De Gea transfer hits stumbling block

Manchester United's Spain goalkeeper David De Gea was facing an uncertain future after his expected move to Real Madrid was apparently scuppered.

|||

Madrid - Manchester United's Spain goalkeeper David De Gea was facing an uncertain future on Tuesday after his expected move to Real Madrid was apparently scuppered when the paperwork did not arrive at the Spanish league on time.

As the clock ticked towards the midnight local time deadline on Monday, media reports said Real and United had reached a deal for De Gea to return to La Liga, with Real's Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas going the other way.

However, when Spain's professional league (LaLiga) declared the transfer window shut there was still no official confirmation and reports later said that although De Gea had signed his new contract, the relevant documents had not arrived in time for him to be registered.

Fifa rules state that players can only be registered during one of two annual transfer periods - the other is in January - with the exception being if their contract has expired before the end of a registration period.

Sports daily As quoted unidentified Spanish league sources as saying the paperwork had not been delivered until 28 minutes past midnight, while rival paper Marca reported that Real had proof the paperwork arrived at one minute before midnight and were still expecting the transfer to go through.

As things stand, however, De Gea, whose deal with United expires at the end of the season, could find himself out in the cold, at least until the end of the year.

As the transfer saga rumbled on, United coach Louis van Gaal left the 24-year-old former Atletico Madrid keeper out of the squad for the Premier League club's opening games of the season, with Argentina international Sergio Romero playing instead.

Real want De Gea as a long-term replacement for his Spain team mate Iker Casillas, the former club captain who joined Porto in July.

De Gea was selected last week for Spain's forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia although coach Vicente Del Bosque hinted he could lose his place in the squad if his club situation remained unresolved. – Reuters

Hernandez makes Leverkusen switch

Bayer Leverkusen signed Mexico striker Javier Hernandez from Manchester United for a reported fee of £7.3 million.

|||

Bayer Leverkusen signed Mexico striker Javier Hernandez from Manchester United for a reported fee of £7.3 million ($11 million, 9.9 million euros) on Monday.

Hernandez, who spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, agreed a three-year contract with the Bundesliga club just in time to beat the deadline on the last day of the German transfer window.

The 27-year-old was on the bench for United's 2-1 defeat at Swansea City on Sunday, but he hadn't started for the Premier League team for more than a year.

He returned to United in the close-season after scoring nine goals during his spell with Real, including the winner in their Champions League quarter-final against rivals Atletico Madrid, but manager Louis van Gaal has allowed him to leave permanently this time.

“I know two of the biggest leagues in Europe in the English Premier League and the Primera Division in Spain and now I want to experience the Bundesliga,” Hernandez told Leverkusen's website.

“I've heard a lot about the fantastic stadia in Germany and about the unique fans they have there.

“The Bundesliga is an extremely attack-minded league and it's particularly enticing for me.

“It's fantastic that I can now play for a club like Leverkusen, who are obviously known to me from the Champions League.

“Bayer Leverkusen is a big opportunity for me and I can and want to achieve a lot here.”

Leverkusen were drawn alongside Barcelona, Roma and BATE Borisov in Group E of the Champions League last week and Hernandez is being relied on to help the his new side make an impact in Europe's elite club competition.

The club's general manager Michael Schade said: “After we finally secured our place in the Champions League, we wanted to send out a clear signal with our attack, and we've succeeded in doing this with Javier Hernandez.”

Hernandez scored 59 goals in 156 appearances for United after signing from Chivas in 2010 and won the Premier League title in 2011 and 2013. – AFP

Senegal will be South Africa's opponents in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge on September 8, the national football association announced Monday.

The friendly match is scheduled for Orlando Stadium, a Soweto ground where 1995 African club champions Orlando Pirates play and the apartheid-era home of South African football.

First staged in 1994, the year South Africa held its initial democratic elections, the Challenge commemorates the first black president of the republic and global political icon Mandela, who died in 2013 aged 95.

South Africa and Senegal meet three days after playing away in the second round of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Bafana Bafana (The Boys) face Mauritania in Nouakchott on Saturday a few hours after the Teranga Lions meet Namibia in Windhoek.

Senegal are ranked fifth in Africa and 39th in the world and South Africa 17th in Africa and 72nd in the world.

Among the Senegalese stars who could be on show in Soweto is Sadio Mane, a pacy goal-scoring winger from English Premier League club Southampton and a reported target for Manchester United. – AFP

Disjointed United left exposed

As expected the threat to Manchester City's Premier League hegemony emerged in Swansea, and it wasn't Manchester United.

|||

As expected the threat to Manchester City's Premier League hegemony emerged in Swansea, and it wasn't Manchester United. An indifferent if unbeaten start to the season fed into a ramshackle display leaving Louis van Gaal seemingly no further forward than he was a year ago.

Indeed he may be further adrift - short in goal, short up front, and his talisman captain in no sort of form. A half-functioning Wayne Rooney of old would have buried the chance that fell to him with two minutes to go. The 2015 vintage allowed Ashley Williams to recover when clean through on goal.

It was not the first opportunity he squandered as the warm glow of that Bruges hat-trick dissipated in the frenzy of a Premier League afternoon. Swansea did not have to do that much to prosper. They were organised, had a plan and adapted quickly after falling behind.

Even when Van Gaal resorted to the nuclear option with 15 minutes to go, throwing Marouane Fellaini into the piece at the point of attack, Swansea did not miss a beat. It would be a disservice to Swansea and their enterprising young manager Garry Monk to focus on United's failings. Swansea had a purpose to their work that United did not. Yes they chased a lot of leather in the first half but they never lost sight of the demand or faith in each other.

United took the lead shortly after the break through Juan Mata, who hitherto had struggled to influence the game and later made way for the cavalry. This was his 50th goal in the Premier League, his 17th for United and should have been the catalyst to a performance of substance. It was, but not by United.

It was symptomatic of his display that Rooney should start the Swansea ball rolling, surrendering possession with a casual pass in the attacking third. The excellent Williams swept the ball wide to Gylfi Sigurdsson advancing into space down the right.

United were left flat-footed with Chris Smalling, one of the few positive contributors to United's season - along with Luke Shaw - caught out of position by Rooney's mistake. Sigurdsson crossed early, finding the head of the excellent André Ayew, who had no trouble guiding the ball past Sergio Romero.

Five minutes later Swansea were ahead. This time Ayew was the architect, picking out Bafétimbi Gomis with a smart diagonal ball that, as good as it was, still needed help from United to make it profitable. First Daley Blind failed to make a tackle, allowing Gomis a free swing. Even then there was no pace on the ball but that did not stop Romero diving over it.

The grand game of cat and mouse that Van Gaal has conducted with his first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea and suitors Real Madrid finally bore poisonous fruit. Romero was not even first-choice at Sampdoria, had barely kicked a ball since January, and here it showed.

There must be some concern, too, at the rate at which the heat is draining from Memphis Depay's boots. The Dutchman has a few nice touches and plenty of pace, but Van Gaal is nowhere near unlocking it in this system. Perhaps the two goals he fired against Bruges raised expectation beyond his capacity to deliver. Either that or he is a victim of Van Gaal's muddled thinking.

The selection of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who does not appear fully fit, at Michael Carrick's expense has not improved the team. And so United follow Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool into the false prophet's corner while Manchester City go marching on.

United had no problem dominating possession, and forced a couple of early saves from Lukasz Fabianski. Again the focus fell on Rooney, who was released in the 18th minute with a clear path to goal only to find the boot of Williams decisive, as it proved for most of the afternoon.

Two minutes later a nicely worked move involving Rooney, Ander Herrera and Memphis released Mata, who pulled his shot narrowly wide. None of this was discomfiting Swansea, who kept their shape, and for the most part the play in front of them.

The home side's first flourish came from a crunching tackle from Jonjo Shelvey on Schweinsteiger, with the ball falling to Ayew, who curled a beautiful pass into the path of Gomis with the outside of his right boot. Gomis was in the sweet shop now, and like a child he went for everything and ended up with nothing, his shot blasted wide.

Sigurdsson was inches wide seconds later, and then a poor clearance from Romero gave Shelvey a shooting chance that he wasted. Gomis did far better with a second attempt, turning Memphis, wriggling past Blind and firing narrowly wide.

Rooney wasted another opportunity shortly before the break, tamely attempting to lob Fabianski after Herrera split the Swansea defence with a neat pass through the middle. When United did break through three minutes after the break it came via Shaw's pace down the left. His cross was missed by Rooney, allowing the ball to reach the back post, where Mata arrived to squeeze the ball home.

The introduction of Ki Sung-yueng for Wayne Routledge in 58th minute proved masterful, changing Swansea's shape and the rhythm of the match. Within three minutes they were level. Rooney gave the ball away, Williams picked out Sigurdsson and Ayew did the rest.

Swansea go into the international break unbeaten, a point behind the equally enterprising Crystal Palace and four behind the leaders. Van Gaal must wait to see how the transfer window plays out before preparing for the visit of Liverpool. He continues to talk a good game, but there is as much diversion as truth in his commentary.

