Johannesburg - It had the tension of a cup final, but the fare dished out was not in keeping with the two teams’ status as giants of the local game.
Chiefs would have been the more pleased of the two with the result, as they extended their unbeaten league run to 11 matches. Sundowns will feel they should have walked away with maximum points, having created the more chances.
Cuthbert Malajila should have sent them 2-0 up two minutes before George Lebese equalised, but the Zimbabwean striker blazed over.
Teko Modise spurned a good chance to complete a brace when he headed over the bar. The midfielder had given the Brazilians the lead with a shot from inside the box nine minutes into the second half.
Malajila’s persistence had seen him toe-poke the ball towards Modise, whose initial touch looked heavy. But he was only setting himself up, and delivered a right-footed shot that beat a flailing Khuzwayo.
It is said that the mark of a champion side is in their ability to lift themselves up when they are down. Chiefs did this against Moroka Swallows last month, when they trailed for the first time this season.
Could they do the same against a Sundowns side enjoying the lion’s share of possession?
The answer was no, when the visitors almost added a second, via Malajila.
But Chiefs always looked dangerous when they turned defence into offensive play.
Reneilwe Letsholonyane carried the ball forward and supplied it to Siphiwe Tshabalala on the right.
The midfielder’s cross found Kingston Nkhatha, who passed the ball to Bernard Parker, the striker being upended by Thabo Nthete to loud appeals for a penalty.
But he’d already released the ball towards Lebese on the far left side to deliver a shot that left Mweene stunned as it trickled in at the far post.
Thereafter both sides tried in vain for the winner that never came.
