Vermezovic quits as Pirates coach

Following his team's recent defeat, Vladimir Vermezovic has resigned as coach of Orlando Pirates.

|||

Johannesburg – Vladimir Vermezovic resigned as coach of Orlando Pirates, the club announced.

“Orlando Pirates head coach Vladimir Vermezovic has today submitted his resignation from the club,” Orlando Pirates Football Club said in a statement on its website.

“VV provided the club with a thirty day notice period as required by labour law in South Africa. Orlando Pirates has accepted VV’s resignation.”

Vermezovic was pelted with missiles by disgruntled supporters after the 2-1 Premiership loss to Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday.

Club chairman Irvin Khoza said the club's results were high on the agenda. The latest defeat left Pirates sixth on the log, 10

points off the pace-setting Kaizer Chiefs after 12 games.

“We have accepted VV’s resignation,” said Khoza.

“The stability of the team is always a pressing priority. Eric Tinkler will again assume the role of caretaker coach until the end of the 2014/2015 season.

“I will sit down with VV in an exit interview to hear him out,” Khoza said.

“I naturally wished that he stayed longer and had more success at Orlando Pirates.” – Sapa

News sport : Vanderbilt fires offensive coordinator Karl Dorrell, two other coaches

Vanderbilt has parted ways with offensive coordinator Karl Dorrell, wide receivers coach Marc Lubick and strength coach Bill Hughan, the school announced Wednesday.

All three had spent just one season under first-year head coach Derek Mason.

Vanderbilt had one of the worst offenses in the country. It ranked 112nd in total yards, 112th in rushing and 106th in passing.

Dorrell also was in charge of a quarterbacking group that cycled through four different starters this past season and more than one quarterback appeared in eight of the Commodores 12 games this season.

As the quarterback position suffered, so did the receivers. The team ranked 121st in passing efficiency and the receivers had just one catch of more than 40 yards.

"I have great respect for Karl, Marc and Bill and appreciate their contributions to our program," Mason said in a statement in a university press release. "They are men of character and excellent coaches. I wish each of them nothing but success in the future."

Vanderbilt finished last in the SEC in scoring offense and total offense.

News sport : Richard Hamilton on playing for Tom Thibodeau: 'Practice was tough'

Richard Hamilton and the Chicago Bulls never really clicked. More specifically, Richard Hamilton and Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau never really clicked.

Hamilton was signed to great fanfare in the late autumn of 2011 after being bought out by the Detroit Pistons. His floor spacing and off-ball movement should have fit in seamlessly on a Bulls team featuring a similarly active Luol Deng, Joakim Noah, and a pre-injury Derrick Rose. Hamilton’s contributions faltered in his two seasons with the team, however, and his role continued to shrink to the point to where he was sitting out entire playoff games despite the Bulls being woefully shorthanded on the perimeter due to injury.

The Bulls eventually waived Hamilton using the stretch provision, paying him to go away. Though he’s not coming off as particularly nasty in a recent interview with Mike McGraw of the Arlington Heights Daily Herald, Hamilton isn’t exactly fondly recalling his time with the team:

"When I played there, practice was tough," said Hamilton, who spent two seasons with the Bulls from 2011-13. "I never experienced anything like that until I actually got to Chicago. It's well-documented that practices are a little too long, they're a little too hard and things like that.

"So if you want Derrick [Rose] (healthy) for the whole year, you've got to protect him. You've got to protect his body. When you know it's game time, 'You know what? We're not going to play him 35, 40 minutes a game. It might be 20 minutes a game.'”

Derrick Rose’s minutes are down this year, to 26.5 a game, and he’s sat out seven of 17 games while nursing ankle and hamstring injuries. Tom Thibodeau has also saw fit to play Rose in more than one game that he should never have played in, however, and overuse issues still abound for these Bulls.

“These Bulls” were built, ostensibly, to work deep into the playoffs. If these Bulls made the NBA Finals this season, those Finals would tip off six full months from right now. Right now, these Bulls are in the middle of a back-to-back pair of games. Right now, Bulls center (forget where they list him, he’s their center) Pau Gasol is coming off of a contest that saw Tom Thibodeau play him 50 minutes in a loss to Dallas. Right now, Pau Gasol is 34 years old, and he’s coming off of two injury-plagued seasons.

