News sport : Arizona star LB Scooby Wright says Cal told him to 'look at Sacramento State' during recruiting process

Linebacker Scooby Wright III #33 of the Arizona Wildcats watches the Territorial Cup college football game against the Arizona State Sun Devils. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) Coming out of Santa Rosa, California in the class of 2013, Scooby Wright had just one scholarship offer. For Arizona, that offer has certainly paid off.

Wright, who was ranked just a two-star recruit by the major recruiting services, committed to the Wildcats. Two years later, Wright racked up 139 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and six forced fumbles and was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year as a true sophomore.

During the recruiting process, Wright attended a camp at Cal. The feedback was not positive.

“They told me to go look at Sacramento State,” Wright said, per InsideBayArea.com.

The Cal staff, then under Jeff Tedford, told Wright he wasn’t “fast enough” or “strong enough.”

Cal wasn’t the only program to make that mistake. Schools like Washington and UCLA also showed interest in Wright, but did not offer.

Wright, who said the recruiting process was “really weird and stressful,” was unsure of his future until Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez offered him a scholarship.

"It was like, 'You mean, nobody is recruiting this guy?'" Rodriguez told the Associated Press of his reaction at the time. "It was one of those deals where you watch and you're like, 'He's got size, he's a tough guy, he runs around ... let's offer him and hope no one else does. Can we keep it a secret?'"

Now, Wright uses the snubs from other Pac-12 schools as motivation.

“It fuels me every day,” Wright said.

Wright will use that fuel as he and the Wildcats square off against Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Friday night.

News sport : Jayson Werth sentenced to 10 days in jail for reckless driving

(Getty Images) Playing outfield for the Washington Nationals and having a ferocious beard weren't enough to keep Jayson Werth out of jail.

Werth, 35, was sentenced to 10 days in jail Friday by a judge in Fairfax County, Virginia as penalty for a July 6 incident in which a state trooper clocked Werth driving 105 mph in his Porsche on Interstate 495. That's 50 mph over the speed limit.

From the Washington Post:

Werth testified during the trial that he didn’t know how fast he was going, but believed it was less than 100 mph. He was driving a two-door Porsche at the time of the offense, which occurred around 9:40 a.m. on a Sunday.

“It’s possible I exceeded 90 miles per hour,” Werth said in court.

Fairfax County General District Court Judge Penney Azcarate told Werth that “speed kills.”

“495 is not a racetrack,” Azcarate said, before sentencing Werth.

Werth's attorney says he plans to appeal the judge's decision. Meanwhile, reporter Julie Carey of NBC Washington says Werth should serve five days of his sentence.

They won't make him shave, right? That would be punishment for all of us.

News sport : Listen to the epic radio call of UCF's Hail Mary (Audio)

UCF pulled out an improbable win over East Carolina Thursday night on a Hail Mary pass from Justin Holman to Breshad Perriman.

It was a huge play for the Knights. Not only did the team improve to 9-3 with the win, it clinched a share of the American Athletic Conference title.

The Knights’ radio team certainly knew what was on the line and their awesome call of the play totally captures that.

The Hail Mary put the cap on what was a back and forth affair. UCF was up 26-9 in the fourth quarter, but ECU responded with 21 unanswered points to take the lead.

That set the scene for Perriman’s heroic catch as time expired and one of the best radio calls of the season.

News sport : Report: Rays hire Kevin Cash as their new manager

(USA TODAY Sports) The Tampa Bay Rays, the only MLB team without a manager, said they wanted to name their replacement for Joe Maddon before baseball's Winter Meetings. They barely made it.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Rays have chosen Kevin Cash to be their new skipper. He'll now be the youngest manager in MLB (he turns 37 on Saturday) after beating out Don Wakamatsu for the Rays' job. Raul Ibanez was the team's third finalist, but he pulled out of the running before his final interview.

The Rays haven't made the hire official, but they're sure to by the time the Winter Meetings start Monday.

Cash is looked at as a rising star within coaching circles. He played eight seasons in MLB with the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees, Astros and Rays (he knows the AL East, obviously). Cash was a back-up catcher, never playing more than 61 games in a season. He was a lifetime .183 hitter. But he's not getting hired for his stats as a player.

