Falcao must accept sub role - LVG

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has declared that Radamel Falcao must content himself with a bit-part role as the on-loan Colombian striker works his way back to full fitness.

|||

London – Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has declared that Radamel Falcao must content himself with a bit-part role as the on-loan Colombian striker works his way back to full fitness.

Falcao has played for only 283 minutes since signing from Monaco on transfer deadline day and has scored just once, in a 2-1 win over Everton in early October.

The 28-year-old is short of sharpness following a month-long absence with a calf problem and Van Gaal told the Monday editions of several British newspapers that he will have to bide his time.

Falcao is expected to be named on the bench when United visit Southampton in the Premier League later on Monday, and when asked if the striker was happy with that, Van Gaal replied: “I am not interested in that. He has to follow my philosophy. Do you understand that? I am here because of that.

“I have selected him in spite of the fact he can only play for 20 minutes, because the rhythm of the game in the Premier League is the highest.

“It's match fitness (he needs). It would be a better contribution if he played with the second team, but I cannot do that because on Tuesday we had the match against Stoke and Wayne Rooney was injured.

“I had to adapt to the needs of the selection (squad).”

Despite Rooney missing the 2-1 win over Stoke due to a knee injury, Van Gaal selected 19-year-old James Wilson to partner Robin van Persie in attack, rather than Falcao.

Falcao has scored goals at a prolific rate for Porto, Atletico Madrid and Monaco, but he has not played regularly since damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in January. – Sapa-AFP

Can Chiefs become SA’s ‘Invincibles?’

Amakhosi could follow in the footsteps of Arsenal and not lose a league match the entire season.

|||

The superb run by Kaizer Chiefs so far this season has invoked all sorts of things.

The bosses are on cloud nine, the coach in seventh heaven, the players on top of the world and the fans over the moon.

After all Chiefs are at the summit of the Absa Premiership table with 36 points and they are unbeaten in 14 matches, in which they won 11 and drew three.

With Chiefs beating their bitter rivals Orlando Pirates 2-0 in the Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium in Joburg at the weekend, their confidence shot up with many saying that Chiefs could become the country’s Invincibles, a nickname given to English Premiership side Arsenal, who went an entire season without losing a single match in 2003-04 as they went on to become champions.

Though flattered, Chiefs coach Start Baxter says it is possible but he is not too concerned about going the season unbeaten.

“Because of the way we play, it is a possibility but is it something that is a must have in our game? It’s not a must have. We can take a defeat. We can take a bad performance. If we are real professionals and if we want to make South Africa proud, then we have got to be able to take a smack. I would just prepare the players for every game hoping to win. When that defeat comes along, that’s part of life. You pick yourself up and you got to get back to it.

“Real champions will do that,” said Baxter after goals by Siphiwe Tshabalala and Siphelele Mth-embu helped them to overcome Pirates and stretch their lead at the top. With over 10 points separating them and second-placed, many have already given the league to Chiefs.

The title is now theirs to lose.

Baxter says he’s taking it one step at a time.

“It’s always the same. When the team wins, the players are great and when the team loses the coach is useless. This wouldn’t be any different. If we lose this, the coach is useless. If we win the league, the players are great. I am used to that. I have been doing that for a long time now so I am a big boy.

“How are we going to prevent that from happening? We are just got to keep playing. As soon as we start thinking about that then we would be our worst enemy,” said Baxter.

Amakhosi’s emergence from the weekend with a win over their biggest rivals has done their confidence a world of good

Conversely the win may have dashed all hopes for Pirates, who are ninth and 18 points behind the log leaders.

Yet Pirates caretaker coach Eric Tinkler, who is in charge of the Buccaneers following therecent departure of Vladimir Vermezovic, says there’s still hope. The former Bafana Bafana midfielder says the players need to come out of their slump.

“Obviously it’s very difficult. We have lost five games. Any team that has lost up to six games, realistically, it becomes very difficult.

“The fact of the matter is that there’s still 51 points for us to try to win. There are 17 league games left.

“The season is far from over. We haven’t reached the halfway mark. For me, it is important that I remain positive until mathematically it’s not possible. I will be a reflection of the players if I give up how do you think the players are going to react to that. I believe we still stand a good chance.

“We just need to get a win under our belt and that could turn our season. I hope it would have been against Chiefs because I honestly believe it would have turned the tide,” said Tinkler.

In front of over 71 000 fans, things went horribly wrong for Pirates as they failed to stop Chiefs. Tinkler says Pirates have to rectify their mistakes in a quest to bounce back.

“Chiefs are like a well-oiled machine. They have been playing exceptionally well over the past couple of months creating a lot of chances.

“They found a lot of pockets in between our defence and midfielders. At half time I spoke about closing that space and unfortunately that didn’t happen and it actually led towards the first goal,” said Tinkler. “It’s important that everybody bounces back. I explained to the players in change room that we cannot think about the past. We need to concentrate on the future. What’s important is that they buckle down and work hard. We have a lot of work ahead of us from now until the December break.”

Chiefs will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 15 games when they play Platinum Stars at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane tomorrow evening while Pirates will play host to Mamelodi Sundowns at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday evening. - The Star

Crunch time for Liverpool

In the next 13 days, Liverpool face a run of four highly-charged games which could define the club’s season.

|||

Make or break time has arrived. In the next 13 days, Liverpool face a run of four highly-charged games which could define the club’s season.

