Durban - Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula put the boot into midfielder May Mahlangu, who cited fatigue as the reason for his withdrawal earlier this week from the Bafana Bafana squad that faces Sudan in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Durban today.

Addressing the media on Friday, after he wished the squad well for this afternoon’s game at Moses Mabhida Stadium, the minister said he would always support the SA Football Association’s decision in such instances.

Mbalula referred to Safa’s decision to ban the player, who wrote from Sweden to say he had played a lot of games and needed rest.

“When it comes to patriotism, we must put our feelings aside and deal with the issue on principle.

“Everybody can be called, and everybody can be dropped by the national coach. To simply abandon the country just like that is really uncalled for.”

Meanwhile, a quiet shopping trip to Gateway mall for Bafana Bafana players turned into an impromptu signing session when hordes of excited fans mobbed the players, asking for autographs.

The players were only too happy to oblige, snapping pictures with the fans and signing soccer gear.

The team took time off on Friday morning after a week-long training session.

The match kicks off at 3pm and will be broadcast live on SABC1 and SS4. Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers stores for R80.

In memory of Durban-born Senzo Meyiwa, there will be a minute’s silence before the match, and players will wear black armbands.
