News sport : Andre Johnson knocked out with concussion from scary hit

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson has been ruled out for the game with a concussion following a big hit from Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith.

Johnson ran a slant inside the Jaguars' 5-yard line and was rocked by Smith, the rookie linebacker, with a helmet-to-helmet hit. Johnson fumbled after contact, but the fumble was overturned when Smith was assessed a 15-yard penalty. Ryan Fitzpatrick scored a rushing TD soon afterward.

But the hit was very scary, and Johnson lay motionless — with his right arm seemingly frozen — for several moments. He was ruled out of the game with a concussion very soon after he left the field.

News sport : It's time for the Big 12 to embrace the future of college football

The Big 12 Conference created a model where it wanted to separate itself from the pack and in the end, it left it on the outside looking in.

The conference’s two best teams — Baylor and TCU — were left out of the College Football Playoff just five days after TCU ascended to No. 3 and looked primed for a playoff spot.

But College Football Playoff committee chairman Jeff Long said Ohio State, which whooped Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game, had an impressive showing that vaulted it over both Big 12 teams.

In the end, it all came down to that pivotal 13th game, a championship game, something the Big 12 Conference refused to have when it decided to stand pat with 10 conference teams instead of expanding while all the power conferences around it were doing so.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby acknowledged that the Big 12 screwed up not only with its decision to not have a conference title game, but also with its nonconference scheduling. He also said he wished he had known that the lack of a 13th game was going to be a factor in the College Football Playoff. If he had, he said, the Big 12 might have addressed the problem before it became a problem.

“It's clear that we were penalized for not having a postseason championship game,” Bowlsby said in an interview with ESPN. “And it would have been nice to had been told that ahead of time. Because we made the impression that this was — we had a different model, but it wasn't one that was going to penalize us. And I think it's clear that it did, and I think it was even said that it did. So that will cause us to go back to the drawing board a little bit, talk about whether or not we need to think about a different model.”

The Big 12 has applied for a waiver to have a conference title game without the requisite 12 teams, which would keep the Big 12 out of the expansion fray. But Bowlsby knows that solution might not be good enough and the conference might have to seek two teams to brings its numbers to 12 and create divisions.

But let’s be clear, this isn’t just about not having a conference title game or having co-champions in Baylor and TCU, it’s also about the way the Big 12 approached the past few weeks. The infighting, the trading of barbs in the media, the hiring of a PR firm and, perhaps most damning of all, Bowlsby’s awkward and backwards assertion that the league’s motto of “One True Champion” could still apply to co-champions.

Today's disappointment was actually rooted years ago when the landscape of college football changed and the Big 12 refused to change with it. The conference lost four teams to three different conferences and, for a variety of reasons, decided to stubbornly stand pat with the 10 teams that pledged their allegiance to the conference.

There were several teams itching to get into the Big 12 at that time and there still will be should the conference decide to make additions, but its clear that in an effort to be progressive with its “One True Champion” model, the Big 12 really just showed that it wasn’t fully ready to embrace the future of college football.

And the future is the playoff, and the Big 12 is already watching the first one from home.

News sport : Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State make College Football Playoff

Alabama is the top seed for the College Football Playoff and the Big 12 is completely shut out of the four-team field.

The Crimson Tide held on to the top seed from the previous week's rankings thanks to a win in the SEC Championship Game against Missouri. Oregon stayed at second after blowing out Arizona on Friday in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Florida State stayed in the top four after beating Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship Game.

Because of the wins by those three teams, their inclusion into the top four seemed like a no-brainer. The biggest debate was for the fourth spot, which was determined among TCU, Ohio State and Baylor. And the Buckeyes, after beating Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday night, slipped into the fourth spot from No. 5 the previous week, meaning TCU and Baylor, the co-champions of the Big 12, were left out of the playoff.

