JOHANNESBURG – Platinum Stars coach Allan Freese was pleased with his side’s performance in their 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday night.
Ndumiso Mabena scored the only goal early in the first half and Dikwena held on to register a victory and put more misery on Swallows who are third from the bottom.
“The guys played well and I was pleased with the way we defended against Swallows,” Freese said.
“In the last two matches, we conceded five goals and only scored three. And against Swallows, there was a lot of improvement from the way we played and the way we defended.”
The win saw Dikwena move to 13th on the Absa Premiership log standings, with 14 points from 12 matches.
Freese has been under pressure to deliver after losing the Telkom Knockout final and losing to Polokwane City in a league match.
He admitted that he is relieved after getting the three points which moved them from the bottom.
“I’m hoping that now going forward, we will pick up points and move further away from the danger zone.
“But it is not going to be easy as we will play four matches before Christmas. The win is a motivation for us going forward and hopefully we can pick up more points in the next matches.”
Dikwena will now face log leaders, unbeaten Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, hoping to end Amakhosi’s impressive run this season.
Dikwena are the only team to have defeated Chiefs so far, when they dumped them out from the Telkom Knockout semifinal on penalties.
“Chiefs are coming off a big win in the Soweto derby, but the boys don’t need any motivation when they play big teams,” said Freese.
“It’s going to be tough, but we will approach the game differently and we will plan well for them.”
Dikwena may be without their skipper Vuyo Mere who got injured during the Swallows game and was substituted with the match just 14 minutes old.
“I hope the injury is not too bad, but we will monitor him.”
Swallows’ next match will be away to Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday. – Sapa
