Cape Town – Despite dominating second half proceedings, Ajax Cape Town had to settle for a point after playing out to a 0-0 draw with SuperSport United at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday.
Too many long balls went amiss as the likes of Nathan Paulse for Ajax and SuperSport’s Bradley Grobler were not able to effectively link up with their teammates.
There were no more than half chances from range for the most part, such as Ajax captain Travis Graham’s 37th minute miscued volley.
Paulse also went wide with a half volley on the turn, as well as with a header, while SuperSport defender Clayton Daniels flashed a header wide from David Mathebula’s free kick.
The best chance of the first half came in added time, but Dino Ndlovu was unable to find the accuracy with a thunderbolt of a left-footed shot from 25-yards out.
The Urban Warriors upped the intensity levels after the restart and went close after 47 minutes when SuperSport keeper Ronwen Williams had to react well to tip Bantu Mzwakali’s curling free kick around the post.
A fantastic cross-field ball from Abbubaker Mobara then released Cecil Lolo through on goal, but after making space to shoot, Lolo miscued his parting shot into the side-netting.
At the other end of the park Michael Morton was presented with a good opportunity in the Ajax box, but sent his shot straight at home keeper Anssi Jaakkola.
Ajax continued to pose questions of the Matsatsantsa defence and looked set to take the lead midway through the second half when Mzwakali arrived in the box to get on the end of a free kick, striking the ball powerfully, but straight at Williams.
SuperSport came close to a late winner when Mathebula’s 90th minute powerful drive hit the post before rebounding into Jaakolla, who was fortunate not to see the ball going off him and into the net. – Sapa