After he retired in 2011, Cash worked as a scout for the Blue Jays for one year and then joined Terry Francona's staff with the Indians as bullpen coach in 2012. That's when he quickly became a hot commodity. He was the runner-up for the Texas Rangers job earlier this year. But he wouldn't be a runner-up again.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes:

[Cash] is considered to have a sharp baseball mind, excellent people skills and a good grasp of analytics.

"Kevin cares about each player, not only as a player but as a person," Antonetti wrote in an email last week. "He works to connect individually with each guy to build a trusting relationship, understand the player's strengths, and think about ways to help him succeed. Beyond his extraordinary interpersonal skills, humility, and leadership qualities, Kevin is an avid learner that always seeks ways to improve. He constantly asks questions of those around him to learn from them to help him be a better coach.

Kevin Cash as a member of the Rays in 2005. (Getty Images)

Cash brings ties to the job beyond his 2005 season with the Rays. He was born in Tampa and played baseball at Florida State, playing in the College World Series in 1999. He also played for the Tampa Northside Little League World Series team in 1989.

It won't be easy to replace Joe Maddon, but it sounds like Tampa could learn to love Cash.

News sport : Report: Bowl eligible Big Ten team could miss bowl game

Oct 12, 2013; Madison, WI, USA; The Big Ten logo on the field at Camp Randall Stadium following the game between the Northwestern Wildcats and Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin won 35-6. (Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports) Could one of the Big Ten’s bowl eligible teams miss out on the postseason?

According to ESPN.com, the conference sent a memo on Wednesday to its athletic directors explaining that a scenario could arise where “there aren’t enough contracted bowl spots for every eligible team.”

This potential issue stems from the Big Ten’s agreement with the Capital One Orange Bowl. As of this season, the Orange Bowl pairs an ACC team against the highest-ranked non-conference champion from the SEC, Big Ten or Notre Dame. Michigan State could be that team, causing issues for the rest of the league’s bowl eligible teams.

From ESPN.com:

Michigan State, ranked No. 8 in Tuesday's College Football Playoff rankings, likely will head to the Orange Bowl if No. 1 Alabama wins the SEC championship game Saturday. The next highest-rated SEC team behind Alabama is No. 10 Mississippi State, but neither Michigan State nor Mississippi State plays before the final rankings and bowl pairings are set. If a Big Ten team goes to the Orange Bowl, the league will not have a team in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl. If only one other Big Ten team -- the league champion -- makes a Playoff semifinal or another New Year's Six bowl, the league would have eight eligible teams for seven contracted bowl spots.

Currently, there are 80 teams that have clinched bowl eligibility and only 76 spots. A few teams won’t make the cut and the Big Ten made sure to inform its members that it will not “interfere or influence” with the bowl contracts certain games have with other leagues.

"The conference will not interfere or influence our contract bowls' selection rights, nor does it have any control over the CFP," Mark Rudner, Big Ten senior associate commissioner for television administration, wrote to the athletic directors in the memo. "Unless a contract bowl selects a team that is over-exposed because of recent trips to the same bowl or same region, we will not interfere with the bowl's selection."

These circumstances could potentially impact teams like Maryland (7-5), Rutgers (7-5), Penn State (6-6) and Illinois (6-6).

News sport : Jim Harbaugh is Lloyd Carr's choice for next Michigan coach

Jan 1, 2014; Pasadena, CA, USA; Michigan Wolverines former coach and Rose Bowl hall of fame inductee Lloyd Carr at the 100th Rose Bowl. (Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports) With Brady Hoke out of the picture as of Tuesday, the Michigan coaching search is a few days under way. One man who knows a few things about coaching the Wolverines – former UM head coach Lloyd Carr – has one man in mind to lead the program into the future: current San Francisco 49ers head coach and former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh.

“Everyone has an opinion, and I am no different,” Carr said Thursday, per the Detroit News. “If I had a choice, I would choose Jim Harbaugh. But it will be (interim athletic director) Jim Hackett’s decision, and that is as it should be.”

Harbaugh is said to have had a somewhat tumultuous tenure with the 49ers. He’s in his fourth season with the franchise following his four-year stint as Stanford’s head coach from 2007-2010.