Now, Gasol looks healthy and he played terrific, thumbs-up basketball for the Bulls on Tuesday – 29 points, with 14 rebounds. Also, the contest against Dallas went into two overtimes, and the Bulls badly needed Gasol out there for those extra 10 minutes.

Those extra ten minutes, however, came after 34-year old Pau Gasol played 40 minutes in the first night of a back-to-back during regulation. Yes, injured forwards Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott played into those ticks, but Tom Thibodeau has to find a better way to manage these things. Sometimes not playing your best players is the best way to get the best out of your best players.

Pau Gasol, because he’s Pau Gasol, doesn’t seem to mind. From a discussion with Sean Highkin at Bleacher Report:

“Everybody is fatigued,” he said. “In that situation, both teams are playing under the same conditions. I would feel better if we had gotten the win.”

That’s fine, in reference to what the Dallas Mavericks are going through on Dec. 2 while in Chicago for one night. What about the sorts of players Chicago wants to play in late May or June? Kevin Love has played 40 minutes in a game just once this year, and that was in an overtime contest. The San Antonio Spurs routinely rest players. Kevin Durant just had a month off of his feet. Even Pau’s younger brother Marc plays fewer minutes than him, and he might be the league’s MVP thus far.

This isn’t even getting into the practices, practices that Rip Hamilton told the Daily Herald were the first ever that he had to tape for and take on ice therapy afterward.

It’s a long season. Everyone needs a reminder, sometimes.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 31 Cole Whitt

After doing exit interviews for Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2013, we're turning the tables. We want the drivers to sell themselves. So here are the resumés for all full-time Sprint Cup Series drivers in 2014. Then, at the end, we'll provide a summation of the driver's season in 150 words or less.

Name: Cole Whitt

NASCAR Experience: A full season in the Sprint Cup Series and parts of three others plus Nationwide experience, most notably with JR Motorsports. Also ran a full season in the Truck Series in 2011.

Most recent team: BK Racing

Most recent season finish: 31st

2014 accomplishments: Best finish was at Talladega in the fall. Backed that 15th up with an 18th at Martinsville the next week, posting back-to-back top 20s for the first time. Also finished 18th at Auto Club Speedway and 21st at Talladega in the spring.

Most memorable moment: Surviving the fall of Swan Racing. Swan started the season with two cars, but after folding, was able to find a ride with BK Racing for the rest of the year and ended up the best-performing driver on the team.

Strengths: The ability to survive in the sport and did the JR Motorsports thing come up?

2015 goals: Keep plugging and break into the top 30. And high-level sponsorship would be good too.

FTM's Take: Does anyone remember Whitt's 2011 full-season run in the Truck Series? That was helped by Red Bull, and while Whitt latched on to JR Motorsports for 2012 after Red Bull left NASCAR, it's been a struggle since he didn't have a ride at JRM because of a lack of sponsorship. Whitt has driven for five Sprint Cup Series teams since first getting a ride at the end of 2011. Is Front Row his sixth?

Former Virginia starting quarterback David Watford has decided to transfer.

Watford, who graduates in December, was granted his release so he could find a new school where he could finish his eligibility immediately.

Watford was Virginia’s starting quarterback in 2013, but was passed on the depth chart this season by redshirt sophomores Greyson Lambert and Matt Johns.

Watford was 2-10 as a starter last year and threw for 2,202 yards, eight touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

He appeared in just four games this season, including two as a wide receiver while the Cavaliers struggled with depth due to injuries.

Vermezovic puzzled after defeat

Orlando Pirates head into the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs on the back foot after their defeat to Maritzburg United.

|||

Johannesburg – Orlando Pirates coach Vladimir Vermezovic remains dissatisfied with his team's form following their 2-1 defeat to Maritzburg United on Tuesday.

“I don't understand how a team with so much experience can concede a goal in the second minute and 45th minute, before half-time. That's unacceptable for me,” Vermezovic said.

Pirates head into the much-anticipated clash against Kaizer Chiefs on the back foot after they were trumped at home.