"I think with the championship game, Ohio State demonstrated they were a total team," committee chairman Jeff Long said. "And they did overcome replacing two quarterbacks, and that's a tremendous statement about the quality of their team. And with the conference championship in the Big Ten, with the win over the Western Division champ Wisconsin, it was decisive for Ohio State to move into that fourth spot."

After losing J.T. Barrett to injury against Michigan last week, Cardale Jones, the Buckeyes' preseason third-string quarterback, started the game against Wisconsin.

TCU was ranked No. 3 entering the weekend ahead of No. 6 Baylor, likely because Long said the panel hadn't looked at the 61-58 head-to-head win yet by the Bears over the Horned Frogs on October 11. The filibuster against the game was likely because Baylor hadn't played Kansas State, a strong opponent that TCU beat 41-20 on November 8.

On Saturday, the Bears beat Kansas State 38-27, equaling the conference schedules of the two teams after TCU's 41-20 win over KSU on November 8. And not only did TCU end up falling below Baylor when the game between the two was brought into the equation, the Horned Frogs fell below Ohio State despite beating Iowa State 55-3 on Saturday.

"TCU, I think once we saw the body of work, it was really about Ohio State's movement up," Long said. "It was Ohio State's impression, their perfomance on the field, that made a difference to the committee to move them up. So it was really about Ohio State and not about TCU."

Why was it about Ohio State? While Long said the committee didn't deal in hypotheticals, he said Ohio State's extra game via the Big Ten Championship Game made a huge difference. Since the Big 12 doesn't have a championship game, both TCU, at No. 6 in the final rankings, and Baylor, at No. 5, only played 12 games before the final standings.

The Big 12 presented the two as co-champions to the committee.

"We really don't deal in hypotheticals, so they don't have that game, but, again, I'll go back and say that Ohio State's performance in a 13th game gave them a quality win against a highly-ranked team that allowed them to move into that fourth spot," Long said.

The Buckeyes, as the No. 4 seed, will play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on January 1. Oregon will play Florida State in the Rose Bowl in the other semifinal on January 1. It's the Seminoles' second-consecutive trip out to Pasadena, Calif., as the Rose Bowl is where FSU beat Auburn for the final BCS title in January.

News sport : London Fletcher on Jim Haslett: 'He's clueless as defensive coordinator'

Lest you thought that the Washington Redskins' discord was limited to their owner and head coach and general manager and quarterback ...

Ha! Silly, silly you.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.25M Week 14 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 20,675 teams paid]

No, the Redskins' dysfunction is widespread, and it extends to both the defensive side of the ball and not just to head coaches, but also assistants.

Check out what former Redskins linebacker London Fletcher said about current Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, who has been with the team since before current head coach Jay Gruden arrived.

Speak your mind, London. It helps to get it all out. Anything else?

Shanahan was canned, but Haslett was kept. The Redskins have ranked in the bottom 12 in the NFL in each of the past five seasons Haslett has been coaching the defense.

Hey, London, give us more, will ya?

See, that's the dangerous thing. The Redskins have clearly been led to believe that Haslett is the opposite of what Fletcher is describing, hence his survival of a head-coaching move when Shanahan was fired and Gruden was brought in. Perhaps Haslett is Snyder's mole on the team, letting the owner know what's going on behind closed doors, and really isn't actually coaching the defense at all.

OK, we're kidding about that last part. Kinda.

Wits edge Celtic in late strike

A late strike from Ben Motshwari catapulted Wits to a 1-0 Premiership win over Celtic on Sunday.

|||

Johannesburg – A late strike from Ben Motshwari catapulted Wits to a 1-0 Premiership victory over Bloemfontein Celtic at the Free State Stadium on Sunday.

Motshwari punished the Celtic defence for a crucial mistake in the 85th minute to snatch all the points in the encounter.

Wits’ persistence paid-off as they were held until the dying minutes in the match to score.

A mistake from Thapelo Morena resulted in the opening goal, after his miscontrolled ball wobbled into the path of Motshwari.