For Brendan Rodgers, the spell offers a chance to turn the season round. No matter what has gone before, Liverpool’s manager knows positive results against Manchester United and Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League, and at Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup, would bring a different hue to the campaign.

But he is also aware that the events of tomorrow evening hold the key. If Liverpool beat Basle and qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, the atmosphere around the club will be transformed.

But that is a big ‘if’. The pressure on Liverpool to reach the last 16 is intense. So how will the squad cope with the expectancy of a baying Anfield crowd?

‘That’s what we will see,’ said Rodgers. ‘You look forward to these games. Our aim is to make sure we get through the qualification stage and we have a chance to do that. We only need one goal. That’s it. Then we have big games against United, Bournemouth and Arsenal.

‘It (beating Basle) would give you confidence. You could then put it (the Champions League) to bed for a couple of months. We have to stay calm and we have shown in these last four games we have the ability to do that.

‘We are harder to beat. Hopefully we can get a little bit more luck in the final third to get the goals.’

That last point shows why Rodgers cannot be entirely sure of what will happen. In corresponding games last season, Liverpool scored three unanswered goals at Old Trafford, blitzed Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield and had a comfortable 2-0 win at Bournemouth in the FA Cup.

‘We are still a little fragile,’ Kolo Toure admitted. ‘Last season we were amazing going forward and we are not at that level yet. But we are catching up slowly, we are becoming stronger.’

This, though, is a very different Liverpool team. Circumstances mean Rodgers is trying to find another way of winning but in a charmless 0-0 draw with Sunderland his side only began to look a threat once Steven Gerrard appeared from the bench.

In the 211 minutes in which Gerrard has not been on the pitch this season, Liverpool have failed to score a single goal. Only Raheem Sterling, with his dancing feet and dazzling runs, looks capable of easing the burden on his captain.

It is 10 years ago today since Gerrard dragged Liverpool into the Champions League knockout stages with an extraordinary goal against Olympiacos. Once again the responsibility will be placed on his 34-year-old shoulders to lead the way. Rodgers wants to rest his captain but, as his team laboured against Sunderland, he had to turn to him in the hope of pilfering three points.

‘He has real quality, the kind that lifted the game,’ said Rodgers. ‘He has a world-class talent. The legs may go a bit as you get older but you never lose the talent. His passing and his view of the game was phenomenal.’

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet had spent time before the game showing his players videos of what impact Gerrard has on Liverpool.

The sight of a teamsheet missing the midfielder’s name provided an unexpected bonus.

‘It shows how difficult it is for us (managers) to make decisions,’ said Poyet, whose side defended with diligence and deserved their share of the spoils. ‘It would be very easy for Brendan to play Gerrard 90 minutes every game but then lose him for a month with an injury. It is tough.

‘When you see he isn’t playing? Phew. It is good news. But when he came on, it wasn’t just the players who were affected. The crowd, the atmosphere, everything changed.

‘That is when we suffered. Liverpool were coming at us from everywhere. He is special. He is a player who, with his presence on a pitch, makes the whole place better.’

SUPER STAT: The draw helped Liverpool reach a small landmark. It was their 1500th point of the Premier League era. They are the fourth club to reach that figure.

LIVERPOOL (4-1-4-1): Mignolet 6.5; Johnson 7, Skrtel 6.5, Toure 7.5, Moreno 6: Lucas 7; Sterling 7.5, Henderson 6, Coutinho 5.5 (Markovic 77mins), Lallana 5.5 (Gerrard 65, 7); Lambert 6. Subs not used: Jones, Enrique, Lovren, Can, Allen. Booked: Lucas.

Wenger seeks Champions League boost

Arsene Wenger has vowed to field a strong team against Galatasaray as the under-fire Arsenal manager bids to silence the critics.

|||

Istanbul – Arsene Wenger has vowed to field a strong team against Galatasaray as the under-fire Arsenal manager bids to silence the critics by snatching top spot in Champions League Group D.

Wenger's side have already qualified for the knockout stages of Europe's elite club competition, but they would prefer to finish the group stage in first place to avoid a potentially tricky last 16 clash.

Even more importantly, Wenger desperately needs some good news after a chastening trip to Stoke on Saturday ended with the Gunners boss looking a beleaguered figure as he was abused by angry Arsenal fans while waiting to board the club's train home after their dismal 3-2 defeat.

An online video shows the Frenchman being subjected to foul-mouthed taunts from fans who were clearly unhappy with their team's latest capitulation in a frustrating domestic campaign which sees them languishing 13 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.

A section of Arsenal's fans unveiled a banner asking Wenger to quit after the recent 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion and on Saturday he was told to “f**k off and leave” by some fans as he tried to get on the train back to London.

In the circumstances, Wenger would clearly love to snatch top spot from Borussia Dortmund, who sit two points ahead of Arsenal and host Anderlecht in their final group match on Tuesday, and so he plans to field most of his key players against already eliminated Galatasaray in Istanbul.

“We'll go with a strong team of course, we want to win the game,” Wenger said.

