the game itself.

News sport : Andre Drummond snaps a photo of him driving 26 miles an hour over the speed limit with no seatbelt

If you want to re-route some misplaced anger toward an NBA player today, Andre Drummond should be your guy.

The Detroit Pistons center not only Snapchatted a picture while driving on Saturday, completely stupid and reckless to begin with, but the photo he picked showed him driving 96 and soon to be 97 miles per hour on a highway with a 70 mile an hour speed limit. Drummond even decided to add text and an emoji to his post – again, while driving – and the photo even reveals that Drummond wasn’t even wearing a seat belt at the time.

Again, incredibly, incredibly stupid. From Reddit:

(Courtesy Reddit and Snapchat)

Do we really have to get into how dumb this is? Well, judging by just some of my interactions on the road on Monday, yes.

Don’t use your phone while you drive. You’re not good at it. You think you are, because you haven’t gotten into a wreck yet, but you’re not good at it.

This isn’t just aimed at people Drummond’s age, or younger. I’m talking to you, bank teller and mother of two. I’m talking to you, contractor in a van following up on a parts order. I’m talking to you, Aunt Cheryl who didn’t even have a cell phone until four years ago. Talking, texting, Facebooking – you are terrible at using your phone while driving, at any speed, and you aren’t even noticing because nothing short of a wreck is encouraging you to put your eyes back on the road.

Just pulling out the phone to access the camera, something that is illegal in Michigan (as it should be illegal nationwide; all forms of phone communication save for emergency calls should be) was wrong enough. The fact that Drummond accessed his Snapchat application, typed out a message and emoji, and sent it out? Even if he was going 46 in a 45, this is about as idiotic and dangerous as these things get.

Drummond wasn’t going 46 in a 45, though. He was going 96 in a 70. Without his seatbelt on.

As the weekend moved along, Drummond was asked about his screwup, and he apologized. From David Mayo at MLive.com:

"I own up to it," Drummond said. "It's a silly mistake. Just got to move forward from it. It won't happen again. That's really it."

Snapchat, a photo-sharing site, is popular partly because images posted there are designed to vanish after a few seconds.

Drummond’s coach, Stan Van Gundy, was also asked about the photo:

"I know you're young and you think you're indestructible, but for the people that care about you, it's scary as hell," Van Gundy said before Sunday night's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"I don't want to wake up and read about Andre Drummond in an accident. That's the issue to me."

We’re coming up on the 15th anniversary of Bobby Phills’ death. Drummond and many other players his age may have never heard of Bobby Phills, but he was about as respected as NBA players came during that era, a heady contributor that coaches and teammates adored.

Phills died in a car accident because he was racing teammate David Wesley on his way home from practice, driving 75 miles an hour at the time, endangering two other drivers who were also involved in the accident as Phills swerved into oncoming traffic. Bobby was driving a Porsche 911, a car known for its precise handling despite its rear drive setup, and working on a clear day with good visibility. He wasn’t driving some honking Mercedes SUV going nearly triple digits, while taking photos and tapping out captions.

The extent of Drummond’s recklessness is, indeed, scary as hell. However, slower drivers need to understand that they’re closer to Drummond’s brand of lawlessness than they think any time they decide to whip out their phone when their hands should be on the wheel and/or gear shift instead.

News sport : Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says he would have voted TCU over Baylor

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby speaks at the opening of the NCAA college Big 12 Conference football media days in Dallas, Monday, July 21, 2014. (AP Photo/LM Otero) Bob Bowlsby needs to stop talking.

The Big 12 commissioner appeared on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning and told Patrick he would have voted Big 12 conference member TCU fourth in the College Football Playoff rankings over fellow member Baylor. Of course, Bowlsby’s comments sparked all sorts of controversy because while the teams were considered co-champions in the conference, Baylor beat TCU head-to-head.

The Bears also were ranked ahead of the Horned Frogs in the final College Football Playoff rankings.