He can deny the validity of his accusers' questions all he likes but the evidence on the pitch does not lie. United are five points behind City after just four games and, on this display at least, that is a position that flatters them. – The Independent

Komphela lauds Chiefs for adapting

Coach Steve Komphela says Kaizer Chiefs played more with their heads than with their feet in booking themselves a place in the MTN8 final.

|||

The gospel according to Steve Komphela, is that Kaizer Chiefs played more with their heads than with their feet in booking themselves a place in the MTN8 final at the weekend.

Amakhosi beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in Saturday’s semi-final, second leg clash at the FNB Sta-dium.

“Credit must go to the players for the way they managed the game,” Komphela said in the post match conference of a tie Chiefs won 2-1 on aggregate.

“It was one of those games where you could not say we had total dominance. But we played more with our heads than with our feet and we’re happy to have made the final.”

Congratulating Celtic for having “left everything on the field”, Komphela said their opposition made it a hard encounter for the defending champions.

“One thing they threw at us was the different approach tactically. We had to read and adjust quickly, which we did even though there were instances where we didn’t take advantage of the time we had.”

Winning via a well-taken first half goal by George Lebese, who persisted with an attack that twice looked to be thwarted, Chiefs were actually fortunate not to have conceded early in the match.

Celtic, pressing from the outset in search of the away goal that would have cancelled out the one Chiefs scored in Bloemfontein a fortnight ago, managed to find their way past the hosts’ defence.

And on 19 minutes, Musa Nyatama threaded a fantastic through ball for Keenan Buchanan to leave the midfielder one-on-one with Itumeleng Khune.

But with the goalkeeper leaving his line and making himself big, Buchanan got put off his stride and he rushed his shot and succeeded in only sending the ball wide.

That proved to be the match’s turning point, although Komphela believes Chiefs would have been stung into action had Buchanan converted the chance.

“Celtic could have scored and triggered something from us.

“I know this team can respond, so you choose whether you force us to react or you stay how you are and we stay how we are.”

Celtic coach Clinton Larsen admitted that their failure to score was their undoing. “In the first half we got behind the Chiefs but it was the final touch that let us down. I thought in the 19th minute there was a key moment in the match with Buchanan’s chance.

“Had we taken that, it could have changed the complexion of the game but we didn’t.

“We gave a good account of ourselves.

“I’ve said it before, we are a team that’s still in progress and that we are improving with each game that we play and hopefully it’s games like this that will help us improve into a better team.” - The Star

Bilic defends Liverpool’s Lovren

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has received alot of flak following the 3-0 defeat against West Ham at Anfield.

|||

It was fortunate for Dejan Lovren, in the wake of a stunning 3-0 home defeat, that West Ham manager Slaven Bilic was on hand to give the case for the defence because, on the evidence of the previous 90 minutes, defending was the last thing on the Liverpool centre-half's mind.

Only 24 hours before this calamity, Lovren's manager Brendan Rodgers had talked him up, claiming the Croat was about to shake off the malaise of a difficult debut season at Anfield and finally demonstrate why he was signed for £20million from Southampton last summer.

The manager's optimism proved wildly misplaced as West Ham ended a 52-year wait for a victory at Anfield, a sequence that stretched back to the September day in 1963 when Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters were on the mark in a 2-1 win.

The current Hammers line-up may not boast that pedigree but, with Lovren and his defensive partner Martin Skrtel in this form, they scarcely needed such quality. Skrtel's poor defensive header gifted the opening goal to impressive debutant Manuel Lanzini before Lovren allowed the Argentine to skip past him, as he attempted to shepherd the ball out of play, and cross for Mark Noble to double the lead.

“He made a mistake. He was over-confident and that can happen,” said Bilic of his countryman Lovren. “I spoke to him about that in Istanbul when Besiktas beat Liverpool in the Europa League last season. I put him in the Croatia team when he was very young. I know him best.

“When he's concentrated and thinking only about his own game, not about the left-back or whoever is alongside him, there are very few centre-halves who are better than him. One mistake anyone can do but if you are telling me that Liverpool lost because of Dejan Lovren then no, no, no, no, no. It wasn't down to him.

“I'm not objective about him because I like him. It was a mistake but a lot of Liverpool players made mistakes. He can be a strong person but if you get kicked in the head every day then it's hard to stay strong. He was great against Arsenal. It is all down to confidence.”

Liverpool's cause was not helped by the dismissal of Philippe Coutinho, for a second bookable offence, which was followed by Noble also getting harshly sent off, before Diafra Sakho completed the rout in injury-time thanks to more unconvincing defending from Lovren and Skrtel.

But Rodgers, who witnessed the unfamiliar scene of Anfield emptying well before the final whistle, has more to be concerned about than just his defence. With Raheem Sterling leaving this summer and Luis Suarez sold 12 months earlier, Liverpool once more face the challenge of re-inventing their forward line.

“It's going to be a really difficult league to get your home wins in,” said Rodgers, citing the scarcity of home wins in the Premier League, prior to yesterday at least. “There will be lots of games like that and we have to find the way to win them. For us, we hope to be better in our own performance level. We want to be better and we have to be better.” – The Independent

Mourinho’s threat to stars

Jose Mourinho has promised to not think twice about wielding the axe after seeing Chelsea lose for a second time in four games.

|||

Jose Mourinho holds Eden Hazard among those responsible for Chelsea’s stuttering start and promised to not think twice about wielding the axe following their shock home defeat.

Hazard, who made the clean sweep of the Player of the Year awards last season, was accused of underperforming after Palace became only the second team to beat Mourinho’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Barclays Premier League.

Mourinho, who last month described Hazard as better than Cristiano Ronaldo, criticised the 24-year-old winger, saying: ‘If you are the best in the league, I think it should be a good responsibility to have a similar season than in the previous season.

‘I don’t want to analyse individual performances. In general terms, it is difficult to have a consistent performance when some of the players are not performing at a good level. When you have six or seven performing and three or four who are not at an acceptable level, it is hard for a team to be consistent in the performance.’

The four below-par players are understood to be Branislav Ivanovic, Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and Hazard.

Mourinho added: ‘You have players who have fantastic seasons and fantastic moments and the next season do not have the same. If you ask me, “Will I accept this and wait calmly for the performance level to be back?” No.

‘I have to work, react, analyse and if I feel the players are not in conditions to react and give more, I have to make changes. I have never had a problem with that.’

Joel Ward’s winner condemned Mourinho to defeat in his 100th league match at home, meaning Chelsea have begun their title defence with four points from four games, leaving them eight behind leaders Manchester City.

It makes it an uncomfortable international break for Mourinho with his side in the bottom half of the table. The next match is on September 12 against Everton, whose resilience over John Stones has seen Chelsea turn their focus elsewhere.

It is no secret their defence requires attention. Chelsea have conceded nine in their opening four games — their worst record since 1971 — and were repeatedly exposed by Palace.

Palace boss Alan Pardew revealed how his masterplan to target Chelsea right back Ivanovic had enabled him to become the first manager to earn a hat-trick of wins over Mourinho.

Pardew told Bakary Sako, Wilfried Zaha and then substitute Yannick Bolasie to attack down the left wing. He said: ‘We doubled up on Ivanovic in the first half with Sako and Wilf. It worked for us for a little bit. Then Yala Bolasie came on and did the same.’

Mourinho hinted that he feels Chelsea do not offer him the same ‘economic potential’ as City, who spent £52million on Kevin de Bruyne yesterday after earlier laying out £49m on Raheem Sterling and £32m on Nicolas Otamendi.

‘City reacted to the fact they had lost the title by buying fantastic players,’ Mourinho said. ‘They are buying more until the end of the market.This is their job and if they have the economic potential to do that, good.

‘You see my players on the pitch and could identify two or three players that can do better. That is what we have to do.It is not the point to be loyal. It is to analyse if they are ready to give an answer and fight against that bad form.’

Mourinho also indicated a handful of Chelsea’s squad are resting on their laurels. Asked how he can stave off a lack of appetite, he said: ‘If that is the case, it is very sad. When I win, I want to win again.If you win it once and the next you are not on fire, that is sad. My medal is at home. In a drawer.’ – Daily Mail

Shelvey earns England recall

Jonjo Shelvey’s fine early season form has earned him a recall to Roy Hodgson’s squad for the qualifying games against San Marino and Switzerland.

|||

Jonjo Shelvey can play his way into England’s Euro 2016 plans after earning a recall to Roy Hodgson’s squad for the qualifying games against San Marino and Switzerland.

The Swansea midfielder, who played in the club’s stunning 2-1 victory over Manchester United yesterday, won his last cap against San Marino in 2012.

Shelvey is in Hodgson’s 22-man squad because the increasingly influential figure of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been ruled out through injury.

Hodgson said: ‘On this occasion we are obviously missing some players from the June matches.However, this is compensated by the fact we have players who weren’t available over the summer.‘Jonjo Shelvey gets another chance as he has been very impressive since the start of the season, while Ryan Mason has been unlucky with us — he picked up an injury the last time he was in the England squad.