“Since the start of this season we have played seven games in the Champions League, including the qualifiers, and we have won four. I would like to win five.

“Galatasaray cannot even get Europa League. It's a massive surprise because I thought they would be one of the contenders to go through.

“Turkish people are very proud and they will try to finish well this campaign with a convincing performance, but we play many games and some players are close to getting an injury, so I'll have to assess that.”

With their Premier League title challenge already in tatters, Arsenal are fighting to salvage a season which seemed to promise great things after their FA Cup final victory last term ended a nine-year trophy drought.

A long run in the Champions League after a series of last 16

exits would ease the growing pressure on Wenger, who has already had to deal with criticism from Alisher Usmanov, the club's second largest shareholder in recent weeks.

Should Dortmund lose to Anderlecht and Arsenal beat the Turks, who are already consigned to finishing bottom of the group, then the north Londoners will take first place.

But finishing second will do little to help their prospect of advancing to the quarter-finals and beyond and Gunners defender Per Mertesacker concedes Arsenal will have only themselves to blame if that is the case.

“There are small regrets in two matches in the group stage where we didn't play well,” he said.

“But it's good to have reached the last 16 with a game to spare, especially when it is an away game and it is in Istanbul. You don't want to be under pressure needing points in Istanbul.”

And, with criticism of Arsenal's numerous weaknesses growing louder by the week, Mertesacker has called for his team-mates to deliver a dynamic performance at the Turk Telekom Arena.

“It is going to be a tough one, but we have to prepare ourselves properly and prepare mentally for the fight. That's what we're going to face,” he said.

“The first 10 or 15 minutes are very important and then when you do well they get nervous, so we have to give absolutely everything and not give any chances away.” – Sapa-AFP

Aguero blow for City

Sergio Aguero has told friends he will be out for a month after damaging knee ligaments in Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Everton.

|||

Sergio Aguero has told friends he will be out for a month after damaging knee ligaments in Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

The Argentina striker is out of the decisive Champions League clash at Roma on Wednesday and also fears he will miss the next five Premier League games plus an FA Cup third round tie.

City will allow the swelling around Aguero’s knee to go down for up to 48 hours before he goes for a scan. Only then will they know exactly how long the striker will be out, but Aguero has privately expressed his fears after saying ‘he felt something strange happen inside’ the joint.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini, however, refuted suggestions that the Premier League champions are over-reliant on a striker who has already scored 19 goals this season.

‘We would prefer to play with Sergio but I don’t think he has carried us,’ said Pellegrini.

‘I suppose Ronaldo is very important for Real Madrid and Messi is very important for Barcelona, but neither of those teams are all about just one player.’

City hope David Silva will be able to play in Rome, and will give captain Vincent Kompany until tomorrow’s final training session to prove his fitness. – Daily Mail

Hat-trick sees Messi surpass 400 goals

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick and surpassed 400 club goals as Barcelona came from behind to win the Catalan derby against Espanyol.

|||

Barca - Lionel Messi scored yet another hat-trick and surpassed 400 club goals as Barcelona came from behind to win the Catalan derby 5-1 against Espanyol in La Liga on Sunday.

The Argentine, who holds the La Liga and Champions League scoring records, produced a now familiar devastating performance to take his record to 402 goals for Barca in all competitions, including 28 in friendlies.

Messi produced his tour de force, predictably, just a day after Cristiano Ronaldo, his rival for title of world's best player, scored a La Liga record 23rd hat-trick against Celta Vigo for Real Madrid.

Messi may have two fewer La Liga hat-tricks than the Portuguese but he has 29 to Ronaldo's 27 in official matches for their Spanish clubs.

Former Barca player Sergio Garcia put Espanyol ahead at the Nou Camp but Messi, who had earlier hit the crossbar with a free kick, equalised before halftime, his landmark 400th goal coming with a clinical strike from the edge of the area.

Shortly after the break, Luis Suarez found the Argentine and he again hit the corner of the net from a similar distance.

Espanyol were in disarray and Gerard Pique was allowed a free header from a corner to add to the lead after 53 minutes.

Substitute Pedro latched onto a long ball from Jordi Alba to grab another and, with nine minutes remaining, he set up Messi for a brilliantly executed third.

The win leaves Barca in second place in La Liga, two points behind Real Madrid.

“Until the first goal the game was at a slow tempo which is what we are used to as rivals just pack the defence,” Barca coach Luis Enrique told a news conference.

“When we conceded, the doubts came and we couldn't find an end product to our play. The key came with the goal before the break and then after that it was all a lot easier.”

David Moyes, the former Manchester United manager, suffered his first defeat as coach of Real Sociedad as they were crushed 4-0 at Villarreal.

The floodgates opened in the second half after an Enaut Zubikarai own goal, with Denis Cheryshev adding another before a late double from Moi Gomez. – Reuters

Carroll double sends Hammers third

Andy Carroll scored two thumping headers in West Ham United's win over Swansea City that lifted them to third in the Premier League.

|||

London - England forward Andy Carroll returned to goalscoring form with two thumping headers in West Ham United's 3-1 victory over Swansea City that lifted the London club to third in the Premier League on Sunday.

Carroll, without a goal since March, headed his side level just before halftime after Wilfried Bony had put Swansea ahead against the run of play.