To the fury of the Buccaneers fans, the team was comprehensively beaten by United at the FNB Stadium. Mohammed Anas scored a first-half brace that compounded misery on the Premiership heavyweights.

Kermit Erasmus's strike in the 33rd minute failed to spur the team on to victory.

After the defeat, Vermezovic was pelted with objects by a disgruntled group of supporters at the stadium who called for his dismissal.

Chants of “you must go” echoed as the Serbian-born coach left the field after the Buccaneers suffered their fourth loss of the season in the league.

Vermezovic lamented the thankless job of a coach.

“It's always the coach who is guilty when things go wrong,” he said.

“When things are good it is the players. This was a game with too many mistakes. We must go on and focus on the next game. We have a few days to prepare now for the Chiefs game.”

Vermezovic said he would not be consumed by the demands of disillusioned fans and would focus on preparing for the derby.

“I'm doing my job in my way and if it is not enough then somebody must decide it. So we will see what happens.

“It's normal for supporters to be unhappy when the team loses the game. The first thing that comes to their mind is the coach.”

Anas combined early with his team-mates for the opening goal in the second minute of play. During the match, Pirates appeared to be running around aimlessly.

While Pirates continued to probe, the visitors were happy to sit back and frustrate the opposition.

The Soweto giants continued to graft and their efforts finally paid off when the front-line combined for the equaliser.

Minutes later Anas stole Pirates' thunder with another goal that ensured United went into the break on top.

United coach Steve Komphela said the win could be attributed to his team executing their tactical master-plan to perfection.

“We could not expose our defenders to one-on-ones. Each time their wingers got the ball we reinforced the defence,” Komphela said.

The former Bafana Bafana mentor praised his players' mental strength and fitness.

“You cannot defend for so long without the right physical conditioning because it takes a strong mental capacity to do so, which is why all along we have been striving for a strong mind,” Khompela said.

“The players showed a willingness to bounce back.” – Sapa

News sport : Why did a referee completely ignore Derek Fisher's attempts to call a timeout? (Video)

On Tuesday night, a self-proclaimed “superfan” named Jeffrey Gamblero was ejected from Madison Square Garden for reportedly “obnoxiously” rooting for his beloved Brooklyn Nets to beat the New York Knicks. He also reportedly dared MSG security to eject him by taking his prosthetic leg off and placing it on his head, which is the only reason several news outlets are picking up on the story. Fans are ejected from NBA games all the time, nightly even, and the only reason this “story” is getting any traction is because this fan is slightly different than all the other louts who are tossed out.

The real story, as is usually the case, came on the court. Or slightly off of it, to be exact.

Late in the fourth quarter of the Nets/Knicks contest, New York had the ball and a chance to tie the game with the team down three. Derek Fisher, the Knicks’ rookie coach, ran down the sideline and even past the coach’s allotted standin’ box to signal for a timeout, as referee Mark Lindsay appeared to observe. Lindsay, weirdly, did not award New York with a timeout, and an unknowing Carmelo Anthony missed what could have been a game-winning three-pointer seconds afterward.

Watch:

One can debate Fisher’s control over his own team, or the tactical gains to not calling a timeout all one wants. Debate away, one. What’s most damning here is the referee’s role in this. Why weren’t Fisher’s pleas listened to?

Fisher, via the New York Daily News, says Lindsay gave him no great satisfaction following the play:

“He said he didn’t see it,” Fisher said after speaking briefly with Lindsay. “I can’t tell what he did or didn’t see. I was signaling.”

It’s a new’ish rule, but coaches can call timeouts in this league, and it boggles the mind as to why Lindsay did not listen to Fisher as Carmelo drove. Just because Carmelo Anthony wasn’t on the same page as Fisher, and just because Fisher is the rookie coach of a terrible team, it doesn’t mean the referee gets to make a judgment call and ignore what should be an automatic whistle. Fisher tried to hit pause on the game, and everything should have frozen the second he yelled “timeout.”

Back to that debate.