‘This latest squad shows we are working with a good number of players with a claim to be England regulars and secure a place in Euro 2016.‘Before that there are two matches we must focus on. The players must keep going, play well and look to win every match. I don’t want any let-up and we want to win both these games.’

John Stones, who handed in a transfer request at Everton last week, has been named in the squad because of his good form at Goodison Park. Manchester United defender Phil Jones is still injured, but Stones has done enough to move ahead of him in the pecking order at international level.

Left back Luke Shaw, who pulled out of the Under 21 tournament after a disappointing debut season at Old Trafford, has earned a recall to the senior team. Club-mate Michael Carrick also returns.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, who made his debut against the Republic of Ireland in the June friendly, is on a last warning following FA disciplinary action.

Vardy, who scored a penalty against Bournemouth on Saturday, has admitted and subsequently apologised for racially abusing a Japanese national.The FA have warned Vardy, who has served time in prison for assault, about his behaviour and he can consider himself fortunate to have been retained in the squad.

England have won all six qualifying games, but Hodgson knows the preparations for Saturday’s match with San Marino will be built around captain Wayne Rooney.

The England forward has scored 48 times for his country and he is expecting at least to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 against the European minnows.

After the San Marino trip England return to Wembley to play Switzerland a week tomorrow and it is likely to be an emotional night for the Manchester United striker.FA chiefs plan to invite Charlton and Gary Lineker to the stadium to make an on-pitch presentation to Rooney if he moves to the top of the goalscorers list in San Marino.

Rooney has a close relationship with Charlton, who also serves as a director at Old Trafford, and specifically requested the former England forward to make the presentation for his 100th cap.

ENGLAND SQUAD (v San Marino and Switzerland) — Goalkeepers: Hart (Man City), Butland (Stoke), Heaton (Burnley). Defenders: Clyne (Liverpool), Shaw (Man Utd), Gibbs (Arsenal), Cahill (Chelsea), Smalling (Man Utd), Stones, Jagielka (both Everton). Midfielders: Carrick (Man Utd), Milner (Liverpool), Barkley (Everton), Shelvey (Swansea), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Sterling, Delph (both Man City), Mason (Tottenham). Monk lauds Swansea after United triumph

Swansea City maintained their unbeaten start with am impressive come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Manchester United.

|||

London - Swansea City are becoming a force in the Premier League after maintaining their unbeaten start with am impressive come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Manchester United, manager Garry Monk said.

Sunday's win was Swansea's third in a row against United and extended an excellent start to the season which began with an opening-day draw at champions Chelsea.

“We're a good team,” Monk told Sky Sports. “We're a force in this league and when we're on it and playing our best football we can be unbelievable.

“When we weren't playing our best we can do the other side and that's the key to being a good team.”

The Welsh club were promoted to the Premier League in 2011 and consolidated their top-flight status under first Brendan Rodgers then Michael Laudrup.

They won the 2013 League Cup, their first major silverware, but Laudrup was dismissed and replaced by inexperienced Monk in 2014 - his first managerial role.

Monk, however, defied the odds by finishing eighth last season with a club record 56 points and Swansea have started this campaign in eye-catching form.

“It's just the way that we work and the stuff I try put in place with he players on the field and off the field we work a lot on our mentality and the way we approach games,” said Monk, who has continued the club's recent tradition of possession-based, neat-passing football.

“Today you saw character and the technical side of it. You've seen in the games already this season we've performed unbelievably well and in different ways and shown every side of us. That's what a good club should be doing.”

Fundamental to the victory over United was their ability to adapt.

Monk started the game playing 4-2-3-1 with limited success but reverted to a diamond formation and turned the game round with two quick goals through Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis.

“We thought they were overloading us a bit in the middle so we went to the diamond for 10 minutes in that second half,” Monk added.

“I think that helped us get two quickfire goals and at the end we just made a couple of little changes and saw the game out really well.”

Monk's counterpart Louis van Gaal said his side's inability to adapt to Swansea's formation change lost them the game.

“They had a shape which they started with and that was 4-2-3-1 and after 1-0 they changed the shape. We couldn't cope with that and that's not good,” the Dutchman said.– Reuters

Dante in 3-year Wolfsburg deal

Bayern’s Dante is joining Wolfsburg on a 3-year contract, the German champions said on Sunday.

|||

Berlin – Bayern Munich central defender Dante is joining Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg on a 3-year contract after losing his starting spot, the German champions said on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Brazil international had asked for a transfer after struggling to get any playing time at Bayern this season despite the absence of several other central defenders through injury or suspension.

He was a member of the Brazil team that lost 7-1 to Germany in the World Cup semi-final in in 2014 and struggled for form in the 2014-15 Bundesliga season, spending much of the time on the bench.

“Dante just wanted to have the chance to play regularly. We did not want to deny him this wish,” Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

The player, who joined Bayern in 2012 from Borussia Moenchengladbach and was a key part of their treble-winning season in 2013, will need to pass a medical at Wolfsburg before signing his contract, the Bavarians said.

“Bayern experienced a very successful time with him and we want to thank him for that,” Rummenigge said.

Wolfsburg, runners-up and German Cup winners last season, are competing in the Champions League group stage.

Hunt warns of Urban Warriors raid

Gavin Hunt concedes his Wits side will have to be vigilant when they face Ajax on Sunday.

|||

Johannesburg – Gavin Hunt concedes his Bidvest Wits side will have to be extra vigilant at the back if they are to come out on top in today’s MTN8 second leg semi-final clash against Ajax Cape Town at Bidvest Stadium (3pm).

The Wits coach said he hadpaid special attention to his opponents during their first-leg 1-1 draw a fortnight ago.

After that performance, Ajax went on to win two of their Absa Premiership fixtures, beating Maritzburg United (3-1) and Free State Stars (2-1), building up to today’s clash.

Wits, on the other hand, bounced back from a humiliating 4-2 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns, following their draw with Ajax, to beat the Team of Choice 2-0 on home turf.

But Hunt goes into this match with the knowledge that Ajax are a side that can be beaten.

They’ve done it before in their opening match of this season.

The Urban Warriors were subjected to a 2-1 defeat a few weeks ago at the very same venue.

Hence the 51-year-old coach believes his side can produce a result and book their place in the finals.

“We are looking forward to it,” Hunt said.

“They are a tough side to crack and they made it difficult for us in our previous game, but we are ready.

“Hopefully we’ll break them down this time around.

“We’ve been watching them very closely and they’ve shown great improvement in their previous two games.

“So it is crucial not to underestimate them.

“Sure, we’ve beaten them before but history won’t have any influence on today’s match.

“(Ajax coach) Roger de Sa has done an extremely good job with his boys and they’ll be raring to go.

“We just need to be tactically disciplined and we’ll be just fine,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hunt is over the moon about the fact that five of his players have been called up to the Bafana Bafana squad, saying Wits must be doing something right as a professional club playing in the elite league.

The Braamfontein outfit have the biggest representation of players in the current Bafana squad who will be travelling to Mauritania for their second match in Group M of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The five Wits players called to Shakes Mashaba’s national squad are: Sibusiso Vilakazi, Jabulani Shongwe, Siyabonga Nhlapo, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Phumlani Ntshangase.

“I’m proud of the boys,” Hunt said.

“They’ve done extremely well and they deserve to be called up to the national set-up.

“It goes to show that we are doing something right as a club and that’s a good thing.

“We wish them all the best.”

Komphela’s patience pays off

Steve Komphela led the Chiefs to the MTN8 final on Saturday, his first since 2004.

|||

Eleven years is a long time to wait for a cup final appearance, but Steve Komphela is the patient type.

And while many a coach would have been frustrated, Komphela was content to bide his time as he guided some of the country’s unfancied sides to decent performances and finishes.

Having long served his apprenticeship, he eventually earned South Africa’s plum coaching job this season, although scepticism abounded – naturally.

Last night, he moved a step closer to silencing those who had felt he was not fit enough to lead the country’s most popular side when he led them to the MTN8 final, his first since 2004.

Back then, Komphela guided lowly Manning Rangers to the Absa Cup final, where his team fell to Gavin Hunt’s Moroka Swallows.

There is a possibility of the two coaches meeting again should Hunt lead Bidvest Wits to victory over Ajax Cape Town in today’s evenly-poised other semi-final.

And how the former South African senior national team skipper would love to get even.

At the rate Chiefs are going, few would bet against Komphela lifting his maiden trophy as a coach.

Granted, he took over a settled team that had just had a highly successful season in winning both the league championship and the self-same MTN8. So his job was not going to be that much difficult.

But very quickly Chiefs are clearly a Komphela team, that Stuart Baxter stamp of a fast paced-game that was big on solid defending and reliant on catching the opposition on the break now gone.

Like he said when he took over, Amakhosi are historically renowned for their attractive brand of play that allows the players to confidently knock the ball about while giving the opposition little space to breathe.

This victory last night was grounded on such a game, with Komphela spending the entire match pacing up and down the technical area like a lioness on the prowl for its prey.

And his team responded the best way they know how, by punishing the opposition at the first opportunity.

