Johannesburg – After putting on a match winning performance, Wits winger Sameehg Doutie said the team had rectified their past mistakes in the 2-0 Premiership win over Free State Stars.
“We came from an unfortunate loss. We lost in the dying minutes in our last game. We have been pushing hard and we managed to lift ourselves up,” Doutie said.
“I think it was clear to see that we were the better team at the end of the day.”
On the back of Doutie’s superb showing, Wits bounced back with the positive result after going three matches without a win (two losses, and a draw).
Doutie’s assist and goal propelled Wits to a comfortable victory over Stars at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.
With only two minutes on the clock, Doutie provided Chris Kantongo a pinpoint cross which the Zambian duly converted. In the second half Doutie bagged a goal of his own in the 60th minute to roundup the home victory for the university club.
With a tally of 17 points in 11 games, the university club are 12 points adrift of the log leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
The 25 year-old trickster hopes the victory would be a precursor to good results as they look to challenge for league honours.
“We want to get some consistency in the team. All credit goes to the players and the coaching staff. Things were not going well. We lost a couple of games, but now we are motivated to work harder and begin to show what this team is capable of.”
Having taken over from Tom Saintfiet two weeks ago, Stars coach Kinnah Phiri said the players were still getting accustomed to the new tactical approach.
“The players were playing for the first time under my guidance. We made some changes to the team and the system,” Phiri said.
“The players still have to adapt to the system that they are not familiar with. I think the next game we should be alright. We will definitely get better, we made mistakes when we conceded the goals. We will go back to training and we will prepare ourselves properly.”
Wits coach Gavin Hunt handed youngsters Ben Motshwari and Phumlani Ntshangase starting berths in the heart of midfield.
Hunt hailed the duo’s robust and dominant performance in the centre of the park.
“I thought our two young players in midfield were outstanding. I took a gamble to play with the young players. We haven’t won for some time. We have to keep working.
Despite the victory, there was still room for improvements, he said.
“At times we gave the ball away easily. I thought we were excellent in the first-half. There could have been more goals in it for us, but the opposition is not an easy side to play against.” – Sapa