With only the goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb to beat the midfielder made no mistake.

The teams sussed each other out in the opening quarter with testing ball into each other’s halves.

Celtic made attempts to catch Wits sleeping early on with a searching ball into the box by Lerato Lamola that found no recipient.

Wits showed no signs of trepidation away from home as they took the attack to the home side.

Creative midfielder Jabulani Shongwe looked to provide the spark for his team in the seventh minute when his neat touches with Ben Motswari led to a shot at goal.

Shongwe scuffed the chance that Tignyemb watched fly over the target away from danger.

The Wits defence was seemingly encouraged to head forward as Buhle Mkhwanazi made a run into the opposition half in the 24th minute but lost the ball to Morena.

Minutes went by without either team making any headway into the dangerous territory.

Celtic launched a fierce counter in the 30th minute with Mukuka Mulenga and Musa Nyathama taking shots at the goalkeeper without luck.

Before the interval Thulani Hlatshwayo saw his miscued volley bounce wide of the target after a Siyabonga Nhlapo cross.

At half-time there was nothing separating the teams as scores were goalless.

Mulenga made full use of his bursting pace as he wiggled into the packed Wits defence but the ball was nicked from his toes.

In the 55th minute Musa Bilankulu made a dashing run near the edge of the box and laid a through-ball that had Nyatama flagged for offside after the defence held its line.

Wits’ attack spearheaded by Chris Katongo pushed the ball into the flanks but were denied space by Celtics.

Defender Dumsani Zuma made a crunching tackle on Wits striker Henrico Botes.

Playing at home in-front of their boisterous fans Celtic had a no-nonsense approach at the back as they refused to concede.

For some period in the second half Celtic was stuck in the Wits territory as they probed for a goal that would snatch victory.

In the 72nd minute veteran striker Katongo’s well-timed run beat the offside trap, but his side footer sailed past the goalmouth.

The opening goal came as a result of a lapse in concentration by the Celtic defence.

It had been a tight affair overall but Wits were persistent enough to wait until late in the match to make a dash with the points. – Sapa

Goalless draw for Ajax, SuperSport

Despite dominating in the second half Ajax had to settle for a point after a 0-0 draw with SuperSport on Sunday.

|||

Cape Town – Despite dominating second half proceedings, Ajax Cape Town had to settle for a point after playing out to a 0-0 draw with SuperSport United at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

Too many long balls went amiss as the likes of Nathan Paulse for Ajax and SuperSport’s Bradley Grobler were not able to effectively link up with their teammates.

There were no more than half chances from range for the most part, such as Ajax captain Travis Graham’s 37th minute miscued volley.

Paulse also went wide with a half volley on the turn, as well as with a header, while SuperSport defender Clayton Daniels flashed a header wide from David Mathebula’s free kick.

The best chance of the first half came in added time, but Dino Ndlovu was unable to find the accuracy with a thunderbolt of a left-footed shot from 25-yards out.

The Urban Warriors upped the intensity levels after the restart and went close after 47 minutes when SuperSport keeper Ronwen Williams had to react well to tip Bantu Mzwakali’s curling free kick around the post.

A fantastic cross-field ball from Abbubaker Mobara then released Cecil Lolo through on goal, but after making space to shoot, Lolo miscued his parting shot into the side-netting.

At the other end of the park Michael Morton was presented with a good opportunity in the Ajax box, but sent his shot straight at home keeper Anssi Jaakkola.

Ajax continued to pose questions of the Matsatsantsa defence and looked set to take the lead midway through the second half when Mzwakali arrived in the box to get on the end of a free kick, striking the ball powerfully, but straight at Williams.

SuperSport came close to a late winner when Mathebula’s 90th minute powerful drive hit the post before rebounding into Jaakolla, who was fortunate not to see the ball going off him and into the net. – Sapa

Carroll double lifts West Ham to third

Andy Carroll scored twice in West Ham’s 3-1 win on Sunday lifting the club to third on the ladder.

|||

London – England forward Andy Carroll scored twice in West Ham United’s 3-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday that lifted the London club to third in the Premier League.