When George Lebese scored what turned out to be the match’s only goal three minutes from the break, it had actually been Celtic who had appeared likely to score.

The visitors, who needed to score following the 1-1 first leg draw that meant Chiefs had the advantage of the away goal, took the initiative and attacked from the onset.

And they threatened the Chiefs goal as early as the fifth minute when Thapelo Morena found himself through on goal. But Itumeleng Khune did well to get off his line and his slide tackle stopped the Celtic man in his tracks.

Then Helder Pelembe attempted a shot from long range but could not replicate that stunner he scored in the first leg as his drive went way wide on nine minutes.

Celtic then wasted a glorious chance on 19 minutes, Keegan Buchanan shooting wide in a on-on-one situation with Khune following a fantastic through ball from Musa Nyatama.

The miss was to prove costly, especially with Chiefs, always looking sleek in their build-ups. They had got a corner on 12 minutes from Bernard Parker delivered a curler that evaded the defence and looked headed for goal only for Patrick Tignyemb to smother the ball.

Five minutes later it was Siphelele Mthembu who asked questions of the Celtic defence. The Chiefs striker doing well to evade his markers before delivering a cross that appeared to be blocked by a hand, only for referee Daniel Bennett to wave play on. He had another chance just before halftime to put Chiefs 2-0 up but his blast from the edge of the box brought the best out of Tignyemb who parried the ball out for a corner.

And then Buchanan failed dismally when scoring appeared so much easier.

Lebese then persisted in attack just before the break, sharing it with Mthembu before shooting in from inside the box to beat Tignyemb.

Celtic’s Cameroonian goalkeeper actually helped make the scoreline respectable with some brilliant stops in the second half as Chiefs took the ascendancy – no doubt following yet anther masterful Komphela team talk as has been the case since he took over.

He will have to deliver another one of those on September 19 if he is to capture his maiden trophy as a coach in his second attempt.

Any Real need for De Gea?

Many will be left wondering if Real need David De Gea after Keylor Navas’s Saturday performance.

|||

Madrid – Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas produced another excellent performance for Real Madrid in Saturday’s 5-0 La Liga win at home to Real Betis that may have left many fans of the world’s richest club wondering why they need David De Gea.

According to reports in Spanish and British media, Real are poised to pay Manchester United 40 million euros ($44.71m) to buy Spain keeper De Gea, who has not played this season because of the transfer saga, before the latest transfer window closes on Monday.

If the deal is confirmed, it will put Navas, who joined Real from Levante for a fee of 10 million euros after a sparkling performance at last year’s World Cup finals, in a difficult position.

Known as the “Falcon of Costa Rica” for his agility, the 28-year-old was one of the star players in Brazil and his brilliant form helped the central American nation unexpectedly reach the last eight.

Against Betis, he demonstrated that agility when he leaped to snatch the ball from the feet of forward Ruben Castro when he seemed certain to score and later saved a penalty from the same player with another fine stop.

Real’s new coach Rafa Benitez has repeatedly declined to confirm or deny whether De Gea will be joining the club, where he is seen as a long-term replacement for former captain Iker Casillas, who left to join Porto last month.

Asked on Saturday whether Navas, who competes for a place with new signing Kiko Casilla, would definitely be staying, he told reporters: “What answer have I given the last three weeks to questions about the goalkeepers?”

“I am delighted with the three keepers and I want to enjoy the 5-0,” added the 55-year-old, who took over from the sacked Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season. “I work with the players I have. I am very pleased.”

Navas earned effusive praise from Emilio Butragueno, a former Real striker who is now a club director.

“He was spectacular, he reacted like a cat,” Butragueno told Spanish television.

“Ruben Castro totally had the advantage and it gives some idea of what kind of keeper he is,” he added.

“Delighted and the fans were too. He participated a lot in the game, he influenced the result with his brilliance and you have to emphasise that.

“We don’t talk about players from other clubs, we are delighted with the squad.”

Arsenal scrape past ten-man Newcastle

Fabricio Coloccini's own goal gifted Arsenal a scrappy 1-0 win over ten-man Newcastle.

|||

Arsenal clinched their second Premier League win of the season as Fabricio Coloccini's own goal gifted the Gunners a scrappy 1-0 success at 10-man Newcastle on Saturday.

After Monday's goalless draw with Liverpool left them with one victory from their opening three matches, Arsene Wenger's spluttering side were already in danger of being cast adrift in the title race.

Although they were below their best again, Arsenal got back on track at St James' Park with the help of hot-headed Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic's latest indiscretion.

Referee Andre Marriner had infuriated Wenger when Arsenal were denied an early penalty after right-back Hector Bellerin appeared to have his heel trodden on by Florian Thauvin as he burst into the Newcastle area.

But Marriner was back in Wenger's good books in the 16th minute when he sent off Mitrovic after the Serbia international needlessly stamped on Francis Coquelin's ankle as he stretched in a failed attempt to reach a loose ball.

The combative Mitrovic's red card came after he had already been booked twice in his first three games since his pre-season move from Anderlecht.

Wenger's team eventually took advantage of their numerical superiority in the 52nd minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's low drive beat goalkeeper Tim Krul via a deflection off Coloccini as the Newcastle defender tried to block.

Newcastle are without a win in their first four league matches under new boss Steve McClaren.

The Gunners' away win also continued an unusual trend that has seen only six home wins from 31 Premier League matches so far this season.

Later on Saturday, leaders Manchester City will aim to extend their 100 percent start with a fourth successive win when they host unbeaten Watford.

After securing their maiden victory of the season at West Bromwich Albion last weekend, champions Chelsea take on fifth-placed Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool, in third place, face West Ham at Anfield, while Leicester, surprisingly in second place, travel to Bournemouth.

Tottenham's new South Korean signing Son Heung-min may have to wait for his debut following his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday.

The 23-year-old's transfer is subject to international clearance and obtaining a work permit, leaving him with a race against time to feature against Everton at White Hart Lane.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa play Sunderland and Stoke clash with West Brom.

On Sunday, Manchester United go to Swansea and Southampton host Norwich. – AFP

De Bruyne jets off to City

Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne jetted off to England with his club Wolfsburg poised to agree a German record transfer with Premier League giants Manchester City.

|||

Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne jetted off to England on Saturday morning with his club Wolfsburg poised to agree a German record transfer with Premier League giants Manchester City.

De Bruyne sat out Friday's 3-0 win over Schalke which put Wolfsburg top of the league with club bosses about to agree a reported fee of around £54m before Germany's transfer window closes at 1800 (1600 GMT) on Monday.

German broadcaster Sport1 showed De Bruyne boarding a private jet at Braunschweig airport, near Wolfsburg, en route to Manchester shortly before 10am local time (0800).

On Friday night, Wolfsburg director of sport Klaus Allofs said there were “only small details” left to finalise in the transfer.

The deal will smash the Bundesliga transfer record of 41 million euros that Liverpool paid Hoffenheim for Brazil striker Roberto Firmino in July.

Reports suggest Wolfsburg could pocket up to 80 million euros, with an extra six million in bonuses, for De Bruyne if the attacking midfielder helps City win this season's Premier League title.

Germany's footballer of the year for 2014/15 helped Wolfsburg win the German Cup last season and finish second to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, as he scored 16 goals and provided 29 assists in all competitions.

The 24-year-old cost Wolfsburg 25 million euros when he joined from Chelsea in January 2014 after a year on loan at fellow German side Werder Bremen in 2012/13.– AFP

Khune ready for long-range rockets

Twice this season, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been beaten by long-range strikes from outside the penalty area.

|||

Twice this season, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been beaten by long-range strikes from outside the penalty area – something unusual for a shot-stopper of his calibre.

It all started with a thunderous shot from Bloemfontein Celtic striker Helder Pelembe in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final, with the teams playing to a 1-1 stalemate after Bernard Parker redeemed himself with the equaliser, having missed a penalty earlier.

Then followed a beautifully taken shot by Puleng Tlolane, who equalised for Polokwane City to salvage a point against Chiefs during their midweek 1-all Absa Premiership clash.

Heading to the second leg of the competition at the FNB Stadium today, Pelembe must be itching to launch another blistering shot to beat Khune.

However, the Chiefs shot-stopper has been working tirelessly at training to avoid being beaten by such goals again.

“Players are gaining confidence shooting from outside the box, but I have been working very hard at training with the rest of the team and it should be something we will fix going forward,” said Khune.

“But it is a collective effort; it is not only the goalkeeper who needs to deal with those shots.

“Even the players need to press the guy on the ball early and restrict him from getting a clear view of goals.’’

Khune reckons they will have to be rock-solid at the back and make sure they don’t allow Celtic to catch them on the counter.

“I’m saying the obvious, but it is very important to keep a clean sheet.

“We were 1-0 down in Bloemfontein, but we showed great character by coming back into the match and getting that important away goal.

“We are hosting Celtic, and we know just how good they are.

“The teams we play against sit back, wait for us to counter, then turn our counter into their counter-attack.

“So it is vital we remain disciplined and focused throughout. And, of course, not concede a goal. Then we are through to the final,” said the former Chiefs skipper.