"The only reason I say this is anything between our two schools — they had a better chance of staying in [the final four],” Bowlsby said. “It seemed like they were better positioned to have a chance to stay there.”

Both teams were left out of the four-team playoff. TCU, which was No. 3 in the playoff rankings heading into the final weekend, was jumped by both Florida State and Ohio State, which won their respective conference title games.

The Big 12 is a 10-member league and consequently doesn’t have a conference title game. Bowlsby admitted to ESPN on Sunday that his conference made a mistake by not having a conference championship, which wasn’t really a ringing endorsement for the league.

A week ago, Bowlsby talked himself in circles while trying to explain how the Big 12’s motto of “One True Champion” could still apply to co-champions.

Even Baylor coach Art Briles questioned the league’s credo after his team won its final regular season game and both his team and TCU finished 11-1.

The Big 12 was the only power conference left out of the inaugural playoff, which was somewhat stunning considering it had two teams ranked in the top 6 and one team that had been in the top 4 for a couple weeks.

It has not been a good couple of PR weeks for Bowlsby or the Big 12 and now it’s probably best to shut it down.

The Big 12 coaches, athletic directors and presidents will need to meet to discuss the next steps to insure a situation like this year’s playoff doesn’t happen again. Whether that means expanding to 12 teams or simply continuing to push for a waiver for a conference title game with 10 teams remains to be seen.

News sport : Vanderbilt fires defensive coordinator David Kotulski

Nov 29, 2014; Nashville, TN, USA; Vanderbilt Commodores head coach Derek Mason after a loss against the Tennessee Volunteers at Vanderbilt Stadium. The Volunteers won 24-17. (Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports) Less than a week after parting ways with three assistants, Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason made another change to his coaching staff on Monday.

Mason announced that he would not retain defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach David Kotulski moving forward. Mason and Kotulski first coached together as defensive assistants at Bucknell in the late 1990’s. Kotulski then coached linebackers at Stanford while Mason was the Cardinal’s defensive coordinator. Mason then brought him over to Vanderbilt when Mason was hired in January.

“David is a very close friend and a true mentor,” Mason said in a statement. “Few coaches have impacted my career and knowledge of defensive schemes as much as Coach Kotulski. I greatly appreciate his service to our program in the last year.”

After going 3-9 and not winning a game in SEC play in his first year as head coach, Mason announced last Wednesday that offensive coordinator Karl Donnell, wide receivers coach Marc Lubick and strength coach Bill Hughan would not be retained.

The Commodoes were 70th nationally in total defense this season, allowing an average of 402.1 yards per game. Additionally, Mason’s team was No. 103 nationally out of 125 teams in scoring defense by allowing 33.3 points per game.

News sport : Big Ten institutes new concussion protocols, which include trainer in the review booth

The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors announced Monday that it will change its protocol pertaining to the handling of in-game concussions and student-athlete welfare.

The conference now will mandate that each game have a neutral athletic trainer stationed in the replay booth with his or her own monitor to be able to closely observe any on-field incidents and replays. Those trainers will have the ability to contact officials on the field and relay their recommendations for a player’s safety. This person will be a supplement to the athletic trainers and doctors already on the field.

The move comes months after Michigan was thrust into the national spotlight following the handling of a concussion sustained by quarterback Shane Morris. Not only did Morris remain in the game after he was concussed, he also re-entered the game after his backup, Devin Gardner, was forced to sit out a play after losing his helmet. The action of the training staff and the inaction by coach Brady Hoke drew criticism from across the country and ultimately resulted in the firing of athletic director Dave Brandon and Hoke’s subsequent termination (though there were many reasons for his firing).

With this announcement, the Big Ten said it would hand out disciplinary action for those programs that do not comply with the new rules.

News sport : P.K. Subban’s 2-year-old super fan wants a hug (Video)

Levi is 28 months old. He recently dictated a letter to Santa Claus to his father, and hounded his father to help him compose another letter to a jolly man in a red suit: P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens.