The injury-prone Carroll, without a goal since March, headed West Ham level just before halftime after Wilfried Bony had put Swansea ahead against the run of play.

Carroll scored again early in the second half with another dominant header before top scorer Diafra Sakho lashed home a third as West Ham, one of this season’s surprise packages, registered their third successive league victory.

Swansea had goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski sent off after 68 minutes for impeding Sakho.

West Ham have 27 points, one ahead of fourth-placed Southampton and two clear of fifth-placed Manchester United who face each other on Monday.

WC boot scores $2.5m for kids

Mario Goetze’s World Cup-winning left boot has fetched $2.5m at a children’s charity gala in Germany.

Berlin – Mario Goetze’s World Cup-winning left shoe has fetched 2 million euros ($2.5m) at a children’s charity gala in Germany and is headed for a museum.

The Bayern Munich player scored Germany’s winning goal against Argentina with his left foot during extra time in the World Cup final in July.

Goetze had offered the boot to whoever made the highest bid during an annual charity gala, “A Heart for Children,” on ZDF public television on Saturday night. An anonymous donor coughed up the $2.5m.

Downs out to defy title race odds

The Downs are not bothered about other contenders as they attempt to beat the odds to retain the Premiership title.

|||

Johannesburg – Mamelodi Sundowns are unperturbed about the form of the other title contenders as they attempt to beat the odds and defend their Premiership title.

With 23 points Sundowns are second to log leaders Kaizer Chiefs who have 36 points.

Sundowns were too good for Free State Stars in their 2-0 win at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

Coach Pitso Mosimane said they had set a target for the season which was what mattered.

“As a club we have our own job to do and that’s all that we focusing on. We can’t worry about things we have no control over,” Mosimane said.

“Our objective is 65 points at the end of the season. We want to improve from last season to beat our own record.”

The Chiefs comprehensively beat perennial foes Orlando Pirates 2-0 at the FNB Stadium in the afternoon.

Later in the day in Pretoria, the victory catapulted Sundowns up the table, while for Stars it was their eighth loss that left them with 14 points.

Strikes in each half by Cuthbert Malajila and Khama Billiat secured the Brazilians’ second consecutive win and sixth overall in the league this season.

Sundowns were in control from the go as they pinned the visitors back in their own half with an early Malajila goal.

The Brazilians mounted pressure on Stars with superb interchange play of their attack minded players.

Mosimane praised the return to form of playmaker Billiat, who put on an impressive performance.

“I’m happy Khama is coming back and gaining confidence after struggling with injury. He is an important player for us and it’s good to see him getting onto the scoresheet.”

The former Bafana Bafana coach hailed his team for getting the job done.

“My players showed respect and integrity to get the win. We pressed the opposition from the start and I am pleased that we were able to get the points.”

Sundowns would be looking to use their upcoming games to regain the form that saw them power to the title.

“Next for us is to take the next four games to prepare for the Champions League. And I know Sundowns, once we catch fire it becomes a very difficult team to stop.”

With the Premiership near the halfway mark Sundowns aim to put themselves in a good position to fight for the championship next year.

“We just have to keep working hard and I am sure that the results will come. We are only now beginning to get going and I hope it continues.” Sundowns next assignment is against Pirates away from home on Wednesday. – Sapa

Chiefs, Bucs worlds apart

While the Amakhosi have proven they are the best, coach Stuart Baxter isn't leaving anything to chance.

|||

Johannesburg – While Kaizer Chiefs continue to blaze a trail through the Premiership uncontested, coach Stuart Baxter is plotting a way to keep his player’s mental focus in check.

Chiefs totally outclassed arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 2-0 at the FBN Stadium on Saturday.