He struck again early in the second half before top scorer Diafra Sakho lashed home a third as West Ham, one of this season's surprise packages, registered their third successive league victory.

Swansea had goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski sent off shortly after they fell behind for impeding Sakho.

West Ham have 27 points, one ahead of fourth-placed Southampton and two clear of fifth-placed Manchester United who face each other on Monday.

Aston Villa also came back from a goal down to condemn bottom club Leicester City to eighth defeat in 10 matches - Alan Hutton scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory.

Ciaran Clark equalised for the hosts after Leonardo Ulloa gave Leicester the lead with his first goal since September.

Villa are now unbeaten in five games.

Carroll, who has endured serious foot and ankle injuries since joining West Ham in 2012, was too powerful for Swansea's defence, especially in the air.

“It was a great feeling, it is fantastic to be back on the pitch and play as many games as I have in the last few weeks,” Carroll, who returned from his latest long-term injury last month, told the BBC.

“There is nothing better than scoring goals as a striker, so I was desperate to get a goal and it is great feeling.

“It is never a good sign going behind but we have fought back twice in a week to get the points, which is fantastic.”

West Ham dominated the opening exchanges with their newly-adopted fluent, passing football but only managed to draw one sharp stop from Fabinaski.

They were left to rue their failure to create the chances their possession warranted when Jefferson Montero's smart cut back was steered in by Bony for his seventh goal of the season.

Both sides created chances with the lively Gylfi Sigurdsson drawing a save from Adrian while Cheikhou Kouyate and Alex Song were wasteful in promising positions for the hosts.

With halftime looming Carroll restored parity when he met Carl Jenkinson's deep cross with a thunderous far post header.

Sakho was introduced from the bench at the break and was lively following his return from injury.

Bony clipped the top of the crossbar with a fierce drive but West Ham responded with Carroll leaping highest to cannon Stuart Downing's corner past Leon Britton's attempted clearance.

Within minutes Fabianski was shown a straight red card after dashing out of his area and barging Sakho.

Sakho twice hit the post before finally adding a deserved goal with an emphatic finish. – Reuters

News sport : Raiders win second game, douse coach with Gatorade for some reason

Tony Sparano's Gatorade bath.

GATORADE SHOWER

(1985-2014)

We gather today to mourn the passing of Gatorade Shower at the age of 29. Gatorade Shower entered this world on October 20, 1985, when members of the New York Giants doused then-head coach Bill Parcells after a key divisional victory over the Washington Redskins. Gatorade Shower then enjoyed a happy and fruitful if increasingly cliched life, present at celebrations ranging from Super Bowls to weddings. While Gatorade Shower's relevance had declined in recent years, Gatorade Shower's presence at a game always signaled significance and celebration of worthy triumph.

Gatorade Shower died on December 7, 2014, when the Oakland Raiders performed the ritual on head coach Tony Sparano. The Raiders had just won only their second game of the entire season, a 24-13 victory over the suddenly hapless 49ers. Bearing in mind that this shower-inducing second victory of 2014 came in December, cause of death was thus deemed farcical irrelevance.

Gatorade Shower is survived by a child, Shaving Cream Pie, and two grandchildren, Photobomb and Over-The-Top Sideline Interview. Funeral services will be held throughout the college football bowl season. At the services, mourners are requested to sip Gatorade rather than dump it over heads of themselves or any others.

News sport : Peyton Manning's streak of consecutive games with a TD ends

There's one record Peyton Manning won't get.

He came into Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills with 51 straight games throwing at least one touchdown pass. The record is 54, held by the New Orleans' Saints' Drew Brees. The way Manning has thrown touchdown passes for the Denver Broncos, it looked like a lock that he'd get the record.

But, over the past few weeks, Manning doesn't look like the same elite quarterback we're used to.

Manning didn't throw a touchdown against the Bills, and he didn't play that well either. The Broncos are becoming a running team, and while running back C.J. Anderson has gotten a lot of attention for his exploits, what has gone mostly unsaid is that Manning doesn't look like the same quarterback who won the MVP award last year. His arm strength, after multiple neck surgeries, famously hasn't been the same the past couple seasons. But that issue seems exacerbated lately. He hasn't thrown the ball that well, and his role in the Broncos offense has been lessened.

Manning was just 14-of-20 for 173 yards on Sunday. He threw no touchdowns, breaking the streak, and two interceptions. Unlike last week at Kansas City, the weather was just fine; temperatures remained in the 50s even after the sun set in Denver. The Broncos won 24-10 because the defense was very good and so was Anderson, with three more touchdowns.

Manning will gladly take the win, which puts the Broncos closer to winning the AFC West and getting a bye in the playoffs. And if the Broncos can ride this formula to a Super Bowl, he presumably won't care. But things look a lot different in Denver than last season, or even a few weeks ago. Manning didn’t throw a touchdown pass for his first time as a Bronco. He hasn’t had more than 200 yards passing either of the last two weeks. The record-smashing offense of a year ago isn't around anymore. The Broncos are still winning, but it looks a lot different.

And at 38 years old, it’s fair to ask what we should expect from Manning the rest of this season, and maybe beyond as well.

News sport : Ranking the bowls 1-38 (excluding the national championship)

Welcome to the world of the College Football Playoff!