“We are aware that each game in the MTN8 is worth R2-million. At the moment we have R4-million in the bag, so we are R4-million away from completing the R8-million.

“But it is not going to be easy.

“They are coming to FNB and you know what happens when teams come to our home base.”

Amakhosi were gifted two goals last time they played at home in their 4-0 victory over Free State Stars in an Absa Premiership clash, when Stars centre-backs, Robert Sankara and Liberty Chokomora, scored in their own net, which saw the Soweto giants record their first victory in the league.

Khune conceded that this season’s performance has not started like a house on fire but the team are working on it.

“We are not happy with the way we’ve started this campaign,” he said.

“Last season we went all the way to the MTN8 final without conceding a goal.

“However, this season we started badly by our standards.

“We’ve conceded four goals already in the same tournament, so we can only improve.

“And it will start today against Celtic,” said the ’keeper. - Saturday Star

LVG wants more from United’s attack

Louis Van Gaal has warned Manchester United that they still have to prove themselves as an attacking force in the Premier League.

|||

Louis Van Gaal has warned Manchester United that they still have to prove themselves as an attacking force in the Barclays Premier League despite their four-goal cruise in Bruges.

The victory on Wednesday that booked United’s place in the Champions League group stage equalled their biggest win under Van Gaal, as Wayne Rooney returned to goalscoring form with a hat-trick.

It followed a return of just two goals in the opening three Premier League games and Van Gaal knows they are unlikely to have as many chances at Swansea tomorrow in his 50th match in charge.

‘We played very well against Bruges in ball possession, much better than matches before, but it was because they had to attack so they gave more space. Swansea have a good team so it be very difficult to beat them.’ Van Gaal will certainly expect United to be more ruthless after Javier Hernandez wasted Rooney’s generosity by slipping and missing a penalty in Belgium.

‘I am not surprised he gave it to him because Rooney is a very social guy,’ said Van Gaal. ‘He is a real captain. But we cannot do it at 0-0, then I’m very angry.

‘At 4-0, it was a great gesture.’

Van Gaal acknowledged that he has had issues to address at the other end of the pitch even though Sergio Romero has only conceded one goal in five games.

The impasse over David de Gea’s situation at Old Trafford — described as an ‘absolute joke’ by former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel yesterday — has seen Romero thrown in at the deep end. The Argentina keeper’s ball distribution has been a concern and he has yet to be fully exposed to the physical nature of English football because of the form of United’s defence. But Van Gaal revealed that Romero has undergone special training sessions to bring him up to speed. – Daily Mail

Wenger not panicking

Arsene Wenger refuses to panic about Arsenal's spluttering start to the Premier League season.

|||

Arsene Wenger refuses to panic about Arsenal's spluttering start even though the Gunners boss admits his side aren't firing on all cylinders.

Wenger's men head to Newcastle on Saturday looking to win for just the second time in their first four Premier League matches.

A goalless draw against Liverpool on Monday left the north Londoners already lagging five points behind leaders Manchester City after a worrying repeat of the slow opening that eventually doomed their title challenge last season.

Wenger acknowledged his players aren't at their best yet, but he cautioned against writing them off too soon.

“We have not had the ideal start and we are conscious of that but we want to play 60 games in the season,” Wenger said.

“We have played three games now and we have lost one that we should not have lost, but we have to be conscious that the season is not decided yet.

“Maybe we are not firing on all cylinders at the moment. Not everybody is ready physically. Certainly at the moment we want it so much at home that we're trying to force it a little bit.”

Meanwhile, City winger Jesus Navas has warned the Premier League pace-setters not to get complacent after their blistering start.

Manuel Pellegrini's side have reeled off three wins from their opening three matches and the swaggering manner of their performances suggests City are back to their best after tamely surrendering the title to Chelsea last season.

With Raheem Sterling bedding in nicely after his move from Liverpool and a big-money deal for Wolfsburg's Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne reportedly close to completion, City are assembling an awesome array of attacking talent that could leave the rest of the top tier trailing in their wake.

The leaders are firm favourites to maintain their flying start when they host promoted Watford on Saturday, but Spain international Navas is well aware of the dangers of underestimating a team who have drawn all three of their league matches so far.

“It is not only that we have won these three games, it is that we didn't concede any goals and we created a lot of chances. We are really happy,” Navas said.

“But we need to keep the same attitude, working really well defensively and also creating a lot of chances. That is the way to win more games this season.”

Like City, Liverpool, who host West Ham on Saturday, were disappointing last season as they followed a second place finish in 2013-14 by slipping down to sixth.

But, while City have recaptured the enterprising style that made them champions two years ago, Liverpool have focused on solidifying a defence that proved so porous over the last 12 months.

The early signs are promising for boss Brendan Rodgers as new full-backs Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez have helped third placed Liverpool keep three consecutive clean-sheets and take seven points from a possible nine.

“For two guys that have just arrived at the club, where the expectation level will be way above what they've experienced before, they already look as though they've been here a long, long time,” Liverpool assistant coach Gary McAllister said.

Buoyed by Wayne Rooney's return to form with a hat-trick in their midweek Champions League play-off round demolition of Club Brugge, fourth placed Manchester United can focus on the title race now their European progress is assured.

United, unbeaten in the league so far, will need Rooney at his best if they are to mount a sustained title challenge, so it was a major boost to see the England striker end his 878-minute scoring drought ahead of Sunday's trip to Swansea.

“I wasn't worried, if it was going on for three, four, five games more then maybe so but it's early days and I knew when the chances came I'd take them,” Rooney said.

With one win from their first three games, Chelsea find themselves in the unfamiliar position of languishing in mid-table, well below Saturday's opponents Crystal Palace, who visit Stamford Bridge in fifth place.

But spirits have soared at the Bridge following the impressive debut display of Pedro Rodriguez, who marked his arrival from Barcelona by scoring one and setting up another in Chelsea's maiden victory of the season at West Bromwich Albion.

LVG out to end Swansea jinx

Louis van Gaal lost his first competitive match as Manchester United manager against Swansea City on the first day of last season.

|||

London - Louis van Gaal lost his first competitive match as Manchester United manager against Swansea City on the first day of last season and is expecting another difficult game from the Welsh side on Sunday.

Swansea went on to complete the Premier League double over United and the Dutchman is determined to take revenge at the Liberty Stadium.

“My first match was against Swansea and we lost, now I have my 50th and I hope we can show we have improved,” Van Gaal told reporters on Friday.

“I don't want to lose again. It's the only club we could not beat or gain one point against, I hope we can improve and that we can show that we are better than last year.

“It will be difficult but we are better prepared than this time last year.”

Towering Belgian Marouane Fellaini is available to play his first Premier League game of the season after serving a suspension but Adnan Januzaj will miss out due to injury.

Van Gaal could be tempted to start Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera who made a lively contribution and scored a goal in the 4-0 Champions League qualifying win at Club Bruges on Wednesday.

“I had a theoretical scheme in my head that he could play at No. 10 and he did it well against Bruges,” Van Gaal said.

United have taken seven points from their first three league games of the season and lie joint third in the table despite only scoring two goals.

Captain Wayne Rooney, however, bagged a hat-trick in Bruges to open his account for the campaign.

“It will be a difficult game, it's another year and another prospect,” Swansea manager Garry Monk said. “United have added quality to their squad with world-class players.

“It's becoming more difficult to compete with these kind of squads. We're up against one of the title contenders, it will be difficult but we're looking forward to it.”

Milestones for Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reaches two more milestones at the club in their Premier League game at home to Crystal Palace.

|||

London - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reaches two more milestones at the club in Saturday's Premier League game at home to London rivals Crystal Palace.

It will be his 200th league match, of which he has lost only 20, and a 100th home league game with only one defeat - by lowly Sunderland in April.

“I'm proud of the record but I don't think it has any influence in the future,” Mourinho told a news conference on Friday.

“It's not normal, 99 matches in the most competitive league and a defeat could have happened in so many matches.”

In his first spell at the club, between 2004-07, Mourinho won two league titles, adding a third on his return last season.

Chelsea have made a stuttering start to the new campaign with a win, a draw and a 3-0 defeat by league leaders Manchester City, having conceded seven goals in three games and had two men sent off.

The manager believes, however, that falling five points behind is not a problem.

“It's not normal that in three matches you have three penalties against and play with 10 men twice,” he added.

“Four points is not what we want but is not a drama. We know we're going to improve.

“Manchester City are a very good team and have started well but last season Chelsea started well and arrived at Jan. 1 with the same points as others.”

On Palace's last visit, in May, Chelsea clinched the league title with a 1-0 win.

Mourinho said Alan Pardew's side were even stronger this season and will be “top 10 for sure”.

He must do without captain John Terry, who was sent off in the 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

As usual Mourinho refused to comment about transfer targets like John Stones of Everton and Chinese defender Zhang Linpeng of Guangzhou Evergrande.

