London - Manchester United have suffered yet another injury setback after learning that Luke Shaw could be out for between four and six weeks with ankle ligament damage.
It was initially thought the defender might be sidelined for three weeks with the injury he suffered in the first half of last Saturday’s win at Arsenal. However, scans that had been delayed to allow the swelling on his left ankle to go down yesterday revealed it could be up to twice as long.
The England left back now stands to miss up to eight Premier League games and an FA Cup third-round tie. Despite all the injuries for United manager Louis van Gaal, Darren Fletcher is struggling to get a game and Hull City will lead the chase to sign the midfielder if he decides to leave in January.
The 30-year-old has become an increasingly peripheral figure at Old Trafford since he was appointed vice-captain by Van Gaal in the summer and started the first three games of the season.
He has played less than half an hour of club football as a substitute since August and is out of contract at the end of the season. But he hopes to be offered a one-year extension.