Well, not quite yet. We still have three weeks to go before the playoff begins, and the bowl system hasn't gone anywhere. In fact, it's expanded. When you add in the College Football Playoff Championship Game in Arlington, Texas, on Jan. 11 , there are four more postseason games than there were last season. It's thanks to the newly-added Camellia, Boca Raton, Bahamas and Miami Beach Bowls.

Say what you want about the bowl system, but there aren't too many scenarios in which more football is a bad thing. Here's our ranking of the first 38 bowl games of the year since we don't know who will be in the title game just yet. The four playoff rotational bowls — the Peach, Fiesta, Cotton and Orange — all have intrigue and there are some pretty fun matchups outside the group as well.

Away we go:

1. Rose Bowl (Jan. 1, Pasadena, Calif.)

Oregon vs. Florida State

The Rose Bowl gets our top ranking by virtue of the likely Heisman vs. Heisman battle we're going to see between Oregon's Marcus Mariota, the presumptive 2014 winner and Florida State's Jameis Winston, the 2013 winner. And it's also a battle of polar opposites. As Winston is the most polarizing figure in college football, Mariota may be the most popular. We can't wait for this game.

2. Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1, New Orleans):

Alabama vs. Ohio State

This matchup pairs two of the hottest teams during the past month. And even though star quarterback J.T. Barrett is out, backup Cardale Jones looked more than capable to lead the Buckeyes. However, this is a big stage and while Alabama’s defense isn’t as good as it has been in past years, it’s still an intimidating force. Alabama will be the best team Ohio State has played all season and the same can’t be said for the Buckeyes. Give Bama coach Nick Saban almost a month to prepare and it’s hard to bet against him.

3. Cotton Bowl (Jan. 1, Arlington, Texas):

Baylor vs. Michigan State

This was probably a better matchup in September, but it still will be a fun one to watch. Both of these teams have prolific offenses and Michigan State probably has the better defense. The only concern is whether Baylor shows up or lets its disappoint over not making the playoff ruin what could otherwise be a pretty entertaining game.

4. Peach Bowl (Dec. 31, Atlanta)

Ole Miss vs. TCU

The Rebels' strength is its defensive secondary. TCU's strength has been its incredibly diverse and fun passing game. The key here may be the return of TCU RB B.J. Catalon. If Ole Miss can stop the pass, TCU still has the ability to run effectively. Oh, and Ole Miss would be helped immensely by a good game from QB Bo Wallace. The last time he was in the Georgia Dome he threw three first-half interceptions.

5. Orange Bowl (Dec. 31, Miami)

Mississippi State vs. Georgia Tech

It's a battle of the option, just in different forms. Georgia Tech will control the clock with its triple-option flexbone attack while Dak Prescott and Josh Robinson could combine for 40 carries themselves via Mississippi State's shotgun alignment. If there's a bowl game that could finish under three hours, this is the best possibility.

6. Fiesta Bowl (Dec. 31, Glendale, Ariz.):

Arizona vs. Boise State

This has the potential to be a fun, high-scoring game. Boise State is returning to the Fiesta bowl for the third time and it has yet to lose. This Boise State team isn’t as good as those past teams and it might have some trouble with Arizona’s stingy defense. If Arizona QB Anu Solomon is healthy, the Wildcats should prevail.

7. Alamo Bowl (Jan. 2, San Antonio)

Kansas State vs. UCLA

The best non-New Year's Six bowl is the Alamo. It'll be fun to see what Bill Snyder has designed for UCLA QB Brett Hundley and the UCLA offense. And will UCLA have an answer for the combination of Jake Waters and Tyler Lockett? The winner of the game gets to 10 wins on for the second-consecutive season too.

8. Belk Bowl (Dec. 30, Charlotte, N.C.)

Georgia vs. Louisville

This is an upgrade over last year's matchup of Cincinnati and North Carolina. But the reason we have this ranked so high is because it pits Georgia against former defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who left to become Louisville's defensive coordinator. Grantham is very familiar with Georgia's offense. Will the Cardinals be able to contain RB Nick Chubb?

9. Outback Bowl (Jan. 1, Tampa, Fla.)

Wisconsin vs. Auburn

Are the Badgers having nightmares? After getting lit up by a spread option team with exposive speed in Ohio State, the Badgers get to face one from the SEC. One positive here for Wisconsin is that Auburn's rushing defense can be gashed. Melvin Gordon could be poised to have a big day in his potential final college game.

10. Boca Raton Bowl (Dec. 23, Boca Raton, Fla.)

Marshall vs. Northern Illinois

This is the only game outside of the New Year's Six that features two conference champions. And it should be a high-scoring affair. Northern Illinois' last loss was against Central Michigan on October 11 and Marshall only lost to Western Kentucky. A strong showing for the Thundering Herd would help prove that Marshall should have had a case for a New Year's Six berth.

11. Citrus Bowl (Jan. 1, Orlando):

Minnesota vs. Missouri

This has to be a dream matchup for Minnesota running back David Cobb, who will undoubtedly watch film of fellow Big Tenner Tevin Coleman shred the Missouri defense. He might be the only advantage the Gophers have in the matchup because Missouri’s defensive front should be able to limit quarterback Mitch Leidner. It’s just a matter of whether Missouri’s offense decides to show up and make this a competitive game.