With the Amakhosi having proven by some margin that they are the best team in the league so far, Baxter knows that the home-stretch remains some way off.

“There is still a long way to go before we can start celebrating because nothing has been won yet,” Baxter said.

In the comprehensive victory at the mecca of football in the country, Chiefs put on a show in the second half that put their foes to the sword.

Victory came courtesy of goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 51st minute and Siphelele Mthembu in injury time.

Baxter said their joy would be short-lived as they would turn their attention to their next match against Platinum Stars on Tuesday.

“Obviously we are very pleased with the derby win. But we have another tough game around the corner and we have to make sure we are ready for it.”

While Chiefs are revelling in the splendour of an impressive run of form, Pirates are still searching for their silver-lining.

With their former coach Vladimir Vermezovic having abandoned ship on the eve of the derby and dealing with the trauma of captain Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot dead in late October – the players have had a challenging season to say the least.

Against their old foe, the Buccaneers could not muster enough of a resistance to overcome the Chiefs freight train.

Chiefs are unbeaten in the league so far in 14 matches – having won 11 and drawn three.

Chief’ Tshabalala operated like a maestro in the midfield that the Pirates defence could not contain. The tricky winger and his teammates exploited the open spaces left by the disjointed Pirates defence.

A cagey first-half was followed by an exhilarating second that saw Chiefs shift gears and show their superiority.

The game came to life in the second half after the pep talks from the coaches at the interval.

Chiefs came out strong, with the intention to outplay their arch-rivals with a hard running style of play.

Tshabalala, Bernard Parker, Mandla Masango and Reneilwe Letsolonyane exposed the Pirates defence with their fluid play off the ball into dangerous spaces.

Caretaker coach Eric Tinkler, who took over from Vermezovic, was thrown into the deep end with a tough first assignment being the derby.

Tinkler admitted that these were trying times for the team.

“We have come through a very rough period of a month-and-a-half, the morale of the team has been very low,” Tinkler said.

“The confidence has been very low and it was important that we try to turn that around.”

Tinkler felt that his team’s lack of firepower allowed Chiefs to get settled into the game.

“Chiefs are a well-oiled machine and they have been playing well in the last couple of months.

“They have been creating a lot of chances and I felt they found a lot of pockets in our defence. At half time I also spoke about closing those spaces.”

With less than a week on the job, Tinkler said his task was to get the team to turn over a new lease on life.

“Now what’s left is to work hard at training to try and improve that morale and spirit and the belief, confidence that is lacking in the squad. It is important we bounce back as soon as possible.” – Sapa

Amakhosi unstoppable!

The Chiefs lived up to their name at FNB Stadium on Saturday tearing the Pirates to shreds.

|||

And still unbeaten and unstoppable! That’s the best way to sum up the football feast dished up after Kaizer Chiefs tore Orlando Pirates to shreds in a high-octane Soweto Derby here yesterday.

Indeed, Chiefs’ dream run this season continued unabated as they continue to build an unassailable lead at the summit of the Absa Premiership.

With their emphatic win over their bitter rivals courtesy of goals by Man of the Match Siphiwe Tshabalala and Siphelele Mthembu, Chiefs romped to their 11th win of the season and remain unbeaten after 14 matches. Chiefs now have 36 points.

Though Chiefs won, in the first half Pirates dominated.

However, the Buccaneers did not punish Chiefs when the log leaders were vulnerable.

Pirates simply failed to pull the trigger when they had Chiefs at their mercy.

Chiefs retreated deep in their own half and Pirates surged forward and a chance fell for Thandani Ntsumayelo but his shot was blocked by Erick Mathoho in the 10th minute.

Two minutes later, Amakhosi goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo was forced to pull off a brilliant save by punching the ball away from a dangerous cross from Pirates left-back Patrick Phungwayo. While Khuzwayo and his defence had a tough time thwarting the advances of Pirates, his opposite number, Brighton Mhlongo, had a relatively easy first half.

