Former North Carolina academic adviser Mary Willingham will receive $335,000 in a settlement from her suit against the university.
However, Willingham will not receive her job back, which is what her suit originally requested, along with damages and the recovery of all legal fees. The settlement covers her legal fees and, according to WRAL.com, $40,000 in back pay. The school will also cover mediation costs.
"We appreciate the efforts of the mediator to help us achieve a successful and timely conclusion to the mediation," North Carolina spokesperson Rick White said in a statement. "We believe the settlement is in the best interest of the University and allows us to move forward and fully focus on other important issues."
Willingham's surveys of North Carolina athletes from 2004-2012 that found a significant portion had below-average reading levels. The university disputed her findings in January 2014 and said she misinterpreted her data, rendering her findings "virtually meaningless."
A report released in October detailed the academic fraud that's gone on at North Carolina and said approximately 1,500 athletes have taken bogus classes.
Willingham resigned from her position at the end of the 2014 spring semester. Her research had been barred by the school pending approval from a review board.
"I wanted to show other potential whistleblowers out there that it's possible to survive a fight with a big-money machine," Willingham said in a February statement after it was announced the terms of the settlement had been agreed upon. "I thought it was time to get focused back on the issue of athletes and their educations -- to correct the injustice in the NCAA system. I'm satisfied with the result."