One night Levi grabbed his Habs jersey and began saying all the things about Subban, which are going to make you feel all the feels. Someone get this young man a ticket to Bell Centre and the pregame hug he’s asking for! It’s all he wants for Christmas, people!

But while Levi’s adorable kid-speak about racing Subban on the ice and winning the Stanley Cup are great, the real highlight of this video is the simmer disappointment in his father’s voice.

You see, Levi is wearing blue pajamas that he thinks are a Vancouver Canucks jersey. In fact, he self-identifies as a Canucks fan, telling his father he’s with the blue team. That’s because his mother is a Canucks fan, despite what must be incessant proselytizing by his father. (“Hey, how about instead of watching Caillou we watch the Best of Guy Lafleur again, huh champ?”)

Again, this is why that meeting with Subban is so essential. He’s two years old. There’s still time to save him from a lifetime of unending frustration as a Canucks fan. Hell, it’s almost a civic duty, P.K.

By the way, we highly recommend this New Yorker feature on Subban, on the heels of Michael Farber’s awesome (though poorly promoted by his publication) piece on P.K. as well.

Spurs legend slams Wenger attack

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker came to the defence of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

|||

London - Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker came to the defence of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after he was jeered by Gunners fans following their 3-2 defeat at Stoke City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Videos posted on YouTube appears to show Wenger, 65, being jeered and sworn at by fans as he boarded his train following his side's defeat at the Britannia Stadium that has left them sixth in the table 13 points behind leaders Chelsea.

One fan can also be heard yelling at striker Joel Campbell, walking just ahead of Wenger, “Get out while you can Joel.”

Lineker, the former Spurs striker who is now a BBC Sport presenter, tweeted: “Just saw the Wenger abuse video.

“Disgustingly disrespectful and totally inexcusable, regardless of any football results” he said.

Wenger was also the target of criticism from Arsenal fans during his side's 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion last weekend where some Arsenal fans unveiled a banner that read: “Arsene, thanks for the memories but it's time to say goodbye.”

A fight also broke out between Arsenal fans who support Wenger and those who want to see him leave after the match at Stoke according to a report in the Sun on Sunday.

One fan tweeted: “Fist fights between Arsenal fans after the game, absolute joke. Disgusting to see our own fans punching each other.”

Wenger remained in the dugout throughout the game so that Stoke fans, angered by him saying in the past that they were a “rugby team”, could not see him.

“I didn't want to give them an opportunity to show me their love,” he said afterwards.

Wenger has been Arsenal manager since 1996 and ended a wait of nine years without a trophy when the Gunners beat Hull City to win the FA Cup in May. – Reuters

News sport : Did Browns not start Johnny Manziel over him going to Cavs game?

There is no end to the mind games among NFL coaches and their players, and apparently Johnny Manziel got caught on the wrong side of some last week.

According to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, one reason the Cleveland Browns didn't name a starting quarterback until Wednesday was to see how the rookie Manziel reacted to the possibility that he would start. Then, Manziel showed up courtside at a Cleveland Cavaliers game on Tuesday night. The next day, the Browns announced Brian Hoyer was their quarterback.

Was that related? Glazer said yes.

“Johnny Manziel was not told he wasn’t the starting quarterback until Wednesday morning. On Tuesday evening, he was here, at the Cleveland Cavaliers game, sitting courtside," Glazer said. "And it made people inside that organization – they wanted to see how he would handle potentially starting. If you’re getting your first ever NFL start, there was hope he would be at the complex or at home getting ready for the Indianapolis Colts. He wasn’t.”

Obviously a lot went into the decision, and going with Hoyer wasn't simply due to Manziel cheering on LeBron James on Tuesday night (he has been to multiple home Cavs games this season). Still, it's an odd story if that ultimately played into Browns coach Mike Pettine's choice.