Harbaugh has been linked to the head-coaching gig at his alma mater for some time and seems to be a fan favorite to land the position. Carr knows him well. Carr, who was the head coach from 1995-2007, served as a defensive assistant when Harbaugh was in Ann Arbor from 1983-86. The endorsement from Carr is an important one in the Michigan community.

Still, with more than a month left in the NFL season, any Harbaugh-to-Michigan scenario would be down the road. In a week where Florida and Nebraska ended their coaching searches in very quick fashion, the Michigan fan base could understandably grow a bit impatient.

Former Michigan quarterback Brian Griese, now with ESPN, said Thursday that Michigan’s decision will be “a little more deliberate” than that of Nebraska’s.

"Jim Hackett, the athletic director is going to go through a more funneled process and whittle the candidates down,” Griese said. “Because of the fact he doesn't have a whole lot of experience or any experience in intercollege athletics in conducting a search for a new coach it's not going to be a (Florida athletic director) Jeremy Foley hop on a plane and sign somebody."

Balotelli charged by FA for Instagram post

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has been charged by the Football Association for a social media post, the FA said.

|||

London - Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has been charged by the Football Association for a social media post, the FA said on Friday.

The Italian forward apologised on Tuesday for his Instagram post, subsequently deleted, which appeared to contain potentially racist and anti-Semitic references.

“It is alleged the Liverpool player breached FA Rule E3 in that his posting was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper,” the FA said on their website.

“It is further alleged that this is an 'Aggravated Breach' as defined by FA Rule E3 as it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief.”

Balotelli has until December 15 to respond to the charge. - Reuters

News sport : Priority Pickups: Greivis, Nikola and another push for K.J. McDaniels

If, like me, you assembled a fantasy portfolio that left you unusually vulnerable to a DeMar DeRozan injury, then you've no doubt already scooped up this first dude...

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.25M Week 14 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 20,675 teams paid]

PG/SG Greivis Vasquez, Tor (33 percent owned)

Vasquez has started three straight for the Raps, with impressive enough results. He's averaging 16.0 points, 5.7 assists and 2.0 threes per night, with a steal in each game. At 30-plus minutes per, you'll enjoy Vasquez. His numbers may not quite reach 2012-13 levels, but he'll be plenty useful across multiple categories. DeRozan is likely down for 4-5 weeks, so Vasquez is something better than a short-range pickup. He has a pair of four-game weeks upcoming, too.

SG/SF K.J. McDaniels, Phi (43 percent owned)

OK, it's a little weird that McDaniels remains so widely available. We've written him up before, as has pretty much everyone else. It's tough to argue with his recent production:

KJ's game log

We're not talking about an all-world shooter here — he went 2-for-9 from the arc in Wednesday's win — but McDaniels is filling the stat sheet pretty much every night. The kid has blocked 11 shots over his last five games. He's averaging 1.4 blocks per game for the year, which ranks top-20 in the league. If you drafted bigs who don't pile up defensive goodies — guys like Z-Bo, Bosh and Blake — then McDaniels can certainly help cover your roster blemishes.

SF/PF Nikola Mirotic, Chi (28 percent owned)

As of this writing, Mirotic actually leads this season's rookie class in Player Efficiency Rating (16.6), and yet somehow he didn't even rate a mention in this clip...

I mean...c'mon, fellas. Is it the drifter's beard that makes you doubt him? Perhaps. Whatever your expectations had been for Mirotic, he'd clearly exceeded them, emerging as a useful rotational piece for the Bulls. He did not appear comfortable with the quickness and physicality of starting-caliber NBA players during early preseason action, but he's adjusted well over the past month. (OK, maybe he wasn't totally ready for this Kemba Walker cross, but, generally speaking, he's been solid.)

Mirotic has seen 20-plus minutes in seven straight games, reaching double-digits in scoring six times during that stretch. He's also averaging 8.4 boards, 1.4 threes and 1.4 blocks (and 8,000 shot-fakes) over his last seven, while shooting respectable percentages. It's fair to say that he's benefiting statistically from Taj Gibson's multi-game absence, sure, but you have to assume the Bulls would love to dial back the minutes for Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah. Gasol has played 86 minutes over his last two games, which seems less than ideal. It's easy to see a path to consistent minutes for Nikola.