As the Chicago Bulls sadly learned on Tuesday night, sometimes the best chance a team has at tying a game while down three points is to run a pell mell play right to the three-point arc. Had the Knicks been granted what their coach was asking for, the Nets could have fouled any Knick shooter on the ensuing play prior to his shot, sending him to the line for two shots and depriving them of their chance at a three-pointer.

Carmelo Anthony takes quite a few three-pointers, over four a game, but he shoots around the league average. With that in place, statistically he remains one of the game’s great clutch shooters despite missing seven fourth quarter shots on Tuesday, and he created a good look for himself. Why Alan Anderson wasn’t crowding him behind the arc, forcing him to drive, is beyond me. Why Anderson even let him get to that point without fouling him is probably beyond Nets coach Lionel Hollins.

Fisher told the press he had “no problem” with Anthony deciding to take the game into his own hands, and that should be the case.

Anthony, meanwhile, says he had no idea Fisher wanted a timeout:

“I thought that was a great look,” Anthony said. “I got the ball, looked over. I didn’t see anything or anybody calling timeout so I kept going. I didn’t want them to get a chance to set up, switch or trap. I got a clean one on one shot and I took it.”

This would be the right move, as Lindsay was the one looking directly at Fisher, while Anthony was looking up court. Still, Carmelo was right next to Lindsay for about 20 feet of his 60-foot jaunt up court, which meant he was just a few feet away from Fisher as his coach attempting to call timeout. It seems a bit odd that he decided to go his own way after likely hearing Derek Fisher demand that time be called.

That’s the story here. Not some dingbat getting tossed from a game.

News sport : Browns pick Brian Hoyer to start, and that's the right move

Johnny Fever is contagious, and Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine momentarily came down with it too.

Pettine considered starting Johnny Manziel this Sunday against Indianapolis, and presumably for the rest of the season. Longtime Browns beat writers listened to Pettine after Sunday’s game at Buffalo, in which Manziel came in and led a late touchdown drive, and thought he was leaning towards giving Manziel the start. It would have been a lot more fun to talk about and watch the Browns the rest of the season with the rookie leading a playoff push.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.25M Week 14 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 20,675 teams paid]

Cooler heads prevailed. Pettine will go with Brian Hoyer at quarterback, just as he has for the first 12 games, according to multiple reports. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer was the first to report the news.

How boring. But, it’s the right move.

It’s not likely that Manziel would be able to run a full offense for the Browns down the stretch. He is the rare first-round quarterback who really does need a year to sit and learn. The Browns don’t want to set him back now, because just look at Washington’s conundrum with Robert Griffin III. Then add in the pressure of a rare Browns playoff race on Manziel’s shoulders, and it just wasn’t the right time.

Hoyer hasn’t been very good lately either, not even with the return of Josh Gordon two weeks ago, but he gives the Browns the best chance to right the ship and win now. The chances of the Hoyer from September re-emerging after a high-profile benching last week are better than Manziel taking over the NFL over the last month of his rookie season. Manziel can improvise and make great plays but it’s unlikely he’s ready to do so on a consistent basis. The fact that the Bills let him drive downfield in a 20-3 game, when they probably hadn’t prepared a lick for him (Manziel had played just five snaps all season before he got in) wasn’t a sign that he was ready to carry the Browns to the playoffs. It was just a fun highlight, although it wasn’t hard to get swept up in the excitement.

Pettine made the prudent choice. It’s not fun but it was right. However, if Hoyer throws a couple of first-half interceptions on Sunday …

News sport : Bills will no longer play in Toronto

The Buffalo Bills have brought an end to their six-year experiment playing one home game a year in Toronto, negotiating a buyout four years early.

The move was no surprise, for multiple reasons. The Bills are 1-5 in the series' six games. Attendance ranged from spotty to awful, with many games featuring a majority of the opposing team's fans. And new Bills owner Terry Pegula bought the team with a promise to keep it in Buffalo, despite rumors of the team's move to Canada depending on the owner.

"We greatly appreciate the support we've received over the past seven years from all of the tremendous people at Rogers Communications," Bills president Russ Brandon said in a statement released by the team Wednesday. "We will continue to work hard to solidify our footprint in southern Ontario."