During that period, Chiefs were not enterprising and were limited to few chances.

The only opportunity that went their way was when Reneilwe Letsholonyane sent Siboniso Gaxa down the right and the defender put in a sweet cross that was met by Kingston Nkhatha whose header sailed inches over the bar.

Pirates’ lone striker Lehlohonolo Majoro, the one-time Chiefs man, rarely had a chance to breathe as defender Mathoho kept him in check.

Majoro’s teammates, however, were tops in the middle of the park.

Pirates’ moves were promising, but they did not bear any fruit.

It must have been agony for Bucs fans as pretty moves went astray.

One such saw Sifiso Myeni finding Daine Klate down the left and the winger offloaded to skipper Oupa Manyisa.

The man nicknamed “Ace” fired a shot but the Chiefs rearguard kept it out.

As Pirates grew in confidence, their attacks were more frequent.

In a counter-attack that exposed Chiefs’ weakness at the back, Majoro broke free down the left and spotted Ntshumayelo making a run in the middle. He obliged with a deft pass. Ntshamayelo challenged for the ball and took Letsholoyane out of the equation with impressive stopovers. But, alas, he found the wrong side of the net with his shot.

Chiefs played second fiddle but their fans woke up from their slumber to cheer after they almost had the lead when Bucs defender Rooi Mahamutsa headed just wide of his own posts from a Gaxa cross.

For the better part of the match Tshabalala was anonymous. And yet he showed his star quality when he emerged from nowhere to send the Chiefs fans into ecstasy.

It was a moment of sheer brilliance in the final third as Tshabalala fed Letsholonyane, who then found Bernard Parker on the edge of the box down the right and Parker put in a low cross that Tshabalala fired into the roof of the net beyond the reach of Mhlongo.

Tshabala’s goal, his first of the season, was reminiscent of the one he scored during the World Cup opener against Mexico four years ago at this venue.

Pirates brought in Mpho Makola and Kermit Erasmus to put some spark in attack, while Chiefs strengthened their defence with Morgan Gould coming in for Parker. A superb move initiated by substitute George Lebese was rounded off by former Buccaneer Siphelele Mthembu to make it 2-0.

In the end, it was a Derby of firsts. It was the first derby for Eric Tinkler in charge, for Mhlongo in the Bucs goal and first goals for Tshabalala and Mthembu.

Stars shine in clash with Birds

Stars coach Allan Freese is pleased with his side’s 1-0 victory over the Swallows on Saturday night.

|||

JOHANNESBURG – Platinum Stars coach Allan Freese was pleased with his side’s performance in their 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday night.

Ndumiso Mabena scored the only goal early in the first half and Dikwena held on to register a victory and put more misery on Swallows who are third from the bottom.

“The guys played well and I was pleased with the way we defended against Swallows,” Freese said.

“In the last two matches, we conceded five goals and only scored three. And against Swallows, there was a lot of improvement from the way we played and the way we defended.”

The win saw Dikwena move to 13th on the Absa Premiership log standings, with 14 points from 12 matches.

Freese has been under pressure to deliver after losing the Telkom Knockout final and losing to Polokwane City in a league match.

He admitted that he is relieved after getting the three points which moved them from the bottom.

“I’m hoping that now going forward, we will pick up points and move further away from the danger zone.

“But it is not going to be easy as we will play four matches before Christmas. The win is a motivation for us going forward and hopefully we can pick up more points in the next matches.”

Dikwena will now face log leaders, unbeaten Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, hoping to end Amakhosi’s impressive run this season.

Dikwena are the only team to have defeated Chiefs so far, when they dumped them out from the Telkom Knockout semifinal on penalties.

“Chiefs are coming off a big win in the Soweto derby, but the boys don’t need any motivation when they play big teams,” said Freese.

“It’s going to be tough, but we will approach the game differently and we will plan well for them.”