Manziel lives near the Cavs' arena, Tuesday is the players' day off in the NFL, and there was no word that Manziel did anything but watch basketball and go home on Tuesday night. It's possible Manziel put in 10 hours on Colts preparation, walked over for the 7 p.m. tip against the Bucks, and was in bed by 10 p.m.

Monitoring what players do on their off days, and apparently punishing them for something as innocuous as attending an NBA game, is a slippery slope. The Browns apparently want Manziel to cut back on his off-field activities, but to reportedly not start him because he spent a couple hours at a basketball game on Tuesday night seems a bit extreme.

Pettine said he never considered a quarterback change during Sunday's game, even though Hoyer struggled mightily and the offense's issues cost the Browns a chance to win the game, and the loss basically ruined their playoff chances. Was Pettine really was holding Manziel going to a basketball game on his off day near where he lives against him? If so, then the whole story sounds even stranger.

News sport : Houston fires head coach Tony Levine

Oct 11, 2014; Memphis, TN, USA; Houston Cougars head coach Tony Levine before the game against the Memphis Tigers at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. (Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports) Tony Levine has been fired as Houston head coach.

The program announced Monday morning that Levine “has been relieved of his duties” following his third season leading the program. The Cougars went 7-5 this season, but athletic director Mack Rhoades decided to go in a different direction.

“Coach Levine and I met several times throughout the season, and again late last night, to discuss the state of the program. Last night I informed him we will be moving in a different direction with our football program,” Rhoades said in a statement. “Coach Levine is an outstanding leader and over the last three years he has demonstrated great commitment to our student-athletes and has been an outstanding role model for our young men. He has left the program in a better situation than it was when he inherited it.”

Levine joined Houston as special teams coordinator under Kevin Sumlin in 2008. When Sumlin left to take the head coaching job at Texas A&M in 2011, Levine served as interim coach for the Cougars in a Ticket City Bowl win over Penn State.

Levine’s interim tag was lifted and he took over as head coach for the 2012 season. In his first year, the Cougars went 5-7 in their final year in Conference USA. The program then made the transition to the American Athletic Conference in 2013. The Cougars went 8-5 that season, ending with a 41-24 loss to Vanderbilt in the BBVA Compass Bowl.

Things didn’t improve much in 2014 with a 7-5 record, so Rhoades decided to make a change. Defensive coordinator David Gibbs will serve as the team’s interim head coach when the Cougars play Pittsburgh in the Armed Forces Bowl on Jan. 2.

“Although we are excited to play in our second straight bowl game, the expectations of our program have changed over the last five years with the opening of TDECU Stadium and the current college football landscape,” Rhoades said.

Overall, Levine went 21-17 with a 14-10 conference record.

Rhoades said a search for the program’s next coach is already underway and a television reporter in Houston tweeted Sunday night that Washington State head coach Mike Leach has interest in the vacancy at UH.

Less than an hour later, Washington State, via its official athletics Twitter account, shot down the report.

News sport : Clemson QB Deshaun Watson could have surgery, miss bowl game

The prospect of Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson playing in the Russell Athletic Bowl against Oklahoma on Dec. 29 was dampened Sunday evening when coach Dabo Swinney announced that his star quarterback might undergo surgery to fix a partially torn ACL.

"At this point we may go ahead and do surgery, try and get him a three-week headstart on his rehab," Swinney said during the bowl teleconference. "Really want him to get all the skills and drills done this summer. That's something we're going to visit on pretty soon."

Swinney said the coaching and training staffs would decide Watson’s fate in the next day or two.

Watson suffered an LCL sprain against Georgia Tech on Nov. 15 and then partially tore the ACL during practice the following week. Watson missed the game against Georgia Southern, but did help the Tigers defeat South Carolina for the first time since 2008.

Swinney revealed after the game that Watson had been playing with the injury.

Watson having the surgery now would almost assuredly have him back on the field for summer drills and ready for the 2015 season.Swinney had previously intimated that Watson would play in the Tigers' bowl game, but that was when they were still in the running for the Orange Bowl.