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.25M Week 14 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 20,675 teams paid]

The Bills initially received $78 million to play eight games, five regular-season and three preseason, in the Rogers Centre, far more than the team would have received were those games played in Buffalo. However, that payday resulted in higher ticket prices, averaging $180 a game, which in turn resulted in poor attendance. The series bottomed out last year with a game against the Atlanta Falcons which had an attendance count of 38,969.

News sport : Will Muschamp reportedly offered Auburn defensive coordinator job

Will Muschamp can be Auburn's defensive coordinator if he wants the job.

According to AuburnSports.com, the former Florida coach has been offered the defensive coordinator position with the Tigers. Ellis Johnson parted ways with the school on Sunday.

From Auburn Sports:

Sources say Muschamp also has received a lucrative offer from Texas A&M, which fired defensive coordinator Mark Snyder on Sunday. Auburn has assured Muschamp that it will compete with any offer made by a university program, though at least two NFL organizations have contacted him with provisional offers.

Gus Malzahn doesn't want to pressure Muschamp and is willing to give him time to plot his next move. Muschamp hasn't given any of his suitors meaningful information regarding his personal, long-term plan.

A&M dismissed Snyder on Friday, a day after losing to LSU on Thanksgiving. Florida announced that Muschamp wouldn't be returning after losing to South Carolina at home on November 15. The two SEC schools have become the leading suitors for Muschamp's services as a defensive coordinator, and his arrival will raise the perception of whichever team he joins.

Before becoming Texas' defensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting prior to being hired as Florida's head coach, Muschamp was Auburn's defensive coordinator for two seasons in 2006 and 2007.

If Muschamp doesn't go to Auburn, Auburn Sports lists UAB coach Bill Clark and Memphis defensive coordinator Barry Odom as possible candidates as well. UAB is shutting down football at the end of the school year.

Auburn's defense was No. 57 in the NCAA's total defense ranking in 2014 and gave up more than 30 points in five straight SEC games, including a 55-44 loss to Alabama to end the regular season.

News sport : 2014 Driver Reviews: No. 32 David Ragan

Name: David Ragan

NASCAR Experience: 290 starts in the Sprint Cup Series over nine seasons plus over 100 starts in the Nationwide Series.

Most recent team: Front Row Motorsports

Most recent season finish: 32nd

2014 accomplishments: Got a top 10 at Martinsville in the fall and finished in the top 20 at both Pocono races. Completed 600 miles more than in 2013.

Most memorable moment: Remember the Talladega win in 2013? How could you forget? That win meant an an automatic bid to the Sprint All-Star Race in May.

Oh, and the ability to go places in a firesuit.

Strengths: Has proven mettle on restrictor plate tracks with two career Sprint Cup Series wins. Still under 30 years old and will be entering 10th Sprint Cup Series season in 2015.

2015 goals: Get into the top 25 in points and finish in the top 10 at more than one race for a potential opportunity at a bigger team again. Replicate Talladega 2013 if possible. If not possible, watch replays of Talladega 2013 on an endless loop.

FTM's Take: While Ragan did complete more miles in 2014, he had five fewer lead lap finishes and the top 10 at Martinsville was a strategy move that worked out. He also dropped from 28th in the standings in 2013. While Front Row will never be near the top of the Ford heap, Ragan needs to bump his performance in 2015 if he's to be considered for a mid-level ride in the future.

News sport : Miami athletic director reiterates support for Al Golden

Despite a late-season slide, Miami is sticking beside coach Al Golden.

On Tuesday, athletic director Blake James told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that “As I said last week, Al Golden is our coach and will continue to be our coach."

Questions about Golden's future arose as the Hurricanes ended the season with three straight losses to Florida State, Virginia and Pittsburgh.

The loss to Pitt was a 35-23 loss at home and put Miami at 6-6 on the season. Before losing three straight games, Miami had won three straight over Cincinnati, Virginia Tech and North Carolina.

Golden has been at Miami for four seasons and is 28-21 overall with a 16-16 mark in the ACC. He's finished 3-5 in two years in the ACC (including in 2014, as the Hurricanes finished in a tie for fifth in the Coastal Division) and 5-3 in two seasons. Last year, Miami went to the Russell Athletic Bowl and lost to Louisville.