12. Holiday Bowl (Dec. 27, San Diego):

Nebraska vs. USC

This had the makings of a good game before coach Bo Pelini was fired, now it will be interesting to see how motivated the Huskers are for this contest. USC’s going to have the early edge in this one, especially if Nebraska struggles to throw the ball.

13. Sun Bowl (Dec. 27, El Paso, Texas)

Duke vs. Arizona State

We'll give you a moment to formulate your Blue Devils vs. Sun Devils in the Sun Bowl jokes now. OK, got them all out of your system? Duke has the offensive diversity to exploit a leaky ASU defense that's given up 31 or more points in its last four games. Remember how much of a game the Blue Devils gave Texas A&M in 2013?

14. Russell Athletic Bowl (Dec. 29, Orlando):

Oklahoma vs. Clemson

These two teams had eerily similar seasons — highly ranked to start the season, disappointing losses led into a disappointing seasons and now both teams are sort of limping to the end. Clemson is coming off a huge win against rival South Carolina, but its quarterback situation is a mess. Oklahoma lost a head-scratcher to Oklahoma State in its season finale. The best part of this game will be getting to see is running back Samaje Perine (if he's healthy) can put up eye-popping numbers against a legit rushing defense.

15. Las Vegas Bowl (Dec. 20, Las Vegas)

Colorado State vs. Utah

Colorado State is aiming for a repeat of interim coach mojo. In last year's Las Vegas Bowl, USC OC Clay Helton coached the Trojans as they rolled over Fresno State. To do so, the Rams will need to step up the run defense. Utah averages 176 yards rushing a game while Colorado State gives up 188.

16. Liberty Bowl (Dec. 29, Memphis, Tenn.)

West Virginia vs. Texas A&M

Will this game have the highest over/under of any of the bowls? The Aggies' defense was 101st in the country, and West Virginia can be explosive -- when it isn't turning the ball over. The Mountaineers have 28 turnovers in 2014.

17. Texas Bowl (Dec. 29, Houston)

Texas vs. Arkansas

Fire up the Southwestern Conference! The historic rivalry between the two border states reignites for the first time since 2008 and just the fifth time since Arkansas left for the SEC after 1991. Texas' rushing defense is ranked No. 64 and Arkansas averages over 5 yards a carry.

18. TaxSlayer Bowl (Jan. 2, Jacksonville, Fla.):

Iowa vs. Tennessee

Anyone who had Tennessee, which sported the youngest roster heading into the season, going to a bowl, raise your hand. OK, you’re all liars. No one saw this and this is definitely a cherry on top of the Vols season. Iowa had an opportunity to crash the Big Ten title party, but lost three of its final four games, including a heartbreaking loss to Nebraska in overtime to end the season. Both teams can put points on the board, so there’s a strong chance this could be one of the higher scoring games of the bowl season.

And if you need proof of how happy Tennessee is, just watch this video below. It's certainly something:

19. Music City Bowl (Dec. 30, Nashville, Tenn.):

LSU vs. Notre Dame

The LSU passing defense had to be salivating over this matchup. Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson has been a turnover machine and now he’s going up against one of the best passing defenses in the country. That’s not good news for the Irish. On the flipside, even just getting a few points on LSU might be enough to win since its offense has been atrocious most of the season.

20. Idaho Potato Bowl (Dec. 20, Boise):

Air Force vs. Western Michigan

It’s a little funny that Western Michigan’s team motto is “Row The Boat” and the team will be playing its first bowl game since 2011 on a field that looks like water. Sadly, this is not a favorable matchup for the Broncos. Air Force’s triple option is tough to stop and quarterback Kale Pearson has been a tough dual-threat all year.

21. Bahamas Bowl (Dec. 24, Nassau, Bahamas)

Central Michigan vs. Western Kentucky

A trip to the islands and a bunch of fried chicken courtesy of title-sponsor Popeye's? The Chippewas and Hilltoppers made out like bandits. As did their fans, as the Bahamas is an attractive destination in the middle of December when you live in Michigan and Kentucky. Will the game be as enticing as the destination?

22. Independence Bowl (Dec. 27, Shreveport, La):

Miami vs. South Carolina

Miami lost three straight to fall into the bowl, but it definitely has a chance to end its season on a high note. South Carolina fell far short of expectations this season and this bowl is a really disappointing ending to a disappointing season. It’s hard to think the Gamecocks will be really motivated for this one. If there’s a bright spot for this bowl, it’s that players might get to meet the stars of Duck Dynasty.

23. St. Petersburg Bowl (Dec. 26, St. Petersburg, Fla.)

UCF vs. N.C. State

By winning a share of the AAC, the Knights win a short trip down I-4 towards the Gulf of Mexico and now we have to wonder if George O'Leary's $100,000 bonus for the share was paid in BitCoin. After missing out on a bowl last year, the Wolfpack on a two-game winning streak following a stretch of five losses in six games. The most efficient quarterback between UCF's Justin Holman and N.C. State's Jacoby Brissette gets his team a win.