“I have a good squad. If I get another player, good, but if I don't, I go with what we have,” he said. – Reuters

Spurs sign S Korean forward

Tottenham Hotspur have signed South Korea forward Son Heung-min from Germans Bayer Leverkusen.

|||

Tottenham Hotspur have signed South Korea forward Son Heung-min from Germans Bayer Leverkusen, the English Premier League club announced Friday.

Son has signed a five-year deal with the north London side for a reported transfer fee of £22 million ($34 million, 30 million euros), with the 23-year-old's move to White Hart Lane subject to a work permit and international clearance.

Son scored 29 goals in 87 appearances for Leverkusen after joining from domestic rivals Hamburg in 2013 for 10 million euros.

Leverkusen have already signed his replacement in Slovenia international Kevin Kampl from Borussia Dortmund.

Born in Chuncheon, the capital of Gangwon Province, Son - nicknamed 'Sonny' -- joined Hamburg's youth set-up at the age of 16 and first played for South Korea in 2010.

His move will give Tottenham an extra forward option, with rising star Harry Kane yet to score this season.

Should Son's transfer be confirmed, it may mean that Spurs' pursuit of Saido Berahino is at an end, with the club having already had two offers for the West Bromwich Albion striker rejected by their Premier League rivals.

Son has 11 goals in 44 international appearances and played at the 2014 World Cup.

“I'm looking forward to going there and performing for the Spurs fans as soon as possible,” Son told Tottenham's Twitter feed. “The support I get from the fans motivates me more and more.

“I'm a player who really loves football. I learned the game under my father who was a football coach in my school.

“I've trained with both feet so I can use them freely. Bold and daring -- this is how I like to try to play.”

Son leaves Leverkusen on the back of a public spat, though, after missing Wednesday's Champions League play-off victory over Lazio in order to complete his Spurs move.

Both Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt and Son's team-mate Haken Calhanoglu had criticised Son for the timing, saying the Korean had been “ill-advised”.

But the striker took exception to Calhanoglu's comments after the Turkish midfielder forced through his transfer from Hamburg to Leverkusen last year.

“People who lives in glasshouses shouldn't go throwing stones,” Son told German Kicker magazine.

“Everyone should mind his own business and there is certainly enough to take care of.” – AFP

Intruiging MTN8 semis

Kaizer Chiefs take on Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits host Ajax Cape Town in their respective MTN8 second leg semi-finals.

|||

Cape Town – It's crunch time this weekend as Kaizer Chiefs take on Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits host Ajax Cape Town in the MTN8 second leg semi-finals.

Both of the first legs ended in 1-1 stalemates, with Chiefs and Wits each getting the away goals.

A stunner of a long range drive by Helder Pelembe put Celtic 1-0 up after 33 minutes in the first leg, but a goal on the hour mark by Bernard Parker made amends for his earlier penalty miss and arguably put AmaKhosi in the driving seat for the return game.

A 0-0 draw would be enough to take AmaKhosi into the final, while a 1-1 scoreline would take the match into extra time and penalties. Celtic are still looking for their first victory over Chiefs in all competitions since 2009.

Victory for the Soweto side on Saturday night would keep them on track for a 16th top eight title, while Phunya Sele Sele have won the competition once before, in 2005.

In all competitions so far this season, Chiefs have 11 goals in five matches, conceding five, with two wins and three draws.

Celtic meanwhile go in to the match boosted their first league win of the season, 1-0 against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night. Clinton Larsen's men have won two of their five matches this season losing once and drawing twice, scoring six goals and conceding six.

Wits and Ajax will meet for the third time this season on Sunday, the Clever Boys having won 2-1 in Johannesburg in the league before drawing 1-1 in the MTN8 first leg semi-final game in Stellenbosch.

An 11th minute goal from Toriq Losper had given the Cape side the advantage, but the Students came storming back on a rainy evening to equalise through Henrico Botes' poacher's goal 15 minutes from time.

Ajax appear to be a side gaining in confidence, a 2-1 midweek win over Free State Stars, taking the Cape team to second on the league standings, thanks to three goals in two matches from Prince Nxumalo.

The Urban Warriors have won three and drawn one of their five outings this season, netting eight goals while Anssi Jaakkola has picked the ball out of his net five times.

The Clever Boys meanwhile secured a 2-0 midweek win over Maritzburg United to eradicate the memory of a 4-2 defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.

Their record this season in all competitions is three wins, one draw and one defeat, with 10 goals scored and seven conceded.

Ajax, back in the MTN8 for the first time in five seasons, have never won the competition, their best showing coming in 2009 when they made it to the final, only to lose 6-0 to Golden Arrows.

The Students have won the top eight competition twice, the last occasion being in 1995 when they beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-0. - African News Agency (ANA)

Tough CL draw for Manchester City

Manchester City drew a difficult Champions League group for the fifth season in a row. Juventus, Sevilla and Borussia Mönchengladbach will make Group D yet another “group of death”.

|||

Manchester City drew a difficult Champions League group for the fifth season in a row. Juventus, Sevilla and Borussia Mönchengladbach will make Group D yet another “group of death”, giving Manuel Pellegrini a difficult task as City try finally to make an impression on European competition.

In their four previous seasons in the Champions League, City have twice failed to qualify and twice finished second behind Bayern Munich, before being knocked out in the last 16 by Barcelona. While City have avoided those two European giants this season, they have arguably drawn the most competitive group in the whole stage, on a par with their opponents from 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Juventus, Italian champions for the fourth year in a row, and beaten finalists in this year's Champions League final, were City's opponents from the top pot. Even if they cannot keep one-time City target Paul Pogba, they will still be a force, having added Sami Khedira, Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala this summer. Sevilla, the Europa League winners for the past two years, and the first side to qualify for the Champions League through that route, could be just as difficult, having signed Fernando Llorente and Yevhen Konoplyanka this summer.

Finally, City face another trip to the Bundesliga - for the fifth year in a row - where they will face Mönchengladbach, whose key players are the Swiss duo Josip Drmic and Granit Xhaka.

Arsenal face the highest-profile opposition, welcoming 2013 champions Bayern Munich to the Emirates. It will be a familiar tale for Arsène Wenger's side, who have been eliminated twice in recent years by the Bavarian giants. In 2013, on their way to the treble, Jupp Heynckes' side beat the Gunners 3-1 at the Emirates before losing 2-0 at home, and so qualifying on away goals. The following year, with Pep Guardiola in charge, Bayern again won at the Emirates, 2-0, and qualified after a 1-1 draw at home.

Bayern remain one of the strongest teams in Europe, and have invested heavily this summer to upgrade their side, signing Arturo Vidal from Juventus and Douglas Costa from Shakhtar Donetsk. The rest of their group is slightly less intimidating, although Olympiakos will be tricky opponents, the featuring midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, who left Leicester City this summer. Croatian side Dynamo Zagreb complete the group.

Chelsea's group should not challenge them on the pitch, although the travelling may take a lot out of them. There will be another reunion between Jose Mourinho and Porto, at the club where he won the 2003 Uefa Cup and 2004 Champions League before joining Chelsea first time round. They will also face Maccabi Tel Aviv, the Israeli side whose sports director is former Manchester United and Barcelona midfielder Jordi Cruyff. They are managed by Slavisa Jokanovic, the Serbian coach who took Watford to promotion to the Premier League last season. Finally, Chelsea will face Dynamo Kiev, who just beat Shakhtar Donetsk to the Ukrainian title last season.

The easiest draw among the English teams belonged to Manchester United. They have another short trip to the Low Countries, to face PSV Eindhoven, the Dutch champions from whom they signed Memphis Depay for £25m earlier this summer.

United will also face Wolfsburg, another good side set to lose their star player if Kevin De Bruyne joins Manchester City for £52m. Wolfsburg do have the impressive Swiss full-back Ricardo Rodriguez and former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner in their side, but they should not present United with too much of a challenge. Finally, United have a long-haul trip to Russia to play CSKA Moscow, whose coach, Leonid Slutsky, combines the job with managing the Russian national team.

In other groups, reigning champions Barcelona have drawn Bayer Leverkusen, Roma and BATE Borisov. Benfica will face the longest journey of the season, flying across Europe to face Kazakh side FC Astana, in a group with 2014 runners-up Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray. The 2014 winners Real Madrid have drawn Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmo, meaning that PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will face the Swedish side where he began his career. In Group H, Valencia and Zenit St Petersburg are drawn with Lyons and Ghent.

Wenger hits back at pundits

Arsene Wenger has accused TV pundits of not doing enough research after Gary Neville’s stinging attack on the Arsenal manager.

|||

Arsene Wenger has accused TV pundits of not doing enough research after Gary Neville’s stinging attack on the Arsenal manager.

In his role as a Sky Sports pundit, the England coach branded Wenger ‘arrogant or naive’ during coverage of the Gunners’ goalless draw against Liverpool on Monday night.

Wenger hit back yesterday, claiming experts are not doing the preparation to justify their assertions.

‘You know in football you have to accept that anybody can be right,’ said Wenger. ‘The only thing I want is that when people have opinions, it is documented and worked out before, especially when it is football specialists.