As Miami was 3-3 and preparing to play Cincinnati, someone ponied up for a banner asking for Golden's dismissal to be flown over Sun Life Stadium.

News sport : Hawaii broadcaster apologizes for Fresno State comment

A broadcaster for Hawaii apologized for a comment he made near the end of the broadcast of Hawaii's game against Fresno State on Saturday night.

The game, at Fresno State, was broadcast on Oceanic Sports and the play-by-play broadcaster was Robert Kekaula, a broadcaster for Hawaii since 2011. As he was signing off, Kekaula said "Good night from the armpit of America."

After finding out about Kekaula's comment, Fresno State contacted Oceanic Sports and Kekaula wrote an apology letter to the school and said he was making a joke with a statistician.

From the Fresno Bee:

“No excuses, that was wrong of me to say,” Kekaula said. “I’d like to offer my sincerest apologies to all of Bulldog Nation, to Fresno State President Joseph Castro, head football coach Tim DeRuyter and the always hospitable people of Fresno.

“There is no excuse for my action, and no defense I could make for what I uttered. I did mention in our broadcast, and have always felt, that Fresno State is, by a long shot, both the best and toughest place to play football in the Mountain West Conference. The fans at Bulldog Stadium are awesome. ...

“Nonetheless, my actions and my words, no matter the intent, were wrong. I offended some people, and to them … to all really … I’m sorry. Please accept my sincere apology.”

Hawaii lost the game 28-21 to drop to 4-9 on the season.

Entering the game, there was a scenario where Hawaii could have won a three-way tie at 4-4 atop the West Division of the Mountain West if the Warriors beat Fresno State and UNLV beat Nevada. Neither of those things happened, and Fresno State will play Boise State Saturday night for the MWC title.

News sport : Manziel might 'pronounce' play wrong, but Browns would have his back

We still don't know which quarterback Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine will choose in Week 14 as the 7-5 Browns fight for a playoff spot in a game against the Indianapolis Colts.

But if the choice is highly touted but roundly unpredictable rookie Johnny Manziel, his Browns teammates will be ready to support him.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.25M Week 14 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 20,675 teams paid]

Via the Cleveland Plain Dealer, receiver Travis Benjamin said a switch from Brian Hoyer would mean that the players would have to raise their games collectively, knowing that with Manziel everything might not be perfectly clean.

"We just figure, as receivers, we have to work more," Benjamin said. "If Johnny comes in the huddle and he pronounces the play wrong, we've got to make sure we correct it. We've got to make sure we correct him. Offensive linemen, tight ends, all the receivers, all the running backs, we've just got to make sure we've got to be in form when he's in the game."

It's December. Has he not figured out how to "pronounce" plays by now?

[Tale of the Tape: Brian Hoyer vs. Johnny Manziel]

No matter — either way, Benjamin, like many of his teammates are, is occasionally in awe of the rookie's playmaking ability.

"Johnny is a baller, no matter what," Benjamin said. "Ready or not, you put him in the game and if he doesn't make the play with his arm, he'll make the play with his legs. Running backs, receivers, tight ends and linemen also have to come together and help him and make sure we have limited mistakes so we can push Johnny to get the edge on people."

That said, Browns players find themselves in a slightly awkward situation. They support Hoyer, who has helped them get into a position of contention, just on the outskirts of the postseason field. And yet he has struggled of late while Manziel energized the team in Sunday's loss against the Buffalo Bills — unable to rally the team but able to plant a seed in everyone's head: Should Pettine have inserted Manziel a bit sooner in the loss?

"It's no Team Johnny or Team Hoyer," Benjamin said. "We just, as a team, as a unit, want the best for the offense. Even though they go with Johnny or go with Hoyer, we as a receiver group know we still have to catch the ball and we still have to block."

Still, there is this sense of wonder that surrounds the rookie, even if he still has his warts. Even his Browns teammates appear to be enchanted by the Manziel spell a bit.

"I was excited to see him get a chance to show the league what he can do," Browns defensive end Billy Winn said. "He went out there and made everything come to life."

And we'll soon find out if Pettine goes with the kid and his magic wand.