24. New Mexico Bowl (Dec. 20, Albuquerque, N.M.):

Utah State vs. UTEP

Utah State is down to its fourth-string quarterback and has somehow found a way to make a bowl game. This is a good matchup for the Aggies because the Miners like to run the ball and the Aggies like to top the run. Utah State ranks No. 26 in run defense.

25. Birmingham Bowl (Jan. 3, Birmingham, Ala.)

Florida vs. East Carolina

It's a battle of unmet expectations and a preview of a 2015 matchup. The two teams meet in September next season, though Florida under new coach Jim McElwain will look a bit different. Here's to believing ECU will work on its Hail Mary defense between now and the bowl game.

26. Poinsettia Bowl (Dec. 23, San Diego):

Navy vs. San Diego State

Not sure this bowl could have found a better matchup considering the fan bases of both teams in the San Diego area. The Aztecs will have three weeks to prepare for Navy’s triple option attack, but already give up 145.6 yards per game. This will not be an easy game for the Aztecs.

27. Foster Farms Bowl (Dec. 30, Santa Clara, Calif.):

Maryland vs. Stanford

This is not a good game. No way to sugarcoat it, it’s simply not a good game. Maryland is not good enough on offense to compete with the Stanford defense and Stanford is only just OK enough on offense to make this game interesting. It’s a good thing there are other viewing options on this day.

28. Miami Beach Bowl (Dec. 22, Miami):

BYU vs. Memphis

Memphis is appearing in its first bowl game since 2008 after being in a three-way tie for the AAC title. BYU, which struggled after losing starting quarterback Taysom Hill, rallied to win its final four games. The Cougars already went 2-1 against AAC teams this season, but Memphis will be the best of them.

29. Armed Forces Bowl (Jan. 2, Fort Worth, Texas)

Houston vs. Pitt

Houston will be keying on Pitt's James Conner, one of the best running backs in the country. And the Panthers need to watch out for Houston QB Greg Ward, who has been consistently improving since his move to the quarterback position full-time.

30. Cactus Bowl (Jan. 2, Tempe, Ariz.):

Oklahoma State vs. Washington

A week ago, Washington would have had the advantage, but after new Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph pulled off a miracle to get the Cowboys bowl eligible, it’s hard to discount the Cowboys. Washington has a strong defense, but offers little in the way of offense. Oklahoma is exactly the opposite. What are the chances this is a 13-7 final?

31. Military Bowl (Dec. 27, Annapolis, Md.):

Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech

Cincinnati was one of three teams to win the ACC (yes, three) and Virginia Tech squeaked into bowl eligibility. It’s been impossible to predict the type of team Virginia Tech is going to be in any given game, but Cincy should be the favorite in this one.

32. Camellia Bowl (Dec. 20, Montgomery, Ala.)

Bowling Green vs. South Alabama

The Jaguars are heading to the program's first-ever bowl game and become the youngest football program to make a bowl. They'll face a Bowling Green team that was spanked by Northern Illinois in the MAC title game. Can we get both teams to recreate this video?

33. Pinstripe Bowl (Dec. 27, Bronx, N.Y.)

Penn State vs. Boston College

The Nittany Lions are heading to the first bowl in its post bowl-ban era and the Eagles are heading to a bowl for the second straight season after two seasons missing out. Can Penn State defend Boston College's rushing attack? PSU is 23rd in the country in rushing defense.

34. GoDaddy Bowl (Jan. 3, Birmingham, Ala.):

Toledo vs. Arkansas State

While this might not look like a sexy matchup, it does pit two top 20 offenses against each other. Both of these teams come from conferences known for their scoring and this game should personify that. Should be a nice final prelude to the national championship.

35. Quick Lane Bowl (Dec. 26, Detroit):

North Carolina vs. Rutgers

Both of these teams had up and down seasons that saw them beat teams they probably shouldn’t have and lose to teams they shouldn’t have. Since neither of these teams plays any defense, expect a lot of scoring in this one.

36. New Orleans Bowl (Dec. 20, New Orleans)

Nevada vs. Louisiana-Lafayette

We might as well designate the Ragin' Cajuns for this bowl. Can we have a bench press contest between ULL coach Mark Hudspeth and Nevada's Brock Hekking? Pretty please? That'd make the 11 a.m. ET kick worth it. It's going to be a very early morning for Nevada fans.

37. Heart of Dallas Bowl (Dec. 26, Dallas)

Louisiana Tech vs. Illinois

Congrats, Illinois. You're going to the game at the Cotton Bowl that's not actually the Cotton Bowl which isn't even played at the Cotton Bowl anymore. Your reward is a game against Louisiana Tech, which hung with Marshall a week after putting up 76 points on Rice. Happy Boxing Day, everyone.

38. Hawaii Bowl (Dec. 24, Honolulu):

Fresno State vs. Rice

Boy is this an underwhelming game. The Bulldogs squeaked into their conference title game (and bowl eligibility) because the rest of the division was awful and Rice lost its final game of the season 76-31. Advantage Fresno State because it’s in a better league, but this game might be unwatchable.