‘I accept you can be right and I can be wrong. But what you do not want is just an opinion that comes out just because you feel like that. I watch sometimes, the guy doesn’t talk about the game — he tells you his life and what he thinks about football.

‘At the end, I don’t know the players who have played on the pitch because the guys don’t comment on the game.’

Wenger, who has worked as a pundit in his native France, added: ‘I am not against opinion, people can say they don’t think Arsenal are good enough.

‘What is a concern is that it puts pressure on players. People who have been in the game, I love that they go on television, but what I would like is for them to help people to love football even more. The first mission is to educate people.’

Arsenal could be without centre backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny at Newcastle tomorrow lunchtime. Mertesacker has a chest infection and Koscielny has a back injury. – Daily Mail

Chelsea stonewalled by Everton

Everton insist the John Stones saga is over after formally rejecting the England defender’s request to join Chelsea.

|||

Everton insist the John Stones saga is over after formally rejecting the England defender’s request to join Chelsea.

Chairman Bill Kenwright issued a succinct three-paragraph statement last night to re-affirm the stance Everton have taken all summer — that Stones is not for sale.

Stones submitted his request on Tuesday in the hope of forcing through a move to Stamford Bridge but Everton manager Roberto Martinez told him during a meeting at the club’s Finch Farm facility yesterday that the club would not grant his wish.

As far as Martinez is concerned, it will be a case of business as usual and Stones will be selected for the squad that travels down to London for tomorrow’s clash with Tottenham.

It is understood that Chelsea returned with what they regarded to be a fourth and final bid earlier this week — it was in the region of £38million — but with that being rejected, it became clear that Everton’s position would not alter.

The 21-year-old (left) had been Jose Mourinho’s prime target. He has regarded Stones as John Terry’s long-term successor and has ambitions to pair the England international alongside Kurt Zouma.

But Everton have refused to buckle under pressure — Chelsea’s interest in Stones goes back months and there have been bids of £20m, £26m and £30m — even though they were aware of Stones’ desire to join the champions.

Kenwright said: ‘Everton Football Club has rejected a transfer request from John Stones.

‘Since the start of the transfer window, we have resolutely turned down offers from another Premier League football club for our player. John is not for sale and he will remain a highly valued member of our first-team squad.’

With Mourinho anxious to bolster his defence, he may now turn to Zenit St Petersburg’s Ezequiel Garay, but his admiration for Stones will not disappear and there is little doubt Chelsea will continue to track him.

Stones was subjected to abuse from Everton fans after his side’s dramatic Capital One Cup victory over Barnsley on Wednesday night.

Stones was in the starting line-up for the 5-3 extra-time win but was heckled off the Oakwell pitch by some of the away support as he headed towards the tunnel.

Footage from the stands showed one fan shouting, ‘F*** off Stones, you f****** rat’ at the 21-year-old, who was returning to his former club for the first time since he left in 2013. – Daily Mail

Sturridge returns to training

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge could be closing in on a return to action after training alongside the first team.

|||

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge could be closing in on a return to action after training alongside the first team for the first time since undergoing hip surgery in the United States in May.

The 25-year-old scored five goals in just 18 appearances for the Merseyside club in an injury-hit campaign last season with his last appearance coming in a 1-0 FA Cup win at Blackburn Rovers on April 8.

Sturridge went under the knife in New York to fix an issue believed to be behind the various muscle problems he suffered last term but looked to be moving well when he was put through his paces at Melwood on Thursday.

Meanwhile, midfielder Lazar Markovic appears set to join Turkish side Fenerbachce on a season-long loan, according to British media reports, with the clubs said to have agreed terms for the 21-year-old.

The Serbia international joined Liverpool from Benfica for a reported 20 million pounds ($31 million) last season but made just 11 league starts as he struggled to cope with the physical nature of the Premier League.

He has not featured in the squad for any of Liverpool's three matches this season.

Markovic will become the fourth player to leave Anfield this summer should the deal go through, following the departures of Rickie Lambert, Javier Manquillo and Mario Balotelli.

Unlike Balotelli, however, Markovic could still feature in manager Brendan Rodgers' long-term plans as the loan agreement does not contain a clause to make the move a permanent one, the reports added. – Reuters

Champions League looks less predictable

The Champions League group stages took on a less predictable look after the draw, helped by Uefa's decision to tweak the seeding system.

|||

Moncao - The Champions League group stages took on a less predictable look after Thursday's draw, helped by Uefa's decision to tweak the seeding system.

Only Group A, where Paris St Germain and Real Madrid should steam through, and Group F, set to be dominated by Bayern Munich and Arsenal, appeared to be foregone conclusions after the hour-long ceremony in Monaco.

Other sections looked far more difficult to call, particularly Group D where anything could happen between Juventus, Manchester City, Sevilla and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

In past years Uefa have based their seeding system for the draw on club coefficients, a complex ranking based on results in European competition.

This time European soccer's governing body brought in a change, the top seeds were the champions of the eight most successful nations in club competition.

Real Madrid, who lead the club coefficients but were not La Liga winners last season, were one of the eight second seeds while Dutch league champions PSV Eindhoven, 37th in the coefficients, were one of the eight top seeds.

Whether by accident or design, the draw could pump a little more excitement into a competition that, recently in the group stages, has been short on romance and shock results.

Last season all but five places in the round of 16 were taken before the final round of matches in the group stages.

In addition, 11 teams have reached the round of 16 for the last two seasons in a row.

This time the thrills could start in Group B featuring Manchester United, VfL Wolfsburg, CSKA Moscow and PSV.

PSV will want to show Dutch club football is alive and kicking, Wolfsburg were Bundesliga runners-up last season and CSKA came through a dramatic playoff against Sporting Lisbon.

While United should go through, they will not want to depend on getting a result in their final match at Wolfsburg.

Atletico Madrid should progress from Group C, leaving Galatasaray and Benfica to scrap for second place with Kazakh outsiders Astana adding an exotic touch.

There are no clear favourites in Group D where Serie A champions and last season's runners-up Juventus could struggle after the departures of Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal.

City's poor European record has shown that Premier League status and riches do not guarantee Champions League success.

Europa League winners Sevilla are seasoned campaigners with a talented coach in Unai Emery and outsiders Moenchengladbach are capable of springing an upset.

Holders Barcelona should cruise through Group E but there is likely to be a fascinating battle for second place between Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma.

BATE Borisov of Belarus are unlikely to qualify but could throw a spanner in the works of Leverkusen and Roma, having beaten Bayern Munich and Athletic Bilbao in recent years.

Chelsea should dominate Group G although Porto are always dangerous opponents with a knack of replenishing the team after selling their top players.

Porto, however, are by no means certain to get the better of Dynamo Kiev having recently sold Alex Sandro, Danilo and Jackson Martinez.

Last season Kiev wrested the Ukrainian Premier League title from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Zenit St Petersburg, who as Russian league champions avoided the likes of Barcelona and Bayern, drew Valencia, Olympique Lyonnais and Ghent in Group H where two of the first three have a realistic chance of advancing. – Reuters

English Premier League preview

Last season’s top two, Chelsea and Manchester City, are keen to reverse the most striking statistic of the new Premier League season this weekend – and they are not the only ones.

|||

Steve Tongue

LONDON: Last season’s top two, Chelsea and Manchester City, are keen to reverse the most striking statistic of the new Premier League season this weekend – and they are not the only ones.

Of the 30 matches played in the opening three rounds, only six have resulted in home wins, with more than twice as many going the way of the visitors, while the other 11 have been drawn.

Even at such an early stage of the campaign, leaders City are one of just three teams with a 100 per cent home record – Swansea City and Liverpool being the others – though each have played just one home match so far.

Having beaten champions Chelsea 3-0 in their only game at the Etihad Stadium, City will be confident of seeing off Watford for their fourth successive win of the campaign, although Quique Flores’ promoted side are unbeaten in the league, having drawn all three matches.

Chelsea, undefeated at home in winning the title last season, suffered an opening-day setback at Stamford Bridge this time when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was sent off and Swansea City held them to a 2-2 draw.

Last weekend captain John Terry was dismissed at West Bromwich Albion, so he will miss the London derby with fifth-placed Crystal Palace.

Swansea won their only home game to date, against Newcastle, but now face a tougher task with a visit on Sunday from Manchester United, who must hope there is no hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League qualifying rout of Bruges.

Liverpool will be confident of beating West Ham, whose dreadful record at Anfield suggests their supporters should save the train fare – the Londoners have not won there since 1963, 42 games ago.

Arsenal’s form exemplifies the unusual trend of home and away results. They go to Newcastle in the early Saturday match after failing to score in two games at the Emirates but having won their only game on the road. – Reuters

Messi voted best player in Europe

Uefa has voted Barcelona’s Lionel Messi the best player in Europe for 2014-2015.

|||

Monaco - Lionel Messi was Thursday voted Uefa's best player in Europe for 2014-2015 with Germany's Celia Sasic winning the women's award.

The Argentina star, who won the Champions League, Spain's La Liga and Spanish Cup with Barcelona, claimed the award for the second time ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez.