The crowd at O.co Coliseum celebrates the Raiders' win (Getty Images) The atmosphere for the San Francisco 49ers-Oakland Raiders game inside the stadium was relatively calm, despite concerns there would be problems between the rival fans.

Outside the stadium there was a shooting over the Raiders-49ers game, however.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, a man was shot in a dispute that "is game-related for sure," according to San Jose Police. Police responded to a 5:15 p.m. call from a restaurant in San Jose, and found a man who was shot and wounded. He was transported to the hospital with what the Mercury News reported were "life-threatening wounds."

Several people were detained after police arrived.

The Raiders beat the 49ers 24-13 on Sunday. The Mercury News story said officials worried about the scene at the game because of brawls that broke out in the crowd at the last three Raiders-49ers games. The Mercury News reported there was "relative peace" at the stadium.

News sport : USF fires its offensive and defensive coordinators

South Florida coach Willie Taggart runs onto the field before his team's NCAA college football game against Cincinnati, Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, in Cincinnati. (AP Photo/Al Behrman) After winning just four games in his second season as head coach at South Florida, Willie Taggart decided to make some changes to his coaching staff.

The school confirmed Monday that offensive coordinator Paul Wulff, defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and assistant head coach/defensive backs coach Ron Cooper were all fired.

“I would like to thank Chuck, Paul and Ron for everything they have done in helping move the USF football program forward,” Taggart said in a statement. “They are first-class people and I wish them the best in their future endeavors.”

With Wulff’s firing, Taggart will now hire his third offensive coordinator in as many years. Wulff joined the program in January after serving stints as head coach a Eastern Washington (2000-07) and Washington State (2008-11). He also was an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers before joining Taggart’s staff this season.

This season, the Bulls finished No. 121 in the nation with 304.7 yards per game and No. 119 in scoring offense with 17.2 points per game.

Bresnahan was let go after two years with the program. The Bulls allowed 402.8 yards per game (No. 73) and 27.0 points per game (No. 68) this season. Before coming to USF, Bresnahan was a long-time defensive assistant in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns. He also coached at Navy, Georgia Tech and Maine.

Cooper was in his second season at USF. In addition to USF, Cooper has coached at 14 different schools over the last 30 seasons, including head coaching gigs at Eastern Michigan, Louisville and Alabama A&M.

The Bulls ended their season on Nov. 28 with a 16-0 home loss to UCF to finish 4-8 on the year. In two seasons at the helm, Taggart is 6-18 overall and 5-11 in American Athletic Conference play.

News sport : Madison Bumgarner named Sports Illustrated's Sportman of the Year

(Sports Illustrated) Madison Bumgarner already had a World Series MVP trophy to go along with the San Francisco Giants' World Series trophy. Now he has yet another honor — the big lefty has been named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year.

Bumgarner was historically great in the postseason, pitching a record 52.2 innings with an incredible 1.03 ERA. His performance in the decisive World Series Game 7, in which he came out of the bullpen on two days' rest and pitched the final five innings, not allowing a run, may have been the most gutsy individual sports performance of 2014.

From Sports Illustrated's announcement:

Bumgarner is the first San Francisco Giant and the seventh MLB pitcher (Johnny Podres '55, Sandy Koufax '65, Tom Seaver '69, Orel Hershiser '88, Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson '01) to win the award. In all, there have been 15 baseball selections — 14 players and the 2004 Boston Red Sox. The most recent was Derek Jeter in '09.

"It's easy to mythologize the small-town sports hero. Baseball, especially, is full of them," Sports Illustrated Managing Editor Chris Stone said. "Madison Bumgarner isn't the Sportsman of the Year because he's from a tiny town, but that town goes a long way toward defining who he is and it gives his story a different texture from past Sportsmen. And while he's been an outstanding pitcher for the last five years, his Sportsman candidacy was so sudden and seemingly out of nowhere that it makes him the most unique Sportsman in recent memory."

