Johannesburg – Tiyani Mabunda scored in the dying stages of the second half to hand Premiership strugglers Free State Stars a much needed 1-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic in their derby clash in Phuthaditjhaba on Wednesday.
Both sides had numerous chances, particularly in the second half, but neither was able to capitalise for most of the game.
Second-half substitute Sydney Masana turned it on for the home side shortly after the break, but he fired his header over the crossbar.
Lyle Lakay had an opportunity for the visitors on the hour mark but his attempt was well saved by diving Stars keeper Bruce Mtshali.
Danny Venter was set up to break the deadlock just seconds later on the counter-attack, but he blasted his effort wide to the left.
Mabunda, however, hit the back of the net with five minutes left in the second period, ending a poor run of form for the home side.
Stars had been without a win in their previous five league matches, and their crucial victory lifted them clear of the relegation zone. – Sapa