Dikwena may be without their skipper Vuyo Mere who got injured during the Swallows game and was substituted with the match just 14 minutes old.

“I hope the injury is not too bad, but we will monitor him.”

Swallows’ next match will be away to Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday. – Sapa

Mourinho defiant despite setback

Coach Jose Mourinho insists his side are still the team to beat despite seeing an end to their unbeaten run.

|||

Newcastle – Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists his side are still the team to beat despite the Premier League leaders seeing their unbeaten start to the season ended by Newcastle United.

Saturday's dramatic 2-1 setback against 10-man Newcastle, their first loss since April, saw Chelsea fall one game short of setting a club-record mark of 24 matches without defeat.

More damagingly, it allowed defending champions Manchester City to close to within three points of Mourinho's side by winning 1-0

at home to Everton.

But the Chelsea manager said he was relaxed after Papiss Cisse's brace condemned his team to a third consecutive defeat on Tyneside.

“We were unlucky and Newcastle had the luck, but I have no complaints towards my players and how they went about the game,” said Mourinho, whose side hit back through Didier Drogba.

“It's one defeat, but it's the kind of defeat which I can accept a little more, because I have no problem with the way my players played.

“It would have been so very difficult to go through the season unbeaten as so many people had suggested. But even after this defeat, we have to ask the other 19 teams in the Premier League if they'd like to be in our position? I think they would.

“We were unlucky, that's all. The best team lost. The team that tried to win lost. That's football. It's a lucky day for them, and an unlucky one for us, but that's how it goes sometimes.

“We conceded goals the only time they crossed the halfway line. I don't criticise their approach. You need luck to play that way and win, but they had and I have no problems with that.”

Mourinho was unhappy with what he saw as Newcastle's time-wasting tactics, even accusing their ball boys of being part of a strategy to run down the clock during the six minutes of added time.

“We wanted to play more football, but it wasn't possible due to a few things happening that I thought didn't belong to top-level football now,” he said.

“The ball comes, then the ball goes and the ball boys run away. The ball disappears, then when the replacement ball comes, the first one comes back as well.

“There should have been more stoppage time, but it's hard for the referee to keep track of.”

Victory for Newcastle, who were reduced to 10 men late on after a second yellow card for defender Steven Taylor, was the perfect way for manager Alan Pardew to celebrate his impending fourth anniversary at the club.

“I can't praise my players enough,” he said. “We've done the rest of the Premier League a favour by beating Chelsea. We've given everyone a gee-up and made it more interesting.

“It's a two-horse race between Chelsea and Manchester City, but this has made it more interesting.”

Rookie goalkeeper Jak Alnwick, 21, came off the bench at half-time for the injured Rob Elliot and played a pivotal role in the win on his senior debut.

“Robbie had been struggling and he hasn't really trained, so Jak was half-prepared to come on,” Pardew said.

“He showed nerves of steel and gave me so much confidence watching from the sidelines. He'll definitely win our cool dude award at the Christmas party. He's a north-east hero tonight.” – Sapa-AFP

Madrid – Cristiano Ronaldo netted a record 23rd hat-trick in La Liga and his 200th goal in the Spanish top flight as Real Madrid equalled the Spanish record of 18 consecutive wins in all competitions on Saturday.

Ronaldo scored all of his side’s goals in a 3-0 win over Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabeu to pass the hat-trick record of Telmo Zarra, whose record as La Liga’s all-time top goalscorer was recently usurped by Lionel Messi, and the late Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano, who both scored 22 hat-tricks.

And his third goal on the night saw him reach his double century of La Liga goals in just 179 games.

With 18 straight wins, Carlo Ancelotti’s side have now matched the record set by Frank Rijkaard’s Barcelona team in the 2005-06 season and will have their chance to create more history on Tuesday when they face Ludogorets Razgrad in their final Champions League group game. – Sapa-AFP
