London - Brendan Rodgers has urged his players to exploit any lingering ‘trepidation’ in Chelsea’s squad and fire Liverpool to Wembley.

Liverpool’s manager is aware of the challenge his side face in the second leg of Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup semi-final but insists, with the score tied at 1-1, they travel to Stamford Bridge without fear.

Having seen Bradford stun Chelsea 4-2 in the FA Cup on Saturday, Rodgers believes the time is right for Liverpool to attack.

He said: “Chelsea will have great motivation as, after a game like that, you want to put it right. But it will be in the back of their minds, even at 2-0 up, that they can lose so there can be trepidation.

“Winning a trophy is a priority for us but you have got to get there first and we will do everything we can to reach Wembley.”

Rodgers, who is certain not to risk Daniel Sturridge in his squad even though the striker has travelled to London, has yet to beat Chelsea in six attempts as Liverpool manager.

He said: “If you look at our record over a number of years it hasn’t been great but that’s irrelevant in this game. We’re coming off the back of a good performance in the first leg. Anyone who saw it will think we could have won comfortably. Our retention of the ball and speed can hurt any opponent.”

Liverpool’s form has been steadily improving and their best recent results have been on the road, which is why Rodgers is not fazed by Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Bolton in the FA Cup or the prospect of having to beat Chelsea on home soil.

“It is a different game at Stamford Bridge but we were a real threat at home,’ said Rodgers, who has also included Mario Balotelli in his travelling party. ‘The team’s confidence is really high.”