SG Ben McLemore, Sac (31 percent owned)

McLemore doesn't offer much beyond points and threes (and occasional filthy highlights ), so he's not for everyone. But he's seeing 38-41 minutes per game, knocking down 40.0 percent of his three-point attempts and shooting 87.0 percent from the line. He can help, plus he plays four next week.

PF/C Marreese Speights, GS (28 percent owned)

Mo is averaging something like 197 points per 36 minutes to this point in the season (no, it's actually 28.2), which hardly seems sustainable. And yeah, the looming return of David Lee (hamstring) is a worry. But Speights is chasing shots and points whenever he's on the floor (21.3 FGA/36), and he's shooting at a 54.7 percent clip. Just look at this ridiculousness . He's rebounding at a respectable rate, too. Mo can surely help over his next three games (at Chi, at Min, vs. Hou), which takes us through Wednesday. At that point, we can reevaluate, based on fresh Dubs news.

News sport : Navy AD wasn't too happy Army couldn't make it to press conference

Amry and Navy were scheduled for a joint press conference on Wednesday before the annual game between the two on December 13. However, Army couldn't make it to the media event.

Army athletic director Boo Corrigan, coach Jeff Monken and players Larry Dixon and Joe Drummond were on a flight that was grounded because of thick fog in the area. The weather left Navy as the only team to answer questions in Baltimore.

A teleconference was scheduled for the msising Army participants, but Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk expressed his displeasure at their absence.

"I would be remiss if, with the appreciation I have for the city and the Ravens, I did not apologize for the other athletic director and the other head football coach not being here. It’s just unfortunate that they could not find a way to be here to be as respectful to you all as you’ve been to us, to make it down I-95 or whatever it takes to speak a little bit to the importance of this game,” Gladchuk said via the Annapolis Capital Gazette. “I don’t speak for Army, I don’t intend to speak for Army, I’ll never speak for Army, but I need to speak for the athletic directors who were very instrumental in bringing this contest to this facility and this city and I feel I owe you, at a minimum, an apology for the other contingent not being here.”

Corrigan said Army had no intention of skipping out on the press conference, which is a regular occurrence in the host city before the game that Navy has won 13 consecutive times. Army's last win was in 2001 and Navy now holds a 10-game lead in the history of the series.

“The intent was to be there. We all got up early, got shaven and everything else. We were ready to come, but we can’t control the weather," Corrigan said.

News sport : Georgia OL allegedly carries disorderly patron out of strip club

Georgia offensive lineman Zach DeBell carried a disruptive customer out of an Athens, Ga., strip club early Thursday morning per a police report of the incident.

Kirkland was then allegedly punched by the bouncer, Andrew Ho Kim, as he was outside the club and on his stomach. Both Kirkland and Kim were arrested.

News sport : Luke Donald had an on-course run-in with a baboon in South Africa

At a golf tournament, fans aren't supposed to go inside the ropes. Most humans know that. Baboons? Not so much.

Former world No. 1 Luke Donald had a run-in with a primate on Friday at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. After his tee shot found the fairway, Donald was walking up to his ball when he heard the baboon coming toward him from behind. The Englishman scurried to make way for the baboon, who may well have been trying to get a yardage for Donald.

The encounter didn't throw off Donald at all, who shot 9-under 63 in Round 2 to take a two-shot lead heading into what he hopes is weekend with no monkey business.

News sport : Nebraska DE bit by raccoon while trying to take picture with it

This raccoon did not want to be photographed.

While driving on Thursday, Nebraska defensive end Jack Gangwish saw a raccoon on the side of the road. So, like any one of us would do, he pulled over and decided he wanted to get his picture taken with it.

We'll let the Lincoln Journal-Star take it from there:

The 21-year-old got out of his 2002 Chevy Duramax pickup truck and tried to take a photo with the animal using his cellphone, but the raccoon attacked, biting Gangwish in the calf.

“It was a raccoon selfie gone completely wrong,” Gangwish said Thursday evening, laughing.

He posted a picture of the wound to Twitter and was having fun with the mishap.

