London - With Louis van Gaal planning to use a 4-3-3 formation, seven players who cost £164.5 million will compete for three places in midfield.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Cost: £14million (2015)

Arrived from Bayern Munich having helped his club win the Champions League and starred in Germany’s World Cup win in 2014. At 30, there are doubts about his fitness and he was ruled out of last night’s friendly against Barcelona.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Cost: £24million (2015)

Lauded as one of the reasons Southampton qualified for the Europa League last season. French holding midfield player, Arsenal and Spurs were interested in him.

Michael Carrick

Cost: £18million (2006)

Vice-captain and one of only two survivors from United’s last Champions League win.

He was at one time criticised for not being dynamic enough but Carrick is now regarded as one of the best passing midfield players in the league. As a senior player, Van Gaal will look for him to be a major influence.

Juan Mata

Cost: £38million (2014)

United treated it as a huge coup to get Mata from Chelsea when Jose Mourinho no longer wanted him. The Spaniard struggled under David Moyes but had a renaissance under Van Gaal and reached double figures for goals last season.

Ander Herrera

Cost: £29million (2014)

Moyes wanted the energetic box-to-box Spaniard but he’d been sacked before the player finally arrived. Van Gaal wasn’t inclined to use the 27-year-old and he started only half of United’s Premier League games, scoring seven times.

Marouane Fellaini

Cost: £27.5million (2013)

Became a symbol for the failed Moyes regime as Fellaini was unable to reproduce his Everton form — until Van Gaal started using him as an alternative centre forward.

Daley Blind

Cost: £14million (2014)

The Dutchman can play a number of positions but prefers to sit in front of the back four, although he could also appear on the left of a midfield three. He’s not particularly quick, but Blind is steady and Van Gaal can rely on him.