In a year that featured Olympians, Tim Howard, the Seahawks winning the World Series and the Spurs winning another NBA championship, big lanky Bumgarner stood the tallest. That gutsy Game 7 performance was immortal before, but Sports Illustrated just helped cement it a little bit more.

Last chance for Liverpool

Liverpool have reached last chance saloon in the Champions League and only victory against Swiss champions FC Basel will do.

|||

London - Liverpool have reached last chance saloon in the Champions League and only victory against Swiss champions FC Basel will spare them being left out in the cold.

Third in Group B, level on four points with Bulgarian side Ludogorets, Liverpool are two points behind Basel and 11 points adrift of unbeaten group winners Real Madrid and have no more wriggle room after a disappointing campaign so far.

After a four-year absence Liverpool's return to a tournament in which they have such a rich history has been an anti-climax but a first victory since September would see them snatch a last 16 spot at the expense of the Swiss side.

Basel, who beat Liverpool 1-0 in October, need just a draw.

While Liverpool would have hoped to have performed better - their only win so far was a narrow one against Ludogorets at home - the stage is set for one of Anfield's special nights.

“We will get great support and there will be energy,” Rodgers, whose side suffered a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Sunderland on Saturday, told the Liverpool Echo.

“I remember against Zenit St Petersburg (in 2013) we needed to win by two goals and went 1-0 down early on which meant we had to win by three. We then came back to win the game 3-1.

“We could not muster that last goal. But it showed then that the support and the players coming together can be a real force. I am looking at that as being a big advantage for us. I am really looking forward to the atmosphere.”

“For us, we could not have wanted any more than to go to Anfield on Tuesday night needing to win the game to get qualified. It's perfect,” he added.

Basel's win against the Reds in October was their fourth in succession against English opposition in the competition and the Swiss Champions have lost just one of their last nine meetings with English sides.

After Basel succumbed to a spirited 1-0 home defeat against holders Madrid last month, the Spanish side's manager Carlo Ancelotti told reporters: “I believe Basel is currently better than Liverpool.

“Basel's players are fit and the team is motivated, I think Basel has a small advantage over Liverpool.”

Basel manager Paulo Sousa, who was replaced by Rodgers as Swansea City manager in 2010, told reporters that his side hold a slight advantage over Liverpool, virtue of their performance against the Spanish giants.

“I think Ancelotti is right, as we were the team that caused Real Madrid with the most difficulties in this Champions League group so far,” he said. – Reuters

News sport : Washington State LB Darryl Monroe reportedly quits team

Aug 31, 2013; Auburn, AL, USA; Washington State Cougars linebacker Darryl Monroe (13) puts on his helmet during the pre-game practice prior to the game against the Auburn Tigers at Jordan Hare Stadium. (Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports) One of the leaders of Washington State’s defense has left the team.

Redshirt junior Darryl Monroe, a three-year starter at middle linebacker, won’t return to the Cougars next season. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Monroe was third on the team with 70 tackles this season, despite losing his starting job in October. He also registered four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Monroe started the first seven games of the 2014 campaign before being replaced in the starting lineup by redshirt freshman Peyton Pelluer for the Arizona game on Oct. 25. Head coach Mike Leach said early in the season that Monroe wasn’t playing up to his capabilities and needed to “clear his mind.”

“I think he’s played cluttered,” Leach said Sept. 9, per the Seattle Times. “He’s got to clear his mind. He’s just got to pull the trigger and do it. I don’t know if he’s thinking too much. He needs to focus on just making plays.”

Monroe, a three-star recruit in the 2011 class, redshirted his first year on campus. In 2012 he earned the starting role at middle linebacker and earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors with 80 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.

He continued his strong play in 2013 with 94 tackles, eight tackles for loss and two sacks.

The Cougars went 3-9 this season in Leach’s third season at the helm.