“I am happy to win the award. I thank all my teammates because they deserve part of it. I depend a lot on the team like everyone else,” the 28-year-old said.

Messi also won in 2010-2011 and succeeds Real Madrid rival Ronaldo who won last year.

FFC Frankfurt's Sasic, 27, was voted the best women's player ahead of France's Amandine Henry and fellow German Dzsenifer Marozsan.

Sasic, who retired last month, was the top scorer in the Champions League which Frankfurt won, the Bundesliga and at the Women's World Cup in Canada where she won the Golden Boot award.

Defensive worry for Arsenal, Wenger

Arsene Wenger says central defensive pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny remain doubtful against Newcastle.

|||

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says first-choice central defensive pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny remain doubtful for the Gunners' trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

Illness and a back injury prevented the pair from playing in Monday's 0-0 draw against Liverpool, with Calum Chambers and Gabriel Paulista filling in for the absent duo.

Wenger will be hoping his regular starters can soon return after their replacements were unconvincing in the first half as goalkeeper Petr Cech made two stunning saves with Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho hitting the woodwork twice.

“Mertesacker is still ill and we will know more about Koscielny after he has a test,” Wenger said in his Thursday news conference.

“Koscielny will have a test today and we'll know more tomorrow,” he added.

In Monday's game, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey had an eighth-minute strike ruled out for offside and the 24-year-old called for the use of technology for marginal decisions after replays indicated the goal should have stood.

Wenger echoed the comments made by the Welshman and is confident technology will eventually be introduced to assist in that aspect of the game.

“I'm convinced it will come in. It's the next step (on offside decisions),” the 65-year-old Frenchman said.

“The sooner the better, you would have my signature on it tomorrow morning.”

The Gunners have collected just four points form their opening three Premier League games and Wenger put the club's slow start down to a lack of match fitness.

“Some players are not completely there yet. It's normal after two or three games that you're not at 100 percent,” he added.

“We've not had the ideal start. We've played three games, we want to play 60 and we've lost a game we shouldn't have.

“I said we wanted to start strong because we had two derbies and Liverpool at home.”

Arsenal have won seven in a row against Newcastle United and Wenger is confident his side can overcome what he expects to be a tough match to improve the streak to eight.

“It's important that we prepare well. It's always very tight and very committed there because the crowd is behind them,” Wenger said.

“We have always done very well,” he added. – Reuters

That match will played at Lafarge Orlando Stadium and will kick off at 19h00.

A month later South Africa will be up against Costa Rica in Central America for an international friendly. That clash is pencilled for Thursday, 8 October in the Costa Rican town of Liberia.

Bafana Bafana will remain in Central America and travel to San Pedro, Sula to face Honduras on Tuesday, 13 October. The kick-off times and venues for the two international friendly matches are still to be confirmed.

Balotelli blames Rodgers’ tactics

Maverick striker Mario Balotelli blamed his poor Liverpool stint on manager Brendan Rodgers' tactics.

|||

Maverick striker Mario Balotelli blamed his poor Liverpool stint on manager Brendan Rodgers' tactics after completing his season-long loan move to AC Milan on Thursday.

The controversial player failed to make an impact at Anfield last season, scoring only one goal in 16 Premier League appearances as the club finished sixth in the table.

The 25-year-old Italian, who joined Liverpool last season for a reported fee of 16 million pounds ($24.78 million) from Milan, was also criticised for his poor work rate during his time in England.

“I take my responsibilities, but the system chosen by Rodgers wasn't suited to my characteristics,” Balotelli said on Milan's official website.

The Italy international said he cannot afford to waste anymore chances.

“I feel like someone who has put the first part of his career to one side. Played and lived like a boy,” Balotelli said.

“I haven't forgotten how to play football. I am no longer a kid. I've wasted too many chances,” he added.

Balotelli, who also played for Manchester City, had a relatively successful and uneventful spell in Milan, scoring 18 goals in 41 Serie A appearances in one-and-a-half seasons.

According to a media report, he will have a good behaviour clause inserted into his contract with Milan, banning extravagant haircuts and clothing and committing him to a healthy lifestyle. – Reuters

Is this Balotelli’s last chance?

Liverpool misfit Mario Balotelli claims he is ready to knuckle down at AC Milan as he bids to fulfil his dying father's wish.

|||

Liverpool misfit Mario Balotelli claims he has left his childish ways behind and is ready to knuckle down at AC Milan as he bids to fulfil his dying father's wish of playing for Italy again.

Balotelli's return to the Rossoneri on a one-season loan deal has been met with derision in Italy, with pundits and most fans opposed to the striker's return to the club he left only a year ago.

Balotelli spectacularly underperformed at Anfield, instead embellishing his reputation as a “liability” – the view of former Reds legend Graeme Souness, among others.

Against his own expectations, the 25-year-old has been given a second chance by Milan. But he knows it could be his last with a top club.

Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic and Milan have instigated a special code of conduct for Balotelli, a player who in the past has riled fans and clubs with his off-field antics, outrageous hairstyles and outings to nightclubs where he has enjoyed the odd cigarette.

Balotelli has pledged to comply – and with good reason. His adoptive father Francesco, whose dying wish was to see Balotelli don the Italy shirt again, died last month. He is also close to his two-year-old daughter Pia, born to ex-girlfriend Raffaella Fico, who is based in Italy.

Like a neo-professional who has just signed his first contract, Balotelli has it all to prove again on and off the field.

But in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport he said: “I feel like a player who's just finished the first half of his career. I played and lived like a kid. It hasn't always gone well, I've wasted a lot of opportunities.

“But the game's not over, I still have a second half to play. Now, I'll play it like a man.”

A poll on the popular 'Processo del Lunedi' sports programme on Monday showed 62 percent of fans opposed his return. Last week, respected pundit and former Milan great Zvonimir Boban called Balotelli's intended move “absurd”.

“I know a lot of people don't believe in my comeback, it's up to me to prove them wrong,” added Balotelli.

“Milan have taken a gamble, but I've made a promise to myself, and all the people who support me... I'm starting from zero and know I can't mess this one up.

“I will follow every rule. I know I'll only be given my chance if I deserve it, but I haven't forgotten how to play football.”

Born to parents of Ghanaian origin, Balotelli was fostered by a white family, the Balotelli's, when he was three years old and eventually adopted.

When he scored the goals for Italy that sent the Azzurri to the final of Euro 2012, Balotelli rushed over to embrace his adoptive mother Silvia as she wept after the win.

But it is his father who is on Balotelli's mind.

“Seeing me back in the Azzurri shirt was one of his dreams before he died. I owe it to him,” said Balotelli.

Milan host Empoli in their first home game of the season this weekend, but fans hoping to see the Balotelli of old -- showing arrogance and reacting to the provocation of fans and rival players -- could be disappointed.

“I will no longer respond to any provocation and will show respect to everyone, from opponents, referees and rival fans,” he said.

Even in the event of racist chanting?

“It's really up to the referees to intervene in these moments, and I will keep my mouth shut. But then in the press conference I will go crazy,” he added.

“You need respect. Fans who racially abuse me when I'm playing against their club are the same ones who shout for me to score when I'm playing for Italy.

“But the day I don't get whistled at is the day I have to start worrying: that's when you're no longer a threat.” – AFP

Everton to reject Stones’ transfer request

Everton manager Roberto Martinez confirmed that defender John Stones had handed in a formal transfer request.

|||

Everton manager Roberto Martinez confirmed that defender John Stones had handed in a formal transfer request and added the club would reject it on Thursday.

Stones, who has four years left on his Everton contract, started during the 5-3 win at Barnsley in the second round of the League Cup on Wednesday, despite formally asking Martínez if he could leave the club.

The 21-year-old is a target for Premier League champions Chelsea, who see him as a long-term replacement for the ageing John Terry.

Chelsea, reportedly, have had three bids for the young England international rejected so far and could make a fourth before the transfer deadline expires on September 1.

Martinez reiterated his stance that Stones would not be sold, saying after the Barnsley game that “... in football as in life, money can't buy everything.”

“We have not rejected it (the transfer request) yet because today was a match day and that was our priority,” the manager said.

“We will reject it in the morning and get on with our business,” he added.

“I am not surprised by the request because he is a young man who is under massive pressure from people and outside influences.

“We want to build a winning team and so we want to keep our best performers. John is a big part of our future,” the 42-year-old Martinez said.

The manager also refused to criticise Stones for a perceived drop in form against Wednesday night's lower league opponents after his impressive showing in the Premier League since the start of the season.

“For a young man under massive pressure he was terrific,” the manager said. “John was just a real example of how to perform under massive, massive pressure and, for me, it was an exceptional display by him.

The Spaniard did, however, repeat his criticism of the transfer window being allowed to stay open past the start of the season, a sore point that has been brought up by several other managers, including West Bromwich Albion's Tony Pulis.

“I am repeating myself but it is wrong for the football authorities to allow the window to remain open when there are important games taking place,” Martinez said.

“When there is an opportunity to go to Wembley and to win silverware that should be respected and we shouldn't put our players under this massive pressure.” – Reuters