He had the presence of mind to realize the raccoon should be tested for rabies, so he got a crescent wrench out of his car, though as he tried to subdue it, according to the paper, he would up bringing it to its demise.

The raccoon's body is currently being tested.

Gangwish had 18 tackles in 11 games this season for the Huskers. We sincerely hope the raccoon doesn't have rabies, though do think Gangwish faking rabies on the field in Nebraska's bowl game would be a very solid intimidation tactic.

News sport : Arian Foster goes British in interview

Orchestrated press conferences are generally dull affairs, cut-and-dried "talk about ... " and "what does it mean ... ?" question-and-answer sessions that both players and media could do in their sleep. So a tip o' the bowler to the Houston Texans' Arian Foster, who decided to do his weekly press conference in a wobbly but passable British accent.

You can hear snippets above and the full version below. It's sort of Sid Vicious meets Crocodile Dundee, as imitated by Dick Van Dyke in "Mary Poppins." Benedict Cumberbatch has nothing to worry about.

Best part? When some reporter offers up an Australian "mate," and Foster replies, deadpan and American, "I'm going for England here, bruh." Here's the full version:

Liverpool hoping to continue revival

Brendan Rodgers admits Liverpool hit rock bottom last month but the Reds manager is confident surviving such a tumultuous period will be the making of his players.

|||

Liverpool – Brendan Rodgers admits Liverpool hit rock bottom last month but the Reds manager is confident surviving such a tumultuous period will be the making of his players.

Rodgers' side lost three successive Premier League matches for the first time in his two-and-a-half-year reign as a nightmare run threatened to ruin Liverpool's season.

The former Swansea boss found himself under pressure as a result, with questions from fans and media over whether he was the right man to lead Liverpool out of the crisis.

But the Reds responded positively to end November with a battling 2-2 Champions League draw against Bulgarian side Ludogorets and then a 1-0 league win over Stoke last weekend.

Liverpool followed that with a more convincing 3-1 victory at Leicester in midweek and Rodgers says morale at Anfield has improved significantly ahead of Saturday's home clash with Sunderland.

“We were at a low as everyone saw,” Rodgers said. “We had set such high standards here over the past couple of years and we had fallen way below that.

“I felt the performance levels weren't quite right. But I felt the change after that. I felt that could be the making of us.

“Our last two performances have shown we have got that character.

“That period where we hadn't won, we had some decent performances but ultimately we're in the business of winning.”

Liverpool now face a defining month as they look to make up ground in the Premier League starting with the visit of Sunderland, before matches against Manchester United and Arsenal.

They also face Swiss side FC Basel knowing victory is required to reach the last 16 of the Champions League next week, and travel to Bournemouth in the League Cup quarter-finals a week after that.

“The feeling is certainly different now,” Rodgers added. “For us we just need to go game by game. That's how you build runs and momentum.

“It was the same last year when we won 11 games in a row. The feeling now is much different on the training field and in the changing room.”

Liverpool are still without Italian striker Mario Balotelli (groin) and will assess knee injuries picked up by midfielder Philippe Coutinho and left-back Jose Enrique.

Long-term absentees Daniel Sturridge (thigh), Mamadou Sakho (hip) and Jon Flanagan (knee) all remain on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Gus Poyet says his side must show the right kind of mentality as they look to end their long winless run at Anfield.

The Black Cats haven't beaten Liverpool on Merseyside since October 1983, and are intent on bouncing back quickly from the 4-1

midweek home defeat to Manchester City that left them two points above the relegation zone.

Poyet, whose side have won one of their last seven games, is set to ring the changes as his squad faces the third of the Premier League's four Champions League sides in succession.

“I'm trying to create a new mentality here. I need to get people to break away from the idea that just because we're playing a top team that we can accept a defeat,” Poyet said.

“I don't see how you can convince yourself you're going to win a game if you think it doesn't matter if you lose.

“It's a mental thing, and the more the players get the idea that we can't accept defeat to anyone, the easier it becomes to approach each game with a belief we can win.”

Winger Adam Johnson, centre-back Wes Brown and midfielder Jordi Gomez are set to return to the starting line-up after missing out against City.

Will Buckley, Sebastian Coates, and Jack Rodwell are the players expected to make way. – Sapa-AFP