News sport : Rams send players acquired in RG3 trade out for pregame coin toss

Plenty of people have criticized the Washington Redskins lately; matter of fact, it's probably difficult to find anyone outside of Daniel Snyder's earshot who has anything nice to say about the team. But for all the grief and disgust the Redskins have inspired, no one has done a better job of pointing out what a train wreck this team has become than the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

Yes, the Rams beat the Redskins 24-0, but that wasn't the best part of the story. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher sent Stedman Bailey, Michael Brockers, Janoris Jenkins, Alec Ogletree, Greg Robinson and Zac Stacy out to midfield to handle the coin toss.

What do those six players have in common? Why, they're six of the players St. Louis acquired via draft picks when it dealt Washington the pick that would become Robert Griffin III. Yes, the same RG3 who's now a disgraced distant second option at quarterback for Washington.

Here, courtesy of Fox Sports, is a visual reminder of where things stand:

Bailey caught two passes for 47 yards, while Ogletree had seven tackles and Jenkins three. Robinson also started the game at left tackle. Griffin? He was on mop-up duty, coming in down 24 points and completing just three of four passes while taking yet another sack. Advantage thoroughly St. Louis.

The only way St. Louis could more thoroughly de-pants Washington in this deal would be if the Rams picked up Griffin, which is not out of the realm of possibility starting next year, and turn him into a viable starter. That's really the only way this saga should end.

News sport : Evander Kane ejected for boarding, supplemental discipline forthcoming? (Video)

Good thing Evander Kane has his money phone. It might come in handy should the Department of Player Safety deem it necessary after his actions on Sunday afternoon.

In an increasingly chippy game, the Winnipeg Jets forward took a run at Anaheim defenseman Clayton Stoner. After releasing a pass up ice, Stoner is caught puck watching as Kane slams into him. With Stoner's shoulders square to the boards, Kane saw the Ducks d-man the whole way in and did not change course as he made his check. Take a look...

Other angles of the hit can be seen here and here.

Stoner was not injured on the play. Lilliputian Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen went after Kane following the hit. Knowing his defensive partner was outmatched (and as he is known to do), Stoner turned around and started throwing hay makers at Kane, who kept his gloves on.

The result of the play was a two-minute roughing minor for Stoner and Kane received a five-minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct. The Ducks did not score on the resulting major.

How the DoPS handles this one will be interesting. It definitely was boarding, but not as vicious as other clearly suspendable hits. Perhaps it's just a fine?

News sport : Check out Odell Beckham Jr.'s amazing pregame catch routine

You already know Odell Beckham Jr. as the author of The Most Spectacular Catch In NFL History. You may also know that he regularly pulls off these kinds of stunts on the sideline pregame.

Beckham took that a step further on Sunday prior to the Giants' game against the Tennessee Titans. He rainbow-kicked a football, which seems damn near impossible, and then leapfrogged six-foot-tall Josh Brown.

Seriously, is there anything this guy can't do on a football field? The Giants need to just start running every single play in his direction. Dude could probably win an 11-on-1 matchup.

News sport : Texans chaplain gets run over by Arian Foster, bounces right up

It's not a good long-term health plan to get run over by Arian Foster, but the Houston Texans team chaplain didn't seem to mind.

Foster ran wide to the left on a fourth and 1 against Tennessee, and ended up getting pushed out of bounds. He couldn't stop his momentum and Foster, at 227 pounds, ran full speed into Greg Tyler on the sideline. Tyler, the team's chaplain, obviously wasn't wearing pads and got hit hard and went straight down. It looked pretty scary as it happened.

But give Tyler this much: He's tough. He bounced right up with a smile on his face, thankfully.

According to Drew Dougherty of the Texans' web site, Tyler has some football chops to get run over by one of the best running backs in the NFL and laugh about it afterward.

Well, we're glad everyone was OK. And there's even a funny story to come out of it.

News sport : Hoyer struggles, Manziel doesn't play, and Browns lose a tough one

The Cleveland Browns’ defense was the reason the team was even in its game against the Indianapolis Colts. And, in an indirect way, the defense was the reason the Browns lost.

The Browns needed to change quarterbacks during Sunday's game. Brian Hoyer’s November struggles continued into December. The Browns chose Hoyer over rookie Johnny Manziel this week, and even if that was the right choice at the time, it became clear early on that Manziel would give them a better chance to win on Sunday

But, thanks to two defensive touchdowns, the Browns led most of the game. Did that have anything to do with Hoyer, who was terribly tentative and inaccurate? Of course not. But coaches don’t make drastic changes when things are going well, even if it makes logical sense. It’s just not in their DNA to upset the apple cart like that. They don’t want to face the criticism from an unconventional decision like that.

So Browns coach Mike Pettine stayed with Hoyer, and Hoyer's bad play kept the Colts in the game just long enough for Andrew Luck to pull it out in the end. The Colts scored on a T.Y. Hilton touchdown catch in the last minute and beat the Browns 25-24. The way the defense played, Cleveland should have won easily. But the offense was horrible.

Hoyer was 14-of-31 for 140 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. And, again, the best guess is the reason no change was made was because the Browns led until the final minute – even though Hoyer had almost nothing to do with that.

Will Manziel get the start next week? It’s possible. But it’s probably too late for the Browns, who fell to 7-6 and are in bad shape in the AFC playoff race after dropping a game they should have won. Maybe Manziel would have struggled too on Sunday and the result would have been the same. But, thanks to the defense being so good and the coach being unwilling to make a tough decision because of it, we’ll never know.
